Are old homes better than new homes? That’s the burning question that kicks off this weekend’s show, and trust me, Eric G. and John Dudley are diving deep into the debate faster than you can say “renovation.” We’ll tackle whether that nostalgic saying, “they sure don’t build them like they used to,” holds any water, or if it's just a relic from our parents' era. Plus, we’ll get into some seriously juicy topics like roofing materials that actually make sense for your climate and the do's and don’ts of electrical DIY projects—because let’s be honest, nobody wants their house to turn into a live-action horror flick. And hey, don’t miss our big reveal about the shiny new Around the House YouTube channel, so you can feast your eyes on all the home improvement goodness in glorious 4K! Grab your favorite drink, plug in, and let’s get this home improvement party started! Picture this: a lively debate where Eric G. and John Dudley dive headfirst into the age-old question that has divided home enthusiasts for decades—are old homes truly better than new homes? As they tussle with this topic, they explore the nostalgic charm of yesteryear’s craftsmanship versus the shiny, modern conveniences of today’s builds. You’ve got to love the way they dissect the saying, 'They sure don’t build them like they used to.' With a sprinkle of wit and a dollop of humor, they challenge the myths and realities behind this phrase, digging into the nuances of construction materials and techniques that have evolved (or devolved, depending on who you ask). The conversation doesn’t shy away from the practicalities either; they touch on new building codes that require better insulation practices, making sure our homes are cozy without breaking the bank on energy bills. In the second half of the show, the focus shifts to roofing and the importance of selecting the right materials for your climate. Eric and John don’t hold back as they share their own experiences—both the triumphs and the flops—when tackling DIY electrical projects. They emphasize the mantra of “know your limits.” I mean, who hasn’t had a sleepless night wondering if that outlet they just swapped is going to lead to a fiery disaster? With a mix of cautionary tales and tech-savvy tips, they introduce listeners to nifty gadgets like the Ting Fire monitoring system, which keeps an eye on your home’s electrical health. If that doesn’t sound like a superhero for your house, I don’t know what does! So, whether you’re a DIY newbie or a seasoned pro, this episode is packed with insights that’ll keep you laughing, learning, and maybe a bit less stressed about your next home project!

Speaker A:We have a great around the house show coming up this weekend.
Speaker A:Help us out and subscribe on your favorite podcast player.
Speaker B:In the first hour of the show, Eric G. And John Dudley debate the subject.
Speaker B:Are old homes better than new homes?
Speaker B:Is there any truth to the saying they sure don't build them like they used to?
Speaker C:I, I see a lot of, I don't know, I'm on a lot of different social media pages as kind of a expert or moderator and Canada is kind of going one direction, we're kind of going in another direction.
Speaker C:But you're starting to see a new building code out there where you have to put in on the outside of the sheathing.
Speaker C:So if you frame this up, let's say you're building a 2x6 wall, you put in your half inch plywood out there or OSB or whatever you're doing, they now want an R value on the outside that is continuous around the outside of the building.
Speaker C:And I get that because two by fours, two by sixes are heat sinks in that they go right through it.
Speaker C:It's not an insulating value.
Speaker C:So you do get those spots where you see it.
Speaker C:But I'm starting to get concerned that if we don't do this part right and I drive around and see some major builders in my area that can't even get the Tyvek part right, let alone putting on.
Speaker B:In the second hour, Eric G. And John Dudley discuss roofing and using the right material for your climate and then dive deep into those electrical projects and the right way to tackle them.
Speaker D:Man, I think I did that right.
Speaker D:And I'll lay there in bed all night and man, what if the house burns down like, and, and lesson learned, like, I just, I don't mess with things I don't know about.
Speaker D:Yeah, don't know.
Speaker C:You don't mess with it.
Speaker D:And electrical DIY things, swapping an outlet.
Speaker D:Okay, fine, swap an outlet out, maybe even running a new one.
Speaker D:If you can run that wire from one to another and you know that the circuit breaker can take it.
Speaker D:You got a 20amp, you got outlets on.
Speaker D:Okay, but you're good.
Speaker D:But man, you go wiring car chargers or redoing your home.
Speaker D:No, you just can't, you can't.
Speaker C:Man, I tell you what, it gets crazy out there.
Speaker C:And now the good news is now there's technology to help you with that.
Speaker C:If you're worried about those shorts, if you're worried about that stuff.
Speaker C:And we've talked about on the show before, but there's a little box you can plug into an outlet in your home called Ting Fire you did talk about.
Speaker C:So it monitors your house for shorts or things like that or bad neutrals or whatever.
Speaker C:And it monitors your house all that
