He has been interested in mind-body interactions since he was a child and began meditating over 40 years ago. He received his B.S in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology and his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine. His medical specialty is psychiatry and he has maintained a solo private practice for over 20 years in Eugene, OR, focusing on treating stress-related conditions.
