Speaker:

Hey everybody.

2

:

Welcome back to Sunday's edition

of the Daily Bible Podcast.

3

:

It's the Lord's Day.

4

:

It is.

5

:

And we hope wherever you are, you either

have been to church or you're on the way

6

:

to church, depending on whether you wanna

go to the nine o'clock or the 11 o'clock.

7

:

'cause we've got two options now for you.

8

:

And the 11 o'clock is surprisingly

lighter than the night.

9

:

Yeah.

10

:

Because at the old church where I

came from, the 11 was the service.

11

:

That's where all the cool kids went, and

it was always like louder music, and the

12

:

worship was always far more charismatic.

13

:

I don't know what happened, but this

one, it seems to be the opposite.

14

:

Our nine o'clock crowd is the more.

15

:

Rowdy.

16

:

Not rowdy, but they're the bigger one.

17

:

They're in full force.

18

:

Yeah.

19

:

Yeah, it is.

20

:

That's true.

21

:

I think it's 'cause we've got a lot of

kids in our church and the kids tell

22

:

mom and dad which service they want.

23

:

No, I'm just kidding.

24

:

I think it's because of nap time

and all those we things, you know.

25

:

So world, a child led

church, it's a new thing.

26

:

We're gonna write a book on it.

27

:

No, but let's talk about church.

28

:

Church starts at nine

and church starts at 11.

29

:

And so, we know that.

30

:

Life gets busy, life gets chaotic

and getting out the door and

31

:

getting kids checked into to

kids ministry and everything else

32

:

like that can be crazy at times.

33

:

But at the same time when we plan our

services and Pastor Rob puts a lot of

34

:

time into the worship component of things

and certainly there's the preaching

35

:

side of things and everything else.

36

:

We're playing in the full service.

37

:

We're playing in the full service from

nine o'clock all the way until it ends.

38

:

And same thing from 11 o'clock

all the way until it ends.

39

:

And we really want you to be

there for the whole thing.

40

:

In fact it's our worship in.

41

:

We as a church are better when we

have everybody there from the very.

42

:

Opening chord that's played from

the first song through to the end.

43

:

It's a better product, even

corporately for us to be together,

44

:

lifting our voices together.

45

:

It's good for us to be there and

it's good for you to be there.

46

:

It's good for you to be

there for the whole thing.

47

:

Church is, and not, I'm not saying

that any of you have this mentality

48

:

necessarily, but church is not just

the sermon church is everything.

49

:

The worship is a vital component

in song just as much as.

50

:

The preaching of the word is a vital

component as well as, our offering

51

:

and our prayer time, everything

else is hugely important there.

52

:

So all that to say if I can give you a

little bit of a nudge just to say, if you

53

:

need to set the alarm a little bit earlier

to get everybody out the door on time.

54

:

If you need to lay the kids' clothes

out the night before to make sure you

55

:

know exactly what they're wearing.

56

:

If you need to prep, breakfast the night

before and do overnight oats or whatever

57

:

it is, just to make Sunday as easy and

frictionless as possible at home to get

58

:

you and your family to church on time.

59

:

Do that.

60

:

It will serve you, it will serve

your family better, and it'll

61

:

serve your brothers in Christ and

sisters in Christ better for you

62

:

to be there for the whole thing.

63

:

We want to see you there.

64

:

We wanna see your smiling faces

and it's an encouragement to our

65

:

worship team too, when they get up

to start the service and they see.

66

:

The room is dense.

67

:

There's people there and they're

ready to engage and they're ready

68

:

to sing along with our team.

69

:

Yeah.

70

:

Sundays are interesting because I think.

71

:

You can almost feel the spiritual

opposition to you getting to church.

72

:

It feels like if things can

go wrong, they do go wrong.

73

:

It feels like there's shorter tempers.

74

:

People are up early and they're not

necessarily in the best attitude.

75

:

There's just so many things that

work against Sunday working the

76

:

way that God is designed, and I

don't think that's an accident.

77

:

I do think there is legitimately

greater spiritual warfare in opposition

78

:

to the average Christian family.

