In this episode of Visibility Strategies for Women Entrepreneurs, Tori Barker sits down with business and wellness coach, author, and TEDx speaker Dr. Christiane Schroeter to explore how women can redefine success and build visibility without burnout.
Christiane shares her journey from academic research to global stages — and the lessons she’s learned about how small, intentional actions can lead to massive breakthroughs in confidence, clarity, and sustainable success.
If you’ve ever felt the pressure to “do it all” or struggled to balance visibility with wellness, this conversation will remind you that success isn’t about being everywhere, it’s about being authentic, aligned, and giving yourself grace along the way.

27
:how are you today
28
:I'm so excited to be here Tori
29
:and can't wait to share some of my inside secrets and
30
:of course some tips on how to get you more visibility
31
:awesome I can't wait
32
:I love I love when we
33
:you know
34
:are in the groom green room and we're already talking
35
:about the fun conversation to come
36
:so let's jump in and let's talk about your journey
37
:and I know that you have built such a powerful brand
38
:around helping entrepreneurs thrive without burnout
39
:so what first inspired you and your journey
40
:to combine that business success with wellness
41
:let's start there
42
:yeah so as I was doing my PhD
43
:the best time to burn out is probably when you
44
:when you study at a top tier university
45
:to get a PhD in a foreign country
46
:not knowing exactly what you're going to do afterwards
47
:it's like I have to finish
48
:I don't really know what I'm going to do
49
:but at the same time I know that what I'm doing
50
:I really love and so when I
51
:when I did my PhD I was just in it
52
:doing the research on obesity how we
53
:and use small changes to improve food intake
54
:well being and of course tie that back to economics
55
:such as price and income changes
56
:so my whole life
57
:I've always looked at small changes and small changes
58
:meaning that we don't need to do these radical diets
59
:or overhauls and wellness
60
:to improve our our well being
61
:it could just be small incremental changes
62
:and that was really something that
63
:when I really look back now
64
:started my whole journey of what I now have
65
:petit practice um
66
:is my trademark small changes leading to big impact
67
:so doing my PhD I had to take care of myself to finish
68
:then starting my job and then of course
69
:as I moved across the country to California
70
:where I live right now
71
:I started my job here being pregnant
72
:so what better time to start a job when you're pregnant
73
:hahaha
74
:right
75
:and to take care of yourself was even more important
76
:because it was just me
77
:it was my daughter at that point then too
78
:with me starting my job
79
:and I think that my life overall is a fantastic journey
80
:of we sometimes wish for things
81
:and when they do happen they don't happen necessarily
82
:at the time when you think it would be perfect
83
:but you just have to think
84
:this is perfect right now
85
:this is perfect right now because it's happening
86
:and so I'm just grateful that it's happening
87
:and I think that is another reminder
88
:to take care of yourself because
89
:you don't know when your dreams will become true
90
:mm hmm you know
91
:I love I love the focus on wellness
92
:because
93
:there's such a correlation between personal wellness
94
:and business wellness and I
95
:I was having a conversation with someone
96
:a couple weeks ago
97
:and she was talking about a study that she had done
98
:about that correlation and how
99
:like the wellness of the business owner
100
:truly impacts the wellness and success of the
101
:the business itself
102
:and so why not focus on that importance
103
:because you know
104
:it's gonna be a full circle turn around
105
:not only for yourself but also for
106
:for your business your company
107
:whatever it might be
108
:so yeah
109
:it's just amazing to to think about just that
110
:like you said small
111
:tiny mindset shift or practice shift
112
:or whatever it might be
113
:is gonna make such a big difference
114
:yeah I always
115
:because I'm a full time professor
116
:at the university in California
117
:I always tell my students
118
:you introduce yourself first
119
:and then I will share a little bit about myself
120
:because I'm a firm believer
121
:I want them to know
122
:people don't really care about how much you know
123
:I'm not going to tell them
