Shownotes

Chill Pretty is more than a boutique. It is a one-stop salon, boutique, and community space built around style, connection, and making women feel welcomed. On this episode of the Whiskey and Wisdom Podcast, Chris Kellum and Tyler Yaw are on location in Surf City, North Carolina with Amber and Michelle, the owners of Chill Pretty Boutique. Chill Pretty is more than a boutique. It is a one-stop salon, boutique, and community space built around style, connection, and making women feel welcomed. Amber shares how her longtime hair career led her to open a small two-chair salon with a boutique attached, and how rapid growth pushed the business into a larger space. Michelle shares how their partnership formed organically as neighbors and turned into a thriving local brand. In this conversation, we talk about building a salon and boutique business, creating a strong community culture, weekly yoga, supporting military families, buying trips to the Vegas market, boutique inventory strategy, Surf City business growth, loyal customers, Black Friday events, and what success really looks like when you are leading a team and serving your community. Whether you love small business stories, boutique fashion, salon culture, Surf City, Topsail Island, or local entrepreneurship, this episode gives a behind-the-scenes look at how Chill Pretty Boutique is growing with intention. Chris:

Welcome back to the Whiskey and Wisdom podcast.

2

:

We are on location doing some fun stuff.

3

:

I am your constant co-host

Chris Kellum, with Tyler Yaw.

4

:

And our special guests are the

owners of Chill Pretty Boutique Ms.

5

:

Amber and Michelle.

6

:

Brittany: Hello.

7

:

Chris: Welcome, welcome.

8

:

Before we go too crazy, as you guys

can notice, we are on location.

9

:

We are doing our now annual

trip out to Surf City.

10

:

Mm-hmm.

11

:

Thank you, Ms.

12

:

Brittany Lineberry, for

setting this up for us.

13

:

And this is a beautiful

space, I just wanna say.

14

:

Thank

15

:

Girls: you.

16

:

Thank you.

17

:

Chris: And as you guys haven't

realized, we are sitting right next to

18

:

Sundial Coffee, which is why we have

a ton of that sitting on the table.

19

:

So shout out Sundial.

20

:

Check out that episode.

21

:

Tyler: And it's also 10 o'clock

in the morning, and whiskey

22

:

didn't seem appropriate.

23

:

So…

24

:

It

25

:

Chris: did not.

26

:

Uh, so- We were

27

:

Girls: hoping it

28

:

Chris: would.

29

:

I was like, "I had a bottle in the car."

30

:

Girls: Michelle said, "I'm gonna have

to take a shot before we do this."

31

:

Chris: No, you're good.

32

:

So ladies, tell us a little

bit about yourself, and how you

33

:

kinda came up with this idea.

34

:

Girls: Okay.

35

:

Well…

36

:

Unless, like, you…

37

:

You wanna go first?

38

:

Yeah, you go first.

39

:

Brittany: No, you go

40

:

Girls: first.

41

:

So, I have been a hair

stylist for 20 years.

42

:

Okay.

43

:

And I had my business down

in Wilmington for 16 years.

44

:

I guess I've been doing

hair for 22 years now.

45

:

And with all the growth in the area, I

just, I was like, "I need to be closer."

46

:

I have two children.

47

:

I have a s- a son that's getting ready

to be a senior at Topsail High School.

48

:

Ooh,

49

:

Brittany: okay.

50

:

Girls: And then my daughter is 10, and the

traffic in the morning, it was taking me

51

:

over an hour to get to Mayfair, and- Yes.

52

:

Yep … I just saw all the

growth happening, and I

53

:

wanted to open up something.

54

:

And I had been in a suite salon.

55

:

Chris: Yeah.

56

:

Girls: So I still wanted to

have, like, a smaller area.

57

:

So whenever we first opened, we

had just this unit over here.

58

:

Oh.

59

:

And we only had two chairs.

60

:

Chris: Got you.

61

:

Okay.

62

:

Girls: And the boutique was in the

front, and then there was two chairs.

63

:

And then it grew so much.

64

:

So last year we had the opportunity

to take this over, and so we did.

65

:

But I opened, and within three weeks

I had met Michelle, and I was like, "I

66

:

want her to be my business partner."

67

:

Chris: I love it.

68

:

Yeah.

69

:

Girls: Yeah.

70

:

We were neighbors.

71

:

Chris: Okay.

72

:

Girls: Yeah.

73

:

Yep.

74

:

Chris: I was curious.

75

:

I'm like, "Did you come

in to get your hair done?"

76

:

Or are you just like, she saw

somebody walk past, she's like, "She

77

:

looks like a good business partner."

78

:

Girls: No, she was my neighbor,

and we just became friends.

79

:

And before I opened, she would come

here and help me, like, hang pictures

80

:

and- Yeah … just- We tried to

build, like, a vanity out of wood.

81

:

Yeah, it was- … funny, in the bathroom.

82

:

And then I was cutting her hair one

day, and I was just like, "I, do

83

:

you wanna be my business partner?"

84

:

I always wanted a business partner, I

just wanted it to happen organically.

85

:

Yeah.

86

:

Tyler: Yeah.

87

:

Girls: And so I feel like God

sent her to me, or sent, you know.

88

:

Chris: Yeah.

89

:

Girls: He put us together.

90

:

Chris: I like that.

91

:

Tyler: Were you guys just talking

one day and just kinda, came up?

92

:

Like, you know what?

93

:

We're vibing well.

94

:

You have some really good ideas.

95

:

Like, we get along really well.

96

:

Do you wanna join the fray?

97

:

Is that kinda how that happened?

98

:

Girls: Yes,

99

:

Tyler: it

100

:

Girls: is.

101

:

Yeah.

102

:

Tyler: That's awesome.

103

:

Girls: And we are, we're very

codependent on each other.

104

:

Like, we, we have a very, very,

very good rela- relationship.

105

:

Good.

106

:

Tyler: Yeah.

107

:

Girls: Which is important.

108

:

I love that.

109

:

Tyler: When she asked you first

to be her business partner,

110

:

what was the first reaction?

111

:

Girls: I, I think I was, like,

kinda shocked, 'cause, like, when

112

:

I would come and help, I'm like,

"This is such a cool concept."

113

:

Yeah.

114

:

And I was like, "I would l-

like, this is something."

115

:

A little backstory on me.

116

:

I did go to fashion school for about-

117

:

Chris: Okay

118

:

… Girls: maybe a year.

119

:

Chris: Yeah.

120

:

Girls: And then that didn't work out.

121

:

So I have a l- I've always had,

like, a little itch to get into

122

:

fashion and things like that.

123

:

Gotcha.

124

:

So when she told me, I

was like, "Oh my gosh."

125

:

You know?

126

:

She goes, "Let me ask my husband."

127

:

And I already knew.

128

:

I was like, "Yeah, let me…"

129

:

Like, this is happening anyway.

130

:

Yeah.

131

:

It's happening.

132

:

'Cause I went, I was

like, "Yeah, let me see."

133

:

Tyler: But it

134

:

Girls: was super exciting

to, like, you know.

135

:

And we could not have

grown without one another.

136

:

Like, there is- Yeah … there's

no way that, like, one person

137

:

could do- No … all this.

138

:

Chris: No.

139

:

I mean, just looking at the growth

in general, I know people and friends

140

:

who've worked in salons, and, like, just

running a salon or, like, hair, running

141

:

your own hair business is one thing.

142

:

Yeah.

143

:

But then adding a boutique on

the front that's not just hair

144

:

products, two very different setups.

145

:

Tyler: Yeah.

146

:

That's actually one of my questions.

147

:

What made you wanna have the hair salon

and have the boutique connected with it?

148

:

Girls: Well, it's a one-stop shop.

149

:

I mean, you know, if a woman comes

in to get their hair done and

150

:

she has an opportunity to buy a

cute outfit to go with it, then-

151

:

Chris: Right

152

:

Girls: it's a win-win.

153

:

You know?

154

:

Chris: Oh, for sure.

155

:

She, she leaves the house in, like, yoga

pants and casual, and she comes home-

156

:

Mm-hmm … with the hair did, whole new

outfit, looking like a whole new woman.

157

:

Yeah.

158

:

New mom set up.

159

:

Girls: And they're, like,

hanging out when they're, like,

160

:

you know, processing and stuff.

161

:

It gives them a little

something to do and-

162

:

Tyler: Yeah, makes a lot of sense.

163

:

Like, when my wife and mom and stuff go to

the hair salon and they're sitting there

164

:

for, like, three hours, if they had time

to walk around a boutique, I guarantee you

165

:

they'd spend some money doing that too.

166

:

Yeah.

167

:

Yes.

168

:

Girls: We have clients, and they'll

be like, "What's Chill Pretty?

169

:

It's Chill Pretty, Chill

Pretty, Chill Pretty?"

170

:

Like,

171

:

on the re- or on their bank

172

:

statement.

173

:

Yeah.

174

:

Just in one day.

175

:

Yeah.

176

:

It's like, how many times did

you check out of that place?

177

:

Chill Pretty Hair, Chill

Pretty Boutique, you know.

178

:

Chris: I love that.

179

:

So did you, were you always Chill

Pretty when you had, like, your

180

:

own little spot, or did you, this

name kinda, like, come together?

181

:

Girls: Yes, it came together.

182

:

Okay.

