Speaker:Part of the purpose of Pride is solidarity,
Speaker:between all the different expressions of queer personhood.
Speaker:It’s vital, having endured discrimination ourselves,
Speaker:that we avoid learning to discriminate against those who stand beside us, our family, our allies against the same discrimination.
Speaker:So we present an object lesson,

Please enjoy:“How it Pans Out”
Please enjoy:by Kergiby I stare at my reflection in the dented brass doorknob.
Please enjoy:I can feel my paw pads itch.
Please enjoy:I want to open that door and get this all over with.
Please enjoy:This burning, looming threat of confrontations that I’ve worked so hard to avoid.
Please enjoy:I know I have to do it.
Please enjoy:I’ve been wanting to have this conversation for years,
Please enjoy:I knew it would happen sooner or later.
Please enjoy:It’s time, I have to open my mouth
Please enjoy:and ruin everything I’ve built. And
Please enjoy:yet… I want to run. I’ve
Please enjoy:put off this conversation for so long for a reason.
Please enjoy:There’s a reason I’ve never confronted Miles before.
Please enjoy:There’s a reason I’ve taken
Please enjoy:every comment, every barb,
Please enjoy:every poor joke. I’m a coward.
Please enjoy:I’m a coward who can’t even stick up for himself because I’m too afraid of what will happen.
Please enjoy:I grab the handle and squeeze.
Please enjoy:Then I pull back and grab my antlers,
Please enjoy:grunting in frustration and pace the hall outside of our apartment.
Please enjoy:What the hell am I doing? I
Please enjoy:knew I was bi when I was still just a kid. I
Please enjoy:found myself drawn to the heroes in the movies and TV shows that I was supposed to ascribe to be like.
Please enjoy:I didn’t want to be the heroes,
Please enjoy:I wanted to be with them.
Please enjoy:I wanted to be looked at in that way that the heroines were looked at,
Please enjoy:to be seen with a mix of desire and care.
Please enjoy:It just felt right when I imagined being held like that,
Please enjoy:it was hard to explain.
Please enjoy:I’d act out fake little romantic stories in my head with fictional characters,
Please enjoy:male and female,
Please enjoy:sometimes both at once!
Please enjoy:I just knew that I wanted to be in love since I was a kid.
Please enjoy:I always wanted that. And
Please enjoy:then I remember learning what a faggot was. I
Please enjoy:remember my older brother saying it so casually like it was nothing.
Please enjoy:Dropping it all the time.
Please enjoy:It seemed so funny at first.
Please enjoy:Here was a new word that got a response out of people!
Please enjoy:It was a word that had
Please enjoy:power! Our parents tried to stop it,
Please enjoy:but it didn’t do much to stop him from screaming it
Please enjoy:all the time when someone had a bad play in football,
Please enjoy:or when he got killed playing a video game.
Please enjoy:It didn’t stop that word from being ingrained in my head.
Please enjoy:I didn’t even know the concept of being gay,
Please enjoy:but I knew connotations of being a faggot. As
Please enjoy:I got older, I didn’t find myself particularly attracted to men,
Please enjoy:but I could find myself seeing someone who was attractive and just appreciating that.
Please enjoy:It didn’t really feel like anything to think someone was good-looking or not,
Please enjoy:it just felt like that’s what we would all think collectively. As
Please enjoy:I got older, I managed to get a few dates now and then,
Please enjoy:real kids stuff, but I was so ready to be in love.
Please enjoy:My heart ached for it.
Please enjoy:I just wanted to be loved by someone and feel accepted by someone.
Please enjoy:School was rough and it always felt like
Please enjoy:everyone else had someone.
Please enjoy:Whether it be a partner or a best friend,
Please enjoy:it felt like they had someone they could just be themselves with
Please enjoy:and I never had that. It
Please enjoy:was a couple years later when I was around 15 that I realized I liked guys.
Please enjoy:His name was Danny.
Please enjoy:He was this cute Dalmatian with amazing hair and I swooned…
Please enjoy:kind of. I would see him playing with his hair and just stare.
Please enjoy:We started talking slowly,
Please enjoy:starting with helping each other out in Trigonometry
Please enjoy:and continuing with us spending time together outside of school.
Please enjoy:It wasn’t long before I realized I had feelings for him. The
Please enjoy:first time we kissed,
Please enjoy:I just remember how
Please enjoy:good it felt. It was a puzzle piece I never knew could fit.
Please enjoy:From then on, we spent a lot of time together.