79

:

Who wants to do the right thing?

80

:

I don't doubt for one second that

the spirit is indeed willing.

81

:

Everyone wakes up with the intention.

82

:

Let's get to church,

let's get there on time.

83

:

Let's be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

84

:

But then there's the flesh, and

then there's fallenness in our own

85

:

hearts and the hearts of the others.

86

:

And then there's these,

why is this light red?

87

:

No one's here.

88

:

I could just run the red light

right now and get to church on time.

89

:

What's happening?

90

:

Why is there traffic at.

91

:

4:00 AM on Preston Road because

there's always traffic on Preston Road.

92

:

4:00 AM Well, I guess not

everybody gets through that early.

93

:

There's just always

these things on Sunday.

94

:

Have you guys noticed that on Sundays

or anytime you're trying to go to

95

:

church and do something good, you're

trying to go to community group.

96

:

If it's not at your house,

you're trying to go and do

97

:

something good for God's sake.

98

:

And there's always.

99

:

More obstacles than what it feels

like there should ordinarily be.

100

:

Absolutely.

101

:

I definitely think that's the case.

102

:

I think that Satan doesn't want

us to be there and he's going

103

:

to use all of his everything.

104

:

He has everything in the, in the, all his

resources, all his resources, everything

105

:

he has in the tank, his whole arsenal.

106

:

To keep you from being there, because what

we do on a Sunday morning is so important

107

:

for everything that we do in life.

108

:

And it's going to change how

you go to work the next day.

109

:

It's gonna change how

you do your kids' sports.

110

:

It's gonna change all these things, and

he doesn't want those changes to happen.

111

:

And so, yeah, I think he definitely

is at work in those things.

112

:

And, and we don't perceive

spiritual forces necessarily,

113

:

our hair isn't standing on end

or anything like that, but.

114

:

I do think practically all those

little things get in the way.

115

:

Yeah.

116

:

And to that end, I would suggest try to

get into your seat, not just on time,

117

:

but maybe even a couple minutes early.

118

:

Mm.

119

:

If you are.

120

:

Calculating your morning so that

you have a little bit of a buffer

121

:

to begin with, that will be good.

122

:

'cause then if things do go

sideways, yeah, you'll have a

123

:

little bit of extra time and you

won't necessarily be as stressed.

124

:

But then let's say the Lord

gives you the opportunity to

125

:

be there a few minutes early.

126

:

Take that chance to settle in,

pray, get your, prepare your heart.

127

:

Get ready for what's gonna happen and

use that time well, that time will

128

:

not be wasted if you show up five

minutes early and you have the chance

129

:

to pray for what's about to happen.

130

:

Indeed, you know that, that.

131

:

Could be a great thing for you

to build into your morning.

132

:

One of my pros in college used to

say, Sunday morning starts Saturday

133

:

night, and on that note at Sunset.

134

:

Yeah.

135

:

Being, yeah.

136

:

At Shabbat.

137

:

Yeah.

138

:

No, just being intentional

about the whole thing.

139

:

Getting good rest and just being

ready, being prepared and I would

140

:

say that carries over into, yeah.

141

:

Getting there a little bit early,

looking at, the worksheet, looking

142

:

at the passage, reading through it,

praying through it, asking God to do

143

:

what he wants to accomplish in your

heart and in your life during that time.

144

:

And I would imagine most of the people

listening to this are not the ones

145

:

who are guilty of this all the time.

146

:

And maybe here or there.

147

:

My guess is if you listen to this

podcast consistently, this isn't by

148

:

and large true of everybody here, but

we also wanna build a culture in our

149

:

church where we care about these things.

150

:

Yeah.

151

:

And so even if you are somebody who comes

early and is ready to go, do what you can.

152

:

You don't have to, don't,

you know, don't shame them.

153

:

Yeah.

154

:

Don't shame them.

155

:

Shame them.

156

:

But do what you can to help us build

a church culture where we care about,

157

:

the minute of 9:00 AM to 9 0 1.

158

:

Yeah.

159

:

In our church service.

