Sadaf Beynon:

using podcasts to grow their business.

Sadaf Beynon:

Matt Edmundson:

Hello and welcome to another brand new episode of Podjunction.

Matt Edmundson:

My name is Matt Edmundson.

Matt Edmundson:

Beside me is the debonair.

Matt Edmundson:

Sadaf Beynon.

Matt Edmundson:

How are we doing?

Matt Edmundson:

We're good.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

I noticed actually, just looking across the table, you've taken your

Matt Edmundson:

bracelet off because when we were getting set up, I did notice it

Matt Edmundson:

was jingle jangling a little bit.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

That's exactly why.

Matt Edmundson:

Okay.

Matt Edmundson:

Fair play to you.

Matt Edmundson:

So welcome to the show.

Matt Edmundson:

It's great to have you here with us.

Matt Edmundson:

We are a podcast which talks about podcasting.

Matt Edmundson:

Which I still think is quite funny, but yes, it's a podcast about

Matt Edmundson:

podcasting where we talk about how, um, how to use podcasting to grow

Matt Edmundson:

your business basically is what we do.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, what have we got coming up today?

Sadaf Beynon:

So we've got Daniel Budai again,

Matt Edmundson:

again, the legendary, yes,

Sadaf Beynon:

and he is talking about how he uses a free audit that

Sadaf Beynon:

he offers to his podcast guests as a generation tool for his business.

Matt Edmundson:

Ah, LeadGen.

Matt Edmundson:

So we're getting into LeadGen with Dan Budai who is a legend.

Matt Edmundson:

Dan Budai was in the last episode, wasn't he?

Matt Edmundson:

Yes, he was great.

Matt Edmundson:

To be fair, ladies and gentlemen, whilst it may be a week between you listening

Matt Edmundson:

to the episodes, depending on how you consume the content, it's been a

Matt Edmundson:

few weeks since we recorded that one.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm just wrecking my memory yes it was Dan, yes I remember what

Matt Edmundson:

we talked about, yes, good.

Matt Edmundson:

So we've got Dan again this week Dan's such a legend I really like what Dan's

Matt Edmundson:

done and he's really used podcasting to grow his business quite a lot, so

Matt Edmundson:

you're definitely going to want to pay attention to this because he has

Matt Edmundson:

definitely walked the walk as they say.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, it's you say there's a question you need to ask me

Matt Edmundson:

before we Yes, I have a question.

Sadaf Beynon:

And I will take this with me whenever.

Sadaf Beynon:

Okay, so what's the most unexpected feedback that you've ever received from

Sadaf Beynon:

a listener and how did it impact you?

Sadaf Beynon:

So not a guest,

Matt Edmundson:

but a listener.

Matt Edmundson:

The most unexpected feedback.

Matt Edmundson:

That's a really good question.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm glad I was prepped about this beforehand.

Matt Edmundson:

There's a few instances which stick out in my mind, right?

Matt Edmundson:

There was had one the other day, a friend of yours, a guy called Nick.

Matt Edmundson:

Is it Nick, the art guy?

Matt Edmundson:

Do you know who I mean?

Matt Edmundson:

Yes.

Matt Edmundson:

I think it's Nick.

Matt Edmundson:

The GP.

Matt Edmundson:

No, his name will come back to me.

Matt Edmundson:

That's really bad, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

Anyway.

Matt Edmundson:

The

Sadaf Beynon:

posters guy.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

He's a GP.

Sadaf Beynon:

He's a GP.

Matt Edmundson:

As well.

Matt Edmundson:

Oh, okay.

Matt Edmundson:

Didn't even know that.

Matt Edmundson:

Anyway, Nick, contact me on Instagram.

Matt Edmundson:

And said really loved this show, the eCommerce Podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

And he went all the way back to episode one.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm like, that always surprises me.

Matt Edmundson:

And it's not him.

Matt Edmundson:

It's not just him.

Matt Edmundson:

There's people that reach out to me on LinkedIn all the time going,

Matt Edmundson:

yeah, I really love the show.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm going to start again from episode one and consume them all.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm like, that is.

Matt Edmundson:

That's hundreds of hours of content and it's eCommerce.

Matt Edmundson:

It's not four years ago.