183

:

I didn't, no, it wasn't called this when-

184

:

Chris: Okay.

185

:

That's what I thought 'cause we've

been up here a few times, and we're

186

:

like, "I didn't think it was…"

187

:

Girls: So when we opened,

it was Chill Pretty.

188

:

Okay.

189

:

But when I, like, had my business in

Wilmington, it, it wasn't Chill Pretty.

190

:

Okay.

191

:

Yeah.

192

:

Yeah, it's kind of changed from, like,

it was Chill Pretty Hair Studio to a

193

:

lounge because when we grew, you know.

194

:

Yes.

195

:

Right.

196

:

We changed that.

197

:

So that's about the

only thing that changed.

198

:

Tyler: That makes more sense.

199

:

One thing I've noticed, too, when I

was telling people that we were coming

200

:

up here for our third anniversary

of Surf City, I was like, "Everyone

201

:

else is coming up to Chill Pretty."

202

:

You bring a lot of Wilmingtonians up here.

203

:

Like- Yes … that's very impressive.

204

:

Girls: Yes.

205

:

Yeah.

206

:

We do.

207

:

Most of my clients all followed me here.

208

:

Oh, wow.

209

:

And I have a very good clientele.

210

:

Mm-hmm.

211

:

Very loyal.

212

:

I'm very blessed for all of them.

213

:

Yeah.

214

:

They've all got to know

Michelle and all the girls here,

215

:

and they've stayed with me.

216

:

I mean-

217

:

Tyler: That's awesome.

218

:

Chris: I love it

219

:

Girls: Southport, Raleigh, Carolina Beach.

220

:

Oh, wow.

221

:

Like- Oh, you've

222

:

Chris: done all the spots

223

:

… Girls: and they all drive here.

224

:

Chris: Yeah.

225

:

Girls: Yeah.

226

:

Chris: I hear, like, if you have a good

hairstylist, you'll just go and meet

227

:

them 'cause I have one of my coworkers…

228

:

Tyler: Oh, you're good.

229

:

Girls: Yeah, you're good.

230

:

Chris: Yeah.

231

:

No, one of my coworkers, every

fourth Wednesday she drives to

232

:

Raleigh to get her hair done.

233

:

And I'm like- Geez yeah.

234

:

But she's lived in Wilmington for,

like, I think five years now, and she's

235

:

like, "No, this is my hairstylist.

236

:

This is where I'm going."

237

:

And I'm like, it makes sense 'cause

most guys, if you have a real barber,

238

:

you are like, "This is my barber."

239

:

Girls: Yep.

240

:

Chris: I will drive up to

45 minutes to get a haircut.

241

:

Girls: And that's another point, too.

242

:

Chris: That is a great question.

243

:

Tyler: Yeah.

244

:

Is there something that you

notice that, like, makes people

245

:

wanna come to your, like, over

246

:

Girls: and over again?

247

:

So that's what I was gonna say.

248

:

One thing that we pride ourselves

on is how we make people feel when

249

:

they come through these doors.

250

:

Tyler: Mm-hmm.

251

:

Girls: Yeah.

252

:

We're just, like, gen-

it's just a genuine…

253

:

Like, we're ourselves.

254

:

We don't try to, you know, I don't know.

255

:

It's like we just are,

we just welcome them in.

256

:

If, sometimes if even their ba- like,

we'll hold their babies for them

257

:

while they're getting their hair done.

258

:

Yeah.

259

:

And, you know, we always tell moms,

like, "Please, if you just, you

260

:

know- Need a day out or a minute.

261

:

Because there's a lot of military

families around here- Yes.

262

:

Right … and their husbands are

deployed, and they're lonely.

263

:

Chris: So building a great community

and experience is something that's very

264

:

hard to do, especially, I think, in a

world today where everyone is online.

265

:

And it…

266

:

So is that just, like, the vibe that you

two ladies have done and built with the

267

:

team of, like, different hair stylists?

268

:

Or, like, what do you think was

the catalyst to kinda do that?

269

:

Girls: Well, w- I was gonna say, we

kind of started with Katie, right, with

270

:

yoga- Yes … when we first opened.

271

:

Katie had came in and she was

like, "Can I just do yoga here?"

272

:

And we were like, "Sure."

273

:

You know.

274

:

And so that kind of formed a little bit

of a community- Mm-hmm … and then…

275

:

And we do yoga once a week.

276

:

Tyler: Oh, wow,

277

:

Girls: okay.

278

:

In, in here.

279

:

Tyler: So you still do?

280

:

Girls: Mm-hmm.

281

:

Tyler: Oh, wow, okay.

282

:

Girls: Yeah, so when the girls are doing

yoga, they come back the next day and

283

:

they're like, "Well, when I was in this

pose, I was really looking at that dress."

284

:

"So I wanted to see that."

285

:

Tyler: Nice.

286

:

Girls: So they come

back for- Yeah … that.

287

:

But just the…

288

:

Just when people walk in the

door, they're, they say, like,

289

:

"It just feels great in here."

290

:

Mm-hmm.

291

:

There's just…

292

:

y- you know.

293

:

So we're…

294

:

We speak to everyo- every single person-

Mm-hmm … that comes through the door.

295

:

Brittany: Right.

296

:

Girls: You know, greet them.

297

:

'Cause you can go into a lot of

places and you're not greeted-

298

:

Tyler: Yeah

299

:

… Girls: or- Yeah … made to feel…

300

:

So many people have just checked

out with, like, human interaction.

301

:

Tyler: Mm-hmm.

302

:

Girls: And people ask us all the

time about growing online, and

303

:

we are starting to grow online.

304

:

We're, we just are getting

our website redesigned.

305

:

Okay.

306

:

We just got rebranded.

307

:

We invested this year in that,

but we really wanted to focus

308

:

on our brick-and-mortar first.

309

:

Yeah.

310

:

And-

311

:

Chris: Which is smart.

312

:

Girls: And then- 'Cause

that feels right for down…

313

:

like, in this area.

314

:

Yeah.

315

:

It's very- Mm-hmm … community based,

so we were like, "We wanna just make

316

:

sure that we focus on that-" Yeah

317

:

"and then the online can come after."

318

:

Chris: Well, and the hard part, too,

is, like, if you don't focus on the

319

:

brick-and-mortar and then your online

blows up and then everyone shows up

320

:

in sto- in shop and the shop isn't put

together, then, like, you lose that

321

:

experience because they saw it online

and they show up and it was down.

322

:

Yeah.

323

:

Yeah.

324

:

But if you're building it and doing

a great setup and you have built an

325

:

amazing community, then everyone feels

it when they walk in, and then the

326

:

website kinda just, like, adds to it.

327

:

Tyler: Yeah.

328

:

Yeah.

329

:

You did it right, too.

330

:

Like, my background's in

operations, so they have what's

331

:

called the moment of truth.

332

:

And there's different parts of every

interaction that you have with a business.

333

:

And when you go to fix something or you

go to improve something or optimize it,

334

:

you wanna start with the last thing first

because that's the last interaction that

335

:

they have with your business, and you

want that interaction to be the most

336

:

memorable, the most positive, the one

that's gonna make them come back again.

337

:

Because usually the first part of

that moment of truth gets cut out

338

:

because you no longer have to market

to that person because you did such

339

:

a good job in your actual location,

they come right back through.

340

:

Oh.

341

:

So yeah, it's just- So we did

it right, Michelle … the-

342

:

Girls: Yeah, we did it right.

343

:

Tyler: Yeah.

344

:

You're, you're right.

345

:

Didn't even know.

346

:

Yeah.

347

:

The intuition.

348

:

It's about going back to your intuition.

349

:

Yeah, yeah.

350

:

When you have a good intuition, you, you

don't need to go to school for it, right?

351

:

Yeah.

352

:

Like, you just know what

you're supposed to do.

353

:

Yeah.

354

:

Girls: And that's how I feel like

this whole journey has kind of been.

355

:

We kind of have just gone with what

we felt right instead of being like,

356

:

"Oh, everybody's done it this way."

357

:

We're just like, "Let's do it the way

that we think is best to, you know,

358

:

serve our community and- Yeah … how

we feel is-" And we've really s-

359

:

stayed true to, like, ourselves too.

360

:

Brittany: Mm-hmm.

361

:

Girls: We were, we've been

approached by investors.

362

:

We've been approached by franchising it,

and we've kinda just, we're like, "No."

363

:

Right.

364

:

Like, we're just, you know- Yeah.

365

:

Happy … it hasn't always been easy,

but- Yeah … we see a bigger picture,

366

:

and we see where we wanna go with it.

367

:

Right.

368

:

And, you know-

369

:

I feel like if we open up another

Chill Pretty, then we can't copy, like-

370

:

Chris: We can't have both of y'all- Yeah,

371

:

Girls: yeah … at,

372

:

Chris: yeah, at another location.

373

:

Girls: Yeah, or our employees or- Yeah

374

:

you know, like our managers

and- Yeah … our stylists.

375

:

It just would never be the same.

376

:

Yeah, that would be hard.

377

:

Tyler: Right.

378

:

Yeah, you wanna keep

that, the IP to yourself.

379

:

You don't wanna have a bad situation

in, in Wilmington, and they come up

380

:

over here, and they're like, "Ah,

that one wasn't any good down there-

381

:

Yes … so I'm not gonna go to this one."

