Shownotes

There is a voice that tells you that you are not ready, not qualified, not strong enough. It sounds like reason. This episode is for anyone who has mistaken that voice for the truth.

Dr. Danielle Green unpacks where mental barriers actually come from, why they are not character flaws, and what daily practice turns self awareness into real change.

About the Guest:

Dr. Danielle Green is a psychoanalyst who has been in practice for decades, with offices in Los Angeles and Florida. Her work spans meditation, hypnosis, trance states, and dream analysis, and she has led dream retreats around the world for over 30 years.

Key Takeaways:

  • Mental barriers are inherited context, not personal weakness
  • Ask the harder question: who am I when I am not my personality
  • Awareness only counts when everyday behaviour starts aligning with it
  • Daily practice matters more than the type of practice you choose
  • The conscious mind holds a fraction of reality; dreams reach the rest
  • A nightmare usually means something has been asking for attention for a long time

Transcripts

00:00:00 Sayan: There's a voice in your head right now. And maybe it's telling you that you're not really ready. Not qualified enough. Maybe not strong enough for what's ahead. But here's the thing. That voice sounds like reason. It sounds like self Self-Protection, right? But what if that voice is the very thing that's standing between you and the life that you have always wanted, perhaps the life that you're capable of living? Today, we're pulling back the curtain on the mental barriers that we build, the ones that we mistake for truth, and exploring what actually happens when we finally decide to see them for what they really are.

00:00:42 Sayan: Welcome to another episode of Mind Over Matter. I'm your host, Ryan. As most of you would know, and joining me today is Doctor Daniel Green. And we're driving into the invisible walls that we construct in our minds. And I believe this is going to be important for all of you, because we are going to talk about how to dismantle them without actually losing ourselves or creating a new you in the process. So Doctor Daniel, welcome to the show. It's a pleasure to have you along with us today and looking forward to this one.

00:01:13 Dr. Danielle Green: Thank you so much. I'm honored to be here.

00:01:17 Sayan: Thank you so much, Daniel. Likewise. It's my pleasure to have you on the show. So a little disclaimer for all of you who have just tuned in, folks. Some statements may reflect personal beliefs and experiences and are totally presented as individual views and not medical advice. So I recommend all my listeners to please qualify, consult professionals for any kind of medical conditions.

00:01:37 Sayan: So with that being said, uh, Doctor Daniel, I want to, uh, pretty much, um, wide open the conversation with this one that when people really talk about mental barriers, you know, I think they often really frame the frame them as weaknesses or character flaws, right? As if they, they are missing something in the process. So what do you think the biggest misconception about why these barriers exist in the first place? Like, is it something that, uh, we have really picked up from society or is it, is it, uh, you know, is it because we are just comparing ourselves to others all the time? What do you think is happening? And, uh, how should one see the concept of mental barriers altogether?

00:02:23 Dr. Danielle Green: Well, that's a very critical and important question that I think each individual and each examined life has to consider. Let me just underline a couple of things you said. One, we are all built and live born in a context, in a context of a history, of a context of our family. Uh, the context of our community, our cultural values, our religious orientation, all of these layers go into shaping who we believe we are. And some of those things serve us well in terms of certain kinds of success and fulfillment of dreams and goals. And others are beliefs that really limit us. So I think one is to begin to really be aware of what is the unique context of your individual life And what does it mean to assess the real self that is deeper than the cultural conditioning? The family conditioning. The gender conditioning. The sexual identity conditioning. The race conditioning. The religious conditioning. Fundamentally, as a psychoanalyst, I'm always asking people, who are you when you are not your personality? I'm inviting.

00:03:51 Speaker 4: People.

00:03:51 Dr. Danielle Green: To go beyond certain beliefs to see if there is a more soulful access to fulfill your own dharma, your duty, your destiny in this brief life that we have.

00:04:11 Sayan: Right. I think that's really a very beautifully said and articulated doctor. Daniel, thank you so much for that. Um, but here's the, here's the, um, you know, the hardest part, I think in this, in this, um, uh, starting of this new journey to, to actually understand who you really are in the process. But, um, let's take a situation as an, um, let's say you actually self introspect to that level where you realize who you are, what your core values are, what your core beliefs are, and then sort of try to pivot back to that authentic self of you. But again, since we all are really, I think, a byproduct of the society, at least till a point of time, um, how do we actually go about these obstacles that we really face from the society as in, uh, you know, how do we actually face, uh, uh, all this pressure and, uh, sometimes the shame that we might face from, you know, the critics, uh, that, that might say, why are you doing the the way that you are really approaching things. So what's your take on that? And do you believe that when you when you reach that enlightening point in your life, everything just makes sense for itself that it really gets easy for you to ignore all the noise? Or do you think people actually do struggle at that initial point?

