“The Wind in the Willows”,

Please enjoy:

Chapter II, by Kenneth Grahame

Please enjoy:

"RATTY," said the Mole suddenly, one bright summer morning,

Please enjoy:

"if you please, I want to ask you a favour."

Please enjoy:

The Rat was sitting on the river bank,

Please enjoy:

singing a little song.

Please enjoy:

He had just composed it himself, so he was very taken up with it,

Please enjoy:

and would not pay proper attention to Mole or anything else.

Please enjoy:

Since early morning he had been swimming in the river,

Please enjoy:

in company with his friends the ducks.

Please enjoy:

And when the ducks stood on their heads suddenly,

Please enjoy:

as ducks will, he would dive down

Please enjoy:

and tickle their necks,

Please enjoy:

just under where their chins would be if ducks had chins,

Please enjoy:

till they were forced to come to the surface again in a hurry,

Please enjoy:

spluttering and angry

Please enjoy:

and shaking their feathers at him,

Please enjoy:

for it is impossible to say quite all you feel when your head is under water.

Please enjoy:

At last they implored him to go away and attend to his own affairs

Please enjoy:

and leave them to mind theirs.

Please enjoy:

So the Rat went away,

Please enjoy:

and sat on the river bank in the sun,

Please enjoy:

and made up a song about them,

Please enjoy:

which he called "DUCKS' DITTY."

Please enjoy:

All along the backwater, Through the rushes tall,

Please enjoy:

Ducks are a-dabbling,

Please enjoy:

Up tails all! Ducks' tails, drakes' tails, Yellow feet a-quiver,

Please enjoy:

Yellow bills all out of sight Busy in the river!

Please enjoy:

Slushy green undergrowth

Please enjoy:

Where the roach swim—

Please enjoy:

Here we keep our larder,

Please enjoy:

Cool and full and dim.

Please enjoy:

Everyone for what he likes! We like to be

Please enjoy:

Heads down, tails up, Dabbling free!

Please enjoy:

High in the blue above Swifts whirl and call— We are

Please enjoy:

down a-dabbling

Please enjoy:

Up tails all! "I don't know that I think so very much of that little song, Rat,"

Please enjoy:

observed the Mole cautiously.

Please enjoy:

He was no poet himself and didn't care who knew it;

Please enjoy:

and he had a candid nature.

Please enjoy:

"Nor don't the ducks neither,"

Please enjoy:

replied the Rat cheerfully.

Please enjoy:

"They say, 'Why can't fellows be allowed to do what they like when they like

Please enjoy:

and as they like, instead of

Please enjoy:

other fellows sitting on banks and

Please enjoy:

watching them all the time and making remarks and poetry and things about them?

Please enjoy:

What nonsense it all is!'

Please enjoy:

That's what the ducks say."

Please enjoy:

"So it is, so it is," said the Mole,

Please enjoy:

with great heartiness.

Please enjoy:

"No, it isn't!" cried the Rat indignantly.

Please enjoy:

"Well then, it isn't, it isn't,"

Please enjoy:

replied the Mole soothingly.

Please enjoy:

"But what I wanted to ask you was,

Please enjoy:

won't you take me to call on Mr. Toad?

Please enjoy:

I've heard so much about him,

Please enjoy:

and I do so want to make his acquaintance."

Please enjoy:

"Why, certainly," said the good-natured Rat,

Please enjoy:

jumping to his feet

Please enjoy:

and dismissing poetry from his mind for the day.

Please enjoy:

"Get the boat out,

Please enjoy:

and we'll paddle up there at once.

Please enjoy:

It's never the wrong time to call on Toad.

Please enjoy:

Early or late he's always the same fellow.

Please enjoy:

Always good-tempered,

Please enjoy:

always glad to see you,

Please enjoy:

always sorry when you go!"

Please enjoy:

"He must be a very nice animal,"

Please enjoy:

observed the Mole,

Please enjoy:

as he got into the boat and took the sculls,

Please enjoy:

while the Rat settled himself comfortably in the stern.

Please enjoy:

"He is indeed the best of animals," replied Rat.

Please enjoy:

"So simple, so good-natured, and so affectionate.

