Speaker:

Hey, everybody.

2

:

Welcome to today's episode

of the daily Bible podcast.

3

:

In fact, it's not just any Tuesday.

4

:

It is all star game Tuesday,

the baseball all-star game.

5

:

If you're not aware, It's being held

here in Texas in the home of the

6

:

Texas Rangers, the world champion.

7

:

Texas Rangers they're hosting.

8

:

The all-star game is tonight.

9

:

Uh, it should be an interesting

game if you're into watching that.

10

:

Of course, none of you are going to be

watching it because all of you are going

11

:

to be with us at compass Bible church for.

12

:

Vacation Bible school.

13

:

So my wife reminded me of that this

week, as we were talking about.

14

:

Uh, what's happening.

15

:

I said, Hey, the all-star

games on Tuesday.

16

:

She said, Hey, we're

not going to watch it.

17

:

Cause we're going to

be at compass for VBS.

18

:

And that's true.

19

:

And you know what?

20

:

That's better.

21

:

That's better than an all-star game.

22

:

It's better than a sporting event.

23

:

It's going to be an awesome time.

24

:

Uh, we're on day two

of it today on Tuesday.

25

:

And so I trust that they one went well

looking forward to the rest of the week,

26

:

but it is it's all star game Tuesday.

27

:

So there you go.

28

:

If you're at work and somebody

brings up the all-star game,

29

:

you've got something to, to banter

about and, and talk to them about.

30

:

Uh, something else that I thought

maybe I'd call to your attention before

31

:

we jump into the text today, maybe a

little bit of a brief episode today.

32

:

Uh, but if you are somebody who writes

in your Bible, if you are somebody

33

:

that takes notes or you've used a

journaling Bible before something that

34

:

you might be interested in, that's

been published recently by Crossway.

35

:

Is the ESV spiral bound journaling Bible.

36

:

It comes in five volumes and

they're really well done.

37

:

The, uh, the covers on these kind

of have like an earthy tone look to

38

:

them, but they've got, uh, the five

volumes they've got the history.

39

:

They've got the Pentateuch.

40

:

Uh, other way round pet a Tuk history.

41

:

Uh, poetry.

42

:

Prophecy.

43

:

And then one on the new Testament.

44

:

So four in the old Testament, one

on the new Testament and they lay

45

:

flat because it's a spiral bound

and it's just a super cool layout.

46

:

They're big.

47

:

Uh, notebooks, they're big volumes.

48

:

So these aren't something that you're

going to pack in your backpack and

49

:

take all five of them with you.

50

:

But if you have a space at home that you

typically study your Bible, and you'd like

51

:

to make notes in the columns, this might

be something that you want to look into.

52

:

And so you can get it at Crossway.

53

:

You can get it at Amazon, you

can get it at Mardel books.

54

:

Uh, they're a little bit more

expensive than the others.

55

:

I think the best price I saw was

actually at Christian book distributors.

56

:

So Christian book.com.

57

:

I think they had it for less

than a hundred bucks for all five

58

:

volumes, which is a great deal.

59

:

Uh, so there you go.

60

:

If you're somebody who likes to take

notes or make notes in the margin,

61

:

the ESV spiral bound journaling Bible

is available and might be worth your,

62

:

your investments might be a good

resource for you to check out their.

63

:

Uh, we're not sponsored by Crossway.

64

:

I think we've mentioned that before.

65

:

We'd love to be sponsored by Crossway.

66

:

So Crossway, if you happen to be

listening, you know, Somebody there and

67

:

you want to sponsor a daily Bible podcast.

68

:

Hey, we're here.

69

:

We're, we're, we're coming at you.

70

:

We love your product.

71

:

We use your product and we would love

to, uh, to promote you even more.

72

:

But anyways, all that aside, why don't we

get into our daily Bible reading today?

73

:

We got a full day to day.

74

:

We got VBS tonight.

75

:

So let's get right after it.

76

:

Isaiah 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17.

77

:

So we get five chapters today.

78

:

Some Micah was seven chapters.