00:05:37 Dr. Danielle Green: I think it's a yes and no. I don't think that it's a black and white response. This is a journey we are all on who is not broken in certain ways, who does not at times make mistakes or live with shame, disappointment, frustration, despair, experiences of failure. I think it's an everyday awakening to how we reach for living that authentic life. And it really starts with an awareness of who am I? who am I? Beyond who I think I am, beyond who I am told I am. Can I access something deeper? And in accessing that depth, then I think it springs into what you are asking about, which has to do with.

00:06:34 Speaker 4: Right.

00:06:35 Dr. Danielle Green: Eye access. Once even identified, how can I live it? And I think that's where it's an everyday journey. And I do think there are certain things that people can do to live more authentic, soulful lives and find the strength to often combat that which is bombarding and telling us who we are. That ultimately can be very empty, very superficial, or it can be of substance, but it's not who we are. And so I think there's a way that each day people have to be mindful to rest in an awareness of self. Now, how do we do that? I think there are different practices and whatever practices for each person is critical. So for example, is it meditation? And if so, how does the mind quiet down to access that which is of depth and can guide you? For many people, it's a process of contemplation, a certain kind of study or contemplative living or thinking. For some people, it's waking in the morning and before you turn on any of your devices. We know that looking at the sky, we know that something is simple as attending to our bodies in nature, that we're part of a larger The cosmos is often very useful for some people. It's beginning the day with a prayer. For others, it's beginning with a poem. For some, it's a yoga practice.

00:08:29 Speaker 4: Beautiful.

00:08:30 Dr. Danielle Green: Yes. To build in daily practices that build up the reserve that as we have this introspection, we develop a set of skills that help us go there again and again and again.

00:08:49 Sayan: Beautiful. I think that reframe really changes everything because we are not really fighting against a broken part of ourselves, right? We are kind of negotiating with a system that once kept us safe, uh, but might be over protecting us now as well. So, um, one of the important question that, uh, I think then becomes Doctor Daniel would be once you actually start recognizing those patterns, um, you know, start noticing those patterns within you and as well as around you. Um, I think what I'm trying to understand is what should you actually do with that level of awareness? Is it just, you know, you kind of sit back and observe or is it, is it you convert that awareness into something more energetic, something more, uh, you know, elegant in the process, if that makes sense.

00:09:46 Dr. Danielle Green: Sure. Well, I think it has everything to do within the awareness in accessing. How do you then align everyday behavior with what you now know to be true? Let me just make a couple comments. To me, that is the power of a spiritual practice. And it's also the power of recognizing we are more than the conscious minds. If it's true that the conscious mind can only take in ten to at most twenty percent of reality, we have this vast amount of reality below the surface that we aren't really in touch with, unless there are practices that help us lift the veil that we find is basically limited or an illusion. And then having access that, how do we make life choices in everyday ways, big ways, little ways that align with that larger vision. And that I think is where we move it into action. What do you think? Is that something you found in your life that you have, perhaps in a moment of sudden insight or in a more reflective moment or time in nature where you've discovered something about yourself, but then you have to take it into action and then see what happens as you align the inner world with the outer. Has that happened with you, or an idea that comes to you from your own lived experience?

00:11:30 Sayan: Yes, I think, uh, indeed, uh, you know, there are some moments, uh, and, uh, it's not just one single moment, but I think, uh, places where actually I kind of reset myself and, and I think that that is, that is the awareness that, uh, one needs in their life is what are few things or places, even for some people, right? That, um, helps people actually, uh, more conscious as in they start to really start noticing, um, patterns in themselves first and then, uh, you know, think outside of the box and then start noticing these patterns everywhere around, um, them as well. So I think there's something powerful about not needing to fix, um, yourself immediately. I think just naming it, just seeing it clearly in those moments, uh, that creates this, this gap between stimulus and response. Right? And really in that gap, I think there's a choice that you need to make. Uh, Doctor Daniel. So if someone is ready to take a more active approach to working through any kind of mental barrier, um, perhaps what's a practice or a perspective that you recommend that actually moves the needle?

00:12:45 Dr. Danielle Green: Yes. Well, I think it depends on what a person's inclination is and what they're willing to do. Um, I privately really value meditation because it transcends what we think we know. I absolutely really value hypnosis. understanding trance states, altered states of consciousness. And then, of course, in my training I value the world of the subconscious and the unconscious realms, the world of dreams, the word world of accessing moments of sudden insight that can come in a creative moment or a moment in nature, or in any of the moments of these practices we're talking about. But I think it's about a person's own unique orientation. What are they willing to explore? What are they curious about knowing? For example, I do a lot of work with dream analysis. And when people understand the dream world, really understand it, their own unique symbology, the way that the world is always in a kind of Hieroglyphics and talking to them. These patterns you're describing, those patterns that do scaffold the identity. What is the meaning beneath that? And when people begin to really analyze and understand their dreams and let their dreams speak to them, so much begins to open up. So be it. In hypnotizing people and working in trance states to go beyond conscious knowing, as I've mentioned several times, be it meditation, dream analysis, um, any sort of spiritual practice, it's all about this is the ego level that we need to function through the world. How do I pay the rent? How do I take care of myself and my family? How do we care for this physical vessel of the body that holds consciousness. But then we know through these other practices, our frequencies change. It's what we're learning about through neuroscientists. You know, the physicists tell us that consciousness has its own frequency, that every emotion has its own impact. So what is the frequency of disappointment? What is the frequency of joy? What is the frequency of despair? The frequency of every emotion has its own neurochemistry and its own biological impact that feeds consciousness. And most of that does not take place purely on a cognitive, rational level. It is recognizing I need that, but it's limited. And what am I willing to do to access something much deeper.

