Shownotes

Do you ever feel like your life is so crazy busy? And you wish you could push the pause button and escape the race? Me too! I believe Jesus valued the 'Pause' and invites us to do the same, "Be still and know that I am God." So How do we do this, join me on the trail and we can talk about how to practice the pause.

Transcripts

Speaker:

So Bonani Franz Judy here I am this

week's host for the Creative Spiritual

2

:

Journey podcast, where GUI and I walk

with you and share the joys and wonders

3

:

as well as the lessons we experience

along this marvelous journey of life.

4

:

I'm so glad you're here.

5

:

Today is day.

6

:

Ooh, I didn't look.

7

:

Day 600.

8

:

Okay, stay with me.

9

:

And 65, can you believe it?

10

:

Well, my friend time is winding down,

but it feels more like time is winding

11

:

up and the pace is a new kind of crazy.

12

:

Have you ever ran a race?

13

:

I've done a half marathon, and when

you see that finish line, a surge of

14

:

adrenaline hits you and you sprint,

you wonder where that came from.

15

:

It's ironic that I'm

calling today's episode.

16

:

Press pause.

17

:

When I'm in this crazy race at the moment,

in the yoga meditation world, there's a

18

:

saying, everyone needs to take at least

10 minutes each day for meditation, and

19

:

if you're too busy, well you need 40.

20

:

There is an old parable

called sharpening the ax.

21

:

I bet you've heard this before.

22

:

There were two woodsmen.

23

:

It challenged each other to see who could

chop down more trees in a single day.

24

:

At sunrise, they both began

cutting with all their strength.

25

:

One man worked tirelessly, never

stopping to rest the other paused, every

26

:

hour or so at the end of the day, the

man who stopped to rest had chopped

27

:

far more wood, the first wood cutter,

exhausted and frustrated, exclaimed.

28

:

How could you have cut

more trees than I did?

29

:

I never stopped.

30

:

The other man smiled and replied, ah.

31

:

But each time I stopped,

I wasn't just resting.

32

:

I was sharpening my ax.

33

:

Isn't that fabulous?

34

:

Do you feel like the first woods, the

first, the first word, wood cutter.

35

:

Ooh, how much wood would a wood chuck,

chuck if he wood chuck could chuck wood?

36

:

Oh my goodness.

37

:

Do you ever feel like that, that

you have exhausted yourself?

38

:

Chopping wood all day.

39

:

President Eser Taf Benson taught

that when we put God first, all other

40

:

things fall into their proper place.

41

:

In this sense, time spent in

meditation, in prayer and scripture,

42

:

studying and pondering and resting

on the Sabbath, it is not wasted.

43

:

It's sharpening our spiritual edge.

44

:

I wanna share with you a story.

45

:

Uh, this has happened so many

times here on mission, driving

46

:

through the countryside.

47

:

from here to there.

48

:

And after a long day of mission

work, and Eric and I we're not

49

:

agreeing about something and I can't

remember what it is, I felt bugged.

50

:

And there's these demons that

are beating me up in my head.

51

:

This is too much.

52

:

You can't do this.

53

:

And so I look at my phone to escape,

stressing about what to post and

54

:

what to do, and of course, falling

into that social media whole

55

:

and answering WhatsApp messages.

56

:

Most of those, which are people

reaching out for help and I don't

57

:

know how to respond, I feel exhausted,

and I just wanna go soak in a tub.

58

:

Oh, by, by the way, we don't

have, so my mind is racing.

59

:

I pause.

60

:

To close my eyes and I pray, heavenly

Father, please help me know what to do

61

:

and say, please help me feel thy peace.

62

:

When I stepped out of the car, I hear

the sounds of birds, my heart rate slows.

63

:

I feel a cool breeze.

64

:

Then I look towards the west at the

sunset and the sky is a brilliant

65

:

pink and purples and golds, and

there's huge thunder clouds.

66

:

Ah, now my shoulders and my jaw

tension begins to melt away.

67

:

And there it is, the pause my breath,

slowing, pausing to take it all in.

68

:

And then surprising words of gratitude.

69

:

Oh, I'm so grateful to be here.

70

:

Was that my voice?

71

:

I reach out and take Eric's hand.

72

:

Forgiveness washes over me, and this

all happens within just seconds.

73

:

Viktor Frankl, an author and psychologist

and also a, a Jew that survived the

74

:

World War II Holocaust encampment.

75

:

He wrote these words between

stimulus and response.

76

:

There is a space.

77

:

And in that space is our power to

choose our response, and in our response

78

:

lies our growth and our freedom.

79

:

I love the thought of this

superpower I have between stimulus

80

:

and response is my choice.

81

:

The difference between thinking

about doing something good and acting

82

:

on it can be a moment, a spiritual

hundredth of a second, and in that

83

:

second, that moment between stimulus

and response, we either respond to

84

:

the spirit's nudge or we let it pass.

85

:

That tiny difference shapes outcomes

in creativity, relationships,

86

:

and discipleship far more

than it seems in the moment.

87

:

In the Olympic races, a blink

of time, a hundredth of a second

88

:

separates a medal from a miss in life.

89

:

That same can be true spiritually.

90

:

The pause before we act on a

prompting, the instant between fear

91

:

and faith determines whether we step

into light or stay where we are.