79

:

A couple of days ago, you get two

chapters less today in this passage.

80

:

Isaiah 13, Isaiah 13 opens

up and the theme shifts from

81

:

where we've been in Isaiah.

82

:

And now this is a little bit harder.

83

:

You may want to, before you jump into

the reading today, and when we're

84

:

going in and out of these prophetic

books, go back and, and kind of

85

:

catch up, go to the chapter 12.

86

:

You don't have to read the whole

thing, but just kind of let your eyes.

87

:

Uh, bounce around in the, in the text

there, remind yourself of where we've

88

:

been, because in chapter 12, we were

talking about the millennial kingdom.

89

:

One chapter 13, we shift from

the millennial kingdom and

90

:

the hope that's there to the

impending reality of judgment.

91

:

And that's what Isaiah 13 is going to

be all about in verses one through five.

92

:

Uh, God is going to

summon it Babylon again.

93

:

Remember, like I said, I

think in yesterday's episode

94

:

or maybe the day before.

95

:

Babylon was not the world

power during this date.

96

:

A serial was.

97

:

And so all of this talk of Babylon.

98

:

Would have been, uh, head-scratching,

uh, not only for the people, but also

99

:

honestly, probably for Isaiah himself.

100

:

I mean, he's yeah, he's gonna

record what, what the Lord wants

101

:

him to record, but he's probably

got his own set of questions.

102

:

Like why Babylon?

103

:

Why not a Syria?

104

:

A serious seems to be the

logical conclusion, but.

105

:

Uh, chapter 13, verse one,

the Oracle concerning Babylon.

106

:

Now.

107

:

Uh, no.

108

:

In these first five verses how the Lord

describes Babylon, he says in verse three,

109

:

my consecrated ones to be consecrated

is to be set apart for the use of God.

110

:

The vessels in the temple were consecrated

you and I, as Christians, we have

111

:

been consecrated for use by the Lord.

112

:

This word is a word that we don't expect

to be applied to a godless nation out a

113

:

Gentile nation like Babylon, but that's

exactly what he does in Isaiah 13 three,

114

:

the Lord speaking, he says I myself

have committed my consecrated ones.

115

:

The ones that I've set apart from my

purposes is what the Lord is saying.

116

:

I've summoned by mighty men to execute

my anger, my proudly exulting ones.

117

:

So there's no doubt in our minds.

118

:

There should be no doubt in our minds.

119

:

There would've been no doubt in

Israel's minds or Isaiah's mind

120

:

about who it was that was responsible

for the impending judgment.

121

:

From the Babylonians.

122

:

God is the one that's doing this.

123

:

He calls them his consecrated once.

124

:

Th that he's going to use this

godless nation to bring judgment

125

:

upon the people of Judah.

126

:

This is a mind boggling concept

so much so that that's really the

127

:

heart of the book of Habakkuk.

128

:

We've alluded to that.

129

:

We've talked about that when we get to

Habakkuk, we'll talk about it in depth.

130

:

But the profit is Habakkuk is so

astounded that God would use a

131

:

godless nation like, like Babylon.

132

:

He can't do that, but that's

what he's saying here.

133

:

My consecrated ones, the

ones that I've set apart.

134

:

So verses one through five God is, is

summoning, Babylon to be the instrument

135

:

of his wrath and anger against Judah.

136

:

Notice it's not passive judgment

or simple permissive judgment.

137

:

God is bringing them.

138

:

He's not just allowing this.

139

:

He is bringing it about he is

causing it to happen according

140

:

to his decreed and perfect.

141

:

I will.

142

:

Verses six through nine then.

143

:

Uh, the idea here, the concept

here is, Hey, you know what?

144

:

We need to fear the Lord fear

the day of the Lord, both

145

:

imminent and, and future fear.

146

:

The judgment whale for the day of the Lord

is near as the destruction from almighty.

147

:

He will come verse nine behold, the day of

the Lord comes cruel with wrath and fierce

148

:

anger to make the land of desolation

into, to destroy sinners from it.

