[:

[00:00:05] Natalie McMillan: And I'm Natalie McMillan.

[:

[00:00:17] Natalie McMillan: And each week we cover a new topic and we drink a new bottle of wine.

[:

and how to quit. Yo job. We're going to be talking about the great resignation and why so many people are quitting their jobs. When is the right time to leave a bad job and how to leave a job respectfully and on good terms. That's

[:

[00:00:54] Corinne Foxx: also feel like so many people are like, I'm going to quit my job and then they never do.

So this is for you. If you've been saying it for the last six months in annoying your partner and your friends, and you're just like, just do it. Like you need to leave for you, you guys. And at the end of the episode, we're playing fuck marry, kill, which is a crowded. I got to think of mine. I'm very excited for you.

Where's Natalie. It is tailored to you. Okay. So now what are we drinking this episode?

[:

Charles Smith. It's very John DOE.

[:

Oh, my goodness. Scribe our wine. Well,

[:

[00:02:12] Corinne Foxx: want to be taught. Like I don't want to just go away. I want to go to a class. That's

[:

[00:02:20] Corinne Foxx: random hipster in

[:

Right. But like, they would probably be like, oh, I love to give them a class. Cause you know, they all love talking about it. Yeah. I need, I need, I need a class love talking about the. And the lactic fermentation or whatever. That's what I'm saying. Yeah.

[:

Remember that one time we tried more words in it. Interesting was just the best

[:

[00:02:47] Corinne Foxx: Oh, that doesn't describe anything to the listeners.

[:

[00:02:55] Corinne Foxx: immersive Rudy

[:

You love, that's why he's pleasant

[:

[00:03:07] Natalie McMillan: been a sighting. You know what we're about to say, guys, there's been

[:

It's been about, it's been about six months. It's been six months. I saw him at the, uh, right.

[:

[00:03:27] Corinne Foxx: I saw him at the Spiderman when I tripped.

[:

[00:03:36] Corinne Foxx: that we were at a music festival and Joe goes in the bathroom and he obviously knows of this G-Eazy recurrent simulation thing.

And he walks out. Jeez, he's in the bathroom Corinne and I go, of course he is. And then she goes, and then he goes, I just thought about the time that I was with

[:

[00:03:51] Corinne Foxx: you were like, make it a move on G-Eazy and tripped. And I was like, yeah. And he goes, what did you say? I said, I go, um, I said, I said, I was just looking at you.

[:

[00:04:11] Corinne Foxx: but then I went, uh, we went out to the crowd and then we saw him standing there so tall. You can't miss anything tall and skinny. And like, and Joe was like, oh, he's right over there. And I was like, there he is, again, there he is. And so I'll see him in probably about six months from now

[:

Yeah. It'll be like new years. I bet. Around new year's Christmas time. Right around that time. Jesus. Um, I,

[:

[00:04:43] Natalie McMillan: not

[:

So I was talking to Joe and we saw GEC and then I realized, oh, there's another glitch in our game. Right. Like in the little game, they kind of fucked up because we're standing at a music festival, right. To see Billie Eilish and Conan O'Brien is in the crowd. So I'm thinking this makes no sense. No, he's wearing a cowboy hat.

It was so many things that didn't make sense. I go, Joe, they fucked up this. They, they, they dropped in the wrong character and they were like, who the fuck? It's too late. She already put them. I'll be happy to leave him there. No, yes. He's supposed to be in nanny. No, honestly,

[:

It was so odd. And I just,

[:

[00:05:27] Natalie McMillan: kids, no clothes

[:

[00:05:35] Natalie McMillan: know. I'm trying to think of a recent glitch that I had experienced and I, it just seems everything is too on the nose.

It's

[:

[00:05:50] Natalie McMillan: or for example, and I'm not going to name names. Cause I don't know if I can, but we have a friend who works for a large celebrity. Yes, physically. Yes. Just in figuratively. And he showed up at our other friends, horse race, what, and know roommates and the two events.