Please enjoy:

Perhaps he's not very clever

Please enjoy:

—we can't all be geniuses;

Please enjoy:

and it may be that he is both boastful and conceited.

Please enjoy:

But he has got some great qualities, has Toady."

Please enjoy:

Rounding a bend in the river,

Please enjoy:

they came in sight of a handsome,

Please enjoy:

dignified old house of mellowed red brick,

Please enjoy:

with well-kept lawns

Please enjoy:

reaching down to the water's edge.

Please enjoy:

"There's Toad Hall,"

Please enjoy:

said the Rat; "and that creek on the left,

Please enjoy:

where the notice-board says, 'Private.

Please enjoy:

No landing allowed,'

Please enjoy:

leads to his boat-house,

Please enjoy:

where we'll leave the boat.

Please enjoy:

The stables are over there to the right.

Please enjoy:

That's the banqueting-hall you're looking at now— very old, that is.

Please enjoy:

Toad is rather rich, you know,

Please enjoy:

and this is really one of the nicest houses in these parts,

Please enjoy:

though we never admit as much to Toad."

Please enjoy:

They glided up the creek,

Please enjoy:

and the Mole slipped his sculls as they passed into the shadow of a large boat-house.

Please enjoy:

Here they saw many handsome boats,

Please enjoy:

slung from the cross beams

Please enjoy:

or hauled up on a slip, but none in the water;

Please enjoy:

and the place had an

Please enjoy:

unused and a deserted air.

Please enjoy:

The Rat looked around him.

Please enjoy:

"I understand," said he.

Please enjoy:

"Boating is played out.

Please enjoy:

He's tired of it, and done with it.

Please enjoy:

I wonder what new fad he has taken up now?

Please enjoy:

Come along and let's look him up.

Please enjoy:

We shall hear all about it quite soon enough."

Please enjoy:

They disembarked,

Please enjoy:

and strolled across the gay flower-decked lawns in search of Toad,

Please enjoy:

whom they presently happened upon resting in a wicker garden-chair,

Please enjoy:

with a pre-occupied expression of face,

Please enjoy:

and a large map spread out on his knees.

Please enjoy:

"Hooray!" he cried, jumping up on seeing them,

Please enjoy:

"this is splendid!"

Please enjoy:

He shook the paws of both of them warmly,

Please enjoy:

never waiting for an introduction to the Mole.

Please enjoy:

"How kind of you!" he went on,

Please enjoy:

dancing round them.

Please enjoy:

"I was just going to send a boat down the river for you, Ratty,

Please enjoy:

with strict orders that you were to be fetched up here at once,

Please enjoy:

whatever you were doing.

Please enjoy:

I want you badly

Please enjoy:

—both of you. Now what will you take?

Please enjoy:

Come inside and have something! You don't know how lucky it is, your turning up just now!"

Please enjoy:

"Let's sit quiet a bit, Toady!"

Please enjoy:

said the Rat, throwing himself into an easy chair,

Please enjoy:

while the Mole took another by the side of him

Please enjoy:

and made some civil remark about Toad's

Please enjoy:

"delightful residence."

Please enjoy:

"Finest house on the whole river,"

Please enjoy:

cried Toad boisterously.

Please enjoy:

"Or anywhere else, for that matter,"

Please enjoy:

he could not help adding. Here

Please enjoy:

the Rat nudged the Mole.

Please enjoy:

Unfortunately the Toad saw him do it,

Please enjoy:

and turned very red.

Please enjoy:

There was a moment's painful silence.

Please enjoy:

Then Toad burst out laughing.

Please enjoy:

"All right, Ratty," he said.

Please enjoy:

"It's only my way, you know.

Please enjoy:

And it's not such a very bad house, is it?

Please enjoy:

You know you rather like it yourself.

Please enjoy:

Now, look here. Let's be sensible.

Please enjoy:

You are the very animals I wanted.

Please enjoy:

You've got to help me.

Please enjoy:

It's most important!"

Please enjoy:

"It's about your rowing, I suppose,"

Please enjoy:

said the Rat, with an innocent air.

Please enjoy:

"You're getting on fairly well,

Please enjoy:

though you splash a good bit still.

