With that, let's get into our episode this week.

To kick off Hidden Gems Part 2, we're starting off with Stardust.

Speaking of what a time.

And then it was written by Jane Goldman, Matthew Vaughn and Neil Gaiman.

It was directed by Matthew Vaughn.

It stars Charlie Cox, Claire Danes, sienna Miller, Ian McKellen, Bimbo Hart, Alistair McIntosh, Ben Barnes, David Kelly, Kate McGowan, Melanie Hill and Nathaniel Parker.

It also had Henry Cavill in it, Peter o'.

Toole.

Like the list goes on and on.

Yeah, right.

Seriously, like so many people in this movie, it still blows my mind that this movie was as quiet as it was when it came out to this stuff.

Anyway, it's about a.

In a countryside town bordering on a magical land, a young man makes promise to his beloved that he'll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm.

I mean it's accurate, but it's very broad.

Yeah.

But anywho, I. Yeah.

So this was Alex movie my pick.

I'm gonna let him talk about why he picked this and then that cast.

List, the big part.

But so I saw this fairly recently after it did come out.

So I've had the DVD of this for.

It was one of the first DVDs I ever purchased.

And it, it is a very quiet movie.

It's a sleeper for me.

Yeah.

Because it isn't really talked about hardly ever.

Even though you have some really standout performances in it.

And the story is the weakest part.

And it's.

It's not necessarily that it's based off of like Neil Gaiman's story.

No Gaiman story.

It's more of.

You tried to cram too much into a two hour movie.

And so you have a very surface level kind of movie at the end of the day.

Yeah.

Or you.

You left wanting more, but there's no more to consume, so to speak.

And so I actually looked up when I was watching it through this time to see because I had the same question like why is.

Was this such a sleeper?

Yep.

Pirates of the Caribbean at World's end I'm like oh okay.

Yeah, makes sense.

Like it was going up against some huge blockbusters, some huge franchises at the time.

Time.

And so this was sleep pick.

But I mean you have Robert Dairo in this as freaking space Pirate, ballerina.

And it is fantastic.

And then Charlie Cox, Right.

This is one of his first roles.

Now he's daredevil himself.

It's wild, right.

It's.

Watching it back through, you're looking and it's.

The cast list is stacked by today's standards, but you kind of go back 17 years, 18, 19 years at this point.

Holy crazy, dude.

And there it's just a bunch of like fresh faces.

Yeah.

Going through.

With the exception of, you know, Robert.

De Niro and Pfeiffer.

Tool Pfeiffer.

There's a handful of them, but it's just.

For me, it's like this hidden sleeper movie because it is an enjoyable watch for me that I'm going through.

I enjoy it.

I get a kick out of it.

There's some great lines in it.

There's so.

And the real problem at the end of the day is that there's just so much happening.

Yeah.

That you don't get very deep onto some of the really cool stuff.

Like, I would love to see more of Mark Strong's character.

Oh, yeah, a lot more.

But we.

You get like a couple really cool moments and that's all you get of him.

Which is.

Yeah,.

Man.

And so I think this is made now.

You get a ten part miniseries.

Sure.

Or you get a trilogy of films.

Yeah.

But I don't know.

What about you, jj?

So it was really funny when you sent me the list.

Like, because anybody knows us, Alec has taken over the lists and the voting and all that fun stuff.

So I send him movies.

So when I finally saw the full list, I was like, get the fuck out.

Because I almost picked Stardust.

No way.

No shit.

So I've been so mad.

I know, right?

I almost picked it because this is one of those films.

But this is a movie that I forget about all the time and I. I didn't see it in the theater.

Like, I remember seeing like previews for it back in 07 and going.

I don't have time.

Yeah, I'll just watch it some other time.

Because I also, and I think I've talked about on this podcast, like, I have a.

Have had a thing for Michelle Pfeiffer since I was a kid.

Like her as Catwoman.

The.

Out of here.

Like, that's.

I was a child at the time and I was like, whoa, I love Michelle Pfeiffer.

And so Michelle Pfeiffer being in this movie, which ironically I left out two of the big stars in the cast because that's how big this cast list is that they were.

They're not even like the list.

They're like not even booked on IMDb is the crazy part.

Yeah, it's nutty.

So it's like one of those movies.

But as soon as I saw a previous, like, oh, Michelle Pfeiffer.

But then I'm like, okay, Pirates, Spider man, like, I just, I had to go, I went and saw other things and then this was on like HBO or some.