Matt Edmundson:

Some of it still makes sense, it was like four years ago in digital

Matt Edmundson:

terms is where it's pre Covid, post

Sadaf Beynon:

Covid, a lot of changes,

Matt Edmundson:

right?

Matt Edmundson:

There's been a lot of changes, but the one which surprises me, surprised me

Matt Edmundson:

the most at one point I was stopped in the street and someone recognized me.

Matt Edmundson:

Nice.

Matt Edmundson:

Tell us about that.

Matt Edmundson:

They'd been watching the video.

Matt Edmundson:

They're like, you're that guy on YouTube, aren't you?

Matt Edmundson:

I was like, and it turns out, yeah, they'd been watching the show.

Matt Edmundson:

Is that EP again?

Matt Edmundson:

Yes.

Matt Edmundson:

I think, I can't remember.

Matt Edmundson:

I think it was EP.

Matt Edmundson:

It was one of the podcasts.

Matt Edmundson:

It must have been EP because it was pre Push.

Matt Edmundson:

And just recognize me Oh, you're the guy on the, I was like, what the

Sadaf Beynon:

That's cool.

Sadaf Beynon:

But you know what, that's actually like often when you start a podcast, you can

Sadaf Beynon:

go for months before anyone picks you up.

Sadaf Beynon:

So it's nice that someone goes back and actually watches those early ones.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Actually Episode 1, you can't watch on EP, it's listen only.

Matt Edmundson:

And I was listening to it the other day because we were we've created

Matt Edmundson:

a new social media channel for EP.

Matt Edmundson:

And so we were talking about, the importance of the first nine posts.

Matt Edmundson:

Maybe we should do something like, the first nine posts on Instagram

Matt Edmundson:

for a podcast at some point.

Matt Edmundson:

So anyway we're on about, how do we create the first nine posts and stuff.

Matt Edmundson:

One of the posts was, I remember some of the questions like, how did it get

Matt Edmundson:

started and all that sort of stuff.

Matt Edmundson:

And I'm like it'd be just really interesting to actually

Matt Edmundson:

listen to episode one.

Matt Edmundson:

And I went back and went, Oh my Lord.

Sadaf Beynon:

Were you cringing inside?

Matt Edmundson:

I was like, Ooh, I just would not do it this way now.

Matt Edmundson:

It's just all a big learning curve, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Have you had any surprising feedback?

Matt Edmundson:

No.

Matt Edmundson:

No.

Matt Edmundson:

That was a short answer.

Matt Edmundson:

Okay.

Matt Edmundson:

On that bombshell, let's listen to Dan Badai and let's get into This

Matt Edmundson:

clip then Sadaf and I will be back to chat about how it works for us.

Matt Edmundson:

Here we go.

Matt Edmundson:

So you came up with the idea then of doing this free audit as like a sort of

Matt Edmundson:

an easy next step for clients to take.

Matt Edmundson:

You obviously do some kind of audit on their retention marketing and

Matt Edmundson:

come up with some strategy for them.

Matt Edmundson:

Do most people Then go on from the audit to being clients.

Matt Edmundson:

Is that, cause it sounds to me like the audit is a fair bit of work.

Matt Edmundson:

But I imagine if you're still doing it, then it's worthwhile.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah,

Matt Edmundson:

sure.

Daniel Budai:

Once they get to the audit, they can see the value.

Daniel Budai:

And I think it's really valuable for them.

Daniel Budai:

And it's free, right?

Daniel Budai:

So free audit.

Daniel Budai:

And I think not half of them, but like one third of them, they become clients

Daniel Budai:

in the end and some of them later, they come back a few months later.

Daniel Budai:

So I think we can say half of them, they become clients.

Daniel Budai:

Within six months.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

That's really interesting.

Matt Edmundson:

The third of people become clients is a similar statist statistic to a

Matt Edmundson:

few other people that I've spoken to actually, that do a similar sort of

Matt Edmundson:

thing and who have slightly different mechanisms, but these interesting

Matt Edmundson:

sort of trip wires along the way.

Matt Edmundson:

That you you convert about a third and when you think about, I just wanna rewind.

Matt Edmundson:

And say to you, you're converting about a third.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't know of anything else which has such high conversion ratios to clients.