Please enjoy:

With a great deal of patience, and any quantity of coaching, you may——" "O,

Please enjoy:

pooh! boating!" interrupted the Toad, in great disgust.

Please enjoy:

"Silly boyish amusement.

Please enjoy:

I've given that up long ago. Sheer waste of time, that's what it is.

Please enjoy:

It makes me downright sorry to see you fellows, who ought to know better,

Please enjoy:

spending all your energies in that aimless manner.

Please enjoy:

No, I've discovered the real thing,

Please enjoy:

the only genuine occupation for a lifetime.

Please enjoy:

I propose to devote the remainder of mine to it,

Please enjoy:

and can only regret the wasted years that lie behind me,

Please enjoy:

squandered in trivialities.

Please enjoy:

Come with me, dear Ratty,

Please enjoy:

and your amiable friend also, if he will be so very good,

Please enjoy:

just as far as the stable-yard,

Please enjoy:

and you shall see what you shall see!"

Please enjoy:

He led the way to the stable-yard accordingly,

Please enjoy:

the Rat following with a most mistrustful expression;

Please enjoy:

and there, drawn out of the coach-house into the open,

Please enjoy:

they saw a gipsy caravan,

Please enjoy:

shining with newness,

Please enjoy:

painted a canary-yellow picked out with green,

Please enjoy:

and red wheels. "There you are!"

Please enjoy:

cried the Toad, straddling and expanding himself.

Please enjoy:

"There's real life for you,

Please enjoy:

embodied in that little cart.

Please enjoy:

The open road, the dusty highway,

Please enjoy:

the heath, the common,

Please enjoy:

the hedgerows, the rolling downs!

Please enjoy:

Camps, villages, towns, cities!

Please enjoy:

Here to-day, up and off to somewhere else to-morrow!

Please enjoy:

Travel, change, interest, excitement!

Please enjoy:

The whole world before you,

Please enjoy:

and a horizon that's always changing!

Please enjoy:

And mind! this is the very finest cart of its sort that was ever built,

Please enjoy:

without any exception.

Please enjoy:

Come inside and look at the arrangements.

Please enjoy:

Planned 'em all myself, I did!"

Please enjoy:

The Mole was tremendously interested and excited,

Please enjoy:

and followed him eagerly up the steps and into the interior of the caravan.

Please enjoy:

The Rat only snorted

Please enjoy:

and thrust his hands deep into his pockets,

Please enjoy:

remaining where he was.

Please enjoy:

It was indeed very compact and comfortable.

Please enjoy:

Little sleeping bunks

Please enjoy:

—a little table that folded up against the wall

Please enjoy:

—a cooking-stove,

Please enjoy:

lockers, bookshelves,

Please enjoy:

a bird-cage with a bird in it;

Please enjoy:

and pots, pans,

Please enjoy:

jugs and kettles of every size and variety.

Please enjoy:

"All complete!" said the Toad triumphantly,

Please enjoy:

pulling open a locker.

Please enjoy:

"You see—biscuits,

Please enjoy:

potted lobster, sardines

Please enjoy:

—everything you can possibly want.

Please enjoy:

Soda-water here—baccy there

Please enjoy:

—letter-paper, bacon, jam, cards and dominoes—you'll find,"

Please enjoy:

he continued, as they descended the steps again,

Please enjoy:

"you'll find that nothing whatever has been forgotten, when we make our start this afternoon.'

Please enjoy:

"I beg your pardon,"

Please enjoy:

said the Rat slowly, as he chewed a straw,

Please enjoy:

"but did I overhear you say something about 'we,'

Please enjoy:

and 'start,' and 'this afternoon'?"

Please enjoy:

"Now, you dear good old Ratty,"

Please enjoy:

said Toad, imploringly,

Please enjoy:

"don't begin talking in that stiff and sniffy sort of way,

Please enjoy:

because you know you've got to come.

Please enjoy:

I can't possibly manage without you,

Please enjoy:

so please consider it settled, and don't argue

Please enjoy:

—it's the one thing I can't stand.

Please enjoy:

You surely don't mean to stick to your

Please enjoy:

dull fusty old river all your life,

Please enjoy:

and just live in a hole in a bank,

Please enjoy:

and boat? I want to show you the world!