160

:

That's a good point.

161

:

Otherwise, we're gonna

start doing previews.

162

:

What are those previews like?

163

:

The movie theater, previews,

trailers, this event's coming up and

164

:

we're gonna vary the timing on it.

165

:

So you don't, you can't predict it.

166

:

You're just gonna have to, so let me

offer just one more potential pushback

167

:

that people won't say, but they'll feel.

168

:

Okay.

169

:

And then I want you guys just

to riff on this briefly, 'cause

170

:

we're already a few minutes in.

171

:

I don't like the worship.

172

:

That's gonna, someone's not gonna

say it, but someone is thinking it.

173

:

I guarantee you.

174

:

Yeah, for sure.

175

:

Because I've thought that before.

176

:

Yeah.

177

:

No one's ever thought that except you.

178

:

Sorry, sorry.

179

:

I can't answer a good question.

180

:

I'm just kidding.

181

:

Oh, I was all alone here

on this sinful island.

182

:

No, I would say this.

183

:

Look, no matter where you're at

I don't think across the board

184

:

you're gonna love every song that

you hear when you're in a church.

185

:

The worship team doesn't love

every song that we play, right?

186

:

So I think more importantly,

the challenge is.

187

:

Let me then if this isn't my favorite

song, let me think about the words

188

:

that we're singing, because I can

tell you, I trust Pastor Rod.

189

:

I trust his song selection.

190

:

I know that he puts a

lot of thought into it.

191

:

We're not singing fluff, we're not

singing stuff that is just gonna

192

:

be, the same seven words, 11 times.

193

:

It's a little fluff in there.

194

:

Sometimes it, but it's like the

desserts, but it's theological fluff.

195

:

Yes.

196

:

It's not plum.

197

:

It's not just yeah, sure.

198

:

It's not nonsense.

199

:

So look for the theological nugget,

even during the song that isn't

200

:

your favorite, and meditate on that.

201

:

If that means you're not singing in,

in, in that moment, as long as you're

202

:

not sitting there with your arms

crossed with a furrow brow, okay, fine.

203

:

But if you can contemplate that

theological nugget, maybe you're

204

:

gonna pick up your Bible, you're gonna

turn to a passage that reminds you of

205

:

that truth, that might be a good way

to still stay engaged even during a

206

:

song that might not be your favorite.

207

:

I agree with that.

208

:

The, my other suggestion might be, look

around at other people who are singing.

209

:

Look at the rest of God's

people who are singing.

210

:

Like Stare at them.

211

:

Yeah, stare at them.

212

:

Okay.

213

:

Stare at them down.

214

:

Full on stare.

215

:

Oh, no.

216

:

No blinking either.

217

:

You know what I mean?

218

:

You know what I mean?

219

:

I'm saying enjoy God's.

220

:

Church worshiping, even if you

don't enjoy the individual song.

221

:

Yeah.

222

:

Enjoy God's church and his

people together worshiping him.

223

:

Pull out your phone and video them as

they're saying while you're staring and

224

:

blinking, walking them down the aisles

and just like it was unblinkingly.

225

:

Well, we could use a media team.

226

:

Someone told me and it stuck.

227

:

'cause it hit and it hurt.

228

:

But worship's not about you.

229

:

Like what, so you don't like the song?

230

:

So the worship is not about you.

231

:

It's about what the, it's for the Lord.

232

:

And it's also an

encouragement to your people.

233

:

So sing and participate because

that's what God wants you to do.

234

:

And I'm like, you know what?

235

:

I guess that kind of does clarify for me.

236

:

I may not be my favorite song,

but okay, I'm here to do it.

237

:

The Lord wants me to, I'm

gonna do it with a smile.

238

:

So help me God, to quote

a great pastor theologian.

239

:

Oof.

240

:

Oof.

241

:

Yeah.

242

:

That one hurts.

243

:

Which I say that often.

244

:

Come on church.

245

:

Come on.

246

:

Come on church.

247

:

Oof.

248

:

Alright.

249

:

Hey, let's jump into our

daily Bible reading for today.

