Cedric: Buddy Valastro, you are on The Collect call on the Collective Whisper podcast.
Buddy Valastro: Hey, how you doing,
Cedric: Do you agree to a Collect call from Simon K?
Buddy Valastro: Okay,
Simon K: Hi, Buddy. Lovely to meet you
Buddy Valastro: How you doing, Simon?
Simon K: Great to talk to you in person.
Buddy Valastro: Oh, pleasure's all mine, man.
Simon K: Lovely. And it's really exciting this fantastic new show, Buddy's Holiday Recipe Rumble.
So on behalf of my podcast, we wanted to wish you the best of luck with that. It's great to talk to you a little bit just to find out about the show. And, people who are in the baking world and the cooking world are very curious about these kinds of things.
She bakes lovely, fantastic [:Buddy Valastro: I appreciate that. Thank you, Simon
And yeah, I'm very excited about this new show.
[:Buddy Valastro: Because, nothing brings families together like food or the holidays. And we basically bring families in and let them create their holiday traditions. So like, in my house, one of the things we do is the Feast of the Seven Fishes.
So one of the competitions or one of the shows was The Feast of the Seven Fishes. Then we had a Noche Buena Feast. So we had, which was pretty cool because we had, and I never knew this, but they celebrate Noche Buena in the Philippines as well and all over Latin America and Spain. So we had a Mexican family and we had a Filipino family.
It seemed like the flavors and traditions and the same idea and holiday, but how they use different flavors and recipes, was amazing.
Or new year's noodles, we had one that was like new year's noodles traditions like that
[:Simon K: Yeah, and it's interesting because i'm from Ireland, but i've been living in spain for 10 or 11 years [00:02:00] and it's different in europe as opposed to latin america, but they do have some traditions around christmas as well Noche Buena,I think they celebrate obviously we don't in this house, It's quite interesting to have those different cultures on the show, the Latin America, the Jewish, lots of different things.
So that's quite a nice touch, and it will appeal more to different families of different cultures, won't it?
Buddy Valastro: And I was so intrigued to see what people do, because again I don't want to sound ignorant, but really all they know is what I do at my own house, right? You know what I'm trying to say?
So the traditions of what my mom, dad, grandparents did, my wife's grandparents, that's what we see. Being able to see it and, look, it's still Christmas Eve, right? Everybody celebrates Christmas Eve. We might call it Noche Buena. We might call it, Christmas Eve. But traditions and families celebrate all over the world and they're bringing their A game from a culinary standpoint.
ance. It's things they don't [:So there's an interesting family dynamic in it as well.
Simon K: Yes.
[:Simon K: And when they say in show business, don't work with children or animals, maybe they can add, don't work with families because I'm sure you've had some moments where, families kill each other.
Buddy Valastro: Yeah. No, I know that firsthand.
Well, Look, dude, if I had to give you my synopsis on that I think that there's good and bad. We're working with family, right? Like the thing is like my family. Sometimes they'll take business personal, because they've been in this business for so long and everything else. But when it comes down to working hard, Or having to be there or doing more.
down, that's who you go to. [:Simon K: Yes.
[:Simon K: For you, during the filming of the series, What was the most surprising or touching moment you experienced?
Buddy Valastro: Oh man, there was so much joy. And so much respect for people had for their parents or their moms.
Or their dads. And just You know, remembering family, remembering traditions there was a lot of heart there, right? And I think that's something that we need to see in the world more.
Simon K: Yeah, that's true, isn't it?
[:Simon K: And, I think when you visit different countries, you see how food brings families together, whether it's Spain, Italy, France, the United States.
Food is a great kind of, object. It's a great thing that kind of you have soulful food, families get together over and especially at times in like Christmas and, these festive seasons, food is an amazing thing and there's no better food than cakes.
Buddy Valastro: Hey man. We have cake and we're doing real food.
blessed that being the cake [:The most important thing people is family.
Simon K: Yes.
Buddy Valastro: No matter where you're from in the globe. And sometimes we forget that, or we just don't understand it, or we don't see it. And these traditions of food, and culture, and family, no matter where I've been around the world, you see how important it is.
And this show is just really like a showcase to show that from all over the world.
Simon K: Okay.
[:Simon K: Between your Cake toppers, Cookie, cupcake, cake, you're doing a lot of projects. How do you manage your time? Do you Have a lot of people managing your time, or are you sitting in front of, a planner every evening?
It's a lot of projects, isn't it?
ut I love creating shows and [:But after it did, television became so much more important to me. Me making cakes on Cake Boss was just me being me, right? Yeah. , this is how I lived my life, and Now when I create television, I want to create television that's going to share that same, recipe or that same mantra where I still am at my factory every day if I'm off filming. And I'm on the line this morning, 5am, I was setting up machinery I had an accident with one of my fillers, and I got cherry [00:07:00] filling, I got cherry filling all over me.
Simon K: Oh no.
Buddy Valastro: It's funny, I'm, after all these years, I'm still in it.
That's
Simon K: a real workplace disaster, having cherry filling all over you.
And as I mentioned, my wife bakes cakes and things, and I'll give her a shout out Pretty penny cakes. She bakes lovely and, I remember we used to sit down watching Cake boss, me and my kids and my wife.
Buddy Valastro: love it.
Simon K: It was a fantastic show and it really launched you and everything. And I know, I see my wife when she's baking and I always say to her. There's so much work goes into these cakes that the people don't see, when you're baking artisanal cakes or the, all the little touches, the icing, all these things.
They're like works of art, but then, and people love them, but they're gone so quickly then, aren't they?
ving other people, like your [:'cause people just say, oh wow, look at this cake. How did it get there? They don't know that you've been working on it for three days or, whatever the difference may be. So was always good to be able to , give bakers the respect. And I've had a lot of bakers come to me and be like, thank you for your show.
People respect what we do so much more now.
Simon K: Yes, that's fantastic.
[:Simon K: And what advice would you give to families who want to create their own holiday recipe tradition? Whether it's grandmas, apple tart or Christmas cake,
Buddy Valastro: It's not like you only, being from Italian heritage, I only have to cook Italian. You know what I'm trying to say if I want to make miso cod on Christmas, I can.
s traditions in your family, [:I think it's really important to cook with family, start those traditions and just pass them down generation to generation. There's a sense of satisfaction, and you'll totally get this, Simon, because of your wife. You probably look at your wife and say, you're freaking crazy, man, you're working days and killing yourself on these cakes and what you're doing and the attention to detail.
one taste something that you [:Simon K: Perfect.
[:
Simon K: I'd like to commend you and your brilliant work and let us know give us some details about the show when it's coming out you know what channels and so on so