Please enjoy:

I'm going to make an animal of you, my boy!"

Please enjoy:

"I don't care," said the Rat, doggedly.

Please enjoy:

"I'm not coming, and that's flat.

Please enjoy:

And I am going to stick to my old river, and live in a hole, and boat,

Please enjoy:

as I've always done.

Please enjoy:

And what's more, Mole's going to stick to me and do as I do,

Please enjoy:

aren't you, Mole?" "Of course I am,"

Please enjoy:

said the Mole, loyally.

Please enjoy:

"I'll always stick to you, Rat,

Please enjoy:

and what you say is to be

Please enjoy:

—has got to be. All the same,

Please enjoy:

it sounds as if it might have been

Please enjoy:

—well, rather fun, you know!"

Please enjoy:

he added, wistfully.

Please enjoy:

Poor Mole! The Life Adventurous was so new a thing to him,

Please enjoy:

and so thrilling;

Please enjoy:

and this fresh aspect of it was so tempting;

Please enjoy:

and he had fallen in love at first sight

Please enjoy:

with the canary-coloured cart

Please enjoy:

and all its little fitments.

Please enjoy:

The Rat saw what was passing in his mind,

Please enjoy:

and wavered. He hated disappointing people,

Please enjoy:

and he was fond of the Mole,

Please enjoy:

and would do almost anything to oblige him.

Please enjoy:

Toad was watching both of them closely.

Please enjoy:

"Come along in, and have some lunch,"

Please enjoy:

he said, diplomatically,

Please enjoy:

"and we'll talk it over.

Please enjoy:

We needn't decide anything in a hurry.

Please enjoy:

Of course, I don't really care.

Please enjoy:

I only want to give pleasure to you fellows. 'Live

Please enjoy:

for others!' That's my motto in life."

Please enjoy:

During luncheon—which was

Please enjoy:

excellent, of course,

Please enjoy:

as everything at Toad Hall always was

Please enjoy:

—the Toad simply let himself go.

Please enjoy:

Disregarding the Rat,

Please enjoy:

he proceeded to play upon the inexperienced Mole as on a harp.

Please enjoy:

Naturally a voluble animal,

Please enjoy:

and always mastered by his imagination,

Please enjoy:

he painted the prospects of the trip

Please enjoy:

and the joys of the open life and the roadside in such glowing colours

Please enjoy:

that the Mole could hardly sit in his chair for excitement.

Please enjoy:

Somehow, it soon seemed taken for granted by all three of them that the trip was a settled thing;

Please enjoy:

and the Rat, though still unconvinced in his mind,

Please enjoy:

allowed his good-nature to over-ride his personal objections.

Please enjoy:

He could not bear to disappoint his two friends,

Please enjoy:

who were already deep in schemes and anticipations,

Please enjoy:

planning out each day's separate occupation

Please enjoy:

for several weeks ahead.

Please enjoy:

When they were quite ready,

Please enjoy:

the now triumphant Toad led his companions to the paddock

Please enjoy:

and set them to capture the old grey horse, who,

Please enjoy:

without having been consulted,

Please enjoy:

and to his own extreme annoyance,

Please enjoy:

had been told off by Toad

Please enjoy:

for the dustiest job in this dusty expedition.

Please enjoy:

He frankly preferred the paddock,

Please enjoy:

and took a deal of catching.

Please enjoy:

Meantime Toad packed the lockers still tighter with necessaries,

Please enjoy:

and hung nosebags,

Please enjoy:

nets of onions, bundles of hay, and baskets from the bottom of the cart.

Please enjoy:

At last the horse was caught and harnessed,

Please enjoy:

and they set off,

Please enjoy:

all talking at once,

Please enjoy:

each animal either trudging by the side of the cart

Please enjoy:

or sitting on the shaft, as the humour took him.

Please enjoy:

It was a golden afternoon.

Please enjoy:

The smell of the dust they kicked up was rich and satisfying;

Please enjoy:

out of thick orchards on either side the road,

Please enjoy:

birds called and whistled to them cheerily;

Please enjoy:

good-natured wayfarers, passing them,

Please enjoy:

gave them "Good-day,"

Please enjoy:

or stopped to say nice things about their beautiful cart;

Please enjoy:

and rabbits, sitting at their front doors in the hedgerows,

Please enjoy:

held up their fore-paws, and said,

Please enjoy:

"O my! O my! O my!"