When it was hbo, right?

Like, and it was on that rotation and it, it was one of the filler movies.

And I can't even remember, we used to put movies on HBO on and do housework and like that.

And I was like, I remember wanting to see this movie, right?

And so I sat down and watched it and I was like, done.

And I'm like, I'm ashamed.

I love this movie.

And then I probably went on like a two week binge where I watched this like almost every day for two weeks.

Because it's just fun, right?

And it is, to your point, there is no depth to this movie whatsoever.

None.

Like, it's unfortunate because it's a.

It could be so cool.

Oh yeah, And I'm with you.

I would love to see someone pick it up and do an HBO series or Netflix series or you know, an Amazon series.

Like, let someone that's willing to go to the darker places too.

Because if, you know, Neil Gaiman, diamond, whatever, this dude doesn't do happy go lucky.

No much at all.

I mean, there's some happy, you know, really fun romantic moments, but there's dark that you don't and you get glimpses of it.

But without the depth that we're talking about, you can't get into the actual dark stuff.

And I did go and read and get into this.

After I saw the movie, I was like.

Because that's what I tend to do.

I love movies with obviously fucking six years later, almost seven.

Working on seven years later.

It's.

But I'm always intrigued when I see something that's based off of literature that I want to read the literature because I want to see the comparison.

I want to see the different.

There's always different viewpoints that you can't get in a movie or a tv TV show.

So anyway, I checked it all out and there's some dark in this Fairy tale, if you will.

But, yeah, I love this movie.

So I was tickled.

I was like, actually, I win all around in this because it's.4 out of the five movies were on my list.

Yeah, There you go.

Ultimate winner.

Yeah.

It was amazing.

So I was like, okay.

Okay, I'm down.

So when it.

Yeah, when it popped, I was like, yes, I'm gonna go watch Stardust again.

And it was fun.

It is fun.

And it's just that, like, I was saying, like, Mark Strong is a huge, huge part where I am always wanting more, even though it's really not his story.

Yeah.

Because, like, one of our first kind of glimpses of just how insane this dude is is when he's, you know, talking to the soothsayer with the runes.

Oh.

And just, you know, throw them higher, you know?

And I'm gonna ask, are you.

Do you work for my brother?

Type of a thing.

It's just.

You can see it in the actor's face.

Like, ah.

Yep.

As it comes down, you know, just.

He's so quick with the knife, too.

Just.

Everybody stabs, like, six people in this.

And it always just.

No second thought, no question about it, Just, bam, you're done, and move on.

Yeah.

And that is, like.

That's the intriguing.

One of the intriguing parts for me is that kind of whole storyline, because it's like, the Kings of Stormhold, you don't get chosen because you're the firstborn.

You get chosen because you're the last one living.

Yep.

Yep.

Like, that's how they do things.

You kill everybody.

Mm.

And so, like, an added bonus part is the.

Every time we get to see the dead brothers that are just in ghost form.

And this is the part that, like, though those moments is what really made it, you know, because I first saw this when I was, like, 14, 15.

Yeah.

That's what got me with the humor and the comedy is like.

Because the first time we actually get to see him, it's like, oh, well, you know, you're not still mad about that whole murder thing, right?

You know, I killed you 10 years ago.

And it's just so funny because, like.

Oh, yeah, no, it got a point.

Because now you're king, right?

And it's all good.

Oh, wait, no, no.

You're dead.

And so it's like you have a very dark moment before because it gets tossed out a window, and then all of a sudden, you're laughing and joking about it.

So it's just this humor and comedy that's almost perfect for that young adult Age.

Yeah.

Where it's.

It's dark, but it's still funny because of the way it's presented to the audience.

And so it's just.

I wanted more of that because Mark Strachan does such a great job as this psychopath.

And that's the best way to put it.

Absolutely.

Psychopath.

Just having a blast.

And.

Yeah.

Enjoying the fact that he's on this quest to essentially kill his brothers.

Yeah.

Just because, I mean, you see him, he's the only one that apparently that kills people.

Yeah.

And so that.

That's just.

And that's just part of it.

And I think he has like 10 minutes of screen time.

Yeah.

Not much.

Not enough, that's for sure.

And it's just like, I want more.

And more and more.

But you go through.

And the movie is so shallow because it's trying to hit everything that you're almost like, well, what could you cut?

Yeah.

And there's a handful of, you know, small little seconds that you could get out of it.

