:I'm Stephanie Hickox.
3
:Today we'll discuss I Chronicles
25 and several of Davids Psalms in
4
:I Chronicles 25, David continues
to organize and assign the roles
5
:needed for service in the temple,
6
:there are about 4,000 instrumentalists
assigned, and you may notice a couple of
7
:references to these musicians prophesying.
8
:A good definition for the prophesying
done here is proclaiming the truth,
9
:and they were doing it through music
10
:Verse seven confirms that David required
those that were skillful and trained.
11
:Remember, he's a musician himself
12
:Throughout the Psalms, we're told to make
a joyful noise to the Lord And we're not
13
:exempt even if we can't carry a tune But
those that were leading in the temple
14
:We're gifted by the Lord to do so
15
:I realize this is another chapter full of
names, but it stood out to me how often
16
:the phrase, and his sons and his brothers.
17
:These families were doing ministry
together, and I'm sure I'm not alone
18
:that that's a thought and a hope
I've had that maybe my kids would
19
:someday serve the Lord together
20
:Let's turn to Psalm 131.
21
:This Psalm of David is brief,
but the verses are so tender,
22
:especially for a mom's heart
23
:" Oh Lord, my heart is not lifted up.
24
:My eyes are not raised too high.
25
:I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
26
:But I have calmed and quieted my soul
like a weaned child with its mother.
27
:Like a weaned child is my soul within me.
28
:Oh, Israel, hope in the Lord from
this time forth and forevermore."
29
:When I think back to comforting my
babies, when I would hear them give
30
:that deep sigh of relief as they rested
their head on my shoulder, it's one
31
:of the best feelings in the world.
32
:Here David is saying our trust in the
Lord can bring such peace to our heart
33
:That we can know my dad's got it.
34
:When there's so much information
available to us, we can often get
35
:caught up in searching out solutions
and answers and thinking that God
36
:requires our vigilance in an area.
37
:But this chapter also cautions us that
sometimes there are problems we can't
38
:solve, and we need to trust in the Lord
and surrender to Him These are some verses
39
:I'm gonna call to mind again when I
feel my mind racing and going ahead of
40
:where the Lord has called me to focus
41
:These are some verses that stood out
to me in Psalm 138, also written by
42
:David: " I bow down toward your holy
temple and give thanks to your name for
43
:your steadfast love and your faithfulness.
44
:For you have exalted above all
things your name and your word.
45
:On the day I called, you answered me.
46
:My strength of soul you increased."
47
:We can rejoice at the ways God
has protected His Word, and that
48
:there is no other name under
heaven by which we must be saved
49
:and we can be confident that the
Lord will give us the strength
50
:to do what He's calling us to do
51
:The chapter concludes, " The Lord
will fulfill His purpose for me.
52
:Your steadfast love, O
Lord, endures forever.
53
:Do not forsake the work of Your hands."
54
:Does that remind you of when Paul
writes in Philippians that, "He who
55
:began a good work in you will be
faithful to complete it until the day of
56
:Christ Jesus"?
57
:Psalm 139 is one of
the most quoted psalms.
58
:And as much as I delight to dig for
treasure amongst the verses that are
59
:often neglected, I can't deny that
this psalm is infamous for a reason.
60
:I'm gonna read it in its entirety
61
:because as Betsy unfolds in Entrusted
with a Child's Heart, this chapter
62
:is pivotal for our understanding
63
:of the sanctity of life
And the way we as believers
64
:should value and protect all
of God's creation, beginning
65
:from the point of conception
66
:As I read, notice how David meditates
on God's omniscience, which means that
67
:He is all-knowing, His omnipresence,
which is the fact that He is
68
:everywhere, and His omnipotence,
which means that God is all-powerful.
69
:O Lord, you have searched me and known me.
70
:You know when I sit
down and when I rise up.
71
:You discern my thoughts from afar.
72
:You search out my path and my lying down,
and are acquainted with all my ways.
73
:Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
74
:You hem me in behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
75
:Such knowledge is too wonderful for
me; it is high, I cannot attain it.
76
:Where shall I go from your Spirit?
77
:Or where shall I flee from your presence?
78
:If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if
I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
79
:If I take the wings of the morning and
dwell in the uttermost parts of the
80
:sea, even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me If
81
:I say, surely the darkness shall cover
me, and the light about me be night,
82
:even the darkness is not dark to you.
83
:The night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you.
84
:For you formed my inward parts.
85
:You knitted me together
in my mother's womb.
86
:I praise you, for I am
fearfully and wonderfully made.
87
:Wonderful are your works.
88
:My soul knows it very well.
89
:My frame was not hidden from you when
I was being made in secret, Intricately
90
:woven in the depths of the earth.
91
:Your eyes saw my unformed substance.
92
:I awake, and I am still with you.
93
:Oh, that you would slay the wicked, O God.
94
:O men of blood, depart from me.
95
:They speak against you
with malicious intent.
96
:Your enemies take your name in vain.
97
:Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord?
98
:And do I not loathe those
who rise up against you?
99
:I hate them with complete hatred.
100
:I count them my enemies.
101
:Search me, O God, and know my heart.