Please enjoy:We kissed a lot, and,
Please enjoy:well two horny boys spending all their time together,
Please enjoy:it was inevitable we got caught.
Please enjoy:His parents were
Please enjoy:understanding and okay with it.
Please enjoy:Mine? It was rocky. It
Please enjoy:was very rocky. We
Please enjoy:ended up breaking up before college and I ended up having a fling that summer with this
Please enjoy:pretty vixen I met at the pool.
Please enjoy:I enjoyed it but it felt…
Please enjoy:off. At the time, I didn’t even consider that I may not be one for hookups.
Please enjoy:I rationalized my experience as just
Please enjoy:being gay, that was why I was feeling weird afterwards. Going
Please enjoy:into college,
Please enjoy:I called myself gay.
Please enjoy:I had a pride pin on my backpack, I went to GSA meetings, I called myself gay when it would come up
Please enjoy:and that was who I was.
Please enjoy:It’s who I allowed myself to grow into as I got more comfortable expressing myself.
Please enjoy:And it felt great!
Please enjoy:It felt amazing to have other queer people around.
Please enjoy:I was suddenly free to have these conversations that I’d held inside of myself for
Please enjoy:ages. I could date and
Please enjoy:feel out this personality
Please enjoy:and I felt safe. It was the freedom to explore and see who I
Please enjoy:was. Then I met Miles. The
Please enjoy:wolf was kind of an ass at first.
Please enjoy:He’d say things that were true,
Please enjoy:or felt true enough,
Please enjoy:but always with a bit of an edge to it.
Please enjoy:I remember it seemed like he was just trying to shoot for effect a lot of the times.
Please enjoy:I’d done my best to avoid him.
Please enjoy:I wanted nothing to do with him,
Please enjoy:but we had a lot of mutual friends so we ended up at the same meetings and parties together. Slowly,
Please enjoy:we started to get to know each other as we spent more time together.
Please enjoy:But I could also see the part of him that others didn’t seem to.
Please enjoy:There was a real vulnerability he had about him.
Please enjoy:He desperately wanted to be liked,
Please enjoy:and took rejection personally when people weren’t able to hang out with him like they said they could. We
Please enjoy:started to date a few months before summer break. “How
Please enjoy:did you know you were gay?”
Please enjoy:was the question I’ve been coming back to over and over since then. Of
Please enjoy:all the times to be honest with him,
Please enjoy:that was it. Or any of the dozens of times I could have come clean then,
Please enjoy:but I didn’t. I told him my story,
Please enjoy:but I sanitized it for him.
Please enjoy:I hid my attraction for women.
Please enjoy:I hid the hookup before coming to school from him.
Please enjoy:It felt cleaner to lie to him than explain that I said I was gay,
Please enjoy:but still felt desire towards women.
Please enjoy:It was never really gone,
Please enjoy:but it was so infrequent,
Please enjoy:it just felt easier to call myself gay
Please enjoy:than trying to call myself bi
Please enjoy:when I so rarely felt interested in women.
Please enjoy:Gay still felt too
Please enjoy:limiting for me. But it was easier for me to lie
Please enjoy:than try to explain the truth. We
Please enjoy:kept dating throughout college, and even roomed together junior year.
Please enjoy:That was when I started to notice some of the
Please enjoy:issues with his behavior.
Please enjoy:Things that I didn’t notice when I had a chance to spend time away from him. “What
Please enjoy:an asshole,” my friend Sarah said.
Please enjoy:Miles had just told some joke about trans men.
Please enjoy:I don’t even remember what it was, but it was the kind of jokes he would do often enough back then. “He
Please enjoy:really tries too hard,”
Please enjoy:I said. “Honestly, those kinds of jokes just
Please enjoy:aren’t okay. Like, he’s running to be an officer for the GSA and he’s saying shit like that?” “He’s
Please enjoy:not gonna get it,” I told Sarah. “Yeah,
Please enjoy:I just wish someone would tell him off,”
Please enjoy:she griped, clutching her plastic cup and making sizeable dents with her feline claws. I
Please enjoy:wanted to do something.
Please enjoy:I was his boyfriend;
Please enjoy:he would listen to me!
Please enjoy:He had to listen to me.
Please enjoy:But instead, I just sat there,
Please enjoy:feeling the pit twist in my stomach,
Please enjoy:making me feel sicker and sicker each time he’d make another joke
Please enjoy:and I said nothing. Or
Please enjoy:there was that time we were hanging out by the pond on a fall afternoon and he was reading something on his phone. “What
Please enjoy:a fucking bitch!”
