You'll hear from the best minds in marketing who will share tactics, quick wins, and pitfalls to avoid. Also, dig into life, pop culture, and the chaos that is our everyday. I'm Jay Schwedelson. Let's do this, not that.
Jay Schwedelson:We are here for Ask Us Anything from the do this not that podcast presented by Marigold. This is our super short episode where we answer a work question and a ridiculous question because we get these questions in all week long.
And if you want to submit a question that would be amazing, just go to jweddelson.com there's a button that says podcast, another button that says ask us anything. And we love it. That's what we need to. To do all this stuff. All right, so we got this question in. Let's first do the work question.
We got a work question from Davey from Dublin, Ireland. Love it. We're going global. I've been to Dublin Island. I will never forget.
I went there and I stayed in a hostel and I spent $9 a night for two nights. $9 a night, right. You could imagine. And I was in this. They put you in this room where you're with, like, I guess all these other travelers.
That was, like, I don't know, 20 of us in this room on these weird bunk beds. And it was the most bizarre two nights ever because the people in there were out of their minds. A lot of them were just hammered and just weird.
I mean, that's what you get for $9 a night. And I met some funky people. I was just happy to get out of there alive. I mean, I did not like sleeping in that situation, but here I am. I survived.
Dublin's great, by the way. I mean, incredible. Anyway, what's up, Davey? Okay, Jay. I see a lot of people growing their LinkedIn following really fast.
Are there tricks to that that may be off the radar? Well, growing your LinkedIn does take a lot of effort, but I think that there's one thing that almost everybody doesn't take advantage of.
And it's kind of a massive game changer on LinkedIn. If you really want to stay in front of everybody you're connected with and really grow your LinkedIn. So what is that? Okay, so on our.
On every one of our LinkedIn profiles, you know your page about you, there's the experience section on our profiles.
And this is the section where you list the job that you have and the jobs that you've had, you know, previously, it's kind of like your resume section, right? But this actually is the secret sauce area of LinkedIn and can change everything for you. Sorry. Here's the deal.
When you put something in the experience section, you have the option to allow a notification to go out to your entire network, okay? And then when you create the post about that new thing.
So let's say you were changing your job, you create that post, and it goes out to your entire network. It has the highest circulation within the LinkedIn algorithm of anything else that you can do. And listen, we've all seen that, right?
You've all seen that, like, so and so, got a new job. I'm so excited to share. I got a new job. And then you see a lot of those.
Okay, but here's the thing that people sleep on that they don't realize you can put anything in the experience section. It doesn't have to be a new job. Okay? Yeah.
You already see people putting in things like, let's say they got a certification, you know, a new HubSpot certification or Google Ad certification, whatever. Or maybe they got a promotion. It's not a new job. They got went from director to vice president or whatever. That's not what I'm talking about.
Because, yeah, that's going to circulate your whole network, but this is the way you beat the algorithm. Let's say, for example, you go into your experience section, you say, hey, I just attended this webinar. I learned these four things.
And then you tag the company of the webinar that you just attended. And. And you post that in your experience section. And that notification goes out to your entire network. And that post goes out to your entire network.
on a new thing personally for:I'm working on this new skill. I'm going to try to become a better writer. I'm going to try to become better at search ads, whatever.
is going to be your focus for:Maybe it's an internal project you just completed and you want to share the details about some campaign that you just ran and some of the performance. You can list that as an experience, okay? Or let's say you plan on attending a conference or an event, a virtual conference or an event.
You can list that and say, these are the five things I'm most excited about. These are the speakers I'm most excited about leveraging that experience area and then allowing your entire network to get notified about it.
This is how you beat the algorithm. Because when you do it, you can change the picture, right? You could have it be whatever picture you want.
You could write whatever copy you want, and then it gets circulated everywhere, okay? And then listen, if you don't want to have that staying on your experience section because you're like, this is weird.
Why is this in my experience section? After a week, just erase it.
Get rid of that experience, and you can change the order of experiences on in that section on your profile so you can still keep your job, your main job that you have as your top experience. Then move all these other random ones down. It's super easy.
All you have to do to make sure everyone gets notified when you do this is you click on the picture yourself, you click on the me icon on the LinkedIn homepage, then you go to Settings, then you look for visibility, okay? And then you, you make sure that when you share your profile updates, it's turned on. I know some of you listening, like, what?
What is he talking about? What is this nonsense? That's like a gimmick. That's like a hack on LinkedIn. Listen, you want to stay in front of your network, right?
You want to do things where you stand out.
You want to do things where you're in communication, not with the 12 people that always like your posts, but with the people you haven't spoken to in a year, two years, three years. This tactic is it. This is how you get in front of all those people you connected with that have forgotten that you exist.
I've done this tactic, for example, already 10 times this year. Already 10 times this year. I do it almost once a month, okay? Because why not? It doesn't cost you anything. You don't get anything.
Nothing negative happens. Anyway, before we get into the ridiculous question, I want to let you know that this podcast is exclusively presented by Marigold.
Marigold is my email sending platform. This is a fantastic platform, but it's not just good for email sending and it's not just good for consumer or business, any company size.
It is also all about relationship marketing and loyalty programs.
So they have this new report, they came out, okay, it is called the brand ranking report and it's free and you can get it@jeddelson.com Marigold this thing is wild because they analyzed real brands like Adidas and Chewy and Disney and over 200 brands. And they break down literally each brand and how they are doing their loyalty marketing and their relationship marketing and they score each brand.
This thing is bananas. You want to download this thing? Okay. It's Marigold's relationship marketing brand report. Okay. So you go to jayshwedelson.com Marigold. It is free.
It is awesome. It's only going to be up there for a little bit. We're get, we're taking it down very shortly. Check that out.
All right, let's get into the ridiculous question. We got a question in from Kristen from San Diego. What's going on? San Diego. Love San Diego. All right, Jay, what's your question?
Jay, you talk way too much about reality tv. Oh, thank you very much. Do you watch anything besides for reality tv? Yes, I do. I take exception with this question.
I watch everything because I have no life. Of course I do. All right, so for example, right now I'm in the middle of watching Nobody wants this.
That's that new rom com on Netflix with Adam Brody and Kristen Bell. Everybody hyped this thing up. I know. It's like I got a zillion people watching it. It's good.
It's nowhere near as good as everybody says, but everybody's into it. So I'm in the middle of that. I just finished watching the whole Menendez thing. Monsters on Netflix. I mean, that's not reality tv.
I don't, I mean it, I mean, disturbing. It is really disturbing. Like, what did I, I, I couldn't stop watching. I don't even know why, but that was so. That's not reality TV.
I'm very excited on October 16th for shrinking two season to come out. That's going to be great. That's with what's his name, Jason Siegel and Harrison Ford. Great show. If you didn't see season one.
And then in terms of reality, not reality TV stuff, I want to go to the movies. I really like going to the movies. There's nothing in the movie theater. And I was like, okay, cool.
I'm going to go see Joker too, because I love the first Joker. But I watched all the trailers. It couldn't have a worse reviews. I mean, it is getting listed as the worst movie of all time. So I'm out on Joker too.
So anybody that's got good movie theater recommendations, I want good movies primarily because I want to eat snow caps, which I don't eat anywhere else. And I want to eat popcorn. And that's it. Maybe I should just go watch previews. I don't know. Anyway, please put in new questions into Ask us anything.
We love that. Please go. And make sure you register for Guru Conference. It is days away, the world's largest email marketing event. It is free. It is virtual.
I cannot wait. It's going to be wild. All right, see you there. Thanks for being here. Leave this thing a review later.