382

:

Girls: So instead- Yeah … we're like,

"Yeah, just make the trip down here.

383

:

It'll be worth it."

384

:

Tyler: Right.

385

:

Exactly.

386

:

Girls: Yeah.

387

:

Tyler: It's probably more

beneficial for you that way, too.

388

:

So if you have someone coming up from

Wilmington, they wanna make it worth

389

:

it, so they're g- I would assume

they're probably gonna stay a little

390

:

bit longer, buy a little bit more,

get, kinda get the whole experience.

391

:

Girls: And also, there's just so many

new businesses in the growth around here.

392

:

Like- Mm-hmm … it's

such a cool little town.

393

:

Chris: Yeah, we were talking.

394

:

There's, like, six or seven different

boutiques that are in here, and

395

:

it's just kinda cool to see that

they're all hitting different niches.

396

:

And you're right.

397

:

They're all different.

398

:

It's like-

399

:

Tyler: Yeah

400

:

… Chris: like the people who go

to Mayfair go because they're

401

:

gonna shop a few different spots.

402

:

Right.

403

:

Just like, I feel like the people coming

up here are gonna shop multiple spots, you

404

:

know, get their hair done, go get a drink

while the wife is getting her hair done.

405

:

Like, you can make it a whole day trip.

406

:

Girls: Yes.

407

:

Chris: Yeah.

408

:

Girls: Which is really cool.

409

:

And there's like, yeah, there's

lots to do in the strip that you,

410

:

I mean, people, like, they're like,

"We could stay here for hours."

411

:

Like, yeah.

412

:

Yes.

413

:

You could start in the morning.

414

:

And then High Tides just opened up.

415

:

Right.

416

:

Yeah.

417

:

So, and it's like right there.

418

:

You can just walk right there- Mm-hmm

419

:

to it.

420

:

Tyler: There's something about this

strip, too, that the community base just

421

:

really came together, and like, you can

kinda tell who fits in with the community

422

:

and who doesn't because the ones who

don't, it feels like leave pretty quick.

423

:

And the ones that have stayed have

stayed, and that's kinda why, like,

424

:

every time Brittany brings us up,

every, every year, we, we come in

425

:

here in the shopping center, and

everyone has the same awesome vibe.

426

:

Like, you want to hang

out with all of you.

427

:

Girls: Yeah.

428

:

Yeah.

429

:

Tyler: Like, which is really neat,

and it's something very unique to

430

:

this area 'cause I haven't really

experienced it anywhere else.

431

:

Girls: It is very true.

432

:

That is very true.

433

:

Yeah.

434

:

We all support each other and- You're

435

:

Chris: right.

436

:

I love it

437

:

… Girls: I don't feel like

there's competition, you know?

438

:

Like- Yeah … the other

stores aren't our competition.

439

:

They're our friends.

440

:

Yeah.

441

:

Chris: Right.

442

:

Exactly.

443

:

Girls: Everyone's, like, wants the best

for ev- each person, which is really cool.

444

:

Chris: Good.

445

:

Yeah.

446

:

So

447

:

Chris thoughts, I have these quite often.

448

:

They're random questions.

449

:

So in a boutique, I know you guys

have to buy outfits and stuff,

450

:

like, seasons ahead of time.

451

:

How do you figure out what's

gonna be, like, your, your hero

452

:

collection so far in advance?

453

:

Girls: So- We'll see … we

are more of, like, a basic-

454

:

Chris: Okay.

455

:

Girls: We, yeah, that's about-

We, we don't, like, we don't buy,

456

:

like, really fancy dresses or, I

mean, we have some dresses in here.

457

:

Yeah.

458

:

Mm-hmm.

459

:

Pretty dresses, but we

are a very casual, store.

460

:

We like to buy things that you

can chill in and feel pretty.

461

:

You know?

462

:

Yeah.

463

:

That's-

464

:

Tyler: Makes sense now.

465

:

Girls: Yeah.

466

:

But we do take like twice a year

we take a trip over to Vegas.

467

:

Okay.

468

:

And we do all of our buying there because

we found that that sto- like, the style

469

:

that they have, the, all the vendors

that they have there that we really like.

470

:

Okay.

471

:

So, we do a little bit of

planning before we get there.

472

:

Chris: Gotcha.

473

:

Girls: And then we go and buy

everything for the season.

474

:

Chris: So you do the Vegas

market, not the one in Atlanta?

475

:

Girls: No.

476

:

Okay.

477

:

Yeah.

478

:

We, we went to a couple of those and

Michelle and I, we get very overwhelmed.

479

:

Chris: I heard that one's ridiculous.

480

:

And It's

481

:

Girls: like 30 stories high.

482

:

Like- That's crazy … that's

of different levels.

483

:

Chris: Yeah.

484

:

Girls: So this one's just one story,

and it's just everything's laid out.

485

:

We know where to go.

486

:

Okay.

487

:

And yeah.

488

:

And then, like our Kéra- We carry

Kérastase- Yeah … so we have

489

:

reps for, like, our hair stuff and-

490

:

Tyler: Right.

491

:

We-

492

:

Girls: So we don't have to buy

that in, at a market, you know?

493

:

Tyler: Gotcha.

494

:

For the people who might be listening

that live in Wilmington and haven't

495

:

come in, and aren't actually

watching, can't see what's behind

496

:

us, what would you say your style is?

497

:

Girls: Hmm.

498

:

Hmm.

499

:

I was gonna say, it's like, I don't

know, a good pair of jeans with a good

500

:

basic, but I'm also like, I … We

could dress you up where if you had

501

:

an event to go to, that we would

have a dress for that, you know?

502

:

Tyler: Yeah.

503

:

Girls: So it's, like, elevated

when it needs to be, but we can

504

:

also- Little Free People vibes.

505

:

Yeah.

506

:

Yeah.

507

:

Chris: Mm.

508

:

Tyler: Mm-hmm.

509

:

Girls: Definitely think Free People or

510

:

Chris: It's, it's funny 'cause,

like, I'm looking around, and to

511

:

me- Yes … I remember when Free

People was, like, the end-all be-all.

512

:

Mm-hmm.

513

:

And now I'm like, Free

People is, like, the basic.

514

:

Mm-hmm.

515

:

And I feel like you guys are, like,

a step above because you're … Just

516

:

looking through your … The quality

of your merchandise looks really good.

517

:

Girls: I was gonna say, we're really

big on, Quality … that's why we

518

:

love to go to, like, to market-

Just- … so we're able to s-

519

:

like, really find all the pieces.

520

:

We love to feel everything and make sure

that we bring back, like, really- Right

521

:

high-end quality pieces for a good price.

522

:

Affordable- Yeah … pricing.

523

:

Good.

524

:

For an affordable

525

:

Tyler: price.

526

:

Chris: So Brittany, off to the side,

was like, "You can see- … both

527

:

ladies kind of represented within

the, the vibe of the store.

528

:

So on this side behind us is all

nice and, like, neutrals and blacks.

529

:

Yeah.

530

:

And then the other side is nice,

bright colors and more patterns.

531

:

Mm-hmm.

532

:

Which, similar to Tyler and I, we

did not do this on purpose- Super

533

:

neutral, bright and colorful.

534

:

But I th- I love it because this is

something that you could do at any time.

535

:

Like, most people are gonna come in

and get a neutral, but it's summertime.

536

:

Mm.

537

:

So, like, I'm gonna show up and look

through and be like, "Oh, what do I want

538

:

to get my wife that's, like- Colorful

539

:

full of color?"

540

:

Yeah.

541

:

Girls: Yeah.

542

:

Chris: But nighttime hits,

and you wanna go back.

543

:

So.

544

:

Girls: Yeah, and we also have,

like, I feel like a lot of

545

:

pieces that are versatile.

546

:

Like, you can mix and match.

547

:

Like, if when we try to help people

shop we're like, "Hey, these pants

548

:

won't just go with this shirt.

549

:

If you have this piece at home, that

piece at home, we can also mix and match."

550

:

So people feel like they're

just getting a bunch of options-

551

:

Chris: Mm-hmm

552

:

… Girls: in, you know, five pieces

that they purchased from us.

553

:

Chris: Feels like you're doing more

styling- Yeah … versus just, "Hey, we

554

:

put together some clothes that we liked.

555

:

Look at it, buy it, and go home."

556

:

Girls: Yeah.

557

:

Chris: You're like, "Oh, we've seen

that you purchased this, this, and this.

558

:

This would also stack with that outfit."

559

:

Girls: Yeah.

560

:

Yes.

561

:

If you have a denim jacket at home, it

would look great on these types of pieces.

562

:

Things like that we always like-

563

:

Tyler: As you can tell, Chris is our house

fashion correspondent that we keep in.

564

:

Yeah.

565

:

So . Yes.

566

:

Girls: Yes.

567

:

Chris: So I worked at Buckle for

a few years, and then I've had-

568

:

Girls: Oh, okay

569

:

Chris: I've been in retail

for, like, 15 years.

570

:

Oh, wow.

571

:

So that's why I'm like, oh.

572

:

Girls: Okay.

573

:

That's cool.

574

:

Chris: Yes.

575

:

That- Thank

576

:

Girls: you … that's how

you noticed our colors.

577

:

Yeah.

578

:

Chris: Yes . Complement.

579

:

Girls: We really try.

