Shownotes
Have you ever had your symptoms dismissed by your doctor? Been told you were “making things up” in a medical setting? Not had your physical pain taken seriously? These are all forms of medical gaslighting. Due to an intense history of exclusion or abuse within medical spaces and studies, women, especially marginalized women, experience higher rates of medical gaslighting than cisgender heterosexual white men.
This week on the podcast, Shaunna and Lisa talk to Dr. Karen Lutfey Spencer to discuss the concept of medical gaslighting and how it disproportionally affects marginalized populations. Further, they brainstorm ways to recognize medical gaslighting in the moment and to advocate for themselves. Dr. Spencer is a medical sociologist and Professor of Health and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Colorado Denver. She researches medical decision-making, health disparities, and patient-provider relationships, including medical gaslighting.