00:16:04 Sayan: Wow. I think that's a really, um, surreal mix of both practicality as well as, um, um, spirituality, uh, to some level. And I think this, this, I think this tells me that, uh, and this is something that I also believe is that I think consciousness does indeed transcend through space and time really, um, because, you know, um, I, I have, uh. I mean, I have talked about frequency as in, uh, people vibrating frequency in terms of, uh, different emotions, but I think altogether, uh, it really puts into perspective of how powerful consciousness and the subconscious mind really is. So I think that really tells us a lot about, um, the capability of the human brain. But I'm also fascinated. Doctor Daniel, you mentioned, uh, something about dream analysis. So, um, maybe this is something off topic, but would love to ask you before we actually wrap this off. Uh, what does dreams really tell us about ourselves? Like, is it something that we are experiencing from the other world? Like, is it something that's otherworldly? Because I believe, uh, you know, scientists have been trying to understand the reason why people dream, but, uh, what's your, what's your take on this? Like, uh, what do you see and, and feel that dreams are trying to tell us that we, the conscious mind itself can't.

00:17:34 Dr. Danielle Green: Yes. Well, let me say this, that there are different levels to the dream world. One level is processing what happened in the daylight, what happened during one's conscious ego day to get integrated into the body and the psyche, to help us maintain our mental health equilibrium. So there's one level of processing, but there are so many other levels. Dreams can tell us about the future. I think of all the research that's being done that predicts the future. All the people, myself being one of them, but all the people who had premonitions in the dream world of nine over eleven. In this country, we have so much research about people who dream about a tsunami or an earthquake, or a hurricane, or an impending death of a family member of one who may not be sick in anticipating. So there's a timeless, literally a timeless quality to dreams that we may process past events and we predict the future. And we all know that so much is possible in the dream world, serving as warnings to protect us. So truly the.

00:18:58 Speaker 4: Wow.

00:18:58 Dr. Danielle Green: Wow is vast and exciting, and I've been leading groups around the world with various dream retreats, uh, for, well, for over thirty years. And what people grow to know about their ancestors and how we hold all of that in the psyche. And it shows itself in dreams to how to guide us to live that deep self. And what is ours to do to complete our our life meaning and purpose.

00:19:31 Speaker 4: Wow.

00:19:31 Sayan: I mean, that's fascinating for sure. Um, because, uh, that's something new to me. And I think, uh, that, that actually makes a lot more sense to me because, uh, I've heard people talking about, uh, dreams representing, you know, events that have happened in the past or, you know, the future part that you said. And I think it just, it just makes sense to me. And, and I think this is fascinating. I think this, this really, uh, tells us that there's something more than just the conscious part of the brain. So I would like to keep to that and let the listeners perhaps dive deeper into this topic. But for any of the listeners, Doctor Daniel, who actually resonated and wants to connect with you and follow your work, especially, uh, with, um, the stuff that you have spoken about dream analysis. Where can people actually connect with you or continue this conversation with you?

00:20:23 Dr. Danielle Green: Sure. Uh, my website, the green practice, um, I have offices in Los Angeles and also in Florida, and my website tells a little bit about my work and I'll soon be posting on my website the various retreats that I hold around the world. Often I haven't posted them because by word of mouth they've always gotten full. But I hope to be able to accommodate more people now. And so I'm going to start posting on my website. So listeners are interested in learning altered states of consciousness during intensives for Healing the Dream World. Anything beyond the ego world which we need again to function through the world. But once we travel beyond that, um, I would hope they would, uh, check out the website and come and join us. We're a wonderful group of, of seekers and expanding our lives in beautiful ways.

00:21:19 Sayan: Beautiful. I, I really love that explorer energy doctor Daniel. So, uh, we'll make sure that the links are in the show notes actually, so more people can, uh, actually help build and shape the community that you have built. So folks, uh, with that, we unfortunately come to the minute mark of this conversation. But honestly, I mean, there's a lot that you need to, or you may need to dig deeper into the subconscious world of things. So thanks for being here. Thanks for listening. I think real change really does not announce itself with any kind of big announcement or like fireworks. I think it really shows up in very small, very discrete moments when you choose to question that voice that says that you can't, or perhaps when you pause instead of react. So maybe, um, take that one small step today because you don't have to, you know, have it all figured out just now, just today. You just have to be willing to start. I think that's where resilience builds from. That's you. And that's what we are here for. This has been on the mind over matter, folks. I'll see you next time. And, uh, pretty much till then, take care folks. Signing off for today.
