Speaker:“Hades & Philos: Prelude”
Speaker:by Domus Vocis
Speaker:September arrived, at long last.
Speaker:At the entrance, I spent what felt like countless hours
Speaker:waiting for my beloved.
Speaker:Two beautifully armored harpies flanked me
Speaker:as I stood at the shores of the River Styx,
Speaker:cold eyes sharply trained towards the dim light at the end of the black,
Speaker:damp tunnel. The only other furs in my presence were the souls stepping off Charon’s boat nearby.
Speaker:None of them dared to acknowledge my presence though.
Speaker:Instead, they fearfully kept their various ears, muzzles and tails downward
Speaker:while sullenly being led by centaur guards
Speaker:to the diamond gates.
Speaker:“Welcome to the realm of Hades, mortals!”
Speaker:three booming voices barked nearby.
Speaker:“Do not despair or cry pitiful tears,
Speaker:for you are now the loyal subjects
Speaker:of our King and Queen!”
Speaker:Standing at two meters in height and composed of metallic black fur along his naked body,
Speaker:Cerberus wore only a simple necklace
Speaker:given to him by my Queen.
Speaker:Each of the hellhound’s three heads
Speaker:focused on a mortal entering
Speaker:(all of whom couldn’t help but marvel at his sheath and well-trained muscles),
Speaker:but any who stalled or tried turning away
Speaker:would witness Cerberus’ ruby eyes dig into the pits of their soul,
Speaker:as well as the angry hellfire spitting from his three maws.
Speaker:That alone was always enough to scare them back.
Speaker:Finally, my nose twitched
Speaker:at the smell of his pine and spring scent.
Speaker:A smaller boat came into view down the tunnel,
Speaker:with two passengers sitting
Speaker:as a skeletal ferryman guided them across the river of the dead.
Speaker:The eager happiness from before soured slightly
Speaker:when the eldest traveler locked eyes with me.
Speaker:She was a beautiful red-furred doe wearing the brightest of green dresses,
Speaker:her hair ordained in flowered that seemed to shine in the dimness of the underworld.
Speaker:Normally, the mortals would be familiar with her loving smile
Speaker:and kind grace as she blessed their harvests,
Speaker:but none of them saw her current expression.
Speaker:Bitterness. Complete bitterness
Speaker:directed at me. Sitting beside her was my beloved however,
Speaker:and that reinvigorated my joy.
Speaker:When our eyes trailed to each other,
Speaker:the spark of love that’d begun to fade since March
Speaker:began to grow. It did not matter if he wore a snow-white dress
Speaker:or carried only a pair of small and trimmed antlers
Speaker:thanks to his mother,
Speaker:it was still him.
Speaker:My beloved mate. My prince.
Speaker:My queen. My husband,
Speaker:Philos. “We have arrived in Hades,”
Speaker:the substitute ferryman,
Speaker:a recognizable brown-furred hare in a tunic with wings on his footpaws,
Speaker:slowed their boat beside the private dock.
Speaker:“Welcome back home, My Prince.”
Speaker:“Queen,” he commented.
Speaker:“I keep reminding you that it is ‘Queen’, Hermes…”
Speaker:“Apologies, Your Highness…”
Speaker:he half-laughed. “You are forgiven.”
Speaker:The red deer stood up
Speaker:and promptly hugged the elder deer beside him.
Speaker:“See you in six months, Mother…”
Speaker:Demeter held him tightly in her arms.
Speaker:“I will miss you, my precious daughter.”
Speaker:It took everything in me not to groan at the sight of my mother-in-law acting so…well,
Speaker:motherly. Stoically,
Speaker:I walked over to the dock and helped my husband off the boat,
Speaker:fully aware of Demeter’s deadly glare.
Speaker:Without another word
Speaker:—though a curt nod between us
Speaker:—Hermes pulled away from the dock and began to drift down the dark tunnel once more.
Speaker:All while Philos
Speaker:held my paw tightly.
Speaker:As soon as the boat disappeared downriver,
Speaker:I leaned down to nuzzle his cheek.
Speaker:“I have missed you, my beloved,”
Speaker:I whispered into his ears,
Speaker:holding the lithe deer lovingly
Speaker:and close to my bare chest.
Speaker:“I am sorry you must depart from Demeter…”
Speaker:“I am saddened, King Hades,”
Speaker:he whimpered, then slowly looked up to me and softly smiled,
Speaker:as did I, “but words still cannot describe how much I have missed you,
Speaker:my dear husband.” We leaned forward
Speaker:and melted into the other’s lips.
Speaker:Parting away, I simply held the young man in my arms for what felt like an eternity,
Speaker:even though the morning remained youthful.
Speaker:The souls from before suddenly lifted their heads up to admire
Speaker:at their Queen walking beside their King,
Speaker:our paws clasping together.
Speaker:Those bold enough to step forward would introduce themselves and welcome Philos back,
Speaker:but not for very long.
Speaker:They knew the months had made me impatient.