149

:

And so we've talked about this before

the day of the Lord, there was a

150

:

near term fulfillment of that with

the judgment of, of God's people

151

:

at the hands of the Babylonians.

152

:

Like we've been just alluding to

in this chapter, but then there's

153

:

the, the future day of the Lord.

154

:

The the end times, day of the Lord,

both of them shouldn't steal the fear.

155

:

Uh, perhaps the end

times will not perhaps.

156

:

Certainly the N times one, even more so

than the short-term fulfillment at the

157

:

hands of the Babylonians verses 10 through

13, then we get the picture of the cosmic

158

:

response to the impending judgment.

159

:

Th the creation itself, the universe,

the heavens, the constellations.

160

:

Uh, they are trembling at the judgment.

161

:

That's going to come.

162

:

They're going to darken the, the stars

are not going to give their light.

163

:

The sun is not going to give its light.

164

:

Uh, verse 12, people are going to

be more rare than find gold and

165

:

mankind in the gold of oh, fear.

166

:

Uh, verse 13, I'm going to make

the heavens tremble and the earth

167

:

will be shaking out of its place

at the wrath of the Lord of hosts.

168

:

This is a terrifying time.

169

:

And it's this specifically I believe is

alluding to in, in pointing towards that

170

:

ultimate future day of the Lord, uh,

the eschatological day of the Lord and

171

:

that the cosmic response we read about

the earthquakes and the darkening of the

172

:

stars and everything else, we read about

all of that in the book of revelation.

173

:

Here it is with Isaiah about

700 years or so before Christ.

174

:

And he's talking about the same things

as coming in the future day of the Lord.

175

:

Uh, verses 14 through 16, then the focus

shifts back to the Babylonians and here.

176

:

He's talking about the

ruthlessness of the Babylonians.

177

:

He's talking about how, how terrible

they are as a people and what they

178

:

will do to the people of Israel.

179

:

And it's, it's horrific to read this.

180

:

Uh, and, and yet at the same

time, we have to remember.

181

:

Uh, when we read a verse like verse

16, which parents I'll go ahead and

182

:

let you just read verse 16 on your own.

183

:

And you can bring that to, into

light with your, your kids or not.

184

:

But when we read verse 16, remember

what Judah was doing with Maleck.

185

:

Remember what Ahab.

186

:

was doing with Molech.

187

:

And so it's not that they're too far

off the Babylonians and God's people,

188

:

the people of Judah at this time.

189

:

But verses 14 through 16.

190

:

Uh, the ruthlessness there of the

Babylonians in their judgment, then

191

:

verses 17 through 22 of chapter 13.

192

:

Uh, God is going to judge the Babylonians

that's that's comes out in Habakkuk too.

193

:

Listen, Babylon is not

going to just get off.

194

:

Uh, Scott free with their ruthlessness,

that Babylon is, is not going to

195

:

be able to come in and destroy

God's people and remain unpunished.

196

:

In fact, in verse 17, he's going to

God, I'm going to stir up the Medes.

197

:

And so again, God's sovereignty, who

are the Medes, the Mito Persians.

198

:

It's the second empire as we think

of the book of Daniel and the

199

:

statue, Babylon being the golden

head, the Mito Persians, being the.

200

:

The chest and the arms

there that come next there.

201

:

And so the Meads are going to come against

Babylon did end up taking out Babylon.

202

:

So God's saying, Hey, you know what?

203

:

Babylon is going to get theirs too.

204

:

But in verse or chapter

13, Hey, judgment's coming.

205

:

Judgment's coming.

206

:

Chapter 14.

207

:

Then we get into chapter 14 and

that focus shifts once more.

208

:

Uh, back to the millennial kingdom.

209

:

Uh, and, and this we see

in verses one through two.

210

:

Uh, for the Lord will have compassion

on Jacob and we'll again, choose Israel

211

:

and we'll set them in their own land.

212

:

Now, Jacob and Israel, we're not

talking Northern kingdom here.