Please enjoy:Miles yelled, his head in my lap. “Who?”
Please enjoy:I asked, looking up from my textbook. “Aubrey
Please enjoy:Plaza! She’s trying to say that she’s into women now.” I
Please enjoy:blinked, not quite following.
Please enjoy:“What do you mean?” “I
Please enjoy:mean she’s saying that she ‘falls in love with girls
Please enjoy:and guys. She can’t help it.’”
Please enjoy:Miles stared at me,
Please enjoy:eyes burning to demand I understand his point.
Please enjoy:“I don’t see what the big deal is, Miles.”
Please enjoy:I said. “She’s just trying to clout chase.
Please enjoy:She wants to be queer because it’s trendy now,
Please enjoy:but she’s leaving the door open so she can still date guys.
Please enjoy:She needs to stop pretending and just make up her mind!” When
Please enjoy:Miles was in that mood,
Please enjoy:there was no sense trying to argue with him,
Please enjoy:that was one of the first things I learned about him when we began dating.
Please enjoy:Instead, I just shut down and went back to studying. As
Please enjoy:time went on, I saw more and more of that side of him.
Please enjoy:But it became harder for me to even mount any kind of defense.
Please enjoy:I’d been with him for so long.
Please enjoy:I just sort of accepted it.
Please enjoy:I didn’t have the energy to try and fight him
Please enjoy:when he was behaving like that. “What’s
Please enjoy:wrong with the Pride flag?”
Please enjoy:He said during the first GSA officers’ meeting of our Senior year. “The
Please enjoy:culture fair is to welcome new students,
Please enjoy:we need to show them that their part of the queer community is accepted here
Please enjoy:too.” Sarah said.
Please enjoy:Her eyes narrowed, golden light shining out from the dark of the panther’s fur. “Yeah!”
Please enjoy:Ryan said, a raccoon with rainbow ear gauges.
Please enjoy:“We could have like
Please enjoy:a little UN setup
Please enjoy:with little flags from every corner of the queer space.
Please enjoy:Trans, Ace, Pan! That could really be cute.” “Again,
Please enjoy:what’s wrong
Please enjoy:with the Pride flag?”
Please enjoy:Miles griped. His hackles were raised as he looked around for support.
Please enjoy:Ryan frowned. “It’s not always been the most inclusive.
Please enjoy:Hell, that’s why some gay men have even started to adopt the MLM flag instead to try and
Please enjoy:clarify what kind of pride they mean.”
Please enjoy:“That’s just ridiculous!
Please enjoy:Why do people think they need to make a new flag.
Please enjoy:The Pride flag is accepting of everyone,”
Please enjoy:Miles said. Ryan and Sarah shared an uneasy look at each other.
Please enjoy:“Not everyone sees it that way,”
Please enjoy:Sarah said, her eyes boring into his.
Please enjoy:“Being trans or being lesbian is different than being gay.
Please enjoy:And the Pride flag doesn’t encompass that.
Please enjoy:Gay men during the AIDs crisis were taken care of by Lesbians, Miles.
Please enjoy:Before that, they weren’t exactly the most welcomed in spaces for Gay people.
Please enjoy:So the Pride flag doesn’t exactly make me feel all the
Please enjoy:welcomed.” “If you want your own space, Sarah,
Please enjoy:than you can have it.
Please enjoy:You don’t have to be here.
Please enjoy:This is our space, and if you’re not welcome,
Please enjoy:you don’t have to be here.”
Please enjoy:Sarah stood up and walked away.
Please enjoy:She stopped at the door and looked at me,
Please enjoy:pausing for a moment before storming back out.
Please enjoy:Ryan sat there, his ears drooped.
Please enjoy:He seemed like he wanted to go too,
Please enjoy:but something kept him from acting up.
Please enjoy:I don’t know what drove him to do it,
Please enjoy:but he didn’t stick up for Sarah.
Please enjoy:Maybe it was because he was just now an officer,
Please enjoy:and Miles had been one for years.
Please enjoy:Miles shot the raccoon a look, as if waiting for him to say anything else.
Please enjoy:But he just sat there,
Please enjoy:not even looking at Miles.
Please enjoy:“Whatever,” Miles said, rolling his eyes.
Please enjoy:“Back to business.”