580

:

Our racks are, you

know, our pride and joy.

581

:

We try to always make them look really

582

:

Chris: pretty.

583

:

Yeah.

584

:

There's one thing that my, I don't

know, when I walk into a sto- a store

585

:

of any kind, like a boutique or, like,

a big brand shop, I, like, look and

586

:

see, like, how is it coordinated and

color-wise, and I'm like, I really

587

:

like the, the color transition.

588

:

Girls: And we didn't get to

reset the racks yesterday.

589

:

Yeah . We usually do that on Monday.

590

:

Chris: Oh, yeah.

591

:

Girls: But we had a ton

of new inventory come in.

592

:

Yeah.

593

:

So.

594

:

Chris: And it, you were saying, like,

you guys get new stuff all the time.

595

:

Girls: All the time.

596

:

Yeah.

597

:

' Chris: Cause I know some-

598

:

Girls: Like weekly.

599

:

Weekly

600

:

… Chris: so weekly new product,

so that means people should come

601

:

visit on a more regular basis.

602

:

Girls: Yeah.

603

:

Chris: I know some boutiques are only

getting it, like, every couple weeks

604

:

or, like, once a month depending

on, like, how big the space is, but.

605

:

Girls: And we really don't reorder a lot.

606

:

We like to keep, you know-

607

:

Chris: Mm-hmm

608

:

… Girls: a six, and then- Okay … once

that's gone, it's gone, 'cause

609

:

we don't want people to wearing

the same thing around here.

610

:

Yeah.

611

:

It's a small town.

612

:

Sure

613

:

. Chris: Yes.

614

:

You know?

615

:

So are you doing doubles small, medium,

large, or are you doing extra small up?

616

:

Girls: So- some extra small, not

as much, but small, medium, large.

617

:

It just- Okay … depends on the vendor-

618

:

Chris: Okay

619

:

… Girls: that we're ordering from.

620

:

Chris: Mm, yeah.

621

:

Girls: Yeah.

622

:

Chris: I didn't realize, like, in

general- I am talking to my mic.

623

:

No, I always drop my phone or

my microphone all the time.

624

:

So for those who don't know, like, when

it comes to making clothing, anything

625

:

that's outside of small, medium, large

is harder to make- Yeah … because

626

:

you're, like, cutting the proportions.

627

:

Mm-hmm.

628

:

And I did not realize that

'cause I was always like, "Oh

629

:

yeah, why don't you have an XL?"

630

:

And they're like, "Yeah,

that's an added piece."

631

:

Yeah.

632

:

And a lot of brands don't do that.

633

:

Girls: Yeah.

634

:

A lot of them stay in

that small, medium, large.

635

:

But we, we found, like, kind of working

around that, that we can bring in

636

:

different brands that fit different ways.

637

:

Mm-hmm.

638

:

So we'll have a brand that's a

small, but it can fit as an extra

639

:

small or vice versa, you know?

640

:

Chris: Yeah.

641

:

Girls: So.

642

:

I

643

:

Chris: like it.

644

:

Girls: We did go to sourcing the last

time we were at market, or the time

645

:

before, and we eventually want to start

cutting some of our, our own things.

646

:

Chris: That'll be cool.

647

:

Girls: And that's one thing that we will

do is we'll s- it'll go from, like, extra

648

:

small to an extra large when we cut.

649

:

And how that works is you buy one color.

650

:

Mm-hmm.

651

:

And maybe we'll do,

like, a set or something.

652

:

Ah.

653

:

And a shirt and a bottom, and then we

can control, like, what sizes we get.

654

:

Chris: I like that.

655

:

Girls: Mm-hmm.

656

:

Yeah.

657

:

Tyler: That is- A

question for both of you.

658

:

Outside of the clients, when you

come in every morning, what makes

659

:

you most excited about showing up?

660

:

Girls: So for me, it's just

honestly, like the girls that we

661

:

have working for us, it's like-

662

:

Tyler: Mm

663

:

Girls: become like,

it's like a family here.

664

:

Yeah.

665

:

And it never feels like it's work.

666

:

It always feels like I'm just, I don't

know, coming here to hang out and-

667

:

Right … we kinda, even though we

have like things to do and, you know,

668

:

decisions to make and stuff like that,

it always just feels like this is not

669

:

my jo- like, I'm, this is not a job.

670

:

It's just- Right … something

that I really love doing

671

:

with, with Amber, you know?

672

:

Absolutely.

673

:

It's almost like sometimes I'm like,

"Oh my gosh, am I, Monday's here.

674

:

Thank God I'm going to work."

675

:

Tyler: Right.

676

:

Girls: You know?

677

:

That's

678

:

Tyler: awesome.

679

:

Girls: The opposite of some

people, like, "Oh, Monday's here."

680

:

I'm like, "Ugh, I can't wait to

get in there and, you know- Exactly

681

:

see what we're getting in new."

682

:

And- I

683

:

Tyler: like

684

:

Girls: that … and also just like

the people that we get to meet,

685

:

like we meet people from all over

686

:

and yeah, just like the genuine

connections that we get to

687

:

make with people from all over,

and then when they come back.

688

:

Right.

689

:

You know, it's just like- Every

summer … and we usually remember them.

690

:

Yeah.

691

:

And they're just like-

692

:

Chris: Oh,

693

:

Girls: that's good … "How

do you remember that?

694

:

Like, I was going to my…"

695

:

And that's just like genuine, like,

that's the genuine connection that

696

:

we get to make with them, you know,

is remembering that small piece.

697

:

Right.

698

:

And then they're like, "Wow, that was

really special that they remembered."

699

:

And then, you know, so.

700

:

Yeah, we have clients or customers

that come in every summer.

701

:

They were, you know, the first

summer we opened they were here,

702

:

and they still, every summer.

703

:

Chris: That's nice.

704

:

Girls: And the season's getting

ready to start, so I'm sure

705

:

we'll be seeing a lot of them.

706

:

A lot of them, yeah.

707

:

Chris: Yeah.

708

:

And that's part of the reason why we show

up this week each year, is because we

709

:

know it's like things are about to get-

Yeah … real busy, and like doing a reset

710

:

after Mother's Day is kinda hard, and

then gets you right before Memorial Day.

711

:

So- Yeah … thank you guys

for letting us come out.

712

:

Yeah.

713

:

Girls: Yeah.

714

:

Thanks for having us.

715

:

It's been fun.

716

:

Chris: So another random question from the

Chris side is what's your favorite color?

717

:

Girls: Green.

718

:

Hmm.

719

:

Like gray.

720

:

Gray.

721

:

Chris: Gray.

722

:

Yeah.

723

:

See, never would've guessed that.

724

:

Yeah.

725

:

Definitely wouldn't have guessed that.

726

:

Girls: I, I know, it's like- I

would've thought it was the opposite

727

:

it's not like de- What's

your favorite color?

728

:

Like, not gray.

729

:

But like, okay, like, what's that?

730

:

Chris: Heathered gray is what I would

731

:

POD00123: say,

732

:

Girls: yeah.

733

:

Yeah.

734

:

Like, I, okay, maybe just

neutral tones in general.

735

:

Anything neutral.

736

:

Chris: We're not judging.

737

:

But when you- Gray … if you're watching

the video, you can kinda see, like, I

738

:

was not expecting you to be like, "Gray."

739

:

Girls: Well, I do hair, so I always-

Yes … have to wear black so I can

740

:

Chris: di- Why?

741

:

Oh, because if you-

742

:

' Girls: Cause if we get bleach on

our clothes and stuff, you can-

743

:

Yeah … color it in with a Sharpie.

744

:

Well, I like always, yeah.

745

:

I was gonna say, I always

used to wear, like, white.

746

:

Oh.

747

:

And then I did that, like, color theory.

748

:

Chris: Yeah.

749

:

Girls: White is not my color.

750

:

Like, it's more of, like,

creams and stuff like that.

751

:

So I'm like, "All right."

752

:

Interesting.

753

:

"No more white."

754

:

Chris: I should probably do that, because

I keep wearing the same, like, bright,

755

:

poppy colors, and I'm sure I shouldn't.

756

:

But I'm going to.

757

:

Girls: Yeah.

758

:

So.

759

:

Chris: Have you done the color theory?

760

:

Girls: No, I haven't, but I should.

761

:

But she's really good with color.

762

:

Yeah.

763

:

Like…

764

:

Chris: I've, you should do a

pop-up and have a color theory-

765

:

Color theory … person here.

766

:

Girls: We should, with the materials.

767

:

Yeah.

768

:

I could probably do it.

769

:

I mean, I know- Yeah, they,

I didn't do it like that.

770

:

They just have, like, an app, so I- Oh.

771

:

Chris: Yeah

772

:

… Girls: put it on there, and

they just said, like, I, all

773

:

these colors are horrible.

774

:

Do not wear them again.

775

:

And all these colors are great.

776

:

So yeah.

777

:

Tyler: Huh.

778

:

Kind of turn it around a little bit.

779

:

I know you guys just moved

into this new location.

780

:

Mm-hmm.

781

:

Not new location, but expanded into

this location, so you had this growth.

782

:

Do you have your eyes on any other

growth outside of that since kinda

783

:

turning down the investors, kinda

turning down the franchising model?

784

:

Do you have anything outside of that?

785

:

Are you happy where you're at right now?

