a poem by Michel-Vincent Corbeaux
Speaker:
00:00:49
A farming deer, at rest from sowing seed,
Speaker:
00:00:52
Was visited by merchant wolves displaying
Speaker:
00:00:54
“Our finest prize - this hen - its gilded laying;
Speaker:
00:00:57
“Such wealth from these will satisfy your need!”
Speaker:
00:01:00
They demonstrated truth in word and deed, And so, the deer would sell his farm for paying
Speaker:
00:01:05
Of easy treasure, and instead of staying In diligence, he fast succumbed to greed.
Speaker:
00:01:10
But then at night a vixen thief was prying
Speaker:
00:01:12
And made her way into his home to see
Speaker:
00:01:15
The hen, that soon her feast it was to be.
Speaker:
00:01:18
So as she sprang upon the hen now dying,
Speaker:
00:01:20
The deer returned to cries that ruined glee;
Speaker:
00:01:23
Here all his hope of health and wealth did flee.
Speaker:
00:01:26
It caused the fox to state a truth, replying “‘Tis
Speaker:
00:01:29
always best to struggle truly free,
Speaker:
00:01:31
“Than bound and shackled to prosperity.
Speaker:
00:01:36
prosperity.” This was “Agricola & Avarice” by Michel-Vincent Corbeaux,