Please enjoy:

Late in the evening,

Please enjoy:

tired and happy and miles from home,

Please enjoy:

they drew up on a remote common far from habitations,

Please enjoy:

turned the horse loose to graze,

Please enjoy:

and ate their simple supper sitting on the grass by the side of the cart.

Please enjoy:

Toad talked big about all he was going to do in the days to come,

Please enjoy:

while stars grew fuller and larger all around them,

Please enjoy:

and a yellow moon, appearing suddenly

Please enjoy:

and silently from nowhere in particular,

Please enjoy:

came to keep them company

Please enjoy:

and listen to their talk.

Please enjoy:

At last they turned in to their little bunks in the cart;

Please enjoy:

and Toad, kicking out his legs,

Please enjoy:

sleepily said, "Well, good night, you fellows!

Please enjoy:

This is the real life for a gentleman!

Please enjoy:

Talk about your old river!"

Please enjoy:

"I don't talk about my river,"

Please enjoy:

replied the patient Rat.

Please enjoy:

"You know I don't, Toad.

Please enjoy:

But I think about it,"

Please enjoy:

he added pathetically,

Please enjoy:

in a lower tone: "I think about it—all the time!"

Please enjoy:

The Mole reached out from under his blanket,

Please enjoy:

felt for the Rat's paw in the darkness,

Please enjoy:

and gave it a squeeze.

Please enjoy:

"I'll do whatever you like, Ratty,"

Please enjoy:

he whispered. "Shall we run away tomorrow morning,

Please enjoy:

quite early—very early

Please enjoy:

—and go back to our dear old hole on the river?"

Please enjoy:

"No, no, we'll see it out,"

Please enjoy:

whispered back the Rat.

Please enjoy:

"Thanks awfully, but I ought to stick by Toad till this trip is ended.

Please enjoy:

It wouldn't be safe for him to be left to himself.

Please enjoy:

It won't take very long.

Please enjoy:

His fads never do.

Please enjoy:

Good night!" The end was indeed nearer than even the Rat suspected.

Please enjoy:

After so much open air and excitement

Please enjoy:

the Toad slept very soundly,

Please enjoy:

and no amount of shaking could rouse him out of bed next morning.

Please enjoy:

So the Mole and Rat turned to,

Please enjoy:

quietly and manfully,

Please enjoy:

and while the Rat saw to the horse, and lit a fire,

Please enjoy:

and cleaned last night's cups and platters, and got things ready for breakfast,

Please enjoy:

the Mole trudged off to the nearest village,

Please enjoy:

a long way off, for milk and eggs and various necessaries the Toad had,

Please enjoy:

of course, forgotten to provide.

Please enjoy:

The hard work had all been done,

Please enjoy:

and the two animals were resting, thoroughly exhausted,

Please enjoy:

by the time Toad appeared on the scene,

Please enjoy:

fresh and gay, remarking what a pleasant,

Please enjoy:

easy life it was they were all leading now,

Please enjoy:

after the cares and worries and fatigues of housekeeping at home.

Please enjoy:

They had a pleasant ramble that day over grassy downs and along narrow by-lanes,

Please enjoy:

and camped, as before, on a common,

Please enjoy:

only this time the two guests took care that Toad should do his fair share of work.

Please enjoy:

In consequence, when the time came for starting next morning,

Please enjoy:

Toad was by no means so rapturous about the simplicity of the primitive life,

Please enjoy:

and indeed attempted to resume his place in his bunk,

Please enjoy:

whence he was hauled by force.

Please enjoy:

Their way lay, as before,

Please enjoy:

across country by narrow lanes,

Please enjoy:

and it was not till the afternoon

Please enjoy:

that they came out on the high-road,

Please enjoy:

their first high-road;

Please enjoy:

and there disaster,

Please enjoy:

fleet and unforeseen, sprang out on them

Please enjoy:

—disaster momentous indeed

Please enjoy:

to their expedition,

Please enjoy:

but simply overwhelming in its effect

Please enjoy:

on the after career of Toad.