786

:

You just wanna make the

best of what you have?

787

:

Girls: Yeah, I don't know.

788

:

I don't know.

789

:

I mean, if the unit ever-

790

:

Tyler: Right

791

:

… Girls: became available next

door, then, I mean, I don't know.

792

:

We've talked about doing some spa things.

793

:

Tyler: Oh, nice.

794

:

Girls: Yeah.

795

:

Chris: That

796

:

makes sense.

797

:

Girls: Yeah.

798

:

Maybe do

799

:

I don't know.

800

:

Chris: Spa scene.

801

:

Yeah.

802

:

So for us men, what do you

mean by, like, spa things?

803

:

Girls: Definitely, like, facials.

804

:

Okay.

805

:

Like, yeah … pedicures.

806

:

Massages

807

:

Chris: Okay

808

:

Girls: I don't know, maybe

branch out, I don't know.

809

:

I don't know, think of

something different.

810

:

Yeah.

811

:

Chris: Yeah.

812

:

Girls: Yeah, I don't know yet.

813

:

Tyler: Keeping it interesting.

814

:

Girls: Yeah.

815

:

Yeah.

816

:

I was gonna say, kinda like

throw around the idea, like a-

817

:

almost like a cool house spa.

818

:

Chris: Okay.

819

:

Girls: Yeah.

820

:

I have ideas in the back of my head.

821

:

Chris: Yeah.

822

:

Don't, don't worry.

823

:

Always.

824

:

The three of us have so many ideas.

825

:

Yeah.

826

:

Any time I talk to these

three, I, I always have like a,

827

:

another idea that shows up, and

I'm like, "This is not good."

828

:

My, my wife is happy that I don't

make enough money to just start

829

:

new businesses all the time.

830

:

Yeah,

831

:

Girls: yeah.

832

:

Tyler: There's a lot of money out there.

833

:

We can get it for you, Chris.

834

:

Chris: Oh.

835

:

Girls: I know.

836

:

It's like every time though we talk,

like I, I just, you know, like, I was

837

:

like, "Oh, we should get a Pilates

studio," and then there came Aaron.

838

:

Tyler: Right.

839

:

Girls: And I was like, "They should

open up a really cool bowling place."

840

:

There goes

841

:

Chris: High

842

:

Girls: Tides.

843

:

Yeah.

844

:

And I was like, I just have to

keep ve- like saying this and

845

:

manifesting it- Right … because

people just keep opening cool things.

846

:

Yes.

847

:

And I love it.

848

:

So I don't know what else we need.

849

:

I don't, I- It's- That's

my only two that I have.

850

:

Right.

851

:

Chris: Which I think those things

and tell him all the time like,

852

:

"Man, you know, it'd be great if we

had opened a bar with this style,"

853

:

and then someone else opens it.

854

:

I'm like, "Good."

855

:

Now I can, I can pay them for drinks-

They just enjoy it … and I don't

856

:

Girls: have to.

857

:

Yeah.

858

:

But isn't that, it's kinda funny

how you like say it and then you're

859

:

like, "Wow," you know, it came about.

860

:

It's cool.

861

:

Chris: Yes.

862

:

Girls: Yeah, Michelle wants

to open up a what is it?

863

:

Coyote Ugly- Oh … where

they da- dance on the bar.

864

:

Chris: Oh,

865

:

Girls: yeah.

866

:

Slap people if you order water.

867

:

Yeah.

868

:

I was like, I would like it to be

a little bit more high-end, but

869

:

I definitely think a Coyote Ugly

could- … have some fun down here.

870

:

But like- Yeah … you know,

higher end Coyote Ugly.

871

:

Chris: It's, I mean, this-

872

:

Girls: Membership maybe.

873

:

… Chris: there's room- Right.

874

:

… for another bar.

875

:

Like-

876

:

Girls: Room

877

:

… Chris: every time I talk to people

up here, they're like, "Oh, yeah."

878

:

I'm like, "You typically

go to Hidden Ships-

879

:

Girls: Yeah

880

:

… Chris: or you can go to High Tides now

or you're going to the Trailer Bar.

881

:

Girls: Yeah.

882

:

Chris: So like, oh wait, there's a new

one that opened up on, on the island.

883

:

I forgot the name of it.

884

:

My little sister works there.

885

:

Salty

886

:

Girls: Shack or Surf Shack?

887

:

Oh Coconut Cove is getting

ready to open another.

888

:

Yeah, that one and then- Oh, yeah.

889

:

Chris: So, so many options.

890

:

Yeah.

891

:

But there's plenty of room.

892

:

Girls: For a Coyote Ugly.

893

:

Chris: Just saying.

894

:

Exactly, yeah.

895

:

Tyler: Especially with all

the growth that's happening.

896

:

Girls: Yeah.

897

:

Boom.

898

:

Chris: Like- We'll send Brittany there.

899

:

What?

900

:

Coyote Ugly bar.

901

:

Oh.

902

:

Girls: she's

903

:

Chris: gonna

904

:

Girls: sing.

905

:

See, I'm introverted,

906

:

Chris: but

907

:

Girls: I wanna dance Well,

I, I just wanna open it.

908

:

I wanna party hard.

909

:

I don't wanna work

910

:

there.

911

:

You should go to Vegas with her.

912

:

Oh.

913

:

You're right.

914

:

Silent partner.

915

:

I would…

916

:

I just want the experience.

917

:

I think it would be really cool with,

like, you know, karaoke and I don't know.

918

:

Chris: I love it.

919

:

Girls: Yeah.

920

:

Chris: Don't worry.

921

:

I'm very inter- introverted

also, so- Yeah … it's okay.

922

:

Girls: I'm introverted,

but I like to have fun.

923

:

Chris: So the question I asked was, when

you have a group of friends that you talk

924

:

to, and any time you leave that kind of

group and that conversation, it kind of

925

:

inspires you to do more and kind of grow.

926

:

Because all of us are in very

different sectors right now.

927

:

Because you two are in the same

sector, do you have any friends that

928

:

are outside of, like, just these

four walls that help inspire you to

929

:

do new things and kind of grow or,

like, just reach a little bit further?

930

:

Girls: I mean, I think my

friends are very, like…

931

:

a huge part of our success.

932

:

Yeah.

933

:

But I would say that my two

children are definitely what

934

:

makes me want to keep going.

935

:

Right.

936

:

And not keep going, but keep, like,

937

:

expanding and growing and…

938

:

'Cause I would really love for my

daughter, Alice, to take this over

939

:

sh- they're, and Michelle- Yeah

940

:

has, she already talks about how,

she's like, "Am I the boss yet?"

941

:

I'm like not exactly."

942

:

Just yet.

943

:

Well, she has a little girl too.

944

:

She's like, "Can I

945

:

act like the boss?"

946

:

I'm like, "Oh, that depends."

947

:

If, you know.

948

:

So Scarlet and Alice, Scarlet's

Michelle's, Alice is mine, and

949

:

they're usually here with us.

950

:

Nice.

951

:

Yeah.

952

:

But they know how to check out people.

953

:

They know how to, like, take things

to the dress- I mean, they're

954

:

really, they're really funny.

955

:

And, yeah, I was kind of gonna say

the same thing, that my, like, for

956

:

my kids, I just, like, aspire to

be the best role model that I could

957

:

be for them, and just sh- show them

that, like, if there's something

958

:

that you want, you can definitely,

you know, you can accomplish it.

959

:

Yeah.

960

:

It might take some hard work and

stuff like that, but you'll get there.

961

:

Tyler: That's awesome.

962

:

Girls: And I used to have, like,

a lot of guilt for working a lot.

963

:

Mm-hmm … my son, he's

gonna be a senior this year.

964

:

Yeah.

965

:

I had him young.

966

:

Mm-hmm.

967

:

And Boone and it was- Now that

he's older, I mean, I feel like

968

:

his work ethic has definitely…

969

:

Chris: He, he bases it off of you.

970

:

Yeah.

971

:

Girls: He sees that

you're working a bunch.

972

:

He sees…

973

:

Yeah.

974

:

Mm-hmm.

975

:

And he sees, like, the life

that I've provided for him.

976

:

Right.

977

:

And, like, we travel, and he's always

been able to do travel sports and, you

978

:

know, and he sees that, and I think…

979

:

I don't feel…

980

:

I, like I said, I used to feel

guilt, like, "Oh, I should be

981

:

at home more with him," but I

really didn't have a choice, so.

982

:

Tyler: Right.

983

:

Girls: It's been really cool to, like…

984

:

He appreciates it- Good … a

lot more now that he's older.

985

:

Tyler: Right.

986

:

Girls: Yeah.

987

:

Tyler: Yeah, you can appreciate those

things better when you're older, and

988

:

you can look back on, like, "Oh, these

are actually the things that I've

989

:

picked up along the way that, like,

my mom did or my parents did- Yes

990

:

or whatever, and that, that maybe…

991

:

And I think that's really neat

having that someone, especially that

992

:

parent in your life to look up to

and be like, "Hey, you know what?

993

:

Like, she had this dream.

994

:

She went after it.

995

:

It was successful.

996

:

Like, I can do that now."

997

:

Yeah.

998

:

So I think that's something

really powerful that really

999

:

only you can provide for him.

:

00:30:26,552 --> 00:30:26,952

Girls: Yeah.