124
:impress them with my knowledge
125
:so people don't care about how much you know
126
:until they know about how much you care
127
:and I care about them I want them to feel welcome
128
:I want them to feel included
129
:and being part of a community
130
:and I honestly share with them
131
:what I do to take care of myself
132
:or what I do that I kind of messed up
133
:and I'm very transparent and authentic about it
134
:and I think that makes you a better leader
135
:because I I care what what
136
:what my personal journey is like
137
:the UPS and downs and the little wins along the way
138
:and I celebrate those with them
139
:and I think
140
:that's really what makes my business so successful
141
:that I look at every small step as something that
142
:it can be amazing
143
:or it could be what I call a first attempt in learning
144
:right a fail
145
:and that is just something that
146
:sometimes it's just expensive education
147
:where you maybe failed with something
148
:and it's like alright
149
:well that didn't work
150
:yeah it's OK you
151
:just have to keep going
152
:and you have to keep sharing those moments too
153
:because that's really
154
:how you're actually building your business
155
:that you're making yourself a better leader
156
:by being more vulnerable yeah
157
:and I think uh
158
:along the lines of being a better leader
159
:and being vulnerable comes with also being aligned
160
:and feeling aligned with what you're doing
161
:and so
162
:I know that many women entrepreneurs specifically
163
:struggle with being visible
164
:without that burnout and how
165
:how how do you help those women embrace the visibility
166
:in a way that makes them feel aligned
167
:and a sustainable way to continue moving forward
168
:I think one of the Miss Con
169
:misperceptions about visibility really
170
:is that you have to be everywhere all the time
171
:and you have to look a certain way
172
:and your your visibility really only shines through
173
:if you first figure out what makes you unique
174
:so the what
175
:and then
176
:how you can share that
177
:and that doesn't mean that you have to be
178
:necessarily on a stage
179
:if you don't like public speaking
180
:then don't do that it could be a podcast right
181
:or it could be you're writing a book
182
:and it could even be a journey
183
:you might start with a book
184
:and become more comfortable in sharing that on podcast
185
:and then
186
:become more comfortable in getting on the stage
187
:but I think that sometimes
188
:the burnout comes from the fact that you think
189
:oh now I write a book
190
:and I have to do all these things yeah
191
:actually when I prepared for my Ted talk
192
:the best advice that I really gave myself
193
:was that
194
:there could be a day when my practice was amazing
195
:and I thought I had it all memorized
196
:and then the next day I presented
197
:and it was really not great
198
:the best advice I gave myself is
199
:you just have to give yourself Grace
200
:right and
201
:and that is something that
202
:with visibility is so true
203
:because you're putting yourself out there
204
:you're becoming
205
:more comfortable with being uncomfortable
206
:because it's this new territory
207
:this new country of visibility
208
:and everybody looks at you and I think that is real
209
:really what
210
:like sometimes needs to burn out that you think oh
211
:it's just like
212
:the perfect journey and everything will be great
213
:it's it's actually really just not no
214
:yeah you know
215
:two points I'm thinking about as we're
216
:as I'm listening to you is
217
:is what I always talk about with visibility
218
:is it starts internally right
219
:you have to be okay with being visible
220
:and you have to understand your why
221
:and why you want to be visible
222
:and then once you understand and feel comfortable
223
:and get clarity and that confidence
224
:inside you then
225
:that's when you can tackle that external visibility
226
:and then it's also you know
227
:um finding ways to put yourself out there
228
:that are going to make a big impact
229
:while also be aligned with what you wanna do
230
:and so it's just like you think about all these things
231
:right external
232
:internal uh
233
:highlight highlight reels right
234
:like you look at other people and their visibility
235
:and you think oh
236
:my gosh they've got it all together
237
:but behind the scenes they may be falling apart or
238
:or they it's taken them 10 years to get the
239
:to this point