Speaker:Or rather, made us impatient,
Speaker:having spent another six months apart once more.
Speaker:“Welcome home, Queen Philos,” Cerberus bowed proudly,
Speaker:his arrow-shaped tail swishing behind him.
Speaker:His three heads spoke in unison,
Speaker:“It has been a long year without you.”
Speaker:They formally shook paws.
Speaker:“It is good to be back, Spots.”
Speaker:The shorter deer laughed,
Speaker:and I couldn’t help but chuckle too.
Speaker:Cerberus even blushed lightly across his three cheeks,
Speaker:then returned to observation as we passed him.
Speaker:Past the diamond gates
Speaker:leading into the Underworld,
Speaker:a mortal would not miss the towering palace that loomed over the vast caverns and chambers.
Speaker:It seemed the same color as coal from a distance,
Speaker:but if one walked past the gardens and courtyard leading inside,
Speaker:they would know the palace to be made of
Speaker:silvery and shining obsidian ore.
Speaker:However, those unwelcome in my palace
Speaker:would only walk for eternity without ever reaching it
Speaker:unless I gave them express permission
Speaker:to enter. After lifting and carrying Philos into our spacious marble bedchamber
Speaker:at the base of the tallest tower,
Speaker:the handsome red deer and I would make love.
Speaker:We ravished into each other’s lips,
Speaker:inhaling our musks while pulling at our clothing until they lay adorned on the polished floor.
Speaker:I obtained the annual honor of delicately peeling away the dress my husband wore,
Speaker:revealing a young buck underneath
Speaker:as opposed to the doe maiden
Speaker:Demeter always yearned to raise.
Speaker:However, it did not matter what the Goddess of Fertility and the Harvest desired.
Speaker:All I desired in that gorgeous moment
Speaker:was my Queen. My husband,
Speaker:whose supple body squirmed as I kissed along his warm chest,
Speaker:stroking his neglected manhood.
Speaker:Mine—though not as impressive as Priapus’—still ached to feel Philos touch it.
Speaker:There existed no haste though,
Speaker:since we now possessed half a year together.
Speaker:We explored for hours,
Speaker:caressing our heated bodies and erect sexualities while inhaling the musks surrounding us.
Speaker:His composed of fresh rain
Speaker:and lavender mixing with my earthly scent.
Speaker:My fingers could barely stop feeling Philos’ sprightly nipples and toned limbs,
Speaker:let alone the area beneath his teardrop tail,
Speaker:which already raised itself for me
Speaker:when I dipped my free paw into a nearby vase
Speaker:of warm massage oil.
Speaker:Later, Philos rested his back against our silk bed,
Speaker:gripping the sheets as I deflowered him once more.
Speaker:I nibbled his neck without restraint,
Speaker:the deer’s cries and boyish moans
Speaker:chorused with my grunts each time I thrust my muscled hips into him.
Speaker:Driving me mad in our mutual pleasure
Speaker:as my manhood spread his enveloping entrance.
Speaker:Pulling us into an orchestra that could only be translated through gentle caresses,
Speaker:shuddering delight,
Speaker:arching backs, shivering sensations,
Speaker:loving licks and kisses,
Speaker:cries of ecstasy,
Speaker:a tearful ‘I love you’ and several hitched mutterings of ‘please never stop’.
Speaker:That day, we were reunited as one passion.
Speaker:One eros. In our immortal afterglow, Philos and I lay entwined together
Speaker:in our radiant warmth.
Speaker:His arms clung to my torso in a vice
Speaker:while I nibbled on his neck,
Speaker:eyes locked together.
Speaker:No words needed to be conveyed,
Speaker:but I told him anyway.
Speaker:“I love you, Philos.”
Speaker:His smile alone could brighten the darkness of my realm.
Speaker:“And I love you, Hades. My King…”
Speaker:Curling my tail around our legs like a fleece blanket,
Speaker:I kissed him once more
Speaker:and let us sleep amidst the wonderful sounds of our heartbeats. ***
Speaker:Every six months, I allowed my subjects and newly arrived souls the opportunity to attend the banquet welcoming their Queen back to Hades.
Speaker:Each year would be more extravagant than the last,
Speaker:and all the recently deceased mortals who entered my domain
Speaker:would have one final chance
Speaker:to celebrate living.
Speaker:Those who caused disruptions or insult
Speaker:would be immediately cast into the dark abyss of Tartarus without a second thought.
Speaker:As the fallen mortals danced to undead music
Speaker:and eagerly consumed the undead foods provided,
Speaker:Philos and I sat dignified,
Speaker:observing the banquet from our ivory and ebony thrones.
Speaker:I could not help but marvel once again at the divine craftsmanship
Speaker:my tailors provided us,
Speaker:especially for the red deer by my side.
Speaker:Normally, I wore my osmium chest piece beneath a himation
Speaker:and cloak painted in the darkest colors.