One of the biggest celebrities

[:

[00:06:21] Natalie McMillan: celebrities there. And the girl on the horse, our friend on the horse is roommates. The friend that works for the large celebrity, it's just doesn't

[:

There's too many things that are, that have to happen for the likelihood of that to happen. There's not enough characters, they're not, and they keep recycling them. And then we're like, guys, I would love to run into a different celebrity. That's not cheesy me too. And I love Jeezy. I know, but I've seen him about 12 times in

[:

Something's wrong. Right?

[:

my

[:

[00:07:07] Corinne Foxx: to when and how to quit your job facts. Let's get some facts in. Okay. So according to CB, News of the countries, approximately 100 million full-time employees.

51% are engaged in. Damn meaning they feel no real connection to their jobs. And thus, they tend to do the bare minimum. Another 16% are quote unquote, actively disengage. So they resent their jobs. They tend to gripe with their coworkers and drag down office morale as a result. So views about work are sharply defined.

Along socioeconomic lines. And the sense of vulnerability is also acute among workers with no college education and lower than average household incomes. And actually there is a strong correlation between race, ethnicity, gender, and. Uh, quality. So black working people are twice as likely to be in bad jobs compared to white working people.

And it's even more pronounced for black women.

[:

[00:08:22] Corinne Foxx: So we're actually actually in this time right now, that's called the great resignation. People are, people are up and leaving. Everybody is

[:

Mall men, deer, maybe it's small men, da maybe, oh, my friend knows. He suggests that there's something existential behind the great resignation, the pandemic and the rise of remote work have changed the way we view our lives and the world. Yeah. I, here I am.

[:

Yeah,

like,

[:

Am I now? Am I doing this right? Am I doing this way? I doing this life thing. Right? So according to USA today, Americans quit at a record pace in November, 2021. As job openings, hovered, close to their all time highs and assign that workers continue to hold most of the leverage before the AMI Cron, a variant sent good old Corona cases.

Soaring. During this time a record shattering hold for dramatic. 47.4 million people left their jobs.

[:

[00:10:01] Natalie McMillan: according to the Harvard business review, these are the six signs that you should take into consideration.

When wondering if you should leave your job first. It's no longer encouraging your growth. Anything that we do routinely eventually will stop us from growing, even think about athletes in their training. So if they don't switch up their workouts, they lose strength in certain areas of their bodies. With that being said, reinvigorating, your work can be as simple as seeing it differently and modifying it in small ways.

Something often referred to as job crafting, but if you've exhausted that path and you're no longer growing in your. I have a time to move on.

[:

[00:10:42] Natalie McMillan: next. Yeah. So if you're just like, I've tried to make this better, I've tried to reinvigorate and I can't, I mean, maybe it's time to go. The second sign is you've achieved.

What you set out to achieve. Sometimes you might lag growth in your current position because there's nothing left to aspire to you. Might've accomplished what you set out to achieve and no longer have any drive to remain in that position. Understandable third, you actively look for ways to avoid your job, even if you love the work that you do, you might just need a break from it.

Oftentimes it's necessary to take a temporary or permanent break. A profession should be something we approach with curiosity and anticipation, not avoidance. So if you find yourself trying to do anything, but the work in front of. It might be time to move on. Let's just say, if you're doing dishes and folding laundry before sending emails, like if you're doing the chores you hate the most before.

Oh, you're like a non and I

[:

[00:11:49] Natalie McMillan: Yeah. So if you were avoiding your job that way, it would be time to move

[:

So if you regularly feel dread at approaching your work, it's time to seriously consider changing it or leaving it behind your life is short and precious and your work should enrich it. I think that's that

[:

[00:12:15] Corinne Foxx: like burnout. That's so common. This is a sidebar, but even I've been feeling some burnout with what I'm doing and I'm like, I've got to choose my own boss.

So I'm like, I've got a Jane, Jane,

[:

[00:12:30] Corinne Foxx: reinvigorating. Another sign that it's time to quit. Your job is that it's causing you to develop bad habits. Ooh, that's a big one. So with our careers, Or even just side jobs, being such an integral part of our lives, it can be easy to become influenced by the culture at work.

So for example, in the Harvard business review article, the author wrote quote, a friend of mine worked at a company whose culture was toxic and he found himself. Even when he was away from work behaving in ways he would have previously found unethical or inappropriate, he found himself being untruthful, for example, and misleading colleagues and clients.