:

00:30:27,382 --> 00:30:27,602

Yeah.

:

00:30:27,602 --> 00:30:28,592

It's, it's cool.

:

00:30:28,642 --> 00:30:32,282

And then the little ones Yeah.

:

00:30:32,342 --> 00:30:33,902

Scarlett and Alice, they're funny.

:

00:30:34,022 --> 00:30:35,832

They actually made us

go viral on Instagram.

:

00:30:36,622 --> 00:30:37,072

Tyler: No way.

:

00:30:37,362 --> 00:30:37,612

Yeah.

:

00:30:37,662 --> 00:30:40,652

Girls: Yeah, they had a

reel that had, like, 4.2

:

00:30:40,652 --> 00:30:41,542

million views.

:

00:30:41,542 --> 00:30:42,112

Oh, wow.

:

00:30:42,342 --> 00:30:45,182

And that's how we got such a big

following- Yeah … on Instagram.

:

00:30:45,602 --> 00:30:46,292

Tyler: Oh, I love it.

:

00:30:46,362 --> 00:30:46,692

Yeah.

:

00:30:46,692 --> 00:30:47,062

That's awesome.

:

00:30:47,062 --> 00:30:47,572

What'd they do?

:

00:30:47,822 --> 00:30:49,272

Girls: They were checking out a customer.

:

00:30:49,602 --> 00:30:49,962

Tyler: Really?

:

00:30:50,462 --> 00:30:50,542

Girls: Yeah.

:

00:30:51,232 --> 00:30:54,682

But they just loved how Alice was, like,

so, you know, s- she's like, "She…

:

00:30:54,702 --> 00:30:55,292

How old is she?

:

00:30:55,632 --> 00:30:57,252

And she knows how to check

someone out like that?"

:

00:30:57,782 --> 00:30:58,582

I'm like, "You don't understand."

:

00:30:58,642 --> 00:31:01,672

Even, like, during the expansion,

I mean, they were, they were

:

00:31:01,672 --> 00:31:02,912

liter- they lived here with us.

:

00:31:02,912 --> 00:31:04,022

Like- Yeah.

:

00:31:04,022 --> 00:31:04,522

They lived here.

:

00:31:04,522 --> 00:31:04,922

Yeah.

:

00:31:05,012 --> 00:31:09,322

My daughter was like, "If we have to go

to one more tile store- … I, I'm done.

:

00:31:09,542 --> 00:31:10,622

Just don't get tile, Mom.

:

00:31:10,622 --> 00:31:12,712

Just, just paint it a color

or something," you know?

:

00:31:12,902 --> 00:31:12,952

Right.

:

00:31:13,002 --> 00:31:13,552

But they just- Wait, did you get

:

00:31:13,552 --> 00:31:14,102

Chris: tiles?

:

00:31:14,602 --> 00:31:15,092

Girls: Yes.

:

00:31:15,102 --> 00:31:18,392

There's, We have tiles

in the shampoo room.

:

00:31:19,322 --> 00:31:19,472

Chris: Makes

:

00:31:19,472 --> 00:31:19,492

Girls: sense.

:

00:31:19,492 --> 00:31:20,522

Yeah, like a backsplash.

:

00:31:20,692 --> 00:31:21,262

Chris: Gotcha.

:

00:31:21,262 --> 00:31:21,457

Yeah.

:

00:31:21,457 --> 00:31:21,652

Okay.

:

00:31:21,652 --> 00:31:21,672

Yeah.

:

00:31:21,732 --> 00:31:25,872

Girls: But we picked everything

out in here, like, we had a…

:

00:31:25,992 --> 00:31:31,672

We had some help, like advice from one

of our really, really awesome customers.

:

00:31:31,702 --> 00:31:32,382

Mm-hmm.

:

00:31:32,382 --> 00:31:32,392

Nice.

:

00:31:32,392 --> 00:31:34,862

And but we had- So fun … fun

picking everything out and all

:

00:31:34,862 --> 00:31:36,422

the new decorations and stuff.

:

00:31:37,732 --> 00:31:38,362

Chris: I like it.

:

00:31:38,872 --> 00:31:39,982

This, this is…

:

00:31:40,102 --> 00:31:43,832

Tyler was joking, 'cause when we walked

in, we came in at separate times.

:

00:31:43,842 --> 00:31:46,412

He's like, "Yeah, I knew when I walked

in the door that you were gonna like

:

00:31:46,412 --> 00:31:48,582

this place just because of the colors."

:

00:31:48,582 --> 00:31:49,402

And I'm like, "You're right.

:

00:31:49,642 --> 00:31:52,502

This is definitely a

Chris-coded- … space."

:

00:31:52,662 --> 00:31:54,352

Girls: Well, yeah, that

green color wall came.

:

00:31:54,422 --> 00:31:54,692

We…

:

00:31:54,792 --> 00:31:58,002

It was, like, all white, and then we

were like, "We need some kinda color."

:

00:31:58,322 --> 00:32:00,852

And now everyone's like,

"That green is just…"

:

00:32:01,432 --> 00:32:01,462

Chris: Yes.

:

00:32:01,462 --> 00:32:01,732

Girls: Yeah.

:

00:32:01,732 --> 00:32:02,024

It really

:

00:32:02,024 --> 00:32:02,462

Chris: makes- It definitely

:

00:32:02,462 --> 00:32:04,022

Girls: makes, makes a space.

:

00:32:04,452 --> 00:32:06,632

Chris: Yeah, I wanted to put that

in our studio, and he's like, "No."

:

00:32:07,592 --> 00:32:08,072

"I'm not paying that much."

:

00:32:08,072 --> 00:32:08,102

The first one?

:

00:32:10,748 --> 00:32:11,728

It wasn't that green, was it?

:

00:32:12,318 --> 00:32:12,608

Tyler: I don't know.

:

00:32:12,608 --> 00:32:13,148

It was close.

:

00:32:13,708 --> 00:32:13,728

Girls: Yeah.

:

00:32:13,738 --> 00:32:16,458

That's called vintage vogue

if you guys ever wanna use

:

00:32:18,348 --> 00:32:18,448

Chris: that

:

00:32:18,828 --> 00:32:18,898

Girls: color.

:

00:32:18,898 --> 00:32:18,988

Vintage vogue.

:

00:32:19,088 --> 00:32:19,348

Hi, Eden.

:

00:32:20,208 --> 00:32:21,048

We can kiss later.

:

00:32:21,858 --> 00:32:23,218

Chris: He's excited to hop on here.

:

00:32:23,388 --> 00:32:23,528

Girls: Yeah.

:

00:32:23,558 --> 00:32:26,348

Tyler: We're getting close

to our 45 minutes already.

:

00:32:26,438 --> 00:32:27,208

Flew by.

:

00:32:27,288 --> 00:32:27,778

Girls: Oh, dang.

:

00:32:27,858 --> 00:32:31,618

Tyler: But one of my last questions is if,

for both of you, if you could tell your

:

00:32:31,618 --> 00:32:33,238

younger self one thing, what would it be?

:

00:32:38,640 --> 00:32:39,580

Girls: These questions.

:

00:32:39,660 --> 00:32:40,560

You got some good ones.

:

00:32:40,560 --> 00:32:41,560

I'm like, they make you think.

:

00:32:42,670 --> 00:32:42,890

Yes.

:

00:32:42,940 --> 00:32:45,160

I would tell my younger self like

:

00:32:47,900 --> 00:32:49,160

Failure isn't an option.

:

00:32:50,380 --> 00:32:51,280

Like, if you're…

:

00:32:52,390 --> 00:32:53,370

Like, I'm not gonna fail.

:

00:32:53,410 --> 00:32:57,410

Like, if I'm gonna open something and put

my all into it, I'm gonna make it work.

:

00:32:57,560 --> 00:32:58,850

It's exhausting.

:

00:32:58,880 --> 00:33:00,920

I mean, we're exhausted a lot, you know?

:

00:33:00,930 --> 00:33:00,940

Mm.

:

00:33:01,290 --> 00:33:07,020

People think owning your own business

is easy, and it is the polar opposite.

:

00:33:07,860 --> 00:33:09,660

I mean, we work all the time.

:

00:33:09,950 --> 00:33:10,440

But

:

00:33:13,060 --> 00:33:16,700

keep going and, like,

failure is not an option.

:

00:33:16,720 --> 00:33:19,180

Like, if you, if you wanna

do something, just do it.

:

00:33:19,180 --> 00:33:19,320

Mm-hmm.

:

00:33:19,320 --> 00:33:20,010

It's easy.

:

00:33:20,670 --> 00:33:20,730

Yeah.

:

00:33:20,730 --> 00:33:21,700

I mean, it…

:

00:33:21,790 --> 00:33:23,400

in hindsight, like, a lot…

:

00:33:23,400 --> 00:33:27,050

I think a lot of people are scared,

too, about, like, the legal part

:

00:33:27,050 --> 00:33:31,720

of things, like- Yeah … you know,

just, like, opening a, doing a EIN.

:

00:33:31,720 --> 00:33:32,690

That takes five minutes.

:

00:33:32,700 --> 00:33:33,120

Mm-hmm.

:

00:33:33,120 --> 00:33:33,980

Like, you know what I mean?

:

00:33:33,980 --> 00:33:36,580

Just do a little research and, and do it.