Matt Edmundson:

If you think about what the, is podcasting right for my business?

Matt Edmundson:

You think here's Daniel saying to you, there's a mechanism that he has

Matt Edmundson:

where he converts a third of his.

Matt Edmundson:

Clients, in effect, or potential clients, ideal guests, and you go, that's a

Matt Edmundson:

really interesting thing to do, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

Really interesting thing.

Matt Edmundson:

And I guess if you've established quite a good relationship through the podcast, you

Matt Edmundson:

then deliver value through your services.

Matt Edmundson:

Do you find a lot of people stay customers because you've, it feels like

Matt Edmundson:

you would have a better relationship with those customers, right?

Matt Edmundson:

In the long run,

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah,

Daniel Budai:

Also what I have realized, these podcast guests,

Daniel Budai:

these tend to be the best

Daniel Budai:

clients, really good clients,

Daniel Budai:

and maybe it's just because of the personality fit, I don't know

Daniel Budai:

because, when a client comes from, let's say a cold email, but not from

Daniel Budai:

the podcast, Or from a platform.

Daniel Budai:

We are on a few platforms like Clutch, we are still on Upwork.

Daniel Budai:

Sometimes we have clients from there and there we know

Daniel Budai:

them less, their personality.

Daniel Budai:

And, those are harder to handle sometimes, while with referrals

Daniel Budai:

and podcasts it's much better.

Daniel Budai:

They stay longer, they spend more.

Daniel Budai:

Our average client stays with us 12 months.

Daniel Budai:

So one year, but these podcast guests, they tend to, again, they

Daniel Budai:

tend to stay longer and spend more.

Sadaf Beynon:

Sadaf Beynon:

conversation, check out PodJunction Cohort where you can listen to the

Matt Edmundson:

Welcome back.

Matt Edmundson:

That was a subtle cut.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah,

Sadaf Beynon:

sorry about that.

Matt Edmundson:

Again, welcome to Podjunction Cohort.

Sadaf Beynon:

Good reason to go to Cohort and finish off that his thought.

Matt Edmundson:

I love that.

Matt Edmundson:

Absolutely love that.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, very good.

Matt Edmundson:

Well done to the editing team there.

Matt Edmundson:

We nailed that one.

Matt Edmundson:

As you can see, ladies and gentlemen, or hear, if you're listening to the

Matt Edmundson:

audio version, when we do podcasts, we just tend to leave it in, warts and all

Matt Edmundson:

just a bit more authentic, including edits like that, because why not?

Matt Edmundson:

It's just a bit more fun.

Matt Edmundson:

It just means I can just make fun of something, create a

Matt Edmundson:

laugh, which is, super important.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, welcome back.

Matt Edmundson:

Now yeah, if you want to chat, it's worth saying, if you want to check

Matt Edmundson:

out that full interview with Daniel, which is just an astounding interview

Matt Edmundson:

and get into a bit more detail.

Matt Edmundson:

Do go check out Podjunction Cohort where you can listen to the whole interview

Matt Edmundson:

in its in its, I was going to say the whole interview in its entirety, which

Matt Edmundson:

is an obvious statement, but you can listen to the whole thing in Cohort.

Matt Edmundson:

Daniel's a legend.

Matt Edmundson:

Now, just to reaffirm the strategy to give you the basics of what

Matt Edmundson:

Daniel's doing here, so you know.

Matt Edmundson:

If it's just in case it's not clear, Daniel uses his podcast to

Matt Edmundson:

invite people onto his show, who would be an ideal client, right?

Matt Edmundson:

That's what he does.

Matt Edmundson:

And so he brings them onto the show.

Matt Edmundson:

He talks to them.

Matt Edmundson:

They obviously deliver some kind of value for the podcast guest.

Matt Edmundson:

And then Dan offers them like a free audit.

Matt Edmundson:

Cause it's like, Hey, we're a retention marketing company.

Matt Edmundson:

We do this, and this.

Matt Edmundson:

If you would like us to, we'll, we can do, we have this free audit

Matt Edmundson:

that we'll do for your business and your retention marketing.

Matt Edmundson:

And it's definitely not a heavy sell.

