But he had a brilliant career as an athlete too.

He went to West Virginia Wesleyan where he was the not only the star, but ended up doing a little bit of coaching as a matter of fact, back in high school in Parkersburg, West Virginia, where he was born.
Darren Hayes:
At Parkersburg High, he was the head coach of the team as a sophomore when they couldn't get an adult to take over the team.
Darren Hayes:
So he learned a lot from those experiences.
Darren Hayes:
He ended up going on to be the head coach at Muskingum and Marietta College and Ohio, all while he was pursuing a Major League baseball career.

Yes, the Black Sox series a very interesting he was probably the top hitter in the series for the Reds and you know, they ended up winning that series.
Darren Hayes:
But all along he he wanted to be a football coach.
Darren Hayes:
Baseball made him money, but he loved coaching football.
Darren Hayes:
So he went from coaching at Marietta and begged and asked if the Washington and Jefferson presidents in Washington, Pa.
Darren Hayes:
Would be interesting having him as their coach and they said sure.
Darren Hayes:

During his college coaching, he also played professional football in the mythical Ohio League before the NFL existed and for the Canton Bulldogs, the Massillon Tigers and the Dayton Triangles.
Darren Hayes:
He also had a stint as a coach of the Ironton Tanks.
Darren Hayes:
After his college coaching, he coached at the University of Virginia and West Virginia University and was an assistant coach at Yale where he was an assistant with future president Gerald Ford.
Darren Hayes:
He left Yale and a Yale graduate owned the Philadelphia Eagles, hired him on as a coach and the rest is history as he won two National Football League championships.
