David mentors youths through The Forge, an organisation he runs that focuses on youth mentorship programs, one-on-one counseling, and bootcamps to help youths struggling with identity crisis from father wounds, dealing with addictions, and finding their purpose in life. The Forge's focus spans spiritual, mental, career, and physical wellness.

For those listening, what part of the world are you in today?

I am in Lusaka, Zambia.

This is my country of birth.

Born and raised here for the last 36 years.

Whoa.

How did you come to meet Jesus?

I got to meet Jesus when just before I turned 15.

It was my last grade of high school.

And so a couple of friends we used to have this little clique in the neighborhood.

So they're guys we used to party and have fun with and do crazy things in the neighborhood.

So two of my friends got saved first.

I wasn't around.

I think we met like a week later.

They told me about their experience.

Of course, I wasn't very intrigued, but this one particular friend of mine continued coming to hang out with me even though I remained in the world.

So when I'd go drinking, he would come.

He would never drink, but he would just be around me because we're like really good friends.

So along the way, I started slowly.

It was such so mysterious.

I started losing the passion for that kind of life.

And so one time we're taking a walk in the neighborhood.

We just went to see some old club that we used to go to.

And then someone preached to us the gospel.

We met some random, very random guys that are preaching to us.

And for the first time, I was very interested in this man called Jesus.

And so on our way back, my friend was like, why don't you come with me to church tomorrow?

I was like, OK, cool.

So I went back home.

I went to church the following Sunday and I had an encounter that changed my life.

It's immediately like it was an amazing encounter.

I was led to the Lord in the same meeting I got through to the Holy Spirit.

And that was the beginning of my transformation.

Wow.

Were your parents Christians?

So I was raised by a single mom.

She was a Christian.

So we used to go to church, but more of the traditional church is here.

So she used to drag me to church, you know, just drag me to church.

So she was from a religious perspective.

But then after my conversion, because I went and visited another church along the way, after hearing the message of the Christ in a charismatic church, I remember one time I went back home and I preached the gospel to her and she never changed immediately.

But when I got ordained as a pastor at the age of 21, about two years later, she joined the church where I was.

And until she went to meet the Lord, we used to pray and worship together.

I've found that when I'm having conversations with Jesus believers, that the initial acceptance of Christ and what surrounded the persuasion or the conversion has evidence of what you end up doing for the rest of your life.

Would you agree when you look at the model of simply someone walking on the side of you without pressuring you or forcing you to Christianity, that that model is something that you've actually now actually walked in?

Um, you mean the model of not pressuring people like to convert people like to preach to them?

Well, let's look at what happened with your friend, right?

So here's your friend walking beside you, even though you're drinking, right?

And he's still there, but he's standing as a Christian, not doing exactly what you're doing.

And then secondly, with your mother, where you're on, I would imagine you're on fire.

You become a ordained pastor at 21.

And then she comes to Christian.

Well, she comes across to the church that you're going to as well.

So have you seen that that model of, of walk is something that has been most powerful or something that your ministry is built upon?

Yes.

Um, so I have been on both sides of, you know, after when, when, when, um, when I, when I got saved and was on fire would do all these evangelism walks.

And even at my university, I used to do a lot of preaching on campus and, you know, try to get people to church, which I think there's nothing wrong with it.

But I think, um, it's more impactful when people get to see your walk with Christ and they get to see you transformed.

That's a greater message than any message you could preach with just your mouth alone.

So instead of trying to, to, to, to like drag people into the faith, um, it, it, it is more effective if people can see the light in your life.

Yeah.

Just like Jesus walked, right?

Yes.

Just like Jesus walked amongst us.

And there's so many that followed and there's so many that understood fully because they got to walk and talk and listen to Christ.

So the entrepreneurial side of you though, was that something that deactivated and then activate reactivated when you became a Christian?

How did that work?

When I was, when I was in high school, before I got saved, I really, sincerely speaking, I really didn't have direction in terms of career and, um, entrepreneurship.

I, I, I just used to think about finishing school and I actually wanted to be an architect when I was done with school.

But then after getting converted, giving my life to the Lord, I was so on fire for God that, um, right after university, I didn't even get a chance to work.