Matt Edmundson:

And he's, he's got his email follow up sequences on the back of that.

Matt Edmundson:

And out of the customers that say yes, so out of the podcast guests

Matt Edmundson:

that say yes, he ends up doing this free retention marketing audit,

Matt Edmundson:

which is actually a high value thing.

Matt Edmundson:

So it's not like you just, the problem with audits, I find.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't know if you find the same.

Matt Edmundson:

Someone offers me an audit.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm like, you're just going to sit there and pick fault with everything that we've

Matt Edmundson:

done and tell me how you do it better.

Matt Edmundson:

And so they they've lost their appeal a little bit to me just because I'm just

Matt Edmundson:

like, I just don't want to hear I'm doing wrong from you and tell me how you're

Matt Edmundson:

doing, but I don't think Dan does that.

Matt Edmundson:

That's not my experience with him.

Matt Edmundson:

But he does do this audit.

Matt Edmundson:

He delivers high value to the clients.

Matt Edmundson:

Then one third of the people to a half of those people that do the audit

Matt Edmundson:

within six months become his client.

Matt Edmundson:

So he is using the podcast as a lead generation tool.

Matt Edmundson:

. He's using it to talk to high value clients, so people that he,

Matt Edmundson:

will end up buying his services.

Matt Edmundson:

. So very targeted in who he has as a guest.

Matt Edmundson:

His strategy then is to offer them a sort of a next step after the podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

, and.

Matt Edmundson:

That leads to a very definite sort of growth in his customer base.

Matt Edmundson:

So that's how he's using Podcast to grow his business and he's talking there

Matt Edmundson:

specifically about this free audit.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, just to put it in context.

Matt Edmundson:

I thought that would be helpful.

Matt Edmundson:

That is very

Sadaf Beynon:

helpful.

Matt Edmundson:

Thank you, Matt.

Matt Edmundson:

My pleasure.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

So what did you take away?

Sadaf Beynon:

What did you think?

Sadaf Beynon:

Anything stick out?

Matt Edmundson:

I think it's interesting, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

Because The free audit as an idea.

Matt Edmundson:

So the concept of this free audit is, like I say you've got this

Matt Edmundson:

person on your show, you're, so you're using the show to interview.

Matt Edmundson:

People who would make great guests great clients.

Matt Edmundson:

And what Dan has done, which I think is brilliant and it does

Matt Edmundson:

work very well is he's then offered a very clear next step, right?

Matt Edmundson:

So that's the great thing about that audit.

Matt Edmundson:

Now I'm not saying an audit is something that, every podcaster should do if you're

Matt Edmundson:

using it to talk to your ideal guests, if you're using podcasts for that strategy.

Matt Edmundson:

But offering clients a very clear next step in their journey with

Matt Edmundson:

you, that makes a lot of sense.

Matt Edmundson:

Whether it's an audit, whether it's a free e book, whether it's a free service,

Matt Edmundson:

whether it's a reduced price service.

Matt Edmundson:

I think you have to test it a little bit.

Matt Edmundson:

But I think it has to be a no brainer.

Matt Edmundson:

As in, if you offer something, it has to be something that

Matt Edmundson:

makes sense for the guest.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

And is very hard to say no to.

Matt Edmundson:

Huh.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah I think the strategy of offering something to guests

Matt Edmundson:

like that is, is really good.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah, I agree.

Sadaf Beynon:

I think it's a chance to showcase your expertise.

Sadaf Beynon:

You're putting the money where your mouth where your money

Sadaf Beynon:

is, money where your mouth is.

Matt Edmundson:

Just pick either one, it'll be fine.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

And also it's an incentive, as you said for the client to.

Sadaf Beynon:

engage with you?

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

I think you need to give them another easy yes.

Matt Edmundson:

So Inviting someone onto your show who you don't know as a way to initially

Matt Edmundson:

connect with them is an easy yes, I think.

Matt Edmundson:

Certainly if you're talking to CEOs, business leaders, which

Matt Edmundson:

Daniel is, because his whole company is about retention marketing.

Matt Edmundson:

Especially for eCom businesses, using email.

Matt Edmundson:

To retain customers.

Matt Edmundson:

That's what his whole company's all about.

