On July 24, 1915, one of the darkest disasters in Chicago’s history unfolded on the Chicago River.

The SS Eastland, a passenger steamship preparing to carry hundreds of people across Lake Michigan, suddenly began to list while still tied to the dock. Within moments, the ship rolled completely onto its side—trapping passengers inside and beneath the vessel.

More than 844 people lost their lives that day, making the Eastland disaster one of the deadliest tragedies in Chicago history.

But some believe the story didn't end when the rescue crews left the river.
