Shownotes

Summary:

Dr. Jim argues that one image from July 4th captured the United States better than any official celebration could: a white woman ignoring masked white supremacists marching around her.

In this episode, he uses that image to critique the myth of American celebration at the 250-year mark. The country, he argues, has always depended on looking away from deliberate evil while benefiting from it. From slavery and racial exploitation to the dehumanization of Black people, brown people, gay people, and trans people, Dr. Jim frames the Patriot Front march not as a break from American history, but as a continuation of it.

The core message: America at 250 is not a contradiction. It is the same country it has always been.

Transcripts

Dr. Jim: I can't think of a better metaphor for the US than this image of a white woman surrounded by members of the Patriot Front, looking away and ignoring what's happening around her, completely ignoring the evil that is surrounding her, and she's carrying on with her day as if nothing happened.

[00:00:25] And for those of you who didn't know, July 4th was supposed to be some massive 250th celebration that as usual, the reverse Midas touch of Trump completely ruined. The 250th anniversary of the United States should have been cause for some massive celebration and should be a year that is filled with a lot of memorable moments.

[:

[00:01:22] All of these people who are supposedly so proud of their skin color never have the courage to actually show their face and stand 10 toes down. This is typical of this crowd. But what's interesting about these people marching through the Capitol on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is that this is par for the course. This is baked into the history of the US

[:

[00:02:10] So the fact that these people are marching masked while cheering on white supremacy shouldn't be surprising. In fact, what should be surprising is that they're hiding behind masks when the history and DNA of the US is plain for everybody to see.

[:

[00:03:03] This is a country that has built centuries of oppression into its DNA. You don't have to look very far throughout the history of this country to notice how many different racial minorities and ethnic groups have been ground down for cheap labor . This is a country that's made a habit of subjugating ethnicities from the Global South at any opportunity in order to extract the cheapest possible labor from them. This is a country that spent years questioning the humanity of Black people. This is a country that is spent years questioning the humanity of brown people.

[:

[00:04:11] Because the bottom line is that unless it involves accumulating money, this country is made up of a nation of cowards, people who are not willing to step forward and punch back against obvious evil because it would be in-inconvenient for them. The fact that these people were allowed to march, massed by the hundreds in DC without getting turned into speed bumps tells you more than you could ever read in a book And the fact that that white woman was completely ignoring what's going on around her, that's actually a better response than what has been typical of white people and white women in general.

[:

[00:05:15] And that is the United States at two-fifty. It's not something to celebrate It is a country that is doing and acting the same way that it's always acted And if what I'm saying offends you or hurts your feelings, that's because you're not accustomed to being exposed to the truth of what this country is really about. And the quicker you get over that and start looking at the truth and how this country treats people, the better off you'll be