And when he recognized this, he immediately left the firm. Wow. So bottom line, if you feel as if your job is making you someone that your younger self wouldn't want you to be, it's time to go. That is so much self-awareness because you do get influenced by the people you're around and like, you know, and if everyone else is doing it then, and everyone else is treating you that way, then you treat people back.

But to be able to stop and be like, I don't like who

[:

[00:13:42] Corinne Foxx: Like emotional. I don't know why I didn't

[:

[00:13:46] Corinne Foxx: six. So the six sign that you should quit, your job is that your workplace has become unhealthy. Toxic workplaces are unfortunately not uncommon.

So if you find yourself in a job where you were being. Poorly or Everett and suffering any sort of emotional or verbal abuse. Get out, get out next that bitch immediately. No one deserves to be treated in a harmful way at work, especially our baby. Am I not, am I not, not the Amies comment for you. Yeah.

We'll come in, you know,

[:

[00:14:24] Corinne Foxx: Aries moon, the two of us with our. Did I

[:

Why? Oh, I mean, I could really get into it, but basically also I'm just going to straight up, call it out. This was at. Okay, Jody. No, it was a restaurant I'd never been to Wally's Wally's wine bar. Her name was, should I say her name? Don't don't say that, Natalie, but I was very mad because the way she treated us was absolutely appalling.

Absolutely bullying. Oh, wow. Anyways, activator, Aries moon is active, a Ted and I will get the same way if anybody treats Martin. Wrong. We do want to reiterate here that unless you're sacrificing your morals are in a toxic work environment. It is possible to make some changes, to enjoy your work again. At the very least, you may just straight up need a vacation.

If you can take some time off to reflect on what you really want. And if your job is truly no longer serving you. If a vacation is not in the cards for you right now, consider talking to your manager or boss and ask them about maybe a title, position switch, or some sort of small tweak to your current position that could make your work feel more

[:

Yeah. And we, we will do an episode one day about like how to negotiate. Like I think we should do an episode on like how to ask for a raise, how to ask for emotion. And we will do that because that is also an option before you quit, you know, like,

[:

We're going to try to reinvigorate.

[:

[00:16:18] Natalie McMillan: say, somebody's listening to this and they're like, yeah, no, it's time for me to go. There's nothing too big. Nothing to invigorate here. How do we, the prep

[:

Do a financial checkup first. So obviously the safest route is, you know, have another job lined up right before you quit. And many people really can't do it any other way, but if you plan on jumping without knowing where you're going to land, you should start by figuring out how much it costs you to live.

Yes. It's scaling. Yeah. So number one, make a list of your non-negotiable monthly expenses. So your mortgage, your rent, your food, your utilities, insurance, car payments, debt childcare, all of it. Yes. So an a list of the things that you cannot do without. So if you don't already have an emergency fund, you should have at least three to six months worth of expense.

Saved up and we have an episode on savings accounts. That's amazing. We

[:

[00:17:22] Corinne Foxx: Yeah. So number two is to tally up vacation time bonuses and more so check to see how much vacation or other paid time off you have. Not yet used and may be owed and whether it can still be used or paid out.

So that can have. Cushion your job search fund. Like if they kind of owe you a few days, you can kind of put that bank that also be sure to know when other perks, including bonuses may be paid out or become available such as soon to be vested stock options. Okay. So

[:

[00:17:58] Corinne Foxx: Keep your eye on that.

[:

Point blank period, because also you might, you know, you're going to be starting over with a new deductible. You might have like not the same access to your doctor as a whole mess. So definitely plan. Also understand your retirement plan. Are you borrowing money from your 401k or 4 0 3 B retirement plan?

You may have to pay it back.

[:

[00:18:52] Natalie McMillan: Otherwise the balance may be treated as a taxable distribution with a 10% penalty.

But usually that's if you're under 55, but yeah, 10% penalty. So now that we've prepped to quit, how do we actually Ooh,

[:

Notice it's her. And it's. And she's his personal assistant and he's like such a fucking asshole to her. So she finally like puts in her two weeks notice. But of course, during those two weeks they fall off. Oh my God. It's so good.

[:

[00:19:40] Corinne Foxx: movie. I don't like, oh, it's fabulous. Okay. I got Sandra public rates.