213

:

We're talking Jacob and Israel

as the representation of the

214

:

entirety of the people of God.

215

:

Uh, and so this is back to thinking

about not the divided kingdom, but

216

:

the United people of God, Jacob and

Israel, God's going to bring them back.

217

:

And when he brings them back, Uh, they

are going to be put in their place.

218

:

Even sojourners are gonna come and

attach themselves to the house of Jacob.

219

:

This is going to be a good time.

220

:

And this is that future

millennial kingdom.

221

:

During this time verses three through 11.

222

:

Israel is going to mock and rejoice

over the downfall of Babylon.

223

:

So this is a near and future.

224

:

And so in the short term, when the Meads

come in and take out the Babylonians.

225

:

There's going to be some rejoicing

from the people of Israel over that.

226

:

And you can understand when you read

about what they're going to do to the

227

:

Israelite people, you can understand

that they would rejoice that this godless

228

:

nation is being punished for that.

229

:

But then in the future, in the

eschatological period of time in

230

:

the millennial kingdom, The you

read the book of revelation in

231

:

during the tribulation period.

232

:

Uh, Babylon is on the scene.

233

:

Again, not Babylon in the same sense that

it is here, but there's a new Babylon

234

:

that's going to show up in the end times.

235

:

And that Babylon just like this

Babylon is going to be judged.

236

:

And at that time, just like

here, the people of God are going

237

:

to rejoice over that judgment.

238

:

So 13.

239

:

Or three through 11 there of chapter 14.

240

:

Uh, is, is Israel rejoicing

now and in the future as well.

241

:

And then verses 14 or verses 12

through 23, then 12 through 23.

242

:

Uh, this focuses on God's

judgment, which features both,

243

:

uh, the king of Babylon and Satan.

244

:

And so this is an important text

because in here you get a reference

245

:

to in verse 12, how you are fallen

from heaven O day star of Dawn.

246

:

Lucifer is the translation O'Day star

Lucifer there, another name for Satan.

247

:

And so here there's a recognition

on the part of God through his

248

:

prophet, that there is a, a coalition

of demonic forces and sometimes

249

:

Satan himself and the evil nations.

250

:

Th the, the world.

251

:

And so this gives us a glimpse

in, in kind of a peek into

252

:

how all of this comes about.

253

:

Uh, similar to when.

254

:

Satan showed up to God before.

255

:

Um, going after job and in God

said, go and, and do what you

256

:

will only do not touch his body.

257

:

Don't take his life from him.

258

:

And then Satan comes back and says,

well, we'll let me touch your body now.

259

:

And God says, okay, fine.

260

:

Go and you may have flipped his

body, but don't take his life.

261

:

Don't kill him.

262

:

Satan.

263

:

It is the, the executer of the

evil, but under the divine and

264

:

permissive decreed will of God.

265

:

And so here in Isaiah, chapter 14,

verses 12 through 23, we see that.

266

:

Satan is working with Babylon to

bring about God's judgment over.

267

:

Uh, his people.

268

:

And so just a crazy.

269

:

Um, multi-layered concept here to get

a glimpse into the divine throne room.

270

:

And yet that's, what's happening in

Isaiah chapter 14, verses 12 through 23.

271

:

Hey, you know what?

272

:

God's going to judge both

Babylon and Satan and, and.

273

:

The language of judgment here.

274

:

Um, in this text, sometimes it

applies to Satan and other times to

275

:

the human king of Babylon and other

times it's, it applies to both.

276

:

And so there's, there's multiple

levels at work there, but it's, it's

277

:

Satan and Babylon and it's Kings are

all being judged by God in verses

278

:

12 through 23 of Isaiah chapter 14.

279

:

Now after this, the focus

shifts to the nations.

280

:

And so from here through the rest of

our reading, Uh, what is going to happen

281

:

is the prophet is going to prophesy

about how God is going to judge some

282

:

of these other nations, uh, Syria.

283

:

In chapter 14, verses 24 through 27.

284

:

Uh, the Philistines in chapter

14, verses 28 through 32.