:

00:33:36,580 --> 00:33:36,747

Yeah.

:

00:33:36,747 --> 00:33:38,760

Tyler: A lot of people get stuck

in that paralysis analysis-

:

00:33:38,770 --> 00:33:39,660

Mm-hmm … phase there.

:

00:33:39,720 --> 00:33:40,110

Girls: Yeah.

:

00:33:40,220 --> 00:33:43,620

Yeah, and, like, the whole, the funding

of it, you know, how are we gonna do this?

:

00:33:43,620 --> 00:33:45,680

Like, you can start small.

:

00:33:45,960 --> 00:33:45,970

Mm.

:

00:33:45,980 --> 00:33:46,730

You can do that.

:

00:33:46,740 --> 00:33:49,230

You can start with, like, a little

bit, and you can grow from there.

:

00:33:49,240 --> 00:33:50,170

You don't have to, like…

:

00:33:50,450 --> 00:33:52,630

Some people think right away,

like, I gotta blow it out of

:

00:33:52,630 --> 00:33:54,090

the water and make it huge.

:

00:33:54,130 --> 00:33:54,490

No.

:

00:33:54,530 --> 00:34:01,040

Like- We had $4,000 left after we,

when we first opened- Yeah … to

:

00:34:01,040 --> 00:34:03,040

put inventory on our racks.

:

00:34:03,530 --> 00:34:04,270

$4,000.

:

00:34:04,270 --> 00:34:04,610

And I think we had, like- Oh, wow

:

00:34:04,720 --> 00:34:06,580

four hanging racks and some bralettes.

:

00:34:06,580 --> 00:34:06,970

Yeah.

:

00:34:07,200 --> 00:34:08,190

I mean, that was it.

:

00:34:08,489 --> 00:34:10,909

Like, bralettes- Yeah … and

four hanging racks.

:

00:34:10,929 --> 00:34:13,610

But we had people that showed up

for us and continued to support us,

:

00:34:13,610 --> 00:34:14,820

and we're like, "We're not gonna…"

:

00:34:15,290 --> 00:34:18,239

And an- another cool thing

that we have is Black Friday.

:

00:34:18,290 --> 00:34:21,810

We have, like, 50 women that wait outside

at 6:00 o'clock in the morning here.

:

00:34:21,810 --> 00:34:21,850

Or more.

:

00:34:21,850 --> 00:34:22,159

Wow.

:

00:34:22,340 --> 00:34:23,050

Or more, yeah.

:

00:34:23,389 --> 00:34:26,580

And they wait to shop with us, and

that is our busiest day of the year.

:

00:34:26,820 --> 00:34:26,980

Brittany: Oh, wow.

:

00:34:26,980 --> 00:34:27,550

It's amazing.

:

00:34:27,550 --> 00:34:29,449

Girls: And it's so cool, 'cause

people are like, "I didn't know

:

00:34:29,449 --> 00:34:32,510

there would be a Black Friday

shop in this small little town."

:

00:34:32,670 --> 00:34:32,830

Yeah.

:

00:34:32,850 --> 00:34:33,070

You know?

:

00:34:33,070 --> 00:34:33,260

Oh, yeah.

:

00:34:33,260 --> 00:34:34,310

And I'm like, "No, there is."

:

00:34:34,340 --> 00:34:37,469

And it's real- it's, you know,

that's grown really cool, too, so.

:

00:34:37,550 --> 00:34:37,780

Brittany: That's neat.

:

00:34:37,780 --> 00:34:39,449

Girls: Yeah, Black Friday's really fun.

:

00:34:40,290 --> 00:34:40,580

Yeah.

:

00:34:40,770 --> 00:34:41,250

It's- That's

:

00:34:41,250 --> 00:34:41,570

Chris: cool

:

00:34:41,719 --> 00:34:44,429

… Girls: and it's all day, so we

open at 6:00- Mm-hmm … and then

:

00:34:44,659 --> 00:34:45,960

we usually leave at, like, 8:00.

:

00:34:46,480 --> 00:34:46,840

Chris: Wow.

:

00:34:47,000 --> 00:34:49,540

Which is a, I mean, that's

a long day for a boutique.

:

00:34:50,320 --> 00:34:50,520

Girls: Yeah.

:

00:34:50,520 --> 00:34:50,760

Yeah.

:

00:34:50,810 --> 00:34:54,380

Chris: And that's crazy, 'cause most

people, I expect that, like, you'll

:

00:34:54,380 --> 00:34:59,890

see that kind of busyness and, like,

Black Friday mentality, like, "Oh, I

:

00:34:59,890 --> 00:35:04,230

need to get this, like, super niche

piece," in, like, a big old shopping

:

00:35:04,230 --> 00:35:06,040

center or, like, in the big town.

:

00:35:06,040 --> 00:35:08,790

But I love that, like- Mm … your

locals and the people around

:

00:35:08,790 --> 00:35:09,770

you are supporting that.

:

00:35:09,820 --> 00:35:10,300

Girls: Yeah.

:

00:35:10,490 --> 00:35:11,520

And that's what a lot of them said.

:

00:35:11,520 --> 00:35:15,230

They're like, "It's, it's so much

funner here to grab a coffee and,

:

00:35:15,230 --> 00:35:18,740

like, it's r- it's a relaxing Black

Friday experience at the beach."

:

00:35:18,750 --> 00:35:18,780

Yes.

:

00:35:18,830 --> 00:35:19,370

Which is fun.

:

00:35:19,670 --> 00:35:19,890

Right.

:

00:35:20,000 --> 00:35:20,190

So.

:

00:35:20,200 --> 00:35:23,920

We usually have, like, mimosas,

and we make it like a little party.

:

00:35:23,920 --> 00:35:24,450

Brittany: Yeah.

:

00:35:24,450 --> 00:35:24,760

Girls: Yeah.

:

00:35:24,790 --> 00:35:28,840

And we do discount all day, and then

we give them grab bags at, the first…

:

00:35:28,840 --> 00:35:32,130

Like, this year, I think

we actually had 60 bags.

:

00:35:32,270 --> 00:35:32,640

60, okay.

:

00:35:32,680 --> 00:35:32,870

Mm.

:

00:35:32,890 --> 00:35:36,400

So, and we make them really nice, and

we hand- Yeah … those out to the

:

00:35:36,400 --> 00:35:38,460

first 60 people that come in, and then-

:

00:35:39,380 --> 00:35:39,490

Chris: Nice.

:

00:35:39,680 --> 00:35:39,770

That's-

:

00:35:39,770 --> 00:35:40,200

Girls: Yeah

:

00:35:40,290 --> 00:35:40,850

… Chris: that is sweet.

:

00:35:41,300 --> 00:35:46,180

So- It's fun … my semi-unofficial

last question 'cause we've kind of

:

00:35:46,360 --> 00:35:49,940

hit on this a few times, what does

success actually look like for you two?

:

00:35:51,858 --> 00:35:52,168

Girls: Hmm.

:

00:35:53,278 --> 00:35:56,988

I think we're already, I think

we've already been successful.

:

00:35:57,098 --> 00:36:00,298

I mean- Yeah … just- I feel like from

the first day that we opened these doors

:

00:36:00,368 --> 00:36:02,668

that, like, it's just, I don't know.

:

00:36:02,688 --> 00:36:04,838

It's like, like success isn't in a number.

:

00:36:04,848 --> 00:36:05,268

It's not.

:

00:36:05,288 --> 00:36:10,888

It's in how we've been able to employ,

like, a, we have a large staff now,

:

00:36:10,888 --> 00:36:15,078

and for me, it's always like being

able to employ other, like, women

:

00:36:15,268 --> 00:36:18,198

that, you know, they can support

their family in ways that they need.

:

00:36:18,808 --> 00:36:24,258

Um- And that's one thing we did before,

is like we put it into our budget,

:

00:36:24,288 --> 00:36:30,752

our payroll- Mm-hmm Before, like, I

mean, that's always been in our budget.

:

00:36:30,922 --> 00:36:31,152

Right.

:

00:36:31,152 --> 00:36:33,712

We've always had employees,

and we pay them well.

:

00:36:34,022 --> 00:36:34,292

Chris: Yeah.

:

00:36:34,322 --> 00:36:38,302

Girls: So- Yeah … make it

worth their while and, you know.

:

00:36:38,992 --> 00:36:40,232

Chris: That's the first

time I've heard that.

:

00:36:41,992 --> 00:36:42,662

That's a good one.

:

00:36:42,952 --> 00:36:44,902

So one of my real last questions.

:

00:36:46,622 --> 00:36:50,232

As you can see, everyone, we're at

this beautiful place, at Chill Pretty.

:

00:36:50,302 --> 00:36:52,312

Where can people find

you guys on social media?

:

00:36:52,312 --> 00:36:54,762

And try and look up that

awesome viral Instagram.

:

00:36:55,252 --> 00:36:58,452

Girls: Okay, so @we're

@chillprettyboutique on Instagram.

:

00:36:59,152 --> 00:37:00,802

And then TikTok and Facebook.

:

00:37:00,802 --> 00:37:01,302

Mm-hmm.

:

00:37:01,682 --> 00:37:02,042

Okay.

:

00:37:02,112 --> 00:37:02,262

Yeah.

:

00:37:02,312 --> 00:37:02,442

Very

:

00:37:02,442 --> 00:37:02,732

Chris: good.