Matt Edmundson:

So he's gonna go and get on e-commerce business owners.

Matt Edmundson:

That's what he's gonna do.

Matt Edmundson:

And then he's gonna talk to 'em about how they would do retention marketing

Matt Edmundson:

and start to form that relationship.

Matt Edmundson:

And he's giving them an easy yes.

Matt Edmundson:

. Does that make sense?

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

And I think it's good to have two or three easy yeses.

Matt Edmundson:

Your lead your potential clients to say yes to.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm just re-listening to what I've just said in my head.

Matt Edmundson:

It does make sense.

Matt Edmundson:

Yes.

Matt Edmundson:

, there's a lot of yeses in that sentence.

Matt Edmundson:

So giving clients an easy yes and having a very deliberate journey, I think is

Matt Edmundson:

really important for podcast guests.

Matt Edmundson:

, right?

Matt Edmundson:

So if you are selling, it doesn't matter what you sell, like Dan's

Matt Edmundson:

retention, marketing, let's say you do.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't know, like an online course, right?

Matt Edmundson:

So you could use your podcast, you go and get people who would as a guest on

Matt Edmundson:

the show, you interview them, people who are like your course members, right?

Matt Edmundson:

So it's very targeted.

Matt Edmundson:

These would be the kind of people that would buy your course.

Matt Edmundson:

And you go listen.

Matt Edmundson:

Come on to the show.

Matt Edmundson:

You have a conversation with them.

Matt Edmundson:

Maybe there's something you can give them in between the course.

Matt Edmundson:

It's I can give you a free audit or a one on one coaching session,

Matt Edmundson:

or I can chat to you about this.

Matt Edmundson:

Or we've got this thing over here, which we can give you, which we'll onboard.

Matt Edmundson:

Whatever that is, I think it's a great thing to do.

Matt Edmundson:

Now in terms of when you offer this, then Dan does it in the same conversation.

Matt Edmundson:

So you'll have the interview, he'll end the interview like 10

Matt Edmundson:

minutes before the hard deadline.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

So if you scheduled an hour with the client to record or the guest to record,

Matt Edmundson:

he'll end it, 10 minutes to, and then he'll just spend two, three minutes, not

Matt Edmundson:

a heavy sell at all, just telling you about the audit and whether or not you

Matt Edmundson:

want to, you want to take them up on that.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, I think having an easy yes, just taking two or three minutes in a non

Matt Edmundson:

pressure environment, you've already, as long, what I find is when we do

Matt Edmundson:

this, cause we do it with push, one of our strategies is with push, there

Matt Edmundson:

are like with Podjunction guests, there are things that we could talk

Matt Edmundson:

to them about that there's all kinds of things that we can bring in to take

Matt Edmundson:

them on that journey with us to give them the sort of the next easy yes.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

And I think it's just important to do.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, definitely do it, pick your time, whether the end of the podcast is

Matt Edmundson:

the right time, whether you need more interaction before the next steps and

Matt Edmundson:

you've just got to test it, I think.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

In summary, it's a very effective tool for lead gen then.

Matt Edmundson:

It's super effective.

Matt Edmundson:

I think podcasting is a very effective tool for networking

Matt Edmundson:

and for making new connections.

Matt Edmundson:

I think.

Matt Edmundson:

The next step will give those people, will move them from just

Matt Edmundson:

being connections to leads, right?

Matt Edmundson:

So it is, I think that it is a good next step, lead generation.

Matt Edmundson:

What I find also is actually people come back to you, they might say to you, Oh

Matt Edmundson:

no, it's okay, I don't need the audit now.

Matt Edmundson:

But six months later, if you stayed in touch with them and maintain that

Matt Edmundson:

relationship, they may come back to you and say, you remember that free audit that

Matt Edmundson:

you said, is it, could we do that now?

Matt Edmundson:

And so that can also happen, I think.

Matt Edmundson:

So it, it is a bit of a long game.

Matt Edmundson:

The downside to it, is it's one to one.

Matt Edmundson:

In other words, your, his approach is you go get a client or

Matt Edmundson:

potential client on your podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

You record the podcast, which is not, it's fairly straightforward,

Matt Edmundson:

but let's, there's effort involved.