240
:and so you can't measure yourself up against somebody
241
:somebody's now where you are
242
:you know you have to meet yourself
243
:where you're at and like you said
244
:have Grace give yourself Grace
245
:because you you will get there
246
:it's just you're on your own time
247
:yeah and then at the end of the day
248
:I love that you brought up the why so even
249
:let's say you are speaking on a stage right
250
:so I just spoke to on the
251
:on the Ted stage right
252
:to an audience a live audience
253
:you always have to think the reason why you are there
254
:is to share something that's really vulnerable to you
255
:yeah and you have to be okay with that
256
:yeah I knew from the get go that I might cry on stage
257
:which actually didn't
258
:but I thought there's a chance I might
259
:because it's very personal to me
260
:so the message really has to be your mess
261
:and you have to be clear with the fact that
262
:the reason why you're becoming more visible
263
:is to help others period
264
:that's it it's
265
:it's not necessarily oh
266
:I want to do this to make money
267
:that's that's just the outcome
268
:if you're doing a great job
269
:you will make money with it
270
:but the main message is
271
:that you look at the people in the audience
272
:and you are there to serve them
273
:to share something that will help them
274
:because it helped you and so you're becoming the
275
:the megaphone of your message by being on these stages
276
:and I think that sometimes it's disregarded
277
:it's like oh
278
:I should talk about that because I know a lot about it
279
:well
280
:but I mean
281
:why do we care right
282
:and and so it's like huh
283
:yeah I could talk a lot about different things
284
:because I know a lot about it
285
:but really what makes people listen is when you
286
:when you share like
287
:a moment that was really the aha moment for you
288
:because in the way that you will talk about
289
:it will be the aha moment for the others
290
:because you're gonna be way more passionate
291
:than just describing the marketing mix
292
:or how to run a podcast it's like OK
293
:get that you know
294
:yeah when you lead with your heart
295
:the impact is so much greater
296
:true yeah
297
:so so let's
298
:so you talked about a little bit about the
299
:the Ted X talk like
300
:what inspired you to do that
301
:because I know a lot of times
302
:I mean that seems to be a Pinnacle of visibility
303
:and a opportunity for huge visibility
304
:was that something that was on your kind of roadmap
305
:or did it fall into your lap
306
:tell us a little bit about how that came to be
307
:yeah actually
308
:I've just researched this yesterday
309
:so it just happened a couple of days ago
310
:I gave my talk right
311
:and yesterday I sat down
312
:because I want to write a book now
313
:the runway to the red dot
314
:and when you give a Ted talk
315
:you stand on this rug that's red
316
:and people call it the red dot
317
:just like FYI
318
:if you're like what is she talking about
319
:that's basically it right and
320
:I always wanted to do that
321
:but for some reason
322
:I was actually afraid to verbalize that
323
:so for me
324
:it was kind of funny because I felt that I was
325
:I had it in my in the back of my mind
326
:but I nearly felt like once I share that
327
:that people are going to be like yeah right
328
:because the chances of being accepted are so slim
329
:and then of course
330
:people like you already have your job
331
:why you wanna do this I mean
332
:you are already a professor
333
:so what's the deal right
334
:and I think that frequently when we have dreams
335
:you have to tell others about it
336
:because otherwise it will not ever become something
337
:that will become part of your journey
338
:because by sharing it by saying it out loud
339
:you are actually making it real
340
:and it forces you to make it real
341
:because you're using words to describe it
342
:I think for me it was always there
343
:that I wanted to be on a stage
344
:and wanted to be a keynote speaker
345
:and what better stage than Ted
346
:but I just didn't really verbalize it
347
:and I have to say
348
:I probably started thinking more about it
349
:during the pandemic
350
:just because I was doing more video creation
351
:I realized I guess I could be a one to many speakers
352
:because the video could be shared
353
:and then when I went back to the classroom
354
:I was back with my normal group of 40 to 50 students
355
:at the university I thought
356