Please enjoy:

They were strolling along the high-road easily,

Please enjoy:

the Mole by the horse's head,

Please enjoy:

talking to him, since the horse had complained that he was being frightfully left out of it,

Please enjoy:

and nobody considered him in the least;

Please enjoy:

the Toad and the Water Rat walking behind the cart talking together

Please enjoy:

—at least Toad was talking, and Rat was saying at intervals,

Please enjoy:

"Yes, precisely; and what did you say to him?"

Please enjoy:

—and thinking all the time of something very different,

Please enjoy:

when far behind them

Please enjoy:

they heard a faint

Please enjoy:

warning hum, like the drone of a distant bee.

Please enjoy:

Glancing back, they saw a small cloud of

Please enjoy:

dust, with a dark centre of energy,

Please enjoy:

advancing on them at incredible speed,

Please enjoy:

while from out the dust

Please enjoy:

a faint "Poop-poop!" wailed like an uneasy animal in pain.

Please enjoy:

Hardly regarding it, they turned to resume their conversation,

Please enjoy:

when in an instant (as it seemed)

Please enjoy:

the peaceful scene was changed,

Please enjoy:

and with a blast of wind

Please enjoy:

and a whirl of sound that made them jump for the nearest ditch,

Please enjoy:

It was on them! The "Poop-poop"

Please enjoy:

rang with a brazen shout in their ears,

Please enjoy:

they had a moment's glimpse of an interior of

Please enjoy:

glittering plate-glass and

Please enjoy:

rich morocco, and the magnificent motor-car,

Please enjoy:

immense, breath-snatching,

Please enjoy:

passionate, with its pilot tense

Please enjoy:

and hugging his wheel,

Please enjoy:

possessed all earth and air for the fraction of a second,

Please enjoy:

flung an enveloping cloud of dust that blinded and enwrapped them utterly,

Please enjoy:

and then dwindled to a speck in the far distance,

Please enjoy:

changed back into a droning bee once more.

Please enjoy:

The old grey horse,

Please enjoy:

dreaming, as he plodded along,

Please enjoy:

of his quiet paddock,

Please enjoy:

in a new raw situation such as this simply abandoned himself to his natural emotions.

Please enjoy:

Rearing, plunging,

Please enjoy:

backing steadily, in spite of all the Mole's efforts at his head,

Please enjoy:

and all the Mole's lively language directed at his better feelings,

Please enjoy:

he drove the cart backwards towards the deep ditch at the side of the road.

Please enjoy:

It wavered an instant

Please enjoy:

—then there was a heart-rending crash

Please enjoy:

—and the canary-coloured cart, their pride and their joy,

Please enjoy:

lay on its side in the ditch,

Please enjoy:

an irredeemable wreck.

Please enjoy:

The Rat danced up and down in the road,

Please enjoy:

simply transported with passion.

Please enjoy:

"You villains!" he shouted, shaking both fists,

Please enjoy:

"You scoundrels, you highwaymen, you—you

Please enjoy:

—road-hogs!—I'll have the law of you!

Please enjoy:

I'll report you! I'll take you through all the Courts!"

Please enjoy:

His home-sickness had quite slipped away from him,

Please enjoy:

and for the moment he was the skipper of the canary-coloured vessel

Please enjoy:

driven on a shoal by the reckless jockeying

Please enjoy:

of rival mariners,

Please enjoy:

and he was trying to recollect all the fine and biting things he used to say to

Please enjoy:

masters of steam-launches when their wash,

Please enjoy:

as they drove too near the bank,

Please enjoy:

used to flood his parlour-carpet at home.

Please enjoy:

Toad sat straight down in the middle of the dusty road,

Please enjoy:

his legs stretched out before him,

Please enjoy:

and stared fixedly in the direction of the disappearing motor-car.

Please enjoy:

He breathed short,

Please enjoy:

his face wore a placid satisfied expression,

Please enjoy:

and at intervals he faintly murmured "Poop

Please enjoy:

-poop!" The Mole was busy trying to quiet the horse,

Please enjoy:

which he succeeded in doing after a time.

Please enjoy:

Then he went to look at the cart,

Please enjoy:

on its side in the ditch.