Matt Edmundson:

And then I'm offering them a free audit.

Matt Edmundson:

So I'm doing a lot of work up front to try and get the client.

Matt Edmundson:

And it's very much all about Dan.

Matt Edmundson:

So Dan has to do it.

Matt Edmundson:

Dan has to interview the guest.

Matt Edmundson:

Dan has to offer the free audit.

Matt Edmundson:

He doesn't actually do the audit all the time, I wouldn't have

Matt Edmundson:

thought, but maybe he does.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't know, but it's one of those things where it's very

Matt Edmundson:

resource intensive for you.

Matt Edmundson:

That's the downside to it.

Matt Edmundson:

And so like with Push, the Push To Be More podcast is very much this format.

Matt Edmundson:

We go and find people who we think would be ideal guests.

Matt Edmundson:

We interview them.

Matt Edmundson:

I interview them.

Matt Edmundson:

We chat to them.

Matt Edmundson:

And then we have a, a conversation at the end about and we've, we are

Matt Edmundson:

experimenting with things like, do we do the audit, do we do a free workshop,

Matt Edmundson:

do we do a free online course that's, we're ordinarily charging money for

Matt Edmundson:

over here and they could access it, and does that then lead on to bigger things?

Matt Edmundson:

You've got to test these different things, right?

Matt Edmundson:

And so we can do that with.

Matt Edmundson:

push, but it is very demanding on my time.

Matt Edmundson:

So I can maybe record.

Matt Edmundson:

I could, record seven or eight episodes a week.

Matt Edmundson:

If I really want.

Matt Edmundson:

I could just set a whole day aside and just talk to people.

Matt Edmundson:

So you've got to decide if it's worthwhile for you, I think to do that.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't know if I'd do this on an eCommerce business, if I was selling the

Matt Edmundson:

client like 30 bucks worth of product, at the end of it, maybe if their lifetime

Matt Edmundson:

value is high enough, it's worth doing.

Matt Edmundson:

I think I'd probably have other things involved in that.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

But I think if you've got high value clients that require a

Matt Edmundson:

good relationship at the start.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

And you don't mind getting your, you don't mind getting your feet dirty or

Matt Edmundson:

whatever, your hands dirty or your feet.

Matt Edmundson:

Either one's fine.

Matt Edmundson:

Pick one.

Matt Edmundson:

Pick one's totally fine.

Matt Edmundson:

But I think it's a really interesting strategy and I think

Matt Edmundson:

it, it, it definitely works for us.

Matt Edmundson:

I've just seen it work for other people.

Matt Edmundson:

I know it works super well for Dan.

Matt Edmundson:

What was interesting was, I don't know if you picked up on this, was he said that

Matt Edmundson:

podcasting guests make the best clients.

Matt Edmundson:

In that.

Matt Edmundson:

No, I didn't pick up on it.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

The way it worked was the relationship.

Matt Edmundson:

with podcasting guests?

Matt Edmundson:

Because it starts on a very different footing, right?

Matt Edmundson:

So let's say I, I go and invite you onto my show, right?

Matt Edmundson:

I'm trying to flog you my podcasts and services.

Matt Edmundson:

You come onto the show.

Matt Edmundson:

We have a great conversation.

Matt Edmundson:

It's a great way to start a relationship.

Matt Edmundson:

You remember it.

Matt Edmundson:

I remember it's just good fun.

Matt Edmundson:

We put the podcast out, you share it with your friends.

Matt Edmundson:

It's something that you're proud of, right?

Matt Edmundson:

And all that sort of stuff versus if you.

Matt Edmundson:

And then I say to you, listen, we do the retention marketing thing.

Matt Edmundson:

Would you like a free audit?

Matt Edmundson:

And you go, I haven't stance.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, that'd be great actually.

Matt Edmundson:

And so you take that and then you end up, becoming a client.

Matt Edmundson:

And what Dan said is you if you go that route, you stay longer

Matt Edmundson:

and you spend more, right?

Matt Edmundson:

Whereas if you just approach our agency and say, listen I need some

Matt Edmundson:

help with retention marketing and we go, sure, here's what we do.

Matt Edmundson:

Even if I offer that same free audit, that client is less likely

Matt Edmundson:

to stay as long or spend as much.

