“People pleasing is abandoning yourself for a story that disempowers you.” - Jenny Leckey

In this inspiring episode of Diary of a Recovering People Pleaser , Jenny takes you on a journey where a seemingly stormy day at the beach turns into a powerful lesson about perspectives and everyday miracles. She shares her personal story of how driving a rented convertible at the beach and narrowly avoiding thunderstorms became a metaphor for life.

She challenges you to reframe your stories and view uncomfortable situations as opportunities for growth. Find the miracles in the storms of your life and you'll be on your way to healing - and finding more and more miracles coming your way.

You’ll discover how shifting your perspective can help you start healing from the habit of people pleasing and align with your authentic self. It all starts with the stories we tell ourselves. Change your story, change your life.

Jenny:

It's amazing how many blessings are around you if

2

:

you actually slow down to look.

3

:

I was driving to meet my friend for

breakfast as I'm on vacation, and I have

4

:

also rented a convertible, which has been

a lot of fun driving at the beach, and I

5

:

wanted to really take advantage of that.

6

:

But of course, being by the ocean

often in summer means Thunderstorms.

7

:

I kept looking at the radar, and I

wanted to make sure I could drive, and

8

:

I saw heavy clouds in the distance.

9

:

I wanted to make sure that

top wasn't going to be down.

10

:

Wouldn't you know, I took the risk.

11

:

I literally drove around the storm.

12

:

Literally did a big horseshoe

with the directions I was taking.

13

:

The clouds were encompassed within that.

14

:

I did not cross one storm.

15

:

On the way back as well.

16

:

On the way back, the storm was behind me.

17

:

I didn't have anything.

18

:

It was amazing.

19

:

Some would maybe ignore it.

20

:

Some people might tell the

story, Oh, it's crappy.

21

:

weather.

22

:

Of course, the day is ruined, right?

23

:

My story was, holy shit,

that was a miracle.

24

:

Despite it being thunderstorms, I

literally got to cruise top down

25

:

and enjoy myself, both directions.

26

:

Is it raining now?

27

:

Yes, I made it home with minutes to spare.

28

:

I made it into the restaurant

with minutes to spare.

29

:

All that is, is a change

in perspective and story.

30

:

That's the only difference between person

who had day ruined and seeing a miracle.

31

:

It's the same exact

situation and instance.

32

:

It's the same exact details.

33

:

It's just what you choose to look at.

34

:

So don't disempower

yourself through your story.

35

:

That is where your superpower is.

36

:

Reframing, changing your approach

to how you look at anything in life.

37

:

So what does this have to

do with people pleasing?

38

:

Well, to me, people pleasing is abandoning

yourself for a story that disempowers you.

39

:

It's the story of, I have to try to

control all Outcomes of my choices,

40

:

and I have to try to control how

they might impact other people.

41

:

So, I'm going to modify and change my

choices to avoid any uncomfortableness.

42

:

That's a story, through and through,

that's a story we tell ourselves.

43

:

The people pleaser version of my

convertible would be pleasing the rental

44

:

car company by, oh my gosh, I better not

put the top down because it might rain,

45

:

when simply I literally could just pull

over to the side road and pull it up.

46

:

It's not a big deal.

47

:

I chose the story of it being

a miracle and it was a miracle.

48

:

So same thing with your relationships,

starting to make decisions for

49

:

yourself that feel aligned with what

you need and is for the highest good

50

:

of yourself and for all and trusting

the miracle of it working out.

51

:

Sometimes having the conflict

occur, having awkward experiences,

52

:

having tension, is a miracle.

53

:

That is the miracle that's needed.

54

:

Because sometimes, People need a

kick in the pants, yourself included.

55

:

And guess what?

56

:

Sometimes it's going to be divine

timing where you're the pants kicker.

57

:

Sometimes that's what we need , I'm

going to make up a number, 97.

58

:

865 percent of the time, we do not grow

and change from a place of comfort.

59

:

We change when we face adversities,

uncomfortable moments, when people give

60

:

us kicks in the pants, when things seem

to be thrown into chaos and are going to

61

:

shit, that's usually when growth happens.

62

:

It reminds me of the

phrase, no mud, no lotus.

63

:

The lotus flower grows in

mud, , and then from that comes

64

:

this beautiful lotus flower.

65

:

So, no muck in your life, no

mucky murkiness, no flower,

66

:

no blooming, no growth.

67

:

No expansion.

68

:

So give yourself space to

process when that happens.

69

:

And start reframing the story of,

what is this trying to show me?

70

:

From being a victim or being full

of fear to, okay, that happened.

71

:

What's this trying to show me?

72

:

Where do I go from here?

73

:

A little more introspection, a

little less outer world expectation.

74

:

Start from the inside out.

75

:

Don't work your life from the outside in.

76

:

Outside in is people pleasing.

77

:

Inside out is alignment.

78

:

That's spiritual.

79

:

That's connection.

80

:

That is true, authentic living.

81

:

So don't avoid the thunderstorms, but

see them as miracles in the making.