Please enjoy:

It was indeed a sorry sight.

Please enjoy:

Panels and windows smashed,

Please enjoy:

axles hopelessly bent,

Please enjoy:

one wheel off, sardine-tins scattered over the wide world,

Please enjoy:

and the bird in the bird-cage sobbing pitifully

Please enjoy:

and calling to be let out.

Please enjoy:

The Rat came to help him,

Please enjoy:

but their united efforts were not sufficient to right the cart.

Please enjoy:

"Hi! Toad!" they cried.

Please enjoy:

"Come and bear a hand, can't you!"

Please enjoy:

The Toad never answered a word,

Please enjoy:

or budged from his seat in the road;

Please enjoy:

so they went to see what was the matter with him.

Please enjoy:

They found him in a sort of a trance,

Please enjoy:

a happy smile on his face,

Please enjoy:

his eyes still fixed on the dusty wake of their destroyer.

Please enjoy:

At intervals he was still heard to murmur

Please enjoy:

"Poop-poop!" The Rat shook him by the shoulder.

Please enjoy:

"Are you coming to help us, Toad?"

Please enjoy:

he demanded sternly.

Please enjoy:

"Glorious, stirring sight!"

Please enjoy:

murmured Toad, never offering to move.

Please enjoy:

"The poetry of motion!

Please enjoy:

The real way to travel!

Please enjoy:

The only way to travel!

Please enjoy:

Here to-day—in next week to-morrow!

Please enjoy:

Villages skipped,

Please enjoy:

towns and cities jumped

Please enjoy:

—always somebody else's horizon!

Please enjoy:

O bliss! O poop-poop! O my! O my!"

Please enjoy:

"O stop being an ass, Toad!"

Please enjoy:

cried the Mole despairingly.

Please enjoy:

"And to think I never knew!"

Please enjoy:

went on the Toad

Please enjoy:

in a dreamy monotone.

Please enjoy:

"All those wasted years that lie behind me,

Please enjoy:

I never knew, never even dreamt!

Please enjoy:

But now—but now that I know,

Please enjoy:

now that I fully realise! O what a flowery track lies spread before me, henceforth!

Please enjoy:

What dust-clouds shall spring up behind me as I speed on my reckless way!

Please enjoy:

What carts I shall fling carelessly into the ditch

Please enjoy:

in the wake of my magnificent onset!

Please enjoy:

Horrid little carts

Please enjoy:

—common carts—canary-coloured carts!'

Please enjoy:

"What are we to do with him?"

Please enjoy:

asked the Mole of the Water Rat.

Please enjoy:

"Nothing at all," replied the Rat firmly.

Please enjoy:

"Because there is really nothing to be done.

Please enjoy:

You see, I know him from of old.

Please enjoy:

He is now possessed.

Please enjoy:

He has got a new craze,

Please enjoy:

and it always takes him that way, in its first stage.

Please enjoy:

He'll continue like that for days now,

Please enjoy:

like an animal walking in a happy dream,

Please enjoy:

quite useless for all practical purposes.

Please enjoy:

Never mind him. Let's go and see what there is to be done about the cart."

Please enjoy:

A careful inspection showed them that,

Please enjoy:

even if they succeeded in righting it by themselves,

Please enjoy:

the cart would travel no longer.

Please enjoy:

The axles were in a hopeless state,

Please enjoy:

and the missing wheel was shattered into pieces.

Please enjoy:

The Rat knotted the horse's reins over his back

Please enjoy:

and took him by the head,

Please enjoy:

carrying the bird-cage and its hysterical occupant in the other hand.

Please enjoy:

"Come on!" he said grimly to the Mole.

Please enjoy:

"It's five or six miles to the nearest town,

Please enjoy:

and we shall just have to walk it.

Please enjoy:

The sooner we make a start the better."

Please enjoy:

"But what about Toad?"

Please enjoy:

asked the Mole anxiously,

Please enjoy:

as they set off together.

Please enjoy:

"We can't leave him here,

Please enjoy:

sitting in the middle of the road by himself,

Please enjoy:

in the distracted state he's in!

Please enjoy:

It's not safe.