:

00:37:02,752 --> 00:37:04,122

So you got Chill Pretty everywhere.

:

00:37:04,132 --> 00:37:04,152

Yeah.

:

00:37:04,182 --> 00:37:05,432

Girls: Chill Pretty everywhere.

:

00:37:05,492 --> 00:37:06,192

Chris: Very nice.

:

00:37:06,222 --> 00:37:06,422

Girls: Nice.

:

00:37:06,482 --> 00:37:09,632

And then pretty soon our website's

gonna launch, our new website.

:

00:37:09,652 --> 00:37:13,552

We're we already have a website,

but- Mm-hmm … it's made by us.

:

00:37:15,142 --> 00:37:17,082

Chris: Hey, it's better than

the one I could make- Yeah.

:

00:37:17,082 --> 00:37:17,962

So I applaud you.

:

00:37:18,422 --> 00:37:19,022

Girls: Yeah.

:

00:37:19,222 --> 00:37:19,242

Yeah.

:

00:37:19,252 --> 00:37:21,642

So- So we're hoping that we'll be able

to be, like- Within a couple weeks

:

00:37:21,642 --> 00:37:22,552

a little bit more user-

:

00:37:22,592 --> 00:37:22,872

Chris: Okay.

:

00:37:22,952 --> 00:37:23,332

Girls: Yep.

:

00:37:23,862 --> 00:37:27,612

User friendly and-

Boomy … you can see the yoga.

:

00:37:27,622 --> 00:37:29,482

You can book yoga on there.

:

00:37:29,482 --> 00:37:31,802

You can book permanent makeup we do here.

:

00:37:31,812 --> 00:37:31,842

Okay.

:

00:37:31,852 --> 00:37:36,702

We also do waxing, and your hair

appointments, permanent jewelry.

:

00:37:36,752 --> 00:37:36,962

Yeah.

:

00:37:36,972 --> 00:37:40,162

So you can, you'll f- be able

to find all of that on there.

:

00:37:40,162 --> 00:37:40,442

Yeah.

:

00:37:40,442 --> 00:37:40,752

Tyler: Yeah.

:

00:37:40,922 --> 00:37:44,562

So for the listeners, it'll probably be

ready by the time this actually comes out.

:

00:37:44,972 --> 00:37:46,522

This will probably come out

in, like, seven weeks or so.

:

00:37:46,922 --> 00:37:47,352

Girls: Oh, cool.

:

00:37:47,392 --> 00:37:47,622

Tyler: Yeah.

:

00:37:47,632 --> 00:37:48,252

Chris: Seven?

:

00:37:48,742 --> 00:37:49,282

Tyler: Depends on how-

:

00:37:49,862 --> 00:37:50,672

Chris: What about six?

:

00:37:51,002 --> 00:37:52,252

Tyler: Okay, we do six.

:

00:37:52,692 --> 00:37:52,742

Girls: Okay.

:

00:37:52,742 --> 00:37:55,232

So the website will

probably be up by then.

:

00:37:55,232 --> 00:37:55,565

Well, let's- Today's Tuesday.

:

00:37:55,565 --> 00:37:56,982

Says the one who doesn't edit the podcast.

:

00:37:59,112 --> 00:37:59,362

Chris: This week's almost over.

:

00:37:59,362 --> 00:37:59,372

Yes.

:

00:37:59,372 --> 00:38:01,102

I look, it's like Tuesday, the week's

almost over, and I'm like, "Wait, what?"

:

00:38:01,372 --> 00:38:01,392

Girls: Yeah.

:

00:38:02,402 --> 00:38:03,422

Chris: For me, that is true.

:

00:38:03,472 --> 00:38:08,572

My schedule works Saturday through Friday,

so, like, Tuesday is my halfway point.

:

00:38:08,582 --> 00:38:09,012

Girls: Halfway.

:

00:38:09,022 --> 00:38:09,212

Yeah.

:

00:38:09,232 --> 00:38:09,632

Yeah.

:

00:38:09,632 --> 00:38:10,562

Chris: But yeah.

:

00:38:11,412 --> 00:38:13,342

I do wanna say thank you,

ladies, for coming on.

:

00:38:13,452 --> 00:38:15,302

Girls: Oh, thank you guys- Yeah, thank

you for having us … for coming.

:

00:38:15,372 --> 00:38:15,782

Chris: Oh, yeah.

:

00:38:15,842 --> 00:38:16,332

Yeah, appreciate it.

:

00:38:16,332 --> 00:38:16,422

It's been

:

00:38:16,422 --> 00:38:16,972

Girls: fun.

:

00:38:17,122 --> 00:38:20,802

Chris: I love showing up to new

places, and then having Brittany

:

00:38:20,802 --> 00:38:22,752

point us at, in more directions.

:

00:38:22,942 --> 00:38:25,172

I'm like, "Ooh, I would've never

picked this place, 'cause I'm a dude."

:

00:38:26,992 --> 00:38:27,572

So- We

:

00:38:27,572 --> 00:38:29,132

Girls: have a man section right here.

:

00:38:29,332 --> 00:38:29,512

Yeah.

:

00:38:29,512 --> 00:38:30,012

This is where all the men hang out.

:

00:38:30,012 --> 00:38:30,282

Right.

:

00:38:31,162 --> 00:38:33,052

On the couch and at the cash register.

:

00:38:33,052 --> 00:38:33,232

Yeah.

:

00:38:33,352 --> 00:38:33,602

Chris: Right.

:

00:38:35,832 --> 00:38:36,192

Tyler: Yes.

:

00:38:36,192 --> 00:38:36,372

Girls: Yeah.

:

00:38:36,372 --> 00:38:36,707

Chris: See- See-

:

00:38:36,707 --> 00:38:37,232

Tyler: Not a bad idea

:

00:38:37,272 --> 00:38:39,582

… Chris: I'm just saying- Yeah … if

you wanna open up, you know,

:

00:38:39,592 --> 00:38:41,442

like, a Vibe and Be Handsome.

:

00:38:43,232 --> 00:38:43,522

Oh, yeah.

:

00:38:43,522 --> 00:38:43,792

Get a spot for dudes.

:

00:38:43,792 --> 00:38:44,302

Yeah.

:

00:38:44,362 --> 00:38:46,942

Girls: Maybe that'll be

what we do over here.

:

00:38:46,942 --> 00:38:47,302

Over there, yeah.

:

00:38:47,302 --> 00:38:47,802

Yeah.

:

00:38:48,032 --> 00:38:50,172

Tyler: Your job just tell Chris to fund it

for you- Yeah … and you're good to go.

:

00:38:50,182 --> 00:38:50,302

Yeah,

:

00:38:52,432 --> 00:38:54,072

Chris: People are like,

"Chris, you got the money."

:

00:38:54,072 --> 00:38:55,392

And I'm like, "No, I don't."

:

00:38:55,392 --> 00:38:57,002

"N- no, I don't."

:

00:38:57,572 --> 00:38:59,022

Girls: We're good business partners.

:

00:38:59,022 --> 00:38:59,282

Yeah.

:

00:39:00,212 --> 00:39:00,492

Tyler: See?

:

00:39:00,852 --> 00:39:02,202

Chris: I'm, I might do that-

:

00:39:02,352 --> 00:39:03,262

if I had a business partner.

:

00:39:03,662 --> 00:39:04,082

Tyler: There you go.

:

00:39:06,222 --> 00:39:07,872

Girls: And then you can bring

in all that color that you wear.

:

00:39:09,402 --> 00:39:10,112

Chris: I do wear…

:

00:39:10,152 --> 00:39:12,382

Well, typically, outside

of work, I wear green.

:

00:39:12,732 --> 00:39:13,382

Girls: Oh, okay.

:

00:39:14,050 --> 00:39:14,270

Cool.

:

00:39:14,320 --> 00:39:14,610

Chris: Yeah.

:

00:39:15,180 --> 00:39:16,240

So that would be my whole space.

:

00:39:16,270 --> 00:39:16,560

You could

:

00:39:16,560 --> 00:39:17,690

Tyler: just blend into the wall.

:

00:39:17,700 --> 00:39:17,960

Chris: Yeah.

:

00:39:18,220 --> 00:39:18,458

Yeah, yeah.

:

00:39:18,458 --> 00:39:19,010

Just, just walk back.

:

00:39:19,010 --> 00:39:19,220

That

:

00:39:19,400 --> 00:39:20,080

Girls: vintage vogue.

:

00:39:21,720 --> 00:39:22,740

Chris: All day, every day.

:

00:39:23,280 --> 00:39:24,060

Thank you, guys.

:

00:39:24,110 --> 00:39:24,310

Girls: Thank you.

:

00:39:24,310 --> 00:39:24,870

Yeah, thank you.

:

00:39:24,870 --> 00:39:28,510

Chris: Thank you guys on

the other side listening.

:

00:39:28,780 --> 00:39:32,150

As per usual, we'd love it if you'd

like, comment, share, subscribe, and

:

00:39:32,180 --> 00:39:36,530

follow all these amazing women and people

that we have on this Surf City trip.

:

00:39:36,840 --> 00:39:37,770

We'll catch you in the next one.

:

00:39:38,030 --> 00:39:38,420

Cheers.

:

00:39:38,450 --> 00:39:38,750

Cheers.