Sandra Bullock? No, I'm just making sure that's her in the movie. It's either her or

[:

[00:19:57] Corinne Foxx: Sandra Bullock and Hugh grant and she is his assistant and she gives her two weeks notice,

[:

Every Hugh grant movie is him falling in love with something. Like, cause then also in, um, what's the Christmas, he's

[:

[00:20:13] Natalie McMillan: in that.

[:

[00:20:21] Natalie McMillan: I know. And I cannot think of the name

[:

[00:20:34] Natalie McMillan: sign up. But he falls in love with like a peasant. You know what I mean? He's always falling and love with people that are he played

[:

True. He plays the lovable Dick. Wait,

[:

[00:20:51] Corinne Foxx: is. He's the prime minister. Love actually love actually was actually, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Okay.

[:

You

[:

So now. In a toxic job situation. And you're concerned that your boss may have a, like belligerent reaction to your quitting or threatened to retaliate against you for leaving Mandy Woodruff Santos, who is a career and wealth builder. We're in New York city recommends reaching out to HR first, a smart, he says, explain why you're reaching out and that you want to be respectful and turn in your two weeks notice, but you would feel more secure if you had someone with you when you turn in your notice to your manager.

Yeah. That makes sense. So, you know, if you have to, you have to, if you gotta, you

[:

If you want, you can even use a resignation letter generator from legal zoom or rocket lawyer, which I think we'll, we'll tag that in the show notes. That's in the show notes. Bon our vice-president of global talent acquisition for the job search site indeed says, this is a quote, it's a nice touch. If you give your HR and supervisor feedback about why you're leaving and how they can improve the work culture for future team members and existing employees,

[:

Yeah, you guys can do this.

[:

[00:23:01] Corinne Foxx: Another thing to do when you're quitting is it's a nurture your relationships after you've alerted your managers. And HR about your plans, inform the people you've built relationships with, perhaps over coffee or lunch, your last two weeks in a job, or your final chance to leave a positive mark and a lasting impression on your colleagues.

And they might move to another company and you might move to an, and like you might be working, you know, like you're on the same field. And if you can't. Leave on good terms with everybody. Yes. You're

[:

But if you're offered an exit interview, it can be a good place to start to air. Any concerns you may have, especially if you've got fears about retaliate.

[:

You can be like, I was scared that was going to happen.

[:

[00:23:57] Corinne Foxx: writing. And another thing you can do when you are quitting, your job is to follow up. So once you've settled into your new job, consider emailing your former boss colleagues. You know, maybe even a thank you note, like thank you so much.

I've moved here. Vicky Salemi, a career expert for the job site. Monster says the gesture is a nice way to close this chapter, to thank them for something specific, like working on a project together, you know, comment on anything you've enjoyed and comment outside of work and more, you may also want to provide your contact information if they don't already have it in case any questions arise and also just like offer, if you want to like.

There's any questions for like the person replacing you? Like you're happy to guide them. Just be nice if

[:

[00:24:44] Corinne Foxx: Bye bye. So now what if you quit your job and then

[:

And I think, I guess it's because it felt like everybody's doing it so like I'm going to do it. Right. Interesting. Kathryn Minshew CEO of the career site muse described the trend as a quote unquote shift shock saying. They'll join a new company, thinking it's their dream job. And then there's a reality check.

Basically it didn't live up to the expectations and hype of the great resignation. She suggests that before resigning, take some time to analyze your situation and map out a well-thought thorough plan. AKA, listen to this episode over again, speak with career coaches, mentors, trusted peers, recruiters, and people whose judgment you value to share your feelings about moving on.

Gather some market intelligence. Insight. If you choose to leave in the end and still regret your decision, remember that more jobs are out there and you have every right to leave a job that is unfulfilling. Even if you just started it, it's time. We stop putting our jobs above our happiness as humans.

Because life is simply too short. I'm just laughing because I have a new assistant today's her first day and she just left her old job, but I'm like, Julissa, please don't leave me. She's like, yeah,

[:

[00:26:20] Natalie McMillan: this is my two weeks notice.

No, you can totally leave if you want to wake up. Okay.