285

:

In chapter 15, the Moabites in chapter 16.

286

:

Again, still focused

on the Moabites there.

287

:

And then chapter 17, the Syrians

and the Northern kingdom.

288

:

And so the focus shifts to all

of these and we might think,

289

:

okay, well, whiplash year, right?

290

:

We've been talking about Babylon

and Judah, and now all of a sudden

291

:

we're talking about a Syria.

292

:

We're talking about the Philistines.

293

:

We're talking about the Moabites

we're talking about the Syrians.

294

:

What, what is going on?

295

:

Well, here.

296

:

It is my best read on this

section here after God threatens

297

:

judgment with the Babylonians.

298

:

I believe what he's doing here

is he is through the prophet.

299

:

Exhorting his people not to put

their trust in these other nations

300

:

as though they would deliver them

from this impending judgment.

301

:

I think he's saying to, to the

people of Judah saying, Hey, don't

302

:

trust in the Assyrians, because

they're going to be punished.

303

:

They're going to be judged in

chapter 14, verses 24 through 27.

304

:

And then he's saying, you know what?

305

:

As for the Philistines, don't put

your trust in the Philistines.

306

:

Don't think that that they're going

to rejoice, that, that they're

307

:

going to be able to help you because

verses 28 through 32 of chapter

308

:

14, They're going to be judged.

309

:

They're going to fall as well.

310

:

Oh.

311

:

And by the way, the Moabites Hey

judgments, come into the Moabites as well.

312

:

So don't think that you might

be able to turn to the Moabites

313

:

and look for help from them.

314

:

In fact, this is such an interesting

section chapter 15 and 16, because

315

:

the Moabites hold such a unique place

in God's economy with his people.

316

:

Uh, they were the descendants of

the impure relationship of a lot.

317

:

And his daughter, if you remember

that story, that's who the Moabites

318

:

came from to send it from, um, In

this section, it appears that the

319

:

Asian of destruction for the mobile

it's, it's going to be the Assyrians.

320

:

Uh, but, uh, but the, the mobile

remember historically these are the

321

:

people of Baylock who impeded Israel's

journey towards the promised land.

322

:

And he tried to curse them through Baylor.

323

:

These are the people who their

immorality bled into Israel and

324

:

became a snare to the people.

325

:

Numbers 25.

326

:

Uh, these are the people

that David had won a decisive

327

:

victory over during his reign.

328

:

These are the people also though that Ruth

came from that David's grandmother came

329

:

from a, these are the people that rebelled

against Israel and establish their own

330

:

independence during the divided monarchy.

331

:

Moab in Israel has such a

unique history together.

332

:

And here God is saying, you know what?

333

:

Don't look to the mobile.

334

:

Don't think that you're going to be

able to get help from the mobile it's.

335

:

In fact, in chapter 16, what's interesting

is God prophesies through the prophet.

336

:

God says through the prophet that

the mobiles are actually going to

337

:

come to Judah and look for help.

338

:

And that's 16 one that they're going to

send the peace lamb to Judah, and they're

339

:

going to be looking for help from the,

from Judah and saying, Hey, can our.

340

:

Can our fugitives can our, are our

exiles, can we take shelter in Judah?

341

:

Can you protect us from the wrath of

the Assyrians in verses six through

342

:

eight of chapter 16, Isaiah reminds the

Moabites here as they're seeking shelter.

343

:

Look, the only way that

you're going to find.

344

:

Shelter.

345

:

The only way that you're gonna find

shelter is if you find shelter by, by

346

:

repenting, if you find shelter, uh, by, by

getting right with the God of Israel, and

347

:

that's the profits response there, sorry.

348

:

Verses four through five.

349

:

Uh, but then in the rest of chapter

16, Isaiah reminds the reader of why

350

:

Moab was suffering the way they were.

351

:

They were not innocent.

352

:

Uh, at verse six alone,

the word pride shows up.

353

:

Six times to, to describe Moab.