But because it's moving so quick and it's not going in the deep dive, there's no real place you could take off and keep enough of the story so that you can understand what's going on.

Yeah.

And that is really my only gripe with this movie is that.

Sure, It's.

It's like 2 hours, 15 minutes or something like that.

It's not even that.

I think it's an hour and 45 runtime.

45.

So.

And it is rushed.

It feels like they are hustling to get through it all, especially nearing the end.

Oh, yeah.

From the time you meet Shakespeare, such.

So good.

Great, great part of the movie is.

Is just.

It's going.

It's going quick and you've got to keep up.

And it's boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.

And so it's.

It's.

That's the only gripe I have with.

Other than that, I really enjoy watching this movie.

It's got good music, it's got a great cast, and it's just like, I wanna.

I wanna know more.

Yep.

Well.

And it's really well acted, like, because of the cast and even.

But even the young cast.

Right.

Like, it's funny because you talk about Mark Strong and everybody knows Mark Strong now.

Like, you show a picture of Mark Strong's face, you're like, I know him.

Yeah, I know him.

Dude.

If you weren't in England, you didn't.

Weren't British, you know, Mark Strong was no, Claire Danes was just barely getting back on her acting feet.

Like, she hadn't done the TV show on Showtime yet at this point.

Like, she was off of that MTV that we talked about, the My so Called Life or whatever.

And then she had like the, you know, she had the.

Speaking of Shakespeare, she had the Romeo and Juliet thing.

And then, like, she kind of fell off for a minute and then she.

But she's great because I think she's such an underrated actress.

She got a lot of kudos with the Showtime show that I can't think of the name of.

But anyway.

But outside of De Niro and Pfeiffer, I mean, you had some big names, but they were either old hat that people were like, oh, I love seeing them.

Right?

Or you had people that were young and up and coming, like Charlie Cox.

And, you know, it's just like.

And I remember watching, like, when they started doing.

When Netflix started doing previews for Daredevil, and I had that.

I had my.

My Whistler in the chair.

Like, the moment with.

What's his face Like.

I saw him like, fuck, that's the Stardust.

And he's like, stardust?

Are you talking about that stupid fairy tale movie?

Because I watched this.

I remember watching it.

I was like, casey, you gotta watch Stardust with me.

What the am I watching?

Like,.

I just keep adding the list of movies that Casey hates me for.

It was great.

It was great because, like, this was way back.

So we were.

In fact, I remember watching this with her.

So years later, first time I ever watched it.

And we.

And I was like, you got.

I just watched this movie last night while I was doing stuff in the house.

You got to watch it with me.

And she's like, this sucks.

So she hates it.

But, like, I love it.

And I.

It's because it's so.

It's a Javier movie is what I call them.

They're like skeeter movies.

Like that water Skeeter level that you don't have to think about it.

You just sit and go, oh, they're on a lost buckling space.

Yeah.

Like this adventure that means they're out to kill wicked witches and evil king wannabes.

And, like, it's just like, there's no depth at all to it.

And I'm with you.

It bothers me because I love the universe that it's set in and I love the actors and the actresses that are in it.

And it's such an interesting world that's been built.

And thank God that you can go read more into it and get depth, because it's.

There's a lot there, but the movie does it no justice.

But it's still entertaining as.

And I just am like.

And it's.

It's another thing, too, where I'm like, what is Robert De Niro doing?

But this is amazing.

So I love it.

And I don't know if this is true or not, because I heard it kind of through the grapevine that De Niro turned down Jack Sparrow or he was up for it in some way to perform and kind of said, like, nobody wants to see a pirate movie.

And we kind of talked about this last month that.

For so long until pirates changed.

And so then pirates goes off.

And so he took this Shakespeare role specifically because it was a pirate.

And then he just had fun because, like, this is.

This is Robert De Niro.

This is casino.

This is.

Yes.

Like goodfellas.

This is Robert De Niro, right?

Like, this dude is Mafia boss, mob whacking people.

And he's.

He's in his ship cabin painting a little heart dude.

It's the greatest ever.

Sashade in front.

And then just when Mark Strong comes in, he's like, what is going on?

Right?

Because there's this reputation that is so important, and De Niro's just stomping out, like, what are you doing?

It's amazing.

Like, I just start gackling because it's so funny.

It's.

It's never in a million years where you would expect Robert De Niro to be nowhere close.

And he is so good at it.

Oh, just having fun.

Out.