Please enjoy:It was wrong. What he’d just done,
Please enjoy:kicking an officer out of the club,
Please enjoy:for standing her ground on the point she was making?
Please enjoy:I made some excuse when the meeting ended
Please enjoy:and went to be alone for a while.
Please enjoy:This didn’t feel right.
Please enjoy:It didn’t feel like this was who I started dating.
Please enjoy:This was a version of him that felt wrong.
Please enjoy:The comments never felt fully vile,
Please enjoy:just careless, and mean-spirited.
Please enjoy:I didn’t know what to do,
Please enjoy:but he seemed to be trying to decide who
Please enjoy:and what being queer was.
Please enjoy:But the way he described it,
Please enjoy:it didn’t leave room for anyone to argue.
Please enjoy:And the way he acted the rest of the time was never in question.
Please enjoy:I loved him. I had spent 2 years loving him.
Please enjoy:I couldn’t just turn my back on him like that.
Please enjoy:But as we started to talk about plans after college,
Please enjoy:it became more and more clear that he and I would be heading to different places.
Please enjoy:I began to doubt that it would work out for us.
Please enjoy:I had planned on telling him that we should start thinking about the future we could have together so far apart,
Please enjoy:when he told me he was looking at places near me too.
Please enjoy:And honestly? It was more comfortable for me to consider that as a good solution
Please enjoy:than for me to consider breaking up.
Please enjoy:So I decided not to break up.
Please enjoy:It felt like this was the way things were supposed to be.
Please enjoy:Even though he would be so callous that sometimes my stomach would twist into knots.
Please enjoy:I still went on. Sarah didn’t like hearing that I was going to be staying with him.
Please enjoy:She’d stopped coming to meetings and I ended up stuck between two people who hated each other,
Please enjoy:both of whom I loved dearly.
Please enjoy:“You don’t even get to be yourself around him,”
Please enjoy:she told me. That comment threw me.
Please enjoy:I felt floored by it,
Please enjoy:like my chest had been kicked in.
Please enjoy:We were hanging out in her apartment
Please enjoy:not too far from the one I shared with Miles.
Please enjoy:Her roommate was gone for the night and we were watching bad horror movies together when she popped that question. “What
Please enjoy:do you mean?”
Please enjoy:I asked. “I mean you hide around him.
Please enjoy:You’re still in the closet.” I
Please enjoy:tried to open my mouth, to say something
Please enjoy:but the words seemed to die on my tongue,
Please enjoy:trapped between enemy lines in a war between my love of my boyfriend
Please enjoy:and being who I was. The
Please enjoy:few months beforehand,
Please enjoy:I found myself a little less interested in affection with Miles.
Please enjoy:I still liked it,
Please enjoy:but it just felt like it wasn’t what I wanted right then.
Please enjoy:I didn’t know how to describe it,
Please enjoy:but it was an ebb to the flow of my sexuality.
Please enjoy:When he was gone
Please enjoy:I found myself sneaking around porn
Please enjoy:—straight porn. And I knew he’d be upset with me if he said anything.
Please enjoy:But it still didn’t
Please enjoy:feel… I don’t know,
Please enjoy:maybe I just felt like I was bored of him in that moment,
Please enjoy:or I was tired of him rebuffing my advances from stress of school and looking for jobs.
Please enjoy:I was tired. I was so tired of having to dance my comments carefully so he wouldn’t get upset when I’d tell him that I found some
Please enjoy:woman attractive.
Please enjoy:I had to clear my browsing history often and be careful about what tabs were left open.
Please enjoy:It felt tense. But I just
Please enjoy:attributed that to the stress in our relationship right then
Please enjoy:not…. Not that. “You told me you were with a girl before coming to school,
Please enjoy:right?” Sarah asked. I
Please enjoy:nodded my head. “What
Please enjoy:was that like?
Please enjoy:You told me it felt weird,
Please enjoy:I just want to know what you meant.” I
Please enjoy:bit my lip and shook my head in frustration.
Please enjoy:I’d been thinking about this a lot,
Please enjoy:and finally getting to say something about it was… “Afterwards,
Please enjoy:I didn’t
Please enjoy:feel good. I didn’t feel…
Please enjoy:right. I felt empty.
Please enjoy:I felt like what I wanted,
Please enjoy:what I felt with my ex wasn’t there at all.
Please enjoy:It just left me feeling
Please enjoy:sort of gross.” Sarah nodded her head,
Please enjoy:the panther lacing her fingers through mine and giving a supportive squeeze. “Did
Please enjoy:you ever think that maybe you…
Please enjoy:you didn’t like it because it was just a fling?