92

:

How many times have you been in that

moment, like I was in the car and

93

:

wanted to just push a pause button?

94

:

Remember the old tape recording

machines, the cassette tapes with its

95

:

fast forward button, and it's rewind,

and record and play and pause button.

96

:

We all have been in some emotionally tense

moments, especially if you're married.

97

:

Conflict happens in all relationships.

98

:

It's very human of us, whether

in our families or with

99

:

our friends or at work or.

100

:

Our missionary companions,

we face tough situation.

101

:

In those moments, I find myself,

I wanna reach for the panic prayer

102

:

button because I'm praying in my mind,

ah, heavenly Father, help me here.

103

:

Instead.

104

:

I wish I could push that pause button

and able to freeze time whoosh and

105

:

let the Holy Ghost arrive and help me.

106

:

I am sure you're familiar

with Psalms 46, 10.

107

:

Be still and know that I am God.

108

:

Whenever anyone is preaching or teaching

about meditation or pondering, this

109

:

is a favorite scripture, but I wanna

read to you the next verse, verse

110

:

11, the Lord of host is with us.

111

:

The God of Jacob is our refuge.

112

:

See?

113

:

Sheila, this Hebrew word appears

74 times in the Old Testament.

114

:

In the past, I've read over it as an amen.

115

:

Paying no attention to it until I

dug a little deeper to find See?

116

:

is a Hebrew word that is meant

as an intentional pause in

117

:

the reading, a planned pause.

118

:

A pause long enough to ponder and breathe.

119

:

Okay.

120

:

Isn't that beautiful?

121

:

In Hebrew, the word Sheila, S-E-L-A-H most

likely signifies a musical instruction,

122

:

possibly meaning a pause reflection, or a

musical interlude within a song or reading

123

:

similar to a rest in a musical score.

124

:

He consistently calls for a response from

the reader or worshiper, whether that is

125

:

a quiet contemplation, exalting God with

loud song or a simple pause for breath.

126

:

Have you ever been in a choir?

127

:

I was in the bountiful high madrigals,

and I learned that when a comma appeared

128

:

in the lyrics or in the music score, this

was when we took our breath together.

129

:

The comma is like the sah, pause

for breath, the purpose of a pause.

130

:

Pause a ponder, pause to pray, pause

to praise, pause to plan, pause, to

131

:

prioritize the power of the pause, not

to talk louder or longer, but to learn

132

:

to pause and let the truth sink in.

133

:

Clarity comes in the pause.

134

:

Clarity.

135

:

Comes in the pause just recently

on a very crazy mission day.

136

:

Ah, another one.

137

:

They all are.

138

:

I was on an errand taking Tondo to

the doctor's office for her mission

139

:

medical exam while waiting, not

so patiently in the waiting room.

140

:

I notice this saying on the

wall Titled, practice the pause.

141

:

Pause before judging.

142

:

When in doubt, pause.

143

:

When angry.

144

:

Pause.

145

:

Pause before assuming when tired.

146

:

Pause when stressed.

147

:

Pause, pause before accusing, pause

whenever you're about to react

148

:

harshly and you'll avoid doing and

saying things you'll later regret.

149

:

And during the pause, pray.

150

:

Isn't that wonderful to choose, to

love, to forgive, to respond with

151

:

grace, to find joy or maybe even the

laughter in the humor of the moment,

152

:

to see the beauty and to be able

to behold others as God sees them.

153

:

And how about pausing to pray,

to let the Holy Ghost guide you?

154

:

This pause takes practice.

155

:

I'm sure it's something I will

be practicing all my life.

156

:

So I've decided friends that to help

you along this journey of practicing

157

:

the pause, I will include a guided

meditation, a little something to

158

:

listen to, preferably on a walk, but

fit it in wherever you can, driving

159

:

your car or sitting in stillness.

160

:

It's meant to help you

in the busyness of life.

161

:

Practicing hitting the pause button, zzz.

162

:

Between stimulus and response our

way, that magic wand to freeze,

163

:

to open that space where you meet

God in the stillness or the pause

164

:

Gui and I thank you for your time.

165

:

What a blessing to walk

together on this journey.

166

:

We love you and wish you the

peace promised by our savior.

167

:

I know the savior values the pause.

168

:

He paused in his life and invites us

to pause in ours, my peace I leave

169

:

with you not as the world giveth it.

170

:

Let let your heart be troubled, neither.

171

:

Let it be afraid for I have

overcome the world and in me.

172

:

You shall have peace be of good cheer.

173

:

I will send you the comforter.

174

:

Lift up your head and rejoice.

175

:

I will be with you in your heart.

176

:

Be still and know that I am God.

177

:

There's just a little bit left of

our journey here in South Africa.

178

:

How do you ever say goodbye?

179

:

I've never been good at goodbyes.

180

:

So instead I'm gonna say,

181

:

ah, what does that mean?

182

:

It means I'll see you soon.

183

:

Stay well, my friends.

184

:

we love that you have

chosen to walk with us.

185

:

And if you know someone that is a

little crazy and thinks they don't

186

:

have enough time to push, pause,

187

:

And if you can push pause and take time

to give us a rating or write us a review

188

:

gui, and I sure would appreciate that.

189

:

That is how we grow and maintain

motivation to keep on going.

190

:

Thanks friends, I'll see you on the trail.