354

:

And so Isaiah's conclusion is, as he

says there in verse, I believe it's

355

:

eight, let Moab whale from Moab.

356

:

And so there was not

going to be hope for Moab.

357

:

There was not going to be deliverance

from Moab and also, Hey, you know what?

358

:

Moab was also not going to be able

to provide any help for Israel.

359

:

And that's what he's

reminding them of chapter 17.

360

:

Then chapter 17, it focuses on Sirius.

361

:

So we've said, Hey, Don't trust in

the Assyrians don't trust in the

362

:

Philistines don't trust in the Moabites.

363

:

Hey, don't trust in the Syrians.

364

:

Uh, this chapter opens.

365

:

By addressing Damascus and Isaiah 17

one, but then notice that who's tucked

366

:

in there in verse three, Ethereum that's

Israel, that's in the Northern kingdom.

367

:

And so the Northern kingdom is

assumed under this Oracle against

368

:

the maskus because the Northern

kingdom had compromised so much.

369

:

And because the Northern

kingdom had had really.

370

:

Just wedded themselves to the Syrians

in so many ways for help against the

371

:

us Syrians that here, they're kind

of brought under the umbrella of

372

:

the judgment against Damascus, and

God is telling the people of Judah.

373

:

Don't trust them.

374

:

Also don't trust the people there.

375

:

Uh, in, in Israel, don't

look to the Syrians.

376

:

Don't look to the Israelites.

377

:

Uh, to the north, they're not

going to help you because they're

378

:

going to be judged as well.

379

:

So Isaiah, this whole section that

we've just read this morning or today.

380

:

We get this focus on this.

381

:

Hey, you know what, judgment's coming on,

Judah at the hands of the Babylonians.

382

:

And by the way, Judah, if you're

looking to escape that judgment,

383

:

don't trust the nations around you.

384

:

Don't look to them for hope because you

know, what's going to happen to them.

385

:

They're going to be judged as well.

386

:

There's one thing that would spare

the people of God and, and really not

387

:

even necessarily from the judgment,

but just that would allow them to be

388

:

part of the remnant that would allow

them to experience some of God's

389

:

mercy in the midst of all of this.

390

:

And that is if they were right

with the Lord, if that is as.

391

:

As we read from Micah, you know,

oh man, what is required of you,

392

:

but to do justice, to love mercy,

to walk humbly with your Lord.

393

:

Uh, there would be some

that would do that.

394

:

Think Daniel and his three friends.

395

:

But for the others.

396

:

Uh, judgment was coming and

there wasn't going to be found

397

:

any hope in any other nation.

398

:

That's what we're looking at

in today's daily Bible reading.

399

:

Let me pray for us.

400

:

And then we'll wrap up God.

401

:

Thanks for this day.

402

:

Uh, thanks for our VBS that's going on

and we should pray for another great

403

:

night tonight for that, we pray that it

would be, uh, just a, an, an awesome.

404

:

Camp that it would be an awesome

experience for those that are gathered

405

:

there for these kiddos, that they

would learn a lot about the gospel.

406

:

Learn a lot about who Jesus is, that

these would be seized, that you would

407

:

water and bring to full growth later on.

408

:

And God, we pray that we would trust you.

409

:

We pray that when we experience your hand

of discipline in our life and judgment

410

:

in our life, that we would not turn like

the Israelites were attempted to, to.

411

:

Other sources to try to escape

your discipline, but that we would

412

:

understand that your discipline

is meant to drive us to you.

413

:

That has meant to produce repentance.

414

:

And so God help us to be quick

along those lines to repent.

415

:

And to fleet to you.

416

:

And so we thank you for this.

417

:

Thank you for this reading.

418

:

Thank you for today.

419

:

We pray this all in Jesus name.

420

:

Amen.

421

:

Hey, keep it in your Bibles

and be back with us tomorrow.

422

:

Cause pastor rods back

on the podcast tomorrow.

423

:

And looking forward to

that, I know you are too.

424

:

So keep bring your Bibles and

don't miss tomorrow's reading.

425

:

Bye-bye.