Matt Edmundson:

And the reason is not because what the value of the service is the same.

Matt Edmundson:

It, the reason is because what, how it started, that relationship started.

Matt Edmundson:

Do you see what I mean?

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, I do.

Matt Edmundson:

And so that's incredibly powerful.

Matt Edmundson:

So that the relationship starts on a much better footing.

Matt Edmundson:

We've talked about this before, meaningful conversations on a podcast and how guests

Matt Edmundson:

come onto a show and instantly open up.

Matt Edmundson:

Instantly, it's not even.

Matt Edmundson:

You don't even have to warm up, on Push we start with a question, which I, we

Matt Edmundson:

start, we ask guests on the, I ask guests on the podcast, I've read their bio

Matt Edmundson:

out, I've introduced them to the show and I read it out and I say, listen, if

Matt Edmundson:

you could have your own podcast and you could have anybody on the show as your

Matt Edmundson:

guest to interview, past or present, that's had a really big impact on your

Matt Edmundson:

life, who would it be and why, right?

Matt Edmundson:

That's a deep question to get straight into.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

If I make, if you called me up and said, listen, I'm interested

Matt Edmundson:

in your podcasting service.

Matt Edmundson:

And I said, great Sadaf, listen, let me ask you a question before we get started.

Matt Edmundson:

You're going to go, who is this lunatic?

Matt Edmundson:

On the phone, what is he talking about?

Matt Edmundson:

Whereas on a podcast, because we're recording it, it just

Matt Edmundson:

makes total sense, right?

Matt Edmundson:

It's a different environment and you're like, yeah, let's do it.

Matt Edmundson:

I remember, I think I've mentioned this before, but I remember one guest

Matt Edmundson:

saying to me, Matt, I told you in the first 30 minutes that conversation

Matt Edmundson:

stuff, I've not told my closest friends.

Matt Edmundson:

You talk about a great way to start a relationship with

Matt Edmundson:

a potential client, right?

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah, it's one of those where I think bringing it back to what Dan

Matt Edmundson:

was talking about, the free audit, having a very clear next step for

Matt Edmundson:

your guests, if you're using this strategy, makes an awful lot of sense.

Matt Edmundson:

Now, can I do a shameless plug?

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Go for it.

Matt Edmundson:

I'm going to.

Matt Edmundson:

Shameless plug.

Matt Edmundson:

If you want to know more about this strategy.

Matt Edmundson:

We have a course called the Podcast Connection Accelerator and at the

Matt Edmundson:

time of recording it is almost done.

Matt Edmundson:

So hopefully when this comes, it's coming out next week, isn't it?

Matt Edmundson:

It is, yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

So yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

I.

Matt Edmundson:

Certainly, the first part of the course is now live.

Matt Edmundson:

The second part is getting uploaded in the next week.

Matt Edmundson:

So there's a brand new course called Podcast Connection Accelerator, which

Matt Edmundson:

walks you through this exact strategy.

Matt Edmundson:

So we take you through it line by line, like how to find the guests, how

Matt Edmundson:

to email them, how to structure your interview, all that sort of stuff.

Matt Edmundson:

So if you want to know more, check out the course, which will be

Matt Edmundson:

promoted on the Pod Junction website.

Matt Edmundson:

So it is a really interesting strategy.

Matt Edmundson:

That Dan talks about here, and we do have a course that goes into more detail

Matt Edmundson:

about it if you would like to know more.

Matt Edmundson:

So check that out at podjunction.com.

Matt Edmundson:

Just click on the courses link and it's called Podcast Connection Accelerator.

Matt Edmundson:

So there you go.

Matt Edmundson:

That was my shameless bloke.

Matt Edmundson:

Thank you, . That was great.

Matt Edmundson:

No.

Matt Edmundson:

Thank you,

Sadaf Beynon:

All right, so where are we up to, Matt?

Matt Edmundson:

Is there anything from you?

Matt Edmundson:

You've got lots of green ink on your paper.

Matt Edmundson:

Is there anything from you?

Matt Edmundson:

I've talked a lot on this episode, sorry.

Sadaf Beynon:

No, that's okay.