Please enjoy:You had that deep connection with your ex,
Please enjoy:you had that connection with Miles.
Please enjoy:I’m just wondering, because you’ve never seemed entirely…
Please enjoy:happy when Miles calls you gay.
Please enjoy:You seem like you’re holding something back. “It’s
Please enjoy:not my place to tell you who or what you are,
Please enjoy:but I’ve been your friend longer than you’ve known Miles
Please enjoy:and I know he’s been good for you,
Please enjoy:but he’s also been
Please enjoy:rude. You smoothed some of the rough edges being around him
Please enjoy:and he’s better… but I guess
Please enjoy:I just don’t want you to have to hide parts of yourself.
Please enjoy:That’s not fair to yourself.
Please enjoy:It’s not fair to him
Please enjoy:either.” The more Sarah talked, the more I listened.
Please enjoy:I didn’t even try to say anything,
Please enjoy:to fight her on any of it.
Please enjoy:I just listened and nodded my head.
Please enjoy:I took her words in
Please enjoy:because she was right. I’d
Please enjoy:been lying to myself.
Please enjoy:I’d been lying to Miles,
Please enjoy:I’d been lying to everyone for so long.
Please enjoy:Gay felt right when I first entered college. It felt an apt description, but it hadn’t
Please enjoy:felt like an okay description of who I was for a couple years now,
Please enjoy:but I kept calling myself gay.
Please enjoy:I’d gotten so far down that road;
Please enjoy:I didn’t want to say anything to contradict myself.
Please enjoy:I didn’t want to say something that could hurt what other queer kids at the school could go through.
Please enjoy:Especially when I had
Please enjoy:underclassman in the GSA tell me how much they looked up to me. But
Please enjoy:it wasn’t me.
Please enjoy:And I’d been trying to be someone I wasn’t for so long to make people happy,
Please enjoy:to make Miles happy,
Please enjoy:that I didn’t want to do it anymore. I felt
Please enjoy:hollowed out each time he would critique and call someone a liar for dating men and women,
Please enjoy:or calling themselves bi, or pan.
Please enjoy:He belittled them in private and every time he did,
Please enjoy:every time I didn’t say anything to stop it
Please enjoy:I just felt worse.
Please enjoy:I’d gone to bed, staring at the ceiling with the source of my frustration so many times,
Please enjoy:I’d normalized it. I
Please enjoy:didn’t even realize I was crying until Sarah batted at my cheeks with a tissue.
Please enjoy:She frowned and pulled me closer to her so she could hug me as I tried to control my tears. I
Please enjoy:know we talked about what to do,
Please enjoy:but I don’t remember much of the conversation,
Please enjoy:only that I felt…
Please enjoy:emboldened to do what I had to do.
Please enjoy:Because living like this?
Please enjoy:It wasn’t sustainable,
Please enjoy:and it wasn’t fair to myself. Which
Please enjoy:led me to pacing the hall,
Please enjoy:working up the nerves to start having the conversation with Miles.
Please enjoy:It’s not easy to do something that
Please enjoy:feels like sabotaging your own happiness,
Please enjoy:but isn’t that what I’d been doing for all those years? Maybe
Please enjoy:one day down the road,
Please enjoy:I can find someone at a coffee shop,
Please enjoy:and our eyes can meet.
Please enjoy:I’ll be able to say something
Please enjoy:flirty, regardless of their gender identity,
Please enjoy:and not feel self-conscious, or worried someone will think I’m anything but gay. And
Please enjoy:as we start talking,
Please enjoy:maybe I’ll be able to answer honestly when they ask
Please enjoy:what my orientation is. “I’m
Please enjoy:pan,” I’ll say. Even
Please enjoy:thinking about that,
Please enjoy:my chest feels lighter,
Please enjoy:the weight letting up
Please enjoy:just enough that I know this is the right
Please enjoy:thing to do. I reach for the door knob
Please enjoy:and pull it open,
Please enjoy:seeing Miles in our shared dorm room,
Please enjoy:starting to pack up his stuff.
Please enjoy:He smiles when he sees me
Please enjoy:but I can’t seem to return it.
Please enjoy:But it’s the thought of the future,
Please enjoy:the future where I can admit to myself and people around me freely,
Please enjoy:that gives me the courage to say. “Hey
Please enjoy:babe, can you sit down?
Please enjoy:There’s something we should talk about.”