Speaker:Yet for tonight, I commissioned the tailors to create a velvet robe
Speaker:composed of purple and green colors
Speaker:that matched a twilit forest.
Speaker:Philos had been crafted a chlamys sewn with every perceivable color,
Speaker:and a midnight blue lining that shimmered each time he moved.
Speaker:With the clothes came a bronze brooch
Speaker:in the shape of a blood red pomegranate.
Speaker:The lad also proudly sported a flower wreath of roses and lilies as a crown
Speaker:(mine was made of pure silver atop my headfur)
Speaker:beneath his antlers.
Speaker:Any soul brave enough to approach
Speaker:greeted us with either false smiles
Speaker:or pleading gazes.
Speaker:“And who might you be, mortal?”
Speaker:I asked the elderly lion kneeling before me,
Speaker:gripping my iron scepter.
Speaker:“Speak up.” “M-My name is H
Speaker:-Hypeirochus, Eubuleus One,”
Speaker:he nervously raised his greyed muzzle.
Speaker:“Greetings to you, Hypeirochus,”
Speaker:Philos smiled softly.
Speaker:““Oh, Great King and Queen of the Underworld,
Speaker:I was never able to tell my wife I loved her a final time before death.
Speaker:I h-humbly request
Speaker:I be allowed to visit her only once.
Speaker:Afterward, I shall accept my fate,
Speaker:w-wherever you decide to place me…”
Speaker:Philos and I exchanged a silent conversation,
Speaker:and after little deliberation, the deer had convinced me.
Speaker:“Very well.” I replied, announced with some reluctance,
Speaker:“You will be allowed to visit her for just tonight, but then you will be returned to the Asphodel Meadows by dawn tomorrow.”
Speaker:No longer nervous or melancholy,
Speaker:the feline happily followed one of my psychopomps to the tunnel of the River Styx.
Speaker:Although cold and stern,
Speaker:as the mortals have often viewed me,
Speaker:I knew of all gods
Speaker:how powerful true love could be.
Speaker:The next soul to kneel was a disheveled,
Speaker:twitching young wolf
Speaker:with a desperate glare in his eye. “H
Speaker:-Hades, you must let me go back!” he whined. “I need to go back!
Speaker:I can’t be here! I was robbed while trying to court a beautiful woman!”
Speaker:“You are dead, mortal.”
Speaker:Frowning at this mere wolf,
Speaker:I replied, “Enjoy the festivities—” “Please, Hades!”
Speaker:he now stood begging.
Speaker:“I cannot be dead!
Speaker:I have so much to do!
Speaker:Y-You let that cat go, so why not me?!”
Speaker:“He had respect, unlike you.”
Speaker:Philos spoke for me,
Speaker:his eyes as cold as mine
Speaker:as we stared down at this mortal.
Speaker:“He understood that no soul can escape death,
Speaker:and accepted his fate,
Speaker:unlike you. If you wish to—”
Speaker:“You must send me back to the land of the living!”
Speaker:He stomped forward until he was only at arm’s length from my Philos.
Speaker:My Queen. “You must understand!
Speaker:I cannot be dead!”
Speaker:“I do understand,” he did not falter.
Speaker:“You are the one who is in denial.” “P
Speaker:-Please, I beg of you!
Speaker:You will let me flee from this horrid place!”
Speaker:“Cerberus!” I commanded him nearby.
Speaker:“Bring him to Minos to be judged at once!”
Speaker:Hulking forward, the three-headed hound proceeded to drag the howling mess away
Speaker:out of the palace courtyard,
Speaker:resuming the awkward silence to the rhythm of chatter
Speaker:and undead music.
Speaker:Several souls line up to praise us before Cerberus returned and knelt
Speaker:before us.
Speaker:“My King, my Queen,
Speaker:I apologize for his insolence,”
Speaker:he folded his six ears downward.
Speaker:“I promise you that Minos will not be kind
Speaker:towards his cowardice
Speaker:of death.” “There is nothing to apologize for, Spots,”
Speaker:Philos smiled down at the muscular hound.
Speaker:“I am simply glad you removed that foolish mortal from our sights.”
Speaker:“Some of them think they are beyond the rule of the gods,”
Speaker:I grumbled in my throne.
Speaker:“They believe they are simply entitled to live longer because they wasted a lifetime.”
Speaker:“It cannot be helped, Hades,”
Speaker:my husband stated solemnly.
Speaker:“It is cruel, but every mortal fur all must die eventually.
Speaker:It is the balance of life and death.”
Speaker:The banquet would continue onward as planned.
Speaker:Between the dancing and food,
Speaker:mortals would line up to greet us,
Speaker:praise us or simply ask favors from us.
Speaker:Sometimes, we’d be obliged to hear their queries,
Speaker:but never if it meant for asking to be returned to above.
Speaker:Like Philos said,
Speaker:it was the balance of life and death.
Speaker:No matter how hard they struggled
Speaker:or tried to defy their final fates,
Speaker:mortals lived and then died
Speaker:before becoming subjects
