Corinne Foxx:

No, it's wine. Oh, with bubbles. It says this is all over the place.

Natalie McMillan:

Oh, hey, you know what? That's on brand for me to

Corinne Foxx:

Bob all over. Margarita. It's whatever it was whatever it was. You have to identify as anything. No. I love that. It's very chaotic. It's very chaotic. Okay, well, we're gonna read it at the end of the episode.

Natalie McMillan:

Oh, I should say it's Playa banderas

Corinne Foxx:

play habanero spicy. Margarita, spicy mango. Wow, spicy mango Margarita wine cocktail with bubbles. It doesn't know what it is.

Natalie McMillan:

And neither do I.

Corinne Foxx:

Not I was thinking about something that I wanted to talk to you about to talk to you about? I don't know if I've told you. So Archie, you guys know Archie my dog. Archie Max. We use a toy subscription service. I won't use names here. But if they want to sponsor Okay, yeah. And I love it. Every month we get some new toys because he chews them up so fast. Shredded. So in the Halloween box came and it was a little a little suspicious of it. Because I opened the box and it was a stuffed little plush toy cat. But the cat was wearing a BDSM I would say BDSM were so she was in fishnet legging variable and Thiago fishnet leggings and like little corset and I thought, Okay, well, it's Halloween. Sure. She was like dressing up as a sexy cat. She was a cat dressed up as. Okay, then another stuffed plush toy was a ghost holding a beer. And it said sheep faced on it. I thought okay, Wow, this pizza party bought Yeah, it's a party box but I'm thinking this also going into families then the December theme is getting stoned. What? Yeah, you think it would be holidays you think it'd be gingerbreads but no the toys that you could choose from to add into your box were a piece like a little stuffed piece, like a pie like a little pipe a little, a little stuffed pipe. Another one was a a stuffed like fake treat thing that had that was just like an edibles. So it was like fake edibles. And then another one I forgot list. And then another one was just a little tennis ball. But it was actually like a stoned weed thing and it had like droopy eyes and like a cigarette. And I thought, why this is the this is the December box. I feel like that must be a glitch. Oh, no, it was not I was showing APR, okay, like APR 20, Whatever for 21 Christmas, like Okay, so I'm a young like 20s You know, send it to me I'm gonna be fine. Right? But like pricing was such a family's like, right. Game and there was like a little, little joint. Well, girl, I was just like, this is this is chaotic. I would love to know the I'm not caring. Almost was gonna write in an email like, hey, is this appropriate? Like what seems like an 18 and older box? Well, it's like, not only that, but is just like, I want to know what the reason it was called doggy Days. Days like instead of holidays? Yes, yes. Yes. Yes. Yes, doggie days. Oh, no. Was it holiday? It was hella blase. blase. blase box. Okay, so here's my theory. I think they hired a Gen Z intern. And they were like, This is gonna be the way No, this is what I think. I think they had prototypes made for like for ape like before 20 or something. And they didn't get done in time. They're like, we have to reuse these somehow figure out how to do it. And somebody was like, hollow Blaze. And they were like, sold. That had to have been, that's the only reason why you would do that. It seems chaotic. To me. It's very chaotic on brand for the episode. Yeah.

Corinne Foxx:

So let's get into this week's episode, which is how to survive the holidays.

Natalie McMillan:

Yeah, well, you know, lots of people experience anxiety and depression during the holiday seasons. And people who already live with a mental health condition should take extra care to attend to their overall health and wellness during this time, because, you know, you can really get tripped on get down. But what are the holiday blues?

Corinne Foxx:

Yeah, well, according to Nami, the National Alliance on Mental Illness shout out, shout out extra stress, unrealistic expectations, or even sentimental memories that accompany that season can be a catalyst for the holiday blues. Some can be at risk for feelings of loneliness, sadness, fatigue, tension and a sense of loss. A lot of seasonal factors can trigger the holiday blues to like less sunlight, which I think is really getting to me. That's a big one for you. Yeah, I'm really light sensitive. I meant to ask my cousin a question about UV light and put a pin in that for later pin input. Also, like changes in your diet or routine alcohol at parties, over commercial realization, or the inability to be with friends or families are all factors that can seriously affect your mood. Yeah, but let's get into some facts because we love facts. And we'll start out with some facts.

Natalie McMillan:

Yes, here's number one. Did you know 55% of Americans are experiencing the holiday blues, with many saying their loneliness is worse than last year. Gen Z years 75% and single adults 65% feel lonelier than their counterpart. Among those feeling lonely. The top reasons cited are not being around loved ones seasonal depression and grief. Yeah, checks now checks out. The American Psychological Association found that 38% of people say their stress increases during the holidays. And only 8% of people say they feel happier.

Corinne Foxx:

That's interesting. That's shocking because it's marketed and I love I love this time of year. Yeah, fun season of course. But it is marketed as like this is supposed to be the best like right moments of your year. Yes, right now and I think that's like a lot of pressure on people. Do you're like I guess. Yeah, but like Arlie

Natalie McMillan:

also sets up so much pressure like people expect a lot. Yeah, so then it's like, easier let down. So also, nearly a quarter of Americans reported feeling extreme stress come holiday time, according to a poll by the American Psychological Association holidays. Stress statistics show that up to 69% of people are stressed by the feeling of having a lack of time. 69% are stressed by a preceding lack of money. And 51% are stressed out about the pressure to give or get gifts. Yeah, that's that thing where it's like high pressure.

Corinne Foxx:

And just like Ashley, you have kids, I can't. Like I'm just buying gifts right now for my family. And I'm like, I'm just struggling with you know, trying to figure out who's getting on right being somebody already get that for them. Yeah, exactly. But I can't imagine having kids and then you got to get them 50,000 thing.

Natalie McMillan:

Well, the only thing I think of is when we were kids. I remember I scream I lost my shit when I got an American Girl doll. No, you gotta get these kids apart on iPad. You gotta get them beats you be. I mean, the pressure so high that they're like, though I do think an American girl was pricey back in the day. Oh, they were that's why I was like, this is the best day of my life. Yeah, they weren't. But I mean, I feel like the kids nowadays, yeah, they are requiring a lot of technological tools expensive. It's expensive. Substance abuse is an unhealthy tool that some Americans use to cope with all of this holiday loneliness and stress, more than one in five. So 21% of Americans have an unhealthy alcohol and or drug habit during this time of year with a 9% saying substance abuse is a frequent problem.

Corinne Foxx:

That is listen to one in five Americans have unhealthy alcohol and drug habits during the holidays. That's insane. That's why yield to me.

Natalie McMillan:

That's well, let's get into why. Right.

Corinne Foxx:

Yeah, well, many people often get less sleep during the holidays due to holiday related stress. And when asked about those specific stressors, the top reasons reported were financial factors, family gatherings, traveling and disrupted routines. The holidays can also be a difficult time of year for people who have lost friends and family members. And the memory of the loss can make it harder to cope with the holiday season stressors. Yeah. So let's get into these specific stressors. So if you are dealing with financial stress, which is one of the biggest holiday stressors, what can you do?

Natalie McMillan:

So number one, you can set a little budget for yourself. So review your earnings and expenses and then decide how much you're willing to spend on holiday gifts, food and other items. Consider making a list and assigning each item a specific dollar amount, and that's going to help you overcome the temptation to overspend. Also planning your shopping, whether you're headed to the grocery store, or braving the crowds at the mall. Know what you intend to buy and who it's for. Sticking to your list will also help keep you from buying unnecessary items and prevent overspending. It's easy to make impulse purchases with all the eye candy in the stores at this time of the year, especially on the endcaps you know, you're like ooh, little more than $1. And then you're like, Oh, I spent $40 on end cap garbage. But if you stick on track, you're not going to fall prey to the consumer tricks. When you know that you don't need you don't need that stuff.

Corinne Foxx:

Also another way to combat that financial stress is to not buy it if you can't afford it. A 2016 report from investment management firm T Rowe Price showed that 25% of parents have dipped into their emergency savings, or 401 K retirement plan core taking out a payday loan in order to cover holiday expenses. If you can't afford to buy her children something on their wish list without taking out a loan or borrowing from another account. The best option is to not buy it it is okay to say no your children will survive. shortchanging your savings or going into debt is ultimately more detrimental to your family than skipping a few presents, which just like breaks my I know it's tricky. It's because I understand like you want to give your children everything or just even something you like. And because they don't understand Yeah, we have some tips later to if you're low on cash. Yeah, we do. Also another way to combat that financial stress is to remember what the season is actually about. It's easy to get swept up in the consumerism of the season. But remember that it isn't about money and materialism, focusing on its religious purpose or enjoying time with their loved ones will keep you from stressing over less important things. Also, in the creative, which we can help you with you can give thoughtful gifts while spending a fraction of the costs. If you're crafty, handmade gifts are extremely thoughtful and if you're lacking in those artistic abilities like me, you can just give the gift of your time. You know, cooking someone a meal giving you parents a night owl while you babysit or offering to clean someone's house or Gifts that recipients will love and will cost you nothing. That would be a great gift for a friend that just had a baby. Yeah. And also because you're a great babysitter. Oh my god, your baby whisperer. Really? Good. Thank you. You feel like babies love you. I feel like babies. Really? I really do the gravity. I have like your energy connection. Yes. So if you're listening to this and you are low on cash and you want to get creative, what are some ideas for giving some? Some gifts?

Natalie McMillan:

Okay, so there's a lot of thoughtful meaningful gifts that you can give people that cost very little. And it is the thought that counts, right? Like it really it really is. When I remember the hand made things more than I do. The things that are just like often Amazon Yes. Like last year, my cousin made all these different, like canned goods and sent them to me. It was so amazing. I loved it. Wow. So baked goods for one. And actually, we had a family friend growing up who every year, she didn't do gifts, she brought us a plate of her fudge, love fudge every year. I'm like, Yes, like the fudge is coming. You know, baked good, everybody loves them. You can also make your own mix in a jar. So like you can use an old pasta sauce jar or something. And layer in your favorite cookie ingredients. And then add a cute little tag with instructions. You can do that with hot chocolate also, like a little like premade Yes, just put some marshmallows and they're gonna love cute. You can make them a piece of art. Or you can decorate blank cards for them to use whenever they need to send a quick thank you know, a birthday card, you know that there's always a birthday or Thank you. They're like, I don't have a card for this. Yeah, make them a personalized playlist. I love that. Playlist, they they would cry. I mean, so fun. So cute. If you're good at sewing, you can make things like pillows or those like rice, heat packs, I might need those I love all the time watch. I actually sleep with one because it's like a weighted thing. And it's warm. Also, like a DIY ornament.

Corinne Foxx:

So love it so many great ideas. And I'm sure there's like a million online too, that you can google for sure.

Natalie McMillan:

So let's get into how to survive family stress because we went through the financial stuff. Now this the family stuff. Yeah.

Corinne Foxx:

Well, we actually have an entire you guys an entire episode on this because it's such an in depth topic. So you can go back and check out I think it's how to navigate adult relationships with your parents. Yeah, yeah. Something like that. That that really covers, you know, this is a deeper situation. This is just to get through the holiday. Also last year, I think we did how to survive the holidays with your family or something. Yeah, we also have that we yeah, we have a lot. We've got a lot of episodes at this point. Well, the first thing you don't want to do is to use the holidays as a time or place to repair old childhood wounds. Yes, literally. With a difficult family, keep conversation simple. Don't start a debate or get drawn into their drama. And if you can't answer without wanting to lash out, then just excuse yourself from the conversation and maybe don't come back. You know, and don't apologize, defend yourself or make excuses. It's all about really, which is what the next tool is boundary boundaries, boundaries, boundaries boundaries. If someone tries to put you off balance. Remind yourself not to personalize it. How people act and behave is reflection of who they are and has nothing to do with you. And even though it can be tough. Try not to personalize hurtful comments, and remind yourself to not take the bait and rise above the clamor by mentally sending love to everyone before you walk in the door. Just send some love and be like I'm not shield, what do we do we have an energetic shield. Also have your therapy session booked. post-holiday have that right time to be here. Yeah. Also, another thing you can do to survive holiday stress with your families is you don't even have to go home. If you don't want don't have to go home if you don't want to. It's hard. It's hard. But you you are an adult you are. But we will say to tell your family about your plans as soon as you've made that decision. Or if it makes sense. As soon as you start to consider not going home in general. Yes, it is Kind and Courteous to let someone know as early as possible that you won't be attending an event. They're expecting you and your family deserves same respect. So you can't Yeah, I mean, you can but you know try not to date up day before like, right, not coming, right.

Natalie McMillan:

This reminds me of what was that movie Four Christmases? Were Vince Vaughn. Yes, they were like, they always made up a lie as to why yes, yeah. And then like their trip got canceled. And then they saw them on national TV and then they had to go to all four nightmare.

Corinne Foxx:

So if you just have the holiday blues in general, what are some ways of avoiding it or pushing through it?

Natalie McMillan:

So these are tips from our King? Dr. Duckworth, good luck. Dr. Duck, the only man we've ever had on our show,

Corinne Foxx:

he is the Chief Medical Officer of Nami, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. And he is an angel.

Natalie McMillan:

Yeah, he's a light in this actual Angel. So this is what he says. He says, stick to normal routines as much as possible. Get enough sleep, which can be particularly hard if you're traveling, visiting with family or hosting people at your house. Or you need to stay up and wrap all those last minute gifts. But prioritizing sleep is so important to actually be present and enjoy your holiday. Another tip is to take time for yourself, but don't isolate yourself. So you know, this is where I get hung up. You might feel the desire to hide away during the holidays, especially if you're alone, or if you're far away from your family. And while having me time is important, isolating yourself can make things worse. That's an interesting distinction. They can't just mean time and how much it might isolate. Right? How do you know, I think I start to know when I'm like, Oh, I'm in a little bit of a problem. When I start avoiding my phone, and I'm like, nobody talked to me. Oh, buddy, come find me. I'm dead to the world. You know? No, that's I think where my that's where my gauge is. Another thing is to eat and drink in moderation. It's very tempting to go balls to the wall with all the delicious food and the treats. but be mindful of how the foods actually making you feel. If you drink one too many hot chocolates, let's say you might feel physically ill. I don't think they're talking about hot chocolate. I think he's talking about your drinks. Well, that's what he says next. So he's like, if you feel sick, like your mental health is going to go below your physical health, right? Like you're going to be like, I feel sick. I can't concentrate on my mental health. But additionally, if you're already feeling down alcohol, don't think too much of it. Because it is a downer. Yeah, it might make you feel better in the moment. But then you might wake up the next day feeling worse. I think you'll definitely wake up the next day feeling worse. I can only I can confirm xiety Another thing, this is our favorite thing in the whole wide world. Taking a walk around the block he Yeah, doctor can suggest getting in some kind of movement. Even if it's just a little walk. There's no downside.

Corinne Foxx:

Yeah, especially like if you need to just take a breather from the fam. Yeah, you know, like, Oh, I'm gonna go take your family dog. Yeah, like little, little say, racy. There's always this weird names.

Natalie McMillan:

Actually, at Thanksgiving, Kenny and I were like, we should go on a walk. And my mom was like, oh, take Sunday. That's her dog. And we're like, okay, and she goes, but you can't walk her. She lives in a mobile home park. You can't walk the dogs in the mobile. So we had to take her in the stroller. Yeah, we strolled her around. But he was a lovely little walk. Yeah, but we were pushing a dog and a stroller. Another thing is to make a to do list if you're feeling overwhelmed, and then try to simplify it down as much as possible and delegate.

Corinne Foxx:

I think women during this time of year take on a lot of the pressure of like, being the cooks being the gift giver, the rapper, the all that and like we got to delegate.

Natalie McMillan:

Right, you know, right assigned tasks. And I think that a lot of it might come down to the what is the thing selective incompetence? Sounds like oh, I don't know how to wrap up rosin. I'm gonna sit here, you know? Yeah. It's like, why don't you try? Look it up on YouTube. You could do anything. I guarantee you. Anyone is better than wrapping a present than me. I'm terrible. You've received my presence. One time you audibly I can't figure it out. My brain doesn't do it.

Corinne Foxx:

It's so weird. Because you're like an artist at sea. Or like, you know, you work with your hands. And like, it seems like you'd be crafty and spatial thing. Yeah, I don't know. Because you have to like measure out and how much is getting, you're gonna need to cover it.