Please enjoy:

Supposing another

Please enjoy:

Thing were to come along?" "O, bother Toad," said the Rat savagely;

Please enjoy:

"I've done with him!"

Please enjoy:

They had not proceeded very far on their way, however,

Please enjoy:

when there was a pattering of feet behind them,

Please enjoy:

and Toad caught them up

Please enjoy:

and thrust a paw inside the elbow of each of them;

Please enjoy:

still breathing short

Please enjoy:

and staring into vacancy.

Please enjoy:

"Now, look here, Toad!"

Please enjoy:

said the Rat sharply:

Please enjoy:

"as soon as we get to the town,

Please enjoy:

you'll have to go straight to the police-station,

Please enjoy:

and see if they know anything about that motor

Please enjoy:

-car and who it belongs to,

Please enjoy:

and lodge a complaint against it.

Please enjoy:

And then you'll have to go to a blacksmith's or a

Please enjoy:

wheelwright's and arrange for the cart to be fetched and mended

Please enjoy:

and put to rights.

Please enjoy:

It'll take time, but it's not quite a hopeless smash.

Please enjoy:

Meanwhile, the Mole and I will go to an inn

Please enjoy:

and find comfortable rooms where we can stay till the cart's ready,

Please enjoy:

and till your nerves have recovered their shock."

Please enjoy:

"Police-station! Complaint!"

Please enjoy:

murmured Toad dreamily. 'Me

Please enjoy:

complain of that

Please enjoy:

beautiful, that heavenly vision

Please enjoy:

that has been vouchsafed me!

Please enjoy:

Mend the cart! I've done with carts for ever.

Please enjoy:

I never want to see the cart, or to hear of it, again.

Please enjoy:

O, Ratty! You can't think

Please enjoy:

how obliged I am to you for

Please enjoy:

consenting to come on this trip!

Please enjoy:

I wouldn't have gone without you,

Please enjoy:

and then I might never have seen that

Please enjoy:

—that swan, that sunbeam, that thunderbolt!

Please enjoy:

I might never have heard that entrancing sound, or smelt that bewitching smell!

Please enjoy:

I owe it all to you,

Please enjoy:

my best of friends!" The Rat turned from him in despair.

Please enjoy:

"You see what it is?"

Please enjoy:

he said to the Mole, addressing him across Toad's head:

Please enjoy:

"He's quite hopeless.

Please enjoy:

I give it up—when we get to the town we'll go to the railway station, and with luck we may pick up a train there that'll get us back to riverbank to-night.

Please enjoy:

And if ever you catch me going a-pleasuring with this provoking animal again!"

Please enjoy:

—He snorted, and during the rest of that weary trudge addressed his remarks exclusively to Mole.

Please enjoy:

On reaching the town

Please enjoy:

they went straight to the station

Please enjoy:

and deposited Toad in the second-class waiting-room,

Please enjoy:

giving a porter twopence to keep a strict eye on him.

Please enjoy:

They then left the horse at an inn stable,

Please enjoy:

and gave what directions they could about the cart and its contents.

Please enjoy:

Eventually, a slow train having landed them at a station not very far from Toad Hall,

Please enjoy:

they escorted the spell-bound,

Please enjoy:

sleep-walking Toad to his door,

Please enjoy:

put him inside it,

Please enjoy:

and instructed his housekeeper to feed him,

Please enjoy:

undress him, and put him to bed.

Please enjoy:

Then they got out their boat from the boat-house,

Please enjoy:

sculled down the river home,

Please enjoy:

and at a very late hour

Please enjoy:

sat down to supper in their own

Please enjoy:

cosy riverside parlour,

Please enjoy:

to the Rat's great joy and contentment.

Please enjoy:

The following evening the Mole,

Please enjoy:

who had risen late and taken things very easy all day,

Please enjoy:

was sitting on the bank fishing,

Please enjoy:

when the Rat, who had been looking up his friends and gossiping,

Please enjoy:

came strolling along to find him. "Heard

Please enjoy:

the news?" he said.

Please enjoy:

"There's nothing else being talked about, all along the river bank.

Please enjoy:

Toad went up to Town by an early train this morning.

Please enjoy:

And he has ordered

Please enjoy:

a large and very expensive

Please enjoy:

motor-car." This was
