Matthew Hartnett has played trombone for the likes of Lauryn Hill, Dave Chappelle, and Talib Kweli. He created The Gumbo Jam, an improv live music collaboration, in New York and Houston. He's known his purpose since the age of 12 and has spent his life living up to it. I sat down with him on August 25, 2023, to hear how and why he does what he does.