102
:Try me and know my thoughts And see
if there be any grievous way in me
103
:and lead me in the way everlasting
104
:After a lengthy meditation
105
:On God's attributes and the care
with which He took to create us.
106
:David rebukes those who
speak against the Lord.
107
:He has that righteous
indignation we talked about.
108
:How wrong it is for God to love us so
deeply and so perfectly, and for Him to
109
:be treated so hatefully by His creation
110
:But I love the way the Psalm ends, that
David, after saying that God knows all
111
:things and that he can't hide from God,
asks the Lord to search him, convict him
112
:of his sin, and lead him in righteousness.
113
:When we are aware of God's love for us, we
don't run in shame But we can run to Him
114
:Desiring to be refined by His
perfecting love When it mentions
115
:that we were formed in the depths of
the earth, this isn't a geographical
116
:term, but it refers to the womb
117
:life matters to God
118
:From that first moment of conception.
119
:I delight in verses 17 and 18 that
declare that God's thoughts toward us
120
:are innumerable and cannot be counted.
121
:And lest you think that this
is a poetic device, let me
122
:read what Spurgeon had to say.
123
:" This is not the hyperbole of poetry, but
the solid fact of an inspired statement.
124
:God thinks of us infinitely.
125
:There is a limit to the act of creation,
but not to the might of divine love."
126
:This is true of the frequency of God's
thoughts about you and your kids.
127
:And when we have a right view of the Lord
and His love for us, it makes it easier
128
:to have our hearts quieted like a child,
as we read about in Psalm 131, doesn't it?
129
:Speaker 58: But I want us to be careful
that even as we focus on God's intricate
130
:care and love for us, that we don't
walk away thinking it's all about us
131
:We were made with purpose and intention,
but our ultimate goal is to bring
132
:glory to this majestic creator.
133
:Steph: As we move on to Psalm
144, there's a verse I hadn't
134
:noticed until I interviewed the
delightful Grace Anna Castleberry.
135
:She wrote a wonderful book called A
Vision for Motherhood, and she was on
136
:our Again podcast, which I'll link to
137
:She inspired me to think more about
verse 12, which says, " May our sons in
138
:their youth be like plants full-grown,
our daughters like corner pillars
139
:cut for the structure of a palace
140
:This verse is saying, even from their
youth may our boys be like strong trees.
141
:Can you picture them like a solid
oak tree so rooted in the Lord?
142
:And our daughters like a pillar
in a palace, which would indeed be
143
:beautiful and intentionally crafted.
144
:But as this verse indicates, it
was important for the structural
145
:integrity of the building as well.
146
:Grace Anna explained that God calls
our men to be strong and to stand
147
:firm, walking in self-control.
148
:And women are often the glue
that holds families together.
149
:They're essential it reminds
me of one of our first episodes
150
:when I explained that God took a
part of Adam's side to make Eve.
151
:That word for side in the Hebrew is
the same word that's used when
152
:referring to the side of the temple
153
:This word denotes worship and necessity
154
:we wanna see the Lord training our sons
to bring strength and courage, and our
155
:daughters to bring unity and support.
156
:They're equal but unique roles
157
:Another verse we're particularly fond
of and interested is from Psalm 145.
158
:Verse four says, " One generation
shall commend your works to another
159
:and shall declare your mighty acts."
160
:The Psalm talks about how
creation itself speaks
161
:But David repeatedly declares
162
:that he will proclaim the
works of the Lord as well
163
:and that God uses these methods
to speak to the children of man.
164
:Verses 18 through 20 tell us, " The
Lord is near to all who call on Him,
165
:to all who call on Him in truth.
166
:He fulfills the desire of
those who fear Him; He also
167
:hears their cry and saves them.
168
:The Lord preserves all who love Him,
but the wicked He will destroy."
169
:These are beautiful promises for
those that rightly evaluate their
170
:hearts, Walking in the fear of
God and loving Him above all else
171
:And for our prayer today, we're gonna
use Psalm 145 for wisdom and guidance.
172
:And if you're like me, this is
one of the biggest things you
173
:pray for as you parent your kids.
174
:Hear our prayer, O Lord, and
give ear to our pleas for mercy.
175
:In your faithfulness, answer us.
176
:no one living is righteous before you.
177
:So we pray for your mercy answer us
quickly, O Lord, when our spirit fails.
178
:Hide not your face from us.
179
:Let us hear in the morning of your
steadfast love, for in you we trust
180
:Make us to know the way we should
go, for to you we lift up our soul.
181
:Teach us to do your will,
for you are our God.
182
:Let your good spirit
lead us on level ground.
183
:For your namesake, O Lord, preserve
our lives, and in your righteousness
184
:bring our soul out of troubles
185
:Lord, we are desperate for your wisdom
and your guidance to order our days well
186
:and to make decisions for our families.
187
:We thank you that you offer your spirit
to lead us in the way we should go
188
:I pray as David did that you would
search us and know us so that
189
:when we are praying for wisdom, we
can have pure motives before you.
190
:That your namesake and your glory
is our every aim and expectation.
191
:And we pray that even when we're weary,
our mouths would consistently praise you
192
:And set this model for our families.
193
:It's in the name that is above every
name, Jesus Christ, that we pray.
194
:Amen.
