In recent years, one stark issue that has surfaced is our children’s state of mental health — events like the heartbreaking incident at River Valley High and rising suicides among those aged 10-19 confront us. A recent poll conducted among 600 youth also revealed that more than half rarely or almost never share their personal problems with family. With such worrying incidents and statistics, how can parents help their children have a healthy view of themselves and know when to seek help?
Joining our host, Alicia Boo, for this episode is Dr. Liow Pei Hsiang — a psychiatrist, and mother of three young adult daughters. They share about and discuss the unique challenges that both youth and parents face in the specific aspects of emotional development, body image, self-esteem — and how parents can be alert to identify telling signs of when their children might be struggling and offer needful intervention.
Parenting is not a single sojourner’s path. If you are struggling to provide the support you feel your child needs in specific areas, our team at Focus on the Family Singapore is available to listen and journey with you. For more details on Counselling, visit www.family.org.sg/parentcoaching.
Also, as a response to the mental health needs of families during this season, Focus has curated resources and articles on a microsite, #StrongerwithFamily* (www.family.org.sg/StrongerwithFamily), to supplement and guide parents who desire to support their children and family members in the area of mental health. We hope that it would be a helpful resource in your parenting journey!