Sadaf Beynon:

Something you were saying earlier about, Dan has to do a lot of legwork.

Sadaf Beynon:

And spend a lot of time in, investing in doing the audits and all that.

Sadaf Beynon:

And I think you're right, but I think on the flip side it feeds into that

Sadaf Beynon:

whole relationship building, doesn't it?

Sadaf Beynon:

Because it shows the client that these guys are actually

Sadaf Beynon:

committed to, or investing in us.

Sadaf Beynon:

And also they know their stuff.

Sadaf Beynon:

Yeah.

Sadaf Beynon:

I think for Dan it, it works really well, doesn't it?

Sadaf Beynon:

Like his offer and obviously the results he's getting from that.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

No, totally.

Matt Edmundson:

For his business, it makes a lot of sense.

Matt Edmundson:

For what we do with the podcast agency, it makes a lot of sense.

Matt Edmundson:

That strategy, does it work for an eCommerce business?

Matt Edmundson:

It could do I think there's other things that you would bring into that.

Matt Edmundson:

I don't think it's the sole strategy.

Matt Edmundson:

But I think if you've got clients that are, we often say to people when talking

Matt Edmundson:

about this particular strategy, for me, if you have a CLV or a customer

Matt Edmundson:

lifetime value of at least 4, 000, right?

Matt Edmundson:

So if a customer's worth at least four grand to you.

Matt Edmundson:

I think it's a really interesting strategy to look at.

Matt Edmundson:

I've not seen many things perform as well as it does.

Matt Edmundson:

Like I say, the only downside is it requires a lot of effort from

Matt Edmundson:

the podcast host who's usually, not all the time, but who's usually

Matt Edmundson:

the CEO or leader of the business.

Matt Edmundson:

Because that's who clients probably want to talk to really but yeah I do

Matt Edmundson:

think it's an interesting strategy.

Matt Edmundson:

The other

Sadaf Beynon:

thing I wanted to point out, and I think a lot of our guests

Sadaf Beynon:

who've been on the show have said this as well, about targeting who

Sadaf Beynon:

your guests are going to be, like being heavily targeted with that.

Sadaf Beynon:

And I think it's the same with marketing.

Sadaf Beynon:

If you have targeted marketing, you get better results if

Sadaf Beynon:

you target your guests well.

Sadaf Beynon:

You know who your listeners are, all of, that whole mix the closer

Sadaf Beynon:

you get to getting that on point.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, the better off you're going to be.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

And I think your guests have to resonate.

Matt Edmundson:

With who your, like you say who your target audience is.

Matt Edmundson:

. And if you use Dan's strategy, your guests have to resonate

Matt Edmundson:

with the clients that you have.

Matt Edmundson:

Or you, we call them your ideal clients, right?

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

So maybe not clients that you have, but big clients that you want.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

So they have to resonate with those two audiences.

Matt Edmundson:

. There's no point in us interviewing somebody who's not really had a podcast.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah.

Matt Edmundson:

On this show, it wouldn't make any sense for our audience.

Matt Edmundson:

. And it wouldn't make any sense for the stuff which we offer those guests

Matt Edmundson:

that come onto our show because we have the courses, we have the

Matt Edmundson:

mastermind and all that sort of stuff.

Matt Edmundson:

And so it wouldn't make sense to do that.

Matt Edmundson:

So we have to, like you say, we have to be targeted.

Matt Edmundson:

So you're right.

Matt Edmundson:

The more targeted you can be, the more thought you put into it,

Matt Edmundson:

I think the better the outcome.

Matt Edmundson:

Yeah, definitely.

Matt Edmundson:

All right.

Matt Edmundson:

Is there anything else?

Sadaf Beynon:

No, I've got all my notes covered now.

Matt Edmundson:

That was close.

Matt Edmundson:

Wow.

Matt Edmundson:

Do we know who's in next week's show?

Matt Edmundson:

We do.

Matt Edmundson:

I want to say we, I'm looking at you.

Matt Edmundson:

Richard Brooks.

Matt Edmundson:

Richard Brooks.

Matt Edmundson:

What a legend.

Matt Edmundson:

Agents of Change.

Matt Edmundson:

Oh yeah.

Matt Edmundson:
