In this episode, I reflect on the central message that has emerged across the last 50 weekday episodes about artificial intelligence, technology, schools, systems, teachers, and students: You cannot take the human out of humanity. No matter how advanced technology becomes, education will continue to depend on human connection.
I explore why humanity must be protected intentionally. Relationships, empathy, listening, student voice, and human-centered school cultures do not happen automatically. They are built through deliberate choices made by teachers, leaders, students, and communities. Technology can support that work, but it should serve people rather than replace them.
This episode also challenges the idea that efficiency should always be the goal. Faster is not automatically better, and more automation does not always improve learning. Relationships take time, growth takes time, and authentic learning often requires patience, presence, struggle, encouragement, and trust.
As I close this part of the series, I return to a belief strengthened by 23 years in the classroom: teachers still matter. Students still need trusted adults, encouragement, belonging, mentorship, and relationships. We are not educating machines. We are helping human beings survive, grow, and thrive, and that work still requires humanity.

Today's episode is called Choosing Humanity on Purpose.
Over the last 50 weekday episodes, we've talked about AI.
We've talked about technology.
Relationships.
Assessment.
Systems.
Policy.
Students.
Teachers.
And honestly, if I had to summarize the entire series into one central message, it might be this:
You cannot take the human out of humanity.
No matter how advanced technology becomes.
No matter how powerful AI becomes.
No matter how efficient systems become.
Human beings still need human beings.
And that matters because education has always been human work.
Well, before we get into it, I want to ground myself in gratitude. Here are three things that I'm thankful for.
The first thing that I'm thankful for is people who make time for meaningful conversations.
Good conversations help us slow down and reconnect.
The second thing that I'm thankful for is communities that support one another.
Strong communities remind us that we do not do hard things alone.
Not at all.
And the third thing that I'm thankful for is opportunities to keep growing.
Growth keeps life interesting and meaningful.
Well, let's get back into the main topic.
Technology is becoming more powerful.
We know this.
AI is becoming extremely powerful.
Systems continue evolving.
Schools continue changing.
And that creates an important question:
As the world changes, what do we intentionally protect?
So the topic once again is Choosing Humanity on Purpose.
Here's what I've been thinking about.
Humanity does not happen automatically.
Not at all.
Relationships require intentionality.
Empathy requires intentionality.
Listening requires intentionality.
Human-centered schools happen because people intentionally build them.
And that work matters deeply.
Technology should serve people.
Tools matter.
Tools can be great.
Technology can be great.
Innovation can be valuable.
AI matters.
But tools should support human flourishing, not replace it.
Technology works best when people remain at the center.
Education is fundamentally human work.
Students are human beings.
Teachers are human beings.
Learning happens inside relationships.
Encouragement.
Mentorship.
Trust.
Education has always depended on people.
Imperfection is part of being human.
Human beings are imperfect.
Messy.
Emotional.
Complex.
And honestly, that's okay.
I mean, you listen to these podcasts.
They're far from perfect.
Education was never supposed to be perfect.
People are not perfect.
Education was never supposed to be perfect.
It was supposed to be human.
Empathy remains essential.
Students need compassion, y'all.
They need compassion.
They need encouragement.
Grace.
Understanding.
Real, authentic understanding.
Human connection still matters deeply, especially during difficult moments.
Choosing people means choosing empathy, even when efficiency feels easier.
Student voice matters.
Students deserve opportunities to speak.
They deserve opportunities to lead.
To create.
To question.
To contribute.
Human-centered classrooms create space for voices, not just compliance.
Because students are human beings.
Presence matters.
In distracted times, slowing down matters.
Listening matters.
Being fully present is critical.
Attention has become valuable.
Presence may be one of the greatest gifts educators offer young people.
Efficiency is not always the goal.
Efficiency can draw you in.
It can be very tempting.
But faster is not always better.
More automated is not always better.
Human growth takes time.
Relationships take time because we're dealing with imperfect humans.
Meaningful learning takes time too.
True, authentic, meaningful learning often takes time.
Teachers still matter.
They do.
If we think we're simply going to swap out real human teachers for AI robots and expect that to be a successful answer for educating human beings, that's not the answer.
That's not going to create the success some people may imagine.
Teachers matter because teachers guide.
They encourage.
Challenge.
Mentor.
Inspire.
Connect.
Only a fellow human being can connect with another human being in that way.
Those responsibilities remain deeply important.
They are not disappearing.
They're not going anywhere.
If anything, they are becoming more important.
Humanity must be chosen intentionally.
Schools shape culture.
Teachers shape culture.
Communities shape culture.
We choose what matters through our actions.
Through our behavior.
Humanity stays alive when people intentionally protect it.
Choosing humanity on purpose may ultimately be the most important educational decision we make moving forward.
As I do a reflective close, I can't help but think about when computers first entered schools.
People made all kinds of wild predictions.
Some people predicted that teachers would eventually disappear from classrooms.
That human teachers would simply go away.
That did not happen.
Now AI has created similar conversations.
But here's what I believe after 23 years of running my own classroom:
Students still need relationships.
Students still need belonging.
Students still need encouragement.
Students still need trusted adults.
Because we are not educating robots.
We are educating human beings.
Helping human beings survive and thrive still takes humanity.
So moving forward, my hope is simple:
Use technology.
Learn technology.
Adapt.
Grow.
But never stop choosing people.
Never stop choosing relationships.
And never stop choosing humanity on purpose.