250

:

We're in first Samuel 27 through 29,

and so if you on Sunday, see Pastor Mark

251

:

with his phone out and he's just walking

by you recording you unthinkingly,

252

:

just know he doesn't like the song and

he's a little awkward and it's okay.

253

:

Why are you trying to sync my point?

254

:

First Samuel 27 through 29

at Luke 17, one through 19.

255

:

Alright, first Samuel 27.

256

:

David goes to the Philistines and

I'm still conflicted over this move.

257

:

On the one hand I understand it,

there's not a lot of places that

258

:

he can go with his men and be.

259

:

Safe.

260

:

He's having, I'm not conflicted.

261

:

He's having him to move.

262

:

You think it's a bad move?

263

:

I think it's a bad move.

264

:

Okay.

265

:

Wow.

266

:

I tend to agree with you, but

here's my pushback on that.

267

:

Number one there, there's, he's

got 400 mighty men With him there's

268

:

not a lot of place for 400 mighty

men , to hang out unnoticed.

269

:

And he is running.

270

:

If he stops running,

Saul's gonna kill him.

271

:

Number two.

272

:

While they're with the Philistines,

he is sabotaging God's enemies.

273

:

He's working against them.

274

:

So he's going out and raiding

the enemies of Israel still while

275

:

under the guise of the Philistines.

276

:

Even when the Philistines, and we're

gonna get there in two chapters decide

277

:

that they're gonna go to battle.

278

:

And David's David wants to go, I think,

fully that David is going to turn against

279

:

the Philistines during that battle.

280

:

I don't think he's gonna lift

a sword against the Israelites.

281

:

He had every opportunity

to kill Saul twice.

282

:

And he never did.

283

:

I don't think he's all of a sudden gonna

be okay killing the armies of God either.

284

:

So that's the only reason why I say

I'm conflicted by this move to the

285

:

Philistines, is because David is shrewd

while he's there, to still be serving the

286

:

Lord, even though he's in enemy territory.

287

:

Yeah, that is absolutely

reasonable, and I think you're right.

288

:

I think the, yeah, and again, I'm not

totally settled on this, but I would say

289

:

it's not a good move because it's not a

good move when the people of Israel leave.

290

:

The promised land, when they leave

God's specific territory that he

291

:

has granted to them, that never

works out well in other situations.

292

:

And at best, the situation ends up

being a neutral situation, right?

293

:

There's not great favor that is bestowed

on David for these particular actions.

294

:

So yeah, that's just my 2 cents.

295

:

I think David acknowledges

that this is a bad move.

296

:

Even though the psalm that's

written in response to it is largely

297

:

positive, he acknowledges, and thanks

God for his favor and his grace.

298

:

And this is the downside of reading

this plan, because we're not gonna

299

:

get to the Psalms until right.

300

:

A couple months, I think.

301

:

But Psalm 56 is the one.

302

:

And Psalm 34 that talk about this

particular season, and I think

303

:

they're largely positive Psalms and

he ascribes credit to God for it.

304

:

So I think if I'm putting my feet into

the sandals of David I think he knows

305

:

this isn't a good move, but this is

a move of desperation as you see in

306

:

verse one here, he says, now I shall

perish one day by the hand of Saul.

307

:

There's nothing better for me than that.

308

:

I should escape to the

land of the Philistines.

309

:

So he's desperate and obviously.

310

:

Not thinking, well, at least

that's the way I understand that.

311

:

He's not thinking clearly.

312

:

He's not thinking by faith,

he's thinking by fear.

313

:

Yeah.

314

:

Yeah.

315

:

Which is what provokes his decision.

316

:

Yeah, I would agree.

317

:

Well, chapter 28, there's

a little interlude here.

318

:

As the Philistines are

preparing for battle against the

319

:

Israelites, Saul is panicking.

320

:

He doesn't have Samuel anymore,

and God is not answering him.

321

:

He's seeking the Lord.

322

:

And the Lord has left him.

323

:

The Lord has abandoned him.

324

:

The Lord is not providing guidance

and counsel to him anymore.