[:

[00:26:38] Natalie McMillan: I know it's summer though. It's summer.

[:

Probably won't get the reference that's okay. But if you do, gosh, we love, yeah. We just

[:

[00:27:03] Corinne Foxx: a character on arrested development named Joe, but Joe, which we just similar to job. Yeah. So that's why he's

[:

Then the running joke on arrested development is that it's spelled like gob. Yeah. It's gob. Yeah. So that's why we chose. And Hey, we love will Arnett. We love wilderness. So we're comparing this wine, which is the substance Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia valley, 2019. And it's it's by that Charles Smith character.

That's not a real person then they're good. Old Chaz Smith. What's your rating. I'm not mad about it. I usually don't like cabs and I'm down for that. I'm

[:

[00:27:43] Natalie McMillan: Why not give

[:

[00:27:48] Natalie McMillan: will. Arnett will Arnett out and will our nap, but also a joke.

[:

All right. This is the part of the episode. We play a little wrap up game, and this week we are playing. Fuck, marry, kill.

[:

[00:28:09] Corinne Foxx: feel very confident about mine. Do you want me to go? Maybe it'll give you some inspiration. Okay. All right, Natalie. Okay.

Hold on. It's a personal attack. I was driving and I pulled over to write this in my phone because I thought of it. I was like, this is the best one. God. Oh, I'm nervous. Fuck. Marry. Kill Natalie

[:

[00:28:33] Corinne Foxx: products, vintage tees.

[:

[00:28:41] Corinne Foxx: Oh, shorts, shimmery products.

Anything that shimmers shack. Oh, or a vintage tea.

[:

[00:28:52] Corinne Foxx: like a, like I'm

[:

I mean, you have to marry jorts. There are a huge part of my life, always in forever. Um, man.

I can't kill. I can't kill a vintage tee. So I'm going to have to fuck a vintage tee and I'm going to have the Gill, a shimmering product, which makes me actually sad. I feel sadness. I've reassured

[:

[00:29:32] Natalie McMillan: should, but like I can't kill a vintage tea.

What are you going to wear? Exactly. What else do I have? Nothing. The only things I have are my jorts and my teeth. Yeah,

[:

[00:29:44] Natalie McMillan: life. Oh, wow. That was really hard. Okay. In the same sort of vein of things that you love, it's not as deep as mine. Those were deep cuts, but, and these are theater scattered.

These are random. Fuck. Marry, kill. Joe's Ratatouille the color yellow. So you would never be able to see it again. If you kill it. Or all of your meditation apps? Hmm.

[:

It is incredible. I dream about it. I literally begged him to make it for me. Okay. So it was just ready to eat it. I think you've talked about it on the podcast, a meditation app or, um, the color yellow I'm going to, I have to. Okay. I have to marry Jo's Ratatouille. I have to, I have to have it in my life for the rest of my life forever.

So that

[:

[00:30:48] Corinne Foxx: That's really what this is. So we're going to marry the Ratatouille. I'm going to fuck the meditation app and I'm going to kill the color yellow and I love yellow, yellow.

[:

[00:31:01] Corinne Foxx: love. I love yellow.

[:

[00:31:10] Corinne Foxx: though. Also I so weird. I've had this weird relationship with purple recently. Do I like purple, but you're not

[:

[00:31:22] Corinne Foxx: purple?

Um, not that I feel like I'm in more in my mind, yellows and oranges.

[:

[00:31:33] Corinne Foxx: I might be.

[:

[00:31:41] Corinne Foxx: I need those. Yeah. Yeah. I'm going to need those, the need that I need to hit it and quit it about once a day.

[:

[00:31:50] Corinne Foxx: done deal. Well, have you guys done, if you guys like this episode, you can feel free to rate and review the podcast on apple podcasts, or you can write in if you guys want us to cover, not only what are you doing, Natalie dropped something.

She's drinking water. She's doing the loudest things possible. I'm trying to

[:

[00:32:19] Corinne Foxx: us to write an episode, if you want to, what is wrong with us? If you want to pitch us an episode that you would like us to

[:

[00:32:30] Corinne Foxx: email us at, am I doing this right pod?

You can DMS at, am I doing this right pod? And we got to go. We'll be back next