:there is an opportunity here to really share something
357
:in my message one too many
358
:that I should really consider
359
:and then it kind of started living in my mind
360
:and it finally then at the beginning of this year
361
:so just like eight months ago
362
:I really became super active in preparing for it
363
:and applying for it mm hmm
364
:and did you always know what you wanted to talk about
365
:great great question
366
:I think there is a journey there
367
:and again in
368
:in my book I'm going to describe this
369
:but it ha it's a little bit harder if you
370
:if you need to try on certain topics and see what fits
371
:it's like going yeah okay
372
:let me give you an example
373
:you're going to a thrift store
374
:and you're kind of browsing right
375
:and so you go over to the shoes
376
:and you go over to the bag
377
:and you look at jackets and like
378
:you could probably find a gem
379
:but you don't even know why you walked in
380
:and somebody will ask you
381
:can I help you and you're like oh
382
:I'm just browsing it will take a while
383
:maybe until you find something
384
:but you might find something amazing
385
:I think it's the same thing with a
386
:a TikTok or keynote
387
:if you already know what really changed your life
388
:or what is a message
389
:that you want to share with an audience
390
:the whole preparation will be totally different
391
:so for me um
392
:I started my trademark for my petite practice this
393
:small steps big impact
394
:in January
395
:and that's the same time when I started my Ted journey
396
:so I knew I wanted to talk about that
397
:because
398
:that's really what helped thousands of other people
399
:that's what I use in my personal life
400
:so there is that vulnerability story there
401
:there's you know
402
:there are testimonials there
403
:there is you know
404
:a case study there
405
:and so it just all kind of made sense to use that
406
:I just had to figure out how to package it up
407
:and so I was far more focused than like
408
:oh I wanna give a Ted talk
409
:I don't know what I'm gonna talk about
410
:but let's just do that I think that is great too
411
:but then again it's a little bit more
412
:you have to browse
413
:and you have to see what works and what fits
414
:and what feels good and and
415
:and let me make sure this is really
416
:really clear
417
:every stage of Ted has their own theme
418
:so it's not like you are
419
:yeah the quality matters
420
:it's just that the topic matters
421
:does it fit what they are looking for
422
:so it's not really they don't like you or your talk
423
:they just at that particular moment
424
:weren't looking for that right
425
:it's again
426
:it's just like going into a thrift store
427
:you might find something amazing
428
:but you're like
429
:I don't know when I'm going to wear that
430
:and so do I really buy it
431
:maybe not today it's exactly the same thing
432
:and I think you just need to be aware about that
433
:I mean I seriously
434
:I was on the stage
435
:there were people there with me
436
:that applied to 290 other stages
437
:some people have been trying
438
:this for 15 years and so what helps is to maybe
439
:in your mind become a little bit clear
440
:is that the best time
441
:do I need to work more on my visibility now
442
:do I have all the pieces in place
443
:and I think that's really what matters so much
444
:in a visibility journey and kind of like figuring out
445
:who am I why do I want to do this
446
:and what do I care about
447
:yeah do you feel like your
448
:your visibility and success prior to applying
449
:helped you secure that speaking opportunity
450
:is that really like
451
:the difference maker in your application
452
:versus
453
:the hundreds of others that came across their desk
454
:well what
455
:what ultimately changed their mind to accept me
456
:we will never know hahaha
457
:that one I don't know
458
:it was my my second application and it was accepted
459
:so um
460
:I don't I don't know that right
461
:but what I do know but sometimes it's just timing right
462
:it's it's divine timing
463
:you just never know
464
:they were looking for a certain conversation or topic
465
:and that's what you know your application spoke to them
466
:and you had this burning desire to share this story
467
:that matched what they were looking for
468
:it's everything happens for a reason
469
:we talk about this so much completely
470
:but it's truly truly
471
:and I think what helped me
472
:was that I was really intentional
