Speaker:

Okay.

On this episode of Hip Hop Movie Club,

2

:

we explore the 2024 hip-hop parody film,

3

:

A Hip Hop Story. Written,

4

:

directed, and stars Affion Crockett,

5

:

who plays a variety of hip-hop acts from

the beginning of hip-hop history through

6

:

the modern day. And it's just a lot of

laughs in here.

7

:

a big spoof on Russell Simmons throughout.

8

:

as he plays a character Roscoe Simmons,

9

:

his way of speech, his yoga,

10

:

the way he's holding his leg over his

head,

11

:

all that type of stuff. Made me laugh

quite a bit.

12

:

and no one was safe really. There's a lot

of spoofing on a lot of acts,

13

:

especially from like the eighties and

nineties on up.

14

:

So I mean plot line in my opinion,

15

:

it's kind of thin.

16

:

But it was just one of those

17

:

You want to veg out and just

watch a film and get a bunch

18

:

of chuckles out of it? It'd serve its

purpose that way.

19

:

I think in general this does ask good

questions about the state of hip hop

20

:

at at the age fifty. I think Boogie's

right.

21

:

is hip hop not as good as it was in the

early days?

22

:

Why aren't OGs doing it like they were

doing it before?

23

:

But I don't like where the answers landed

so much.

24

:

Like it's like ignoring Kendrick Lamar.

25

:

he wasn't spoofed here at all.

26

:

And and then it was kinda like I I dn I

don't know,

27

:

I agree with the answer he came up with.

28

:

~

And for me the jokes didn't really land

that much.

Maybe he didn't want that maybe he didn't

want that smoke.

29

:

He didn't want that smoke from K Dot.

30

:

Right. I know.

So why do this? Like you you you went

after everyone else.

Well I

31

:

you know, interestingly not it didn't

really go after LL.

32

:

So I don't know. ~ No,

~ LL wasn't featured in it either.

Yeah.

33

:

I think the impressions were funnier than

the jokes,

34

:

and that's like not great for me.

35

:

his Jay is great. No no argument.

36

:

And his Russell Simmons is also great.

37

:

But you know, this as a film, I think it

was this is better off

38

:

as skits and sketches, like a feature

film.

39

:

did not hold for me.

40

:

I I agree. There was some parts where I'm

laughing,

41

:

laughing, but it was even slow at parts,

42

:

and I'm like, okay, what are they trying

to do here?

43

:

Where's the overall message?

44

:

There are parts where I was just like,

45

:

man, like when when when they spoof like

Will Smith as Fresh Prince

46

:

and just the title of he's like parents

just don't give a shit.

47

:

Like that's great, that's great.

48

:

You

Yeah.

49

:

It it's almost like a a pack of Garbage Pail Kids or they came out with those things (yeah) called Wacky Packages and they would spoof

brands like Crest.

50

:

Yeah, yeah. Th that was a level that was

the level. Okay, I get it. Yeah,

I get it. This one doesn't make sense.

something This one okay, this one funny.

Yeah, they're th I don't know, these are these

feel like first draft jokes

51

:

and that was all we got and I don't know.

52

:

It didn't work for me. A couple of things

I was amused,

53

:

but I didn't catch myself laughing at

anything,

54

:

which is not great for a parody film.

55

:

I laughed a bit, ~ but not to the extent

of like a true spoof,

56

:

like

the other spoof movies that we've seen,

57

:

like Don't Sip Juice in South Central,

58

:

you know, like ~ that one was great,

59

:

Yeah, like I was thinking it 'cause I paid

I ended up paying four or five bucks

60

:

to rent this streaming and I'm like,

61

:

man, if I would have went to the theater

and paid the full amount,

62

:

I probably would have been disappointed.

Ha ha

I'm like, Man, if I would have paid ten to

fifteen bucks,

63

:

I'd be like,

Yeah.

Throw

us throw his soda at the screen.

64

:

I can't get jiggy with this

65

:

huh. Yeah.

Ha

ha ha ha. ~

66

:

Ha ha ha.

67

:

Yeah. Here's a one more thing that is on a more

serious note,

68

:

Russell Simmons got in a lot of trouble

for sexual assault allegations.

69

:

And that's not even in here at all.

70

:

And so does parody spoofs kind of let this

off the hook?

71

:

I don't know. I don't know if the answer

to that,

72

:

but ~ it's the elephant in the room.

