We all want to be the best teacher we can possibly need. But meeting every student's unique needs can take a toll on us and lead to burnout, especially if our students who are struggling start to act out.
In this episode, Alyson Young is joining me to chat about the challenges students with ADHD and Dyslexia face in traditional classroom settings and how teachers can best support these students. She also shares insights into the misconceptions surrounding ADHD and Dyslexia, how to identify struggling students, ways to support both younger and older students. She also dives into the importance of building relationships with students and how teachers can better equip themselves to help their students with ADHD or Dyslexia.
Alyson Young is the founder of The Learning Lab. She has a rich education, psychology, and sociology background, and has taught in public, private, and charter schools. Through her diverse experience, she's witnessed many intelligent children struggle due to inappropriate instruction, leading to frustration, anxiety, and sometimes behavioral problems. This realization sparked her passion to explore the Science of Reading, an area that was often neglected in traditional education systems. Alyson understood that these children weren't struggling because they weren't smart or trying hard enough, but because the educational approach just wasn't aligned with their unique learning styles. Determined to change this, she set out to create The Learning Lab, a place where children's learning styles were acknowledged and embraced. Known for being a mover and a shaker, her primary mission is to uncover how each child learns best and then devise a tailored plan to help them experience success.