473
:so again
474
:petite practice are small steps that lead to big impact
475
:and I was really intentional
476
:I was basically looking at a river
477
:that I wanted to cross a Ted being on the other side
478
:and I was really intentional and putting all
479
:the steps in place that get me to the other side
480
:and sometimes it was small steps
481
:and sometimes
482
:I thought I was actually slipping off my little rock
483
:into the water and I was like oh
484
:I don't know if this is going to work out or not
485
:um and that's okay too
486
:you'd I
487
:but I knew I wanted to get to the other side
488
:and so I talked about it a lot
489
:and I also felt that everything else leading up to it
490
:was um
491
:making it a little bit closer
492
:so I I
493
:I wrote my three books about it
494
:I have my podcast about it
495
:and I used the small steps
496
:big impact in each of those visibility elements
497
:right so I have my audio
498
:my podcast
499
:I have my print my books
500
:and then of course
501
:I have my life coaching in the classroom
502
:and so I used the same principle all over the place
503
:and it became something that was becoming so unique
504
:in terms of my brand that I felt that
505
:that really what set me apart that I
506
:that
507
:I had this whole system of visibility already set up
508
:and I think that helped a lot
509
:yeah so you talked a little bit about like
510
:what's next after you've reached this
511
:what I call visibility Pinnacle
512
:yeah right
513
:you talked a little bit about writing another book
514
:but what else do you see you know
515
:now that you've you've reached this level
516
:I mean obviously
517
:the sky's the limit for you and for anyone
518
:but what's on your radar for that next level
519
:in your visibility journey
520
:in your business journey in your personal journey
521
:yeah
522
:so the first thing I thought when I met everybody there
523
:the community was amazing
524
:I would love to give another TikTok
525
:because it was just such an amazing experience
526
:to be there to meet these other change makers
527
:these other ideators that come to this stage
528
:and share what they are passionate about
529
:to really feel that
530
:is something that I would love to experience again
531
:and then of course
532
:I would love to keep sharing my message on keynotes
533
:so now I'm writing my keynote
534
:and I'm also thinking of course
535
:how can I benefit people the most
536
:is it doing life trainings
537
:to where they come to my beautiful corner of the world
538
:here in California
539
:and I share that with them in the classroom
540
:is it via zoom is it being um
541
:incorporate settings so that's really what next for me
542
:that I I now know what
543
:what message I want to share
544
:and I'm going to basically look at this is like
545
:I made this this beautiful little burger
546
:and now I just need to figure out what the buns are
547
:that I can package it up
548
:and make it in different places
549
:I always call it a tomato sauce right
550
:so I have a really good tomato sauce
551
:and I even like
552
:grew the tomatoes myself
553
:because I trademark the petite practice
554
:and now I'm just going to reuse that tomato sauce
555
:in different settings so
556
:you know last night we made spaghetti
557
:but today maybe lasagna
558
:maybe tomorrow it's going to be pizza
559
:and so I'm basically looking at it as like
560
:alright to have something really good here
561
:now I just need to figure out how to move on
562
:and use that and make it different
563
:um and again
564
:help others in service of others
565
:like how can I help others to get there
566
:which is why people kept asking like oh
567
:how do you get to the Ted stage
568
:and I was like well
569
:I documented everything in my calendar
570
:in my journal in my notepads
571
:and I certainly took some very
572
:unconventional ways of preparing for it
573
:so I can't wait to write all this down ha ha ha
574
:yes I meant the people were like
575
:sometimes like
576
:you did what and I'm like yep
577
:it's gonna go uh yeah
578
:I'm definitely in the book
579
:yeah yeah
580
:so it's a it's not like
581
:you know it was just like um
582
:Barbie slipping into her little heels
583
:and stepping on the stage
584
:it wasn't quite like that
585
:not at all no yeah never
586
:that's amazing I can't wait to
587
:I can't wait to read that book
588
:so let's kind of wrap things up a little bit
589
:and I want to
590
:I want you to give some advice to the women listening
