Shownotes
Sea shanty songs have recently gone viral on social media. Revell Carr, associate professor of ethnomusicology at the University of Kentucky, gives us some background on sea shanties. We hear the history of how they came to be, what purpose they served, and why sea shanties resonate now. Revell Carr is the author of the book Hawaiian Music in Motion: Mariners, Missionaries, and Minstrels so we're also going to hear some bonus Hawaiian history and maritime history. Most importantly, Revell performs a famous sea ballad called "The Mermaid."
