Shownotes

Kenny Rogers' song, "The Gambler," included these lines:

"You gotta' know when to hold 'em; know when to fold 'em. Know when to walk away. Know when to run."

You may be wondering what that has to do with John 10, but hold on. It's relevant!

Jesus demonstrates the necessity of discernment in dealing with people. He shows sometimes you stay and respond to people's questions (and accusations). Sometimes you remove yourself entirely from a situation.

Sometimes we better serve the work of God when we leave the places of power and prestige and go to the humbler places -- and people.

We also see:

  1. The necessity of knowing the Scriptures from memory. The Holy Spirit can't bring back to our remembrance what we never knew to begin with. If the Very God of Very God relied on Scripture in dealing with thorny (toxic?) people, how much more do we?!
  2. We're not obligated to answer any question put to us.
  3. People of integrity welcome transparency. People with something to hide will have misaligned words and actions -- even if they're buried deep.
  4. The origin of Hanukkah or "The Festival of Lights."