325

:

So Saul decides to pursue other

means and he thinks, well, Samuel

326

:

always gave me good advice.

327

:

Lemme see if I can get to Samuel and he.

328

:

He then proceeds to go

to a medium or a witch.

329

:

And he had banished them from the

kingdom and even ordered them to be

330

:

executed if they were still there.

331

:

So, he has to disguise himself.

332

:

He goes there and he asks this

woman to bring up Samuel for him.

333

:

Now, a again, another situation

where I go back and forth, is this

334

:

Samuel or is this a demonic spirit

under the guise of Samuel is.

335

:

There is a situation where God

would dispatch Samuel from his

336

:

presence after Samuel's dead to go

back in, in a spirit being form.

337

:

'cause I don't know that we see this.

338

:

Elijah and Moses on the Mount of

Transfiguration, they're with Jesus.

339

:

They're there and they're not

said to be spiritual forms

340

:

there or spirit beings there.

341

:

This is just an interesting and the

witch is shocked, which I think tells

342

:

me that this is the first time this

has legitimately worked for her.

343

:

She is.

344

:

Absolutely flabbergasted sees

that it's Saul, but I'd love to

345

:

get y'all's thoughts on is this

Samuel or is this an evil spirit?

346

:

I do think it's Samuel.

347

:

I can't say that with absolute certainty,

but I do think it's Samuel and part

348

:

of that is because he prophesies of.

349

:

The coming death.

350

:

That's true of Saul and his and his sons.

351

:

And that does indeed come to be.

352

:

Could a demonic force have Yes.

353

:

That that was gonna happen?

354

:

Perhaps.

355

:

But I do think, the test of the prophet

is, are the prophecies they make true.

356

:

And it is true.

357

:

And it could have been just a coincidence.

358

:

But I'm gonna be inclined to see this,

given the way it's structured narratively

359

:

to say that this is indeed Samuel.

360

:

I would agree with that.

361

:

I don't see anything in the text

that would lead me to doubt that

362

:

all the signs appear to be positive.

363

:

That is, they affirm.

364

:

What the narrator's narrating that this is

the prophet Samuel, he doesn't say us the

365

:

spirit of, or a spirit that appeared to

be pro to be Samuel, something like that.

366

:

It is who he says he is, at

least as far as we can tell.

367

:

And I, for many reasons, this is

exceptional and I would be I don't

368

:

think God does this as a rule.

369

:

I don't think He says, I'm gonna

let you have access to one of my

370

:

servants and I'm gonna let it.

371

:

Let him or her be summoned by some

kind of witch or medium or satanist

372

:

who proffers, these kinds of things.

373

:

I think this is an

exceptional circumstance.

374

:

Now, as far as the medium, the witch at

Endor she could have been shocked because

375

:

of who it was, and I've heard that before.

376

:

It's like, oh, this is the Sam.

377

:

What are you doing?

378

:

Who are, you must be solvent.

379

:

And, oh, oh my, I'm in trouble.

380

:

I'm gonna die.

381

:

And she had every reason to think that,

because that was the death penalty.

382

:

In fact, what was warranted.

383

:

So.

384

:

I don't know.

385

:

I do know that the

spiritual realm is real.

386

:

I do know that they're really

good at imitating because they've

387

:

had a long time to observe us.

388

:

Whether or not God allows human spirits

to interact with or yeah, deceased human

389

:

spirits to interact with us after death.

390

:

I don't think that's.

391

:

That's what you can take

from this with anything.

392

:

I think this is exceptional.

393

:

God uses, and God does not ever, ever

even give anything close to saying,

394

:

Hey, you should try this someday.

395

:

Yeah, I think that's a good

point to, to notice, right?

396

:

This is not something that a

Christian should apply in their

397

:

own life in any way ever, or pursue

even to the slightest degree, right?

398

:

This is carried out by a witch.

399

:

Right by somebody who is a, to whatever

degree, somebody who deals with evil

400

:

spirits in the evil spiritual realm.

401

:

And this is incredibly dangerous.