73

:

And when you pair that with like the way

that women were portrayed in this film,

74

:

like they were all kind of bitchy.

75

:

Or or like out and out, bitchy?

76

:

I don't know. it leaves something to be

desired.

77

:

I wasn't sure why there weren't any

positive women characters that

78

:

I could remember. so yeah. ~ I'm a little

uncomfortable about it. It did portray.

79

:

Yeah, Queen Latifah and MC Lyte were

portrayed as a little bit nasty.

80

:

Yeah, for some reason. I didn't think

about the Ratifah and MC Ryte They got

lazy. Yeah. Queen Ratifa, like w ~

81

:

They're like, let's just change two of the

letters there.

82

:

Let's change two letters like again, first draft jokes. Right.

83

:

E even even Salt-n-Pepa had an attitude

when they had to come over to

84

:

the table and bring the salt and pepper.

85

:

Yeah. Yeah, that she had her period every week,

86

:

like a little misogynistic. Like what are we doing here?

Yeah. That's true.

87

:

this is not jiggy at all.

88

:

go around and rate it, even though we know

some of the ratings here,

Yes. ~

but ~

89

:

Boogie for a hip hop story,

90

:

would you bring this funky flick back or

leave it at the vault?

91

:

It is funny 'cause I I've actually said

this before on other films.

92

:

I'm gonna watch it one more time and I'm

chucking it in the vault Mm. ~

93

:

So in essence you're bringing the funky

flick back for now. Okay.

94

:

Bring that funky flick back with an asterisk.

Okay. You've done that. You've done that one

before.

95

:

Okay. Dyno Wright? Yeah. Shall I even ask? What do you do with this one?

96

:

I'm gonna leave this in the vault. Sorry, Affion.

97

:

I also will leave this one in the vault.

98

:

Did get some laughs, but I'm good.

Yeah.

99

:

I'm good with it.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Thanks for playing the feud.

100

:

Thank you for tuning haha

101

:

Show 'em their parting gifts.

102

:

Shout out to Richard Dawson. Okay.

~

103

:

Thank you for tuning into Hip Hop Movie

Club,

104

:

the show for serious hip-hop fans who want

to deepen their cultural knowledge.

105

:

I'm Dyno Wright, filmmaker, designer,

106

:

longtime hip-hop fan, and I highly

recommend Fab5 Freddy's new memoir,

107

:

Everybody's Fly, A Life of Art,

108

:

Music, and Changing the Culture.

109

:

Especially the audiobook version read by

the man himself.

110

:

Nice. I'm JB, eighties and nineties

nostalgia junkie,

111

:

longtime hip hop fan. And one of my

favorite hip hop spoof skits of

112

:

all time was when Jim Carrey mocked

Vanilla Ice on In Living Color.

113

:

If you haven't seen that, please go watch

that.

Yeah.

114

:

That's a good one. That's a good one.

115

:

And I'm Boogie, a DJ, long-time hip hop

fan.

116

:

And on this date of this recording,

117

:

July 8th, Whodini released their debut

self-titled album.

118

:

Yes.

Classic. Did that one have “Freaks Come Out at Night”?

119

:

On that one, you think?

120

:

I think no no, wait, Freaks Came Out at

night was on back was it the other one,

121

:

the s the one after that. Yeah.

122

:

Gotcha, gotcha, nice. No, Whodini

definitely a pioneer in the game way back

123

:

in the day.

124

:

And remember, don't hate...

125

:

animate!

126

:

So many characters. I love the nervous

laugh of Jay Z that he does

127

:

the nervous laugh, that's so good.

That's good. His Jay is great. It is really good.

Yeah. Yeah.

I can't even do it.

128

:

Yeah.

129

:

Ha ha.

huh.

Yeah, very good.

That's it. ~

~ man.

Yeah. Hey.

Called him JB, like myself. I resemble

that's funny.

Yeah. Oops.

~

130

:

Affion was like ~ he was like Eddie Murphy

or Arsenio Hull,

131

:

like playing like dozens half dozen

characters or more.

Mm-hmm.

132

:

I'm like I'm like, wait, was that is that

really him?

Yeah.

133

:

That's him, yeah. He's doing that part,

134

:

that part. Then you look at the credits,

135

:

it's like Affion, Affion.

136

:

Mm-hmm. Yes.