I went straight into full-time ministry.

It was only, so everything I did in that regard, I, I used to do creative designing, editing and things like that.

I did it for the sake of ministry because I served under the church a lot.

But then in 2019, 2020, um, something tragic happened and I had to leave the church I was going to.

Um, I had, I found myself in a space where, um, I've now stepped into the marketplace.

I have to fend for my family and I'm no longer into full-time ministry.

And so I came across a mentor of mine who began to, um, help me and educate me and help me understand how that you can still make, even if you're called into ministry, you don't have to be limited to the four walls of the church.

You can still make impact for God in the marketplace.

And that is the reason why he gave you the certain abilities that you have, uh, whether it's skills, whether it's desires for entrepreneurship, they are God given.

So she began to help me remodel my life and help me understand how I could use my skills to help, um, our generation and help the world at large and how that that's still ministry as well.

And that it's ministry is not confined to the four walls of the church.

So it was only afterwards that I kind of, uh, reignited and reactivated, um, the gifts and the talents, the skills that God has given me.

You talked about having a family.

When did that happen between the space of time of being ordained and ministry?

Sorry, go ahead.

No problem.

Uh, so I got, I got ordained as a pastor at the age of 21.

I started pastoring my first branch in the Northern part of, of, of Zambia and Quito at the age of 23.

Uh, I got married at the age of 25 and I had my first children at the age of 27.

Wow.

How many children do you have?

I have two, two, two girls, twins.

Whoa.

It feels as though everything has been fast-tracked.

When I look back, I do look like, yo, I was, I was in fast track.

Even the, the blessings and the abundance, right.

You would think that, all right, because you gave your life to ministry that you could have had children earlier on, but then the twins, so it's, it's like, oh, stop.

Right.

It's like, that's amazing.

Yeah.

Wow.

All right.

So you're in the marketplace and what's the experience now of what I would imagine?

Well, locally, I would say Christianity and even in the Western side, Christianity and the marketplace often become separately.

So is it like that in Zambia?

It kind of is, but, but we have more, more Christians that are, are, are stepping into the marketplace and, and not separating their calling from either their careers or their entrepreneurship.

And so it's, it's become much, should I use the word easier?

Because I think back then people felt like they needed to separate their faith from their, from their, from their careers or their businesses.

But now it's becoming more, you know, we, we are becoming bolder to say, it doesn't matter whether you're a business woman, whether you're a doctor, you can still use your position to, to minister.

And it doesn't mean that you have to open your Bible while you're on your job.

It simply means that your lifestyle is, is, is, is becoming a message of hope and bringing people back to, to Christ.

Okay.

So for example, I work, part of my entrepreneurship side is I work in personal development.

And so I get to speak to a lot of young people, more focused on the youth.

And so sometimes I'm talking to young people who don't have directions, young people who are, who are dealing with addictions.

So in helping them from my perspective, I use my life and in, as I'm helping them, I am also letting them know that God is the foundation of everything I've been through, how I came out of certain struggles that I also went through as well.

I let them know that it begins first with God.

The only hope that they have is God.

And it's not just with my words, but just my life itself.

I have young people sometimes who just text me and say, can I talk to you?

You know, and from there I begin to help them.

So from that side of things it's, it's, it's, it's becoming much, we're becoming much bolder and it's becoming much easier to not separate the marketplace from the faith, from Christianity.

Hmm.

Future you is listening to this conversation five years from today.

What's a message you'd leave for future you?

Five years from today.

Um, I think the message I would leave out is, I would leave out is, is be bold.

Um, especially when you talk about stepping out into the world, your callings, your gifts, one, one, one scripture or one story, one parable that always comes to mind, um, is the parable of the talents.

So there was those three.

So the two maximize what God gave them, but the other one was very reserved out of fear.

And so when I look back at my life, I look at how I was, I never wanted to step out into the marketplace because I thought, you know, like that one servant who just wanted to keep, you know, that one thing God gave him to know, wait for the master to come instead of multiplying it.

Um, so when I look back from now, I would, the message I would tell myself is be bold, step out, use everything that God has given you, multiply.