402

:

And also notice what happens to

Saul because he pursued this right?

403

:

The next thing that happens to

him is he dies death penalty.

404

:

And so this is judgment from the Lord.

405

:

This is judgment for

the Lord for his life.

406

:

But also I think.

407

:

Because of what he specifically does here.

408

:

Can I ask you a personal question?

409

:

No.

410

:

Collective view.

411

:

No, I'm just kidding.

412

:

Well, okay, fine.

413

:

I take it back.

414

:

Have you ever had anybody tell you that

they or a family member encountered a

415

:

recently deci deceased family member?

416

:

Spiritually.

417

:

Yes.

418

:

Yes.

419

:

You've had that.

420

:

Yes, actually several times.

421

:

Multiple times for me too.

422

:

Yeah.

423

:

And I guess I'm assuming that there's at

least a couple people who are listening

424

:

who have had something similar take place.

425

:

Yeah.

426

:

Either they, themselves have,

I saw her, she was there.

427

:

It looked like my grandma.

428

:

It was the same shape, or, my grandpa,

there was something that happened there.

429

:

He moved the vase.

430

:

That was his, weird stuff like

that takes place in people's homes.

431

:

And it's intimate family members,

it's usually not like in the

432

:

middle of a public square.

433

:

It's in the privacy of their home.

434

:

If that were to happen to a Christian,

someone that, you know in the

435

:

church, someone dies and there's

some kind of spiritual activity

436

:

that they perceive, what would you

encourage them to do with that?

437

:

It reminds me of, in some ways

the regimen and Lazarus again,

438

:

because I think our testimony is.

439

:

We have everything necessary for life and

godliness in, in the pages of scripture.

440

:

And so as far as what we need for our

faith and our trust and our confidence

441

:

and where they are and what's going

on we have that revealed to us

442

:

already in the pages of the scripture.

443

:

I don't think we need more than that.

444

:

And so I'd be cautious to say

that this is God giving us

445

:

additional information, revelation.

446

:

Anything else like that?

447

:

I'll see the.

448

:

Airwaves to you guys.

449

:

My default would be skepticism.

450

:

Even if it were to happen to me, I

think my default would be skepticism,

451

:

but that shouldn't come as a surprise.

452

:

'cause I'm also the guy that

doesn't believe in aliens.

453

:

So, I'll open the airwaves to you guys.

454

:

I think typically and I think,

there's, we're generalizing here.

455

:

I would wanna know more about

the individual situation.

456

:

But I'm gonna, because we're

generalizing, I'm gonna give a

457

:

generalized answer, at least that's

fair to the best of my ability.

458

:

I think those things are often

the person's natural grief.

459

:

In at work, right?

460

:

You when you lose somebody, you like

hear their voice sometimes, right?

461

:

Yeah.

462

:

Or you.

463

:

Or you, oh, they're

there, or, where are they?

464

:

Right?

465

:

You have those sort of impulses or

those sort of things when there's,

466

:

especially when they're so built

into your daily life, right?

467

:

If it's a spouse who

you've spent 50 years with.

468

:

It's quite a shock the day they're gone.

469

:

Right?

470

:

And your brain, even the way your brain

is programmed, expects to see them

471

:

there, expects to hear their voice.

472

:

Yeah.

473

:

Expects this to happen or that to happen.

474

:

And so I think generally this

is the process of grief at work.

475

:

And again, I would wanna know more about

the specific situation to be able to.

476

:

Answer that in specific settings,

but that would be my general

477

:

explanation or way I would see this.

478

:

I appreciate that and I think

I would offer a caution as

479

:

heartfelt as I can offer it.

480

:

And I agree because when you lose

somebody that you love, that, that's

481

:

a gut punch and it leaves a void

in a chasm in your soul mm-hmm.

482

:

That just never gets filled.

483

:

That person is never going to be.

484

:

In the room with you again, and

that kind of emptiness and sadness

485

:

can play tricks on the mind.

486

:

I would agree with that.

487

:

But the testimony that I've gotten

from people is I was so comforted.

488

:

It meant so much to me that

I could see her or see him.