Out of.

And it.

You know, say he's been typecast for the last 80 years, and he kind of has been.

But at the same time, like, dude's got range for sure.

I.

Outrageous.

Outrageous range.

Yeah.

And so this is so funny.

Or I. I enjoy his performance in this because it is not Robert De Niro or it's not what you expect of Robert De Niro in a movie.

You expect him to, you know, break some fingers off a guy in a cornfield.

That kind of stuff.

Yeah.

He's just, tell me all about my beloved England.

And you're like, it's great.

And it's so good going back to it, because if you, like, if this is your first introduction to Robert De Niro, Right.

It's a little bit different.

But if.

If it's not, and you're Watching him through.

You're going back to it after seeing them in the.

In his typical role.

Yeah, that much better.

Because it's, it's such a shocking.

Like your brain's going, this is wrong.

Yeah.

But it feels right of a shock and it's just so good.

And so I say, the only thing I don't like is a shallowness.

But I also wish that we would have gotten Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro on screen.

Oh, like, would have been amazing.

Like have him show up at the end or something with this crew.

Like just.

Just something.

Because it would be such a great moment.

So it was Barbosa that he turned down Barbosa.

Okay.

Yep.

He turned down Barbosa.

So he took this role out of regret for turning down Barbosa.

Okay.

Yep.

And then they only let Matthew Vaughn.

So I was just reading some trivia, if you couldn't tell.

They only let Matthew Vaughn cast Charlie Cox as Tristan after they got De Niro and Pfeiffer and McKellen.

So they got their big names, they.

Got Monsters and went, okay, you can have Charlie Cox.

Because the other person that was up for it, thank God he didn't get it.

Do you know?

No.

Will himself.

Oh, good Lord.

Yeah.

Well, they.

Orlando Bloom is who they originally wanted.

The studios wanted to play Tristan and Matthew Vaughn was like, no, he just came off of the Lord of the.

Rings, Kingdom of Heaven at this point.

Yeah.

Like, they're like, no, Matthew Phone's like, no, I don't want him.

And so he.

But he.

And he wanted Cox and.

But they.

All the studio wouldn't.

Paramount wouldn't let him do it until he cast those three.

And then they were like, okay, now you can have him because we have our monsters.

Yeah.

You have your big names that are going to bring it in.

Yeah, I do.

On this.

On this.

Watch through.

I was kind of.

I was going through it again.

It's like, man, I wonder what Ben Barnes would have done.

Oh.

As Tristan.

Because it's.

It's hard, right, to take Charlie Cox where he is now with Daredevil and everything and go back to awkward, just quirky type and make the connection.

And so it's weird.

Yeah.

And so I was.

I was watching seeing Ben Barnes play as well.

I was like, I think he would have been great in this.

So I would enjoyed seeing him play this role of Tristan.

Yeah.

A little bit more than Charlie Cox, even though Charlie Cox did a great job.

Absolutely.

And funny that you say that, because there was a lot of debate between originally, when they decided not to go with Orlando Bloom, they.

It was between Ben Barnes and Charlie Cox.

And the studio, again, wanted Ben Barnes to be Tristan because he was better looking.

Yeah.

Well, I mean, Ben Barnes, pretty.

Don't get me wrong.

He's a very pretty man.

And.

But I'm with you.

Like, I actually.

And I love Charlie Cox.

Don't get me wrong.

I think he's a fantastic actor.

I think he's great in Daredevil.

But I think Ben Barnes is one of the most underrated actors right now.

Like, yeah.

And again, we go back to Marvel, but if you go back, if you go watch the Punisher and his character in the two first two seasons of the Punisher, that, oh, my God, he's so good.

And then he's.

He was in a Netflix series that the series itself wasn't great, but it was based off a really good set of books.

And he stole every scene he was in in that movie and played the character that he played the bad guy.

Ish.

And he becomes the bad guy.

But at first you're like, is he the bad guy?

But he's so good.

I love Ben Barnes.

I think he would have made a better Tristan.

And.

But again, that's nothing against Charlie Cox because he's great at it too.

But he's just a next level actor.

Yeah.

Just watch his performance as Tristan's dad, the younger version.

Like, just.

You're cackling the whole, like 180.

He pulls on the guard and the argument.

It's a field.

Like, he has.

He has four lines of dial dialogue.

Yeah.

And it's.

It's just so, so great.

Like, I. I would love to see Ben Barnes as a Bond villain.