591
:who maybe feel invisible right now
592
:like what's one simple
593
:powerful step that they can take today
594
:to boost their presence their visibility
595
:their success or their confidence
596
:oh that's brilliant
597
:and that's exactly what I talked about in my
598
:in my TikTok right
599
:so I have this four part system that helps us
600
:and the first one is
601
:you have to simplify what your goal is
602
:I think the the overwhelm and the burnout
603
:frequently comes from looking at a goal
604
:and not even getting started
605
:because it seems so big so simplify
606
:break it down into little steps
607
:and then choose the one you wanna get started with
608
:and secondly
609
:honestly when my Ted talk will become live
610
:of course you will share it
611
:but I think the second step
612
:is nearly the most important one
613
:which is you have to tell somebody
614
:so if you're listening right now and you're like
615
:well I have this thing in the back of my mind simplify
616
:and then you have to tell others what that thing is
617
:right whether that's writing a book
618
:being on a podcast starting a podcast
619
:giving a keynote
620
:starting a workshop in your
621
:in your city I mean
622
:who knows what that is
623
:you have to tell others because then it becomes real
624
:and then you have to also
625
:and that's the third step examine
626
:you have to look a little bit on
627
:on your past month or even week
628
:and figure out what worked and toss what doesn't work
629
:and do more of what worked
630
:that's really the recipe
631
:you don't want to just keep looking forward
632
:just actually reflect back
633
:and then lastly that's the most important thing
634
:is praising your progress
635
:frequently
636
:we are so hard on ourselves and where we are like
637
:well so here she is
638
:you know like
639
:she's speaking at Ted
640
:and I don't even know how to get started
641
:and things like that um
642
:and again I I said
643
:you know
644
:this is obviously like an eight month journey for me
645
:but there were other people
646
:it took them 15 years so the
647
:the progress doesn't necessarily mean
648
:there's a prescription for a time that works
649
:I think it's just step by step
650
:so every day doing something on
651
:it is really what the magic is
652
:so if you're listening to this and you're like
653
:well I always wanted to do X y Z
654
:then look at that four step system
655
:you know the simplifying
656
:the telling the examining
657
:and the praising progress
658
:and try it out and I guarantee you will see results
659
:I guarantee you will see results
660
:it doesn't even have to be an hour
661
:just 15 minutes on each of those tasks
662
:and I know things will happen for you
663
:I love that oh
664
:it has been so amazing to have you on the podcast
665
:sharing your story talking to you
666
:learning from you just hearing your journey
667
:has not only impacted me
668
:but I know it will impact our listeners
669
:and so I just want to say thank you for
670
:for being a guest and having you here today
671
:um how can people get in touch with you
672
:follow you to see that Ted talk
673
:um where can they learn more about you
674
:check out my website it's doctor with now
675
:so it's d O C t o r and then my first name Christiana
676
:uh so that's C H R I s t I N E
677
:and that's my my main page
678
:where I'm going to also of course
679
:post the Ted talk and the books are available there
680
:you can look on Instagram
681
:Doctor Dot Christiana and of course
682
:my YouTube channel similar name
683
:Doctor Christiana is where I'm going to share
684
:some clips and everything of it
685
:and then my books on Amazon
686
:I'm working now on getting them out to more publishers
687
:I'm going to speak
688
:we get a big writers conference
689
:so they are curious about my publishing journey as well
690
:and again it's a little bit less conventional than
691
:maybe what other authors are doing
692
:and I'm also going to share that in my upcoming book
693
:but I think that if you have a question
694
:just email me that's the simplest thing
695
:I check my email box very um methodically
696
:um I am a professor
697
:so I need to make sure that I answer questions
698
:that's my full time job right
699
:it's info at doctor Christiana dot com
700
:and I would love to hear from you and help you
701
:amazing once again
702
:thank you so much for taking the time
703
:thank you for being here
704
:and I appreciate having you as a guest thank you