489

:

I heard his voice or something like

that, and I, that concerns me for your

490

:

sake, because God doesn't want you to

find comfort in your lost loved one.

491

:

He wants you to find comfort in him.

492

:

He wants you to go to him as the source

of your and endurance and encouragement

493

:

and your ability to trust what he's doing.

494

:

Now, is it possible that God

could give you some kind of sign?

495

:

It's possible, but that

possibility is such a speculative.

496

:

Unsure.

497

:

You just can't ground it in anything.

498

:

Your best bet, if that ever were to

happen to you or someone says that

499

:

to you and say, I would use it as

an opportunity to pray and just say,

500

:

Lord I'm hurting, I'm struggling.

501

:

Will you please, will you comfort me?

502

:

I don't wanna be comforted by

food or by visions, or by, I'm

503

:

gonna watch friends for the next

72 hours because I'm just so sad.

504

:

Just face it with the Lord.

505

:

Take comfort in him.

506

:

Yeah I'm good with both those responses.

507

:

I think that's helpful.

508

:

Yeah.

509

:

Last chapter we touched on it already, but

the Philistines are getting ready to go

510

:

to battle and the king of the Philistine

armies is ready to send David with them.

511

:

His lords come back and say,

Nope, we're not doing this.

512

:

We know who this guy is.

513

:

SA has killed his thousands.

514

:

David is 10 thousands.

515

:

So the king calls David and

says, Hey, you need to go back.

516

:

And I think this is God preventing

David's loss of life even at the

517

:

hand of the Philistines, as much as

at the hand of the Israelites, just

518

:

because of what I was saying earlier.

519

:

I think David was gonna

turn on the Philistines.

520

:

It's speculation, but

that's my take on it.

521

:

So, God prevents David from having

at least to go and fight his, the,

522

:

his brothers, that he's going to

shortly lead here as their king.

523

:

So this is a mercy of

God by sending him back.

524

:

Luke 17, one through 19 in the

New Testament reading today.

525

:

I find it interesting after his

address to, in the first four verses

526

:

about temp tempting people to sin and

what happens to those that especially

527

:

cause the little ones to sin.

528

:

And then he says talks about forgiveness.

529

:

That the initial response of the

apostles is, Lord, increase our faith.

530

:

Increase our faith.

531

:

This is, it reminds me a little bit of,

in John's gospel when Jesus is talking

532

:

to his disciples and so many people leave

and Jesus looks at them and they say,

533

:

he says, do you guys wanna leave too?

534

:

It's, some of Jesus's

teachings are hard hearing.

535

:

The teaching.

536

:

You have to forgive when

somebody sins against you.

537

:

That's not something we want to hear.

538

:

These are hard things to process and I

think that's part of the reason why the

539

:

apostles say, Hey, increase our faith.

540

:

And Jesus is saying, look, you just

need faith like a mustard seed.

541

:

You just need even a small amount of

faith, which is an encouragement to us.

542

:

If you struggle, and even today I'm

preaching a little bit on anxiety.

543

:

Anxiety and the relationship with

humility and pride and things like

544

:

that, maybe you're a fearful person,

a person who struggles with anxiety,

545

:

a person who struggles to do what

God calls them to do all the time.

546

:

It's an encouragement that Jesus

is, you need a micron of faith.

547

:

A small amount of faith

is what's necessary.

548

:

And then over time, yes.

549

:

Does that faith grow?

550

:

Yeah, because that mustard seed

grows and becomes the biggest

551

:

tree in the, in all of the forest.

552

:

And that small faith

that we have will grow.

553

:

God's gonna be faithful to that,

and I think Jesus is alluding

554

:

to that here in this chapter.

555

:

There's two things that really stand out

to me in this brief section of Luke 17.

556

:

Which is where we are.

557

:

Yes.

558

:

Okay.

559

:

Just checking.

560

:

Took me a second to catch up here.

561

:

Okay.

562

:

Yes.

563

:

Two major things that stand out to me.

564

:

Number one, the unworthy servants.