Oh, I think he'd be phenomenal in that role, Especially now as he's gotten older and he's kind of gotten.

Or played those more sophisticated type roles, or he'd be so good in a ton of things.

And so that's the other thing that I caught on this watch you.

I was walking through, I was like, man, I wonder what Ben Barnes would have done as Tristan.

Yeah.

Because even though Charlie Cox does a great job, like, Tristan isn't my favorite character in this or even one that I necessarily care about the most or in any way, shape or form.

Yeah.

Like, it's.

It's rough, but he's overshadowed whenever Claire Danes is there.

Yep.

She does a lot better.

Oh, yeah.

Even when she's not around.

He's, you know, poor guys, like, got Robert Dairo or he's got Mar Strong or he's got Michelle.

Like, I feel bad for him because he doesn't really have a lot of places where he can truly shine.

Yeah.

And, like, even.

Even at this time, he wasn't super well known.

Like, he's got to share the screen with Henry Cavill.

And so, like, I'm glad that he's.

He kind of found his footing because I love him in Daredevil.

Oh, yeah.

Nominal.

But, like, watching this show, I was like, ooh.

It's almost like, okay, so how.

How did he persevere through kind of this stage of his life to get to where he was so good in Daredevil?

Because he's one of my least favorite characters.

And it's not necessarily his performance so much.

It's, like, who he has to share the screen with, compete with.

And they just.

They're just heads and shoulders above where they could be.

And so, I mean, it kind of fits in the story where you've got, you know, Tristan's this kind of loser, not confident in himself, and, you know, takes the hero's journey and comes a Billy Badass.

Yeah.

Which.

Which fits real nice.

But, yeah, it's like.

Like, poor guy.

He goes from, like.

Because there's one sequence where he goes from Mark Strong to Michelle Pfeiffer and then Kate McGowan.

Yeah.

Talk about a ring of active, like, acting partners.

Like, Jesus Christ.

In, like, five minutes.

That's brutal.

And then when it's all said and done, he's got to go back to Claire Danes and Robert De Niro.

You're like, God, this poor bastard.

So he had a rough show of it.

Yeah.

But, I mean, I.

It's hard to pick out singular things to really talk about with this movie because it's one of those where it's as dumb as it sounds.

It's a movie as a whole.

That makes it really good, even though it's shallow as.

Yeah.

And I.

But I think it's because it's shallow as.

Right.

Like, because if you look at scenes, you're like, what the am I watching?

Like, there's no.

There's no underlying context that you can allude to from a scene alone.

Like, you have to have the whole of the movie because it takes you that long to actually go, okay, get what they're doing.

And these characters are fun across the board.

Right.

Like, they're interesting, they're fun, but I don't know why, other than they work together to make this very interestingly funny and.

And goofy and yet serious.

And dark movie that pieces don't work.

Like, it has to be the whole.

I complete.

I was just gonna say that you stole the line because I was gonna say if you don't watch this movie as a whole, we talk a lot about movies that you can go watch scenes on YouTube and be like, this ain't it.

Like, you can't.

If you go watch the scene with freaking Robert Dairo doing his ballet, like, you're like, what the.

Yeah, but if you watch this whole movie, you go, okay, that's epic right there.

Right?

Like, it.

It's a weird conundrum of a movie, which I think is what makes it so fun and so good.

And why it's on this list.

And we're talking about it during Hidden.

Yeah, because it's a.

It's.

It's really hard because there's no place where you can really go and pull out.

Like, you should watch this because the, the scene at the end.

Right.

The whole sequence at the end, that's weird.

If you just pull it out and you're kind of going, wait, the goat turned into, you know, Arthur Weasley.

You're like, like, wait a minute.

Or, or you pull out the.

A scene a little bit later where it's like they're doing what with the lightning?

And then you could, you could go a little bit further and you could be like, you know, wait, that's the comedian.

What's Ricky doing?

You know, making weird animal monkey sounds.

And like, if you pull it apart in scenes, it is.

It is the worst episode of SNL that ever has ever existed.

Yeah, but if.

One exception though, when you're done.

Go ahead.

Yeah, but.

But if you watch it all together, it all makes sense.

And it's all surprisingly like you got this dark overtone going through absolute trash.

Like if you look at it under a microscope.

Yeah.

There's one Z.

If you have.

Okay, you see, you brought up Ricky Gervais again.

If you haven't seen this movie and you don't care to watch it, that's fine.
