Nathan:

Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

Jesus. Matthew 6:16. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is Day 9 of 30 Days on the Mount of Blessing, PT 2.

Jesus’ words remind me of the basketball player who exaggerates the fall to get the ref’s attention—and hopefully a favorable penalty call. These religious leaders made certain the painful sacrifices they were making got noticed—by as many as possible! They were definitely NOT skipping that tasty pizza dinner for nothing. They craved the sympathy and admiration that came their way as the folks around them took note of their deep dedication. Unfortunately, it was a total waste of effort. The point of fasting has never been to get people’s—or even God’s—attention. In fact, no sacrifice is to be exaggerated or talked up so that people notice how much our dedication is costing us. If I’m honest, I know exactly what I do when I sacrifice to get attention. I complain. I tell others how hard it is. I make some noise that appropriately reflects the price I’m paying to serve. And my service is essentially wasted.