565

:

I love this because I think this

is a really helpful framing of the

566

:

work that we do on behalf of Christ.

567

:

Some of us are great servants.

568

:

We serve sacrificially, we serve lovingly,

we do, we just go above and beyond.

569

:

We apply the Adi pat mentality,

anything, any place, anytime.

570

:

And here Jesus says.

571

:

How you're to think about yourself.

572

:

Verse nine does the master thank the

servant because he did what was commanded.

573

:

He says, so you also, when you have

done all that, you were commanded,

574

:

say, we are unworthy servants.

575

:

We have only done what was our duty,

what an entire reframing of the

576

:

way that I look at my service Now.

577

:

It doesn't mean that God is just a

cruel task master who doesn't care

578

:

about your hurts and your sacrifices.

579

:

Clearly he does.

580

:

He's going to reward you.

581

:

He will bless you.

582

:

But before he gets to that point

here in Luke 17, he tells us like

583

:

this is how you're think about

yourself, just an unworthy servant.

584

:

And I'm doing what I'm called to do.

585

:

I'm not acting exceptionally, I'm

not become, I'm not extraordinary

586

:

in an ultimate grand scheme.

587

:

God sees us as this is

the right thing to do.

588

:

I should see myself in this way.

589

:

So let me encourage you to think of

yourself in these terms that Jesus says

590

:

and often we don't do this, but we should.

591

:

This is a really hard thing,

but a good thing for us.

592

:

This helps reframe all of our

service, reframe what we do in

593

:

terms of this is the right thing.

594

:

And I can't take any credit for that.

595

:

The Lord has done this through me.

596

:

Secondly.

597

:

I wanna point out to you in the Jesus

cleansing the 10 lepers, his final few

598

:

verses here, verses 11 through 18, 19

the one thing that always stands out to

599

:

me that I find so helpful for my soul

is that Jesus expects my Thanksgiving.

600

:

He doesn't look at the one who came

back and says, Hey, you did it.

601

:

Good job.

602

:

Well done.

603

:

I appreciate your gratitude.

604

:

What a good thing for you to do.

605

:

He says, where are the nine?

606

:

Where are the others?

607

:

He expects our gratitude.

608

:

He deserves it.

609

:

And both of these put Jesus in a very a

stranger light than what we're used to.

610

:

But I think it's a helpful one.

611

:

It fills out the whole picture.

612

:

Jesus is gentle, lowly, and mild.

613

:

Yes, but he's also the king.

614

:

He deserves our respect.

615

:

He deserves our trust.

616

:

He deserves our duty, our heartfelt

joy filled duty, and our gratitude.

617

:

This is the Lord.

618

:

This is the king.

619

:

He deserves these things.

620

:

That's a great point.

621

:

And it positions us right.

622

:

We need to understand our

position rightly in order to be

623

:

faithful in all the things we do.

624

:

If we misunderstand our position

before God, that's a big, that's

625

:

gonna cause a lot of problems.

626

:

It's gonna be a big problem.

627

:

Totally.

628

:

Well, let's pray and they'll be done with

this episode, the Daily Bible Podcast.

629

:

Lord, give us such a humble mind, mindset

and mentality, even as we're talking

630

:

about in our church service today.

631

:

We wanna be those that serve.

632

:

And recognize that this is

what we're called to do.

633

:

This is who we are meant to be, that

Jesus is the Lord of our life completely.

634

:

And so God, we want to

be a church that is.

635

:

Geared that way.

636

:

And also a church that's grateful

and thankful for our salvation.

637

:

That is always finding opportunity to give

thanks to you no matter what we're facing.

638

:

If for nothing else other than eternal

life, salvation, forgiveness, mercy,

639

:

grace that we see at the cross, Lord,

there's always reasons for us to be

640

:

those that are the one gr grateful leper.

641

:

Help us to be a church like that.

642

:

We want to be.

643

:

Careful to be grateful for what

you have done in our lives.

644

:

And there's so many other things beyond

salvation that you've done for us, Lord,

645

:

that we should always be thankful for.

646

:

So help us to be grateful people

we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
