You did something right today. Something careful. Something honest. Something that

took real effort and not a single person saw it. No one. No one thanked you. No one noticed.

No one's going to bring it up at dinner. So here's the question I want you to be sitting with for

the next few minutes. Did that count for anything? Because if you're carrying real responsibility

right now at work, at home, on a team, or in a ministry, I'd guess a lot of your faithfulness

feels unnoticed, unrecognized, and maybe honestly unimportant. You're doing the work, but

There's nobody clapping.

Hey, I'm Vincent Ream, and this is Equipped for Purpose, the show that helps you integrate

This is episode number 114, and it's kicking off our Sunday to Monday faithfulness series.

And today we're talking about the leadership God forms in the places nobody's watching.

Okay, I want to now push back on that feeling of going unnoticed.

Not by telling you to just try harder or to stop caring what people think.

That's not what this is and that's not useful advice.

I want to show you something better.

And it's that private obedience isn't the waiting room before real leadership.

It's the workshop.

It's where God builds the kind of integrity that can actually hold weight later.

And if that's true, then the unseen thing you did today wasn't wasted.

It was formation.

And the question we're going to keep coming back to today,

Where do you feel unseen right now?

And what if that's not wasted ground, but sacred ground?

First, we're going to look at what the Apostle Paul says about working for an audience of one.

Then we're going to look at why Jesus says the little things aren't small things at all.

And then we're going to put it together and talk about what this means for you as a leader of yourself, the people around you, and of whatever system you're a part of.

Paul writes this in Colossians chapter 3 verses 22 through 24.

And I want to be up front with you about who he's talking to because it matters.

He's writing directly to enslaved believers in the first century church.

That's the audience.

And I'm not going to pretend that's a minor detail or skip past it,

because the text has been misused before by people who wanted it to say more than it says.

Paul isn't endorsing slavery.

He's not handing down a permanent command about any particular job or role.

What he's doing is something different.

He's speaking directly to people with the least social power in their world.

And he's giving them something no one else was offering them.

Dignity and a reframe of who they're actually working for.

Here's what he says.

Work not by way of eye service as people pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.

Whatever you do, work heartily as for the Lord and not for men.

Eye service, that seems like kind of an old word, but you know exactly what it means.

It's the version of you that shows up when you know you're being watched.

here this is about misplaced motive working for the wrong audience so here's the reframe and

it's actually better news than it sounds at first christ is the true supervisor of your labor

It's not your boss. It's not your small group. It's not whoever might notice. It's Christ,

which means the task nobody saw today wasn't unsupervised. It was witnessed by the only

audience that actually matters. So here's the practice or application. Before you start a task

this week, it doesn't matter if it's visible or invisible, take 10 seconds, just 10, and reframe it

silently as an offering to Christ instead of a performance for whoever might be watching or not

watching. Now take a moment and picture a small group leader who spends an hour prepping a lesson

for a group of four people. The small group's attendance has been low. Nobody's really going

to know how much work went into it. But this leader does it anyway with the same care they'd

bring to a room of 200 because that leader's not actually preparing for the four. They're preparing

for the one who sees the hour they spent. And that's the shift. Not try harder because someone

might notice, but work heartily because someone already does. Now let's go to Luke 16:10. And Jesus

says it plainly, whoever is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much. This shows up in

the middle of a conversation about money. Jesus is teaching a parable about a manager and how he

handles what's entrusted to him. So the immediate context is stewardship, resources, that kind of

thing. But Jesus isn't just talking about your bank account. He's naming a pattern that's

that's bigger than money, which is the fact that trustworthiness isn't built in a big moment.

It's revealed in the small one. Here's the theology underneath that. The leader you become in public

is simply the leader you already are in private, but made visible. God's not withholding influence

from you arbitrarily like he's playing some kind of a game. He's watching what you do with what's

already in your hands. The small, unglamorous, easy to skip things. And that's before he hands you more.

So this week, I want you to name one recurring small responsibility. The kind nobody checks.

The kind where skipping it would cost you nothing, nothing visible.

And I want you to treat it with the same excellence you'd bring to something public.

Think about a team lead who told a direct report weeks ago.

I'll get you that resource.

It's a small thing.

Nobody's tracking whether he follows through.

But that team lead does, not because it's urgent, but because that quiet follow through is exactly what's building the trust that will carry weight later when the stakes are higher.

Here's the question again, because I want it to stick.

Where do you feel unseen right now?

And what if the little thing you're tempted to let slide is actually the thing God's using to form you for what's next?

Okay, let's put these two together, because here's where it gets personal for a lot of you who are leading.

Private obedience is not a lesser form of leadership.

If I were to say there was an actual curriculum here, your private obedience would be it.

Think about the story of Joseph in the book of Genesis, sold into slavery,

running someone else's household with integrity for years before anyone in power noticed him.

Think about David, faithfully tending sheep, killing lions and bears nobody would ever hear about long, long before he faced Goliath.

And I'm not pulling deep exegesis out of these stories here.

I'm just pointing at the pattern.

Both Joseph and David had long, hidden seasons of faithfulness before they had public influence.

And in both cases, the hidden season wasn't wasted time.

It was where God built the exact character they'd need later.

Here's the danger in skipping private obedience.

Those leaders who go straight to visible influence without the private formation

tend to build a platform on character they haven't actually developed yet.

And that's fragile. It cracks under pressure because there was never a foundation underneath

the image. So if you're in a hidden season right now, maybe it's a role that feels small

or waiting that feels long, or perhaps it's a responsibility no one's applauding.

I want you to ask a different question than, when does this end? Ask, what is God building in me

right now that I'm going to need later. That's not a consolation prize. That's the actual

leadership pipeline. So before we wrap this up, I want to offer you some leadership notes.

When it comes to leading yourself, the real issue underneath all of this is where you're seeking

validation? Is it from visibility or from Christ? One practice you can start tomorrow is a short

prayer of dedication. Just one sentence. Lord, this is for you, seen or unseen.

And at the end of the day, run a quick check. Just ask yourself, where did I work for

an audience today instead of for God. Now in leading others, here's a dynamic I want you to

watch for. It's easy to quietly discount a teammate's contribution simply because it's

not visible to you. So this week I want you to notice one piece of unseen faithfulness

in someone you lead and thank them for it privately and not to make it visible to everyone else.

just to let them know you see it, even if no one else does.

And the final leadership note I want to offer you is about leading systems.

Whether that's a church, a workplace, or a ministry team,

ask an honest question about your culture.

Do you only celebrate the visible wins

while ignoring the quiet, sustained faithfulness that actually made those wins possible,

consider building in a regular rhythm, monthly, quarterly, whatever fits,

where you intentionally surface and honor unseen contributions in front of the team.

And that does two things at once.

It disciples people toward the right motive and it develops future leaders by giving language and value to the formation already happening in their hidden roles.

So here's the question one more time because I want you to actually sit with it, not just hear it.

Where in your life right now do you feel like your faithfulness is going unnoticed?

and how might that actually be sacred ground, not wasted effort.
