What happens when the person everyone assumes needs ministry becomes the one doing the ministering?
Recorded at the Christian Product Expo (CPE) Summer 2026 in St. Charles, Missouri, TS Wright sits down with award-winning author Michael Dunn to discuss his faith journey and his book, His Name Was John Whitman: A Life Shared.
Michael shares how his Christian upbringing, years of ministry involvement, and 24-year career as a New York police officer helped shape his understanding of faith, people, tragedy, and the transforming power of God's truth.
At the center of Michael's novel is John Whitman, a homeless man who becomes the person sharing faith with those around him. Rather than portraying the homeless character simply as someone who needs to be evangelized, Michael turns the traditional narrative around: John becomes the evangelist.
Through his encounters with Alan, a worldly businessman initially resistant to him, John's testimony and life begin breaking through barriers and ultimately point Alan toward faith in Christ.
Michael describes the book as a fictional story carrying a very real message: the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the grace of God, and the responsibility of believers to take their faith outside the church walls.
In this conversation, TS Wright and Michael discuss:
- Why evangelism must extend beyond the walls of the local church
- The difference between evangelism and discipleship
- Why Christians sometimes hesitate to share their faith
- How personal testimony can open doors for the Gospel
- Ministering to homeless and marginalized communities
- How tragedy, loss, and addiction are addressed through the story
- Why sharing the Gospel does not have to be complicated
- The importance of planting spiritual seeds
- Helping new believers become discipled and spiritually strong
- The Great Commission responsibility to evangelize and then disciple others
Michael also explains a practice he uses when giving the book to Christians: encouraging them not only to read it, but to give another copy to someone for whom they have been praying.
The central message is simple but urgent:
God loves us. Sin separates us from God. Jesus Christ became the bridge that we could never build ourselves. Salvation is God's free gift, but each person must personally receive Christ by faith.
And once believers receive that message, we are called to share it.
As TS Wright reminds listeners, evangelism does not require knowing everything. It begins with knowing Christ, sharing what He has done, and allowing God to use your testimony to reach someone else.