Natalie McMillan:

Oh, I've got no idea I'll try every year. And I cannot figure. Final tip is to set reasonable goals for yourself when it comes to the holiday activities. Shopping for presents, cooking for friends and family sending out holiday cards. And attending holiday parties can quickly eat up every minute of your time in the week surrounding the holidays. So recognize what you have the bandwidth for and try not to over commit yourself. Even though it might be tempting. Yeah. It's so easy to be like yeah, I'll do that. Oh, yeah. I'll come see your baby. Oh, come do that. Okay. Say no. And then it's January 1. And you're like what happened today? No, no, say no.

Corinne Foxx:

Well, we hope you guys learn more about the holiday blues. Why it's okay to feel stressed during this time, and how to survive the holidays and we just hope you guys have a happy holidays. Great holiday. This is for you to like enjoy it and fine and feel good. And if you're at home and you're like my family stressed me out be like, I gotta go take a call with my friends, non current, and then turn on the podcast and go forward on the podcast or just email us about this. Uh, yeah, cuz we we get there with you. Well, yeah, we got it. So now Should we circle back on the fly? Yeah Ben Darras spicy mango Margarita wine cocktail with bubbles that we've been drinking Agave wine with natural flavors. I mean, who knows what it is? I have no idea. This is not this is your time to shine because it's your birthday. She let me have it because my let her have this you guys, the hottie of the week. My favorite hottie. I almost wanted to switch it up at the last minute. But I'm not going to Adam Sandler. Natalie has been fighting for this for a while and hey, I love Adam Sandler. It was just hard for me to categorize him as a hottie. But here's the thing. He's been my hottie forever. He's been your hottie forever. I'm just saying for me and being in the well being of the podcast. I don't know if this makes sense. Right. Right. Right. But it's never made sense to anybody. But I stand today it does because it is your birth stamp. If you think Adam Sandler is hot. Let me know. There's like dozens of us. There are dozens. I mean, he's charming.

Natalie McMillan:

So it makes sense, but okay, so wonder Adam Sandler. I do not know how this is a margarita. I love it. What it is, I don't know what it is. But I wouldn't would you say this is a margarita? No. Tequila. This is I don't know how they came up with this. But it's good. I'm gonna give it an Adam Sandler are like I love it. I actually will get this again, is sprouts. I love it. It's 10 out of 10. For me also it came in different flavors. So there was like the mango. There was like a pair. There was like a pair. Well, maybe we'll try another one. This isn't this is a 10 out of 10 for me, but it didn't have to be done. I'm done for you. I would have given it a nine. But just the fact that it's Adam today. I feel like we got to go out if we don't do it often. It's really really good. Very good. We're gonna give it an automatic Adam. It's a 10 out of 10 you guys you guys pick it up wherever you could find that sprouts. I wish that these would replace white claws. Oh, yes. I white claws and true leaves and all that shit. No, I don't want it

Corinne Foxx:

because you know what it is? What is the alcohol in that? It's just I don't know. I think it's a nail polish remover.

Natalie McMillan:

It just, it always makes my my Tama dAche Okay, and they just don't taste good. I will say there's absolutely no ingredient list for this. I do not know what's in here. Well, you know they don't have to put ingredients on alcoholic beverage. Oh, it does contain sulfites and there's a warning on it. That it? Oh no, no, it's just an alcohol drinking alcohol while pregnant. Oh right. Well, sulfites are in almost 100% of wine. Oh, it's just like part of a fermentation process. Anyways, we love it you guys is great. It's in the show notes if you want to drink

Corinne Foxx:

Alright, this is part of the episode where we play a little wrap up game and this week it's fuck marry kill. Birthday, Gao. Would you like to go first? Okay, don't you want me to go first? So you can go? Yeah, sure you go first. Okay, so it's week of Christmas. So I'm doing Christmas characters. Okay. Oh, fun. Fuck Mary cow. Santa. The Grinch? Ebenezer Scrooge.

Natalie McMillan:

Oh, man. Those are weird ones. Those are weird ones. Okay. Ooh, I'm gonna move god. Okay. I guess I'll marry Santa. Because like, he's like, I don't want to fuck Santa. But we can be in a sexless marriage. Very common, you know? Yeah. Very common. And like, 99% of marriage. Yeah. And I just like he's a great guy. Yeah, you know, happy Jolly Ranchers made me very easy. I'm thinking about it. Well, I'm gonna fuck the Grinch. Yeah, of course. Cuz he's, he's, he's. Yeah, he's he's spicy. Time do and secretly.
