Dr. Kevin, thank you so much for joining us today.
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Absolutely, thanks for having me.
Katie Ellis:So let's start with your story. What originally inspired you to become a chiropractor?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Yeah, absolutely.
So my best friend growing up down the street from me, his older brother was a chiropractor, a very successful chiropractor, helping a lot of patients in the city. And at that time we got to volunteer, got to help out quite a bit.
And I just remember one day I was walking into his clinic, he had this large canister and there's a big toxic emblem on it. And I was like, what's inside there? And he's like, these are medications that my patients were able to get off of naturally.
And I was like, whoa, that's, that's a wild concept to me. And I was like, how they do it?
And he said, well, they got adjusted, they changed their diet, they started working on their stress, they started moving their body more, they started doing all these things. And he said, we always ask the question, what does your body need? You know.
And he teaches, he taught to his patients that health is a natural, normal state. And we lose that natural state when we get too man made.
When we start spending too much time on our screens, not enough time interacting with one another, socializing, but also exercising quality nutrition and then just the influence of your spinal nervous system and how it regulates your entire body. So this was all a new concept to me and I just thought it was so fascinating.
And because of his ability to help so many people, it really inspired me to want to help as well.
Brett Johnson:That's amazing.
I love that, that energy, that general reminder every time you walk into a room, you saw that canister full of medicine, what a great way we need, all business owners need to find that canister of some kind, you know?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Yeah, exactly.
Brett Johnson: ,:Now what prompted that direction for your clinic?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:The desire, need for patients that over the, over the years that just come in and they thought pain management or injections or surgery were their only ways. So many patients just became very frustrated with that.
And I started finding that if you do, if you start utilizing different techniques and approaches, you're able to really help these patients a tremendous amount. So, and so I started getting extra training.
So I wanted to train and learn more about like, what's the leading, what's the best thing you can do for like sciatica? What is truly like, what does the research show, what really moves the needle, what gets people away from surgery.
And that's how I landed on decompression. So there's just so many clinical trials out there that show it.
It is just the gold standard, non invasive way of treating, you know, sciatica, which is a very common pain. That's that pain that runs down the back of the leg that we saw a lot in our office. And while spinal adjustments were great, it needed more.
And so I wanted to offer more to patients. So that was the spinal decompression. Same thing with the scoliosis.
I started taking a lot of X rays in my patients and noticing these large curvatures. And they were told ever since they were young, you know, we'll just wait and see. And that always didn't sit right with me.
The wait and see felt more like a neglect. And as a result of that, I wanted to know, what can we do with these scoliosis patients?
And sure enough, there's a technique out there called the Schroth method. Very popular in Europe. Go figure, right? And so they've been using this for hundreds of years.
Different hanging exercises, scoliosis specific Setups, breath work that can actually stop or even reverse some degrees of scoliosis. And I was just blown away with the before and after photos.
So I started taking classes online, going to these seminars, and started implementing these exercises and these techniques. And the results have just been amazing.
And once you really help some of these patients that have been offering for decades or even sometimes longer with a condition, and you really help them and get their life back. Oh, they, they're like pollinators.
They just tell everybody and next, you know, like, I'm the scoliosis guy, I'm the disc guy, you know, and that's just been really fun. Ever sense.
Katie Ellis:That's wonderful. And your practice embraces the philosophy of move better, feel better, live better.
Can you break down what that means for your patients and how it guides your treatment approach?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Absolutely. So in order for us to really move better, we have to restore mobility to the spinal segments. We have to focus on alignment and posture.
And if we can do those things, we're going to move better. And as a result of moving better, it also takes pressure off the body, so it reduces pain, inflammation, nerve irritation.
So you don't have become reliant on drugs or surgery. And as a result of that, you're going to feel better. And when you're moving better, you're feeling better, then you live better.
And as a result of that, our patients are able to return to the activities that they love.
So while you're, whether you're an avid golfer or like being in the garden, we really want to make sure that you feel strong and more confident in your body.
Brett Johnson:Now there doesn't exist in any business category, you're the only one doing it. So you know you have competition. What do you believe? Yeah.
What do you believe makes abundant you one of the top chiropractic clinics serving the Tri Village area.
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Yeah. So that's easy, really. Just our willingness to go above and beyond to learn more. And we have just the clinical experience.
So the clinic is ran by myself and my wife. Both of us have over a decade of experience and we have just our specialties. So for example, my wife, she's very specialized.
Pediatrics, prenatal, women's health. She just loves it. That's all her life. She also has a sports medicine background, was a D1 athlete.
So she's had all the injuries with their hips, knees, ankles, you can think of.
And it's another thing like when you live with it and you live with it and gone through it and you've helped patients beat it it's just the results are just the best, in our opinion, of course.
But the second thing is my specialty of more scoliosis and getting more involved with the decompression is just again, not every office is offering that. So a lot of offices do great work, of course, and they have their own philosophy.
But what I find is there's a lot more necessity for more equipment and external factors that a lot of chiropractors don't have.
So if you don't have, for example, a decompression table in your clinic, unfortunately, you're not going to be able to accomplish the same thing that someone does that same thing with, like the Schroff method or other techniques that we use in our practice. We have all this advanced equipment that's able to actually mold the spine. So our focus has always been more on long term versus quick cracks.
Educating our patients on things they can do at home when they're not in the office, really empowering the patient. Because taking care of your spine is a lifestyle no different than taking care of your teeth. Every day you have to brush your teeth.
There's something you can always do to improve posture and alignment. And I know that that's what patients truly want because they don't want to be out of pain just short term, they want a long term solution.
And I just feel like our team cultures and focuses on that. And we're very good at, obviously we're very passionate about what we do and I think the results speak for themselves.
Katie Ellis:So no doubt you're going to be inspiring people to come and see you for the first time. What should a new patient expect during that first chiropractic visit with you?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Yeah. So one thing we do is we always offer complimentary consultations, which is just a sit down appointment with the doctor.
One on one, you learn about our office, learn about our services, we do.
You explain what's been going on, what's been bothering you, and if we think we're the right fit, we will make some recommendations, whether that's to move forward with an examination and X rays or to refer you out to someone if we can't help you.
But if patients decide to ever move forward with care, we always start off with a detailed history, a full spinal neurological examination, posture movement assessments. We do have in house digital X rays. We also review MRIs, CT scans, if you have them, and just a clear explanation of what's going on.
I find it kind of interesting because I've asked previous patients in the past. I know you've Been to a chiropractor before. What were you being seen for? And a lot of times they don't even know.
They're like, well, they would just adjust me and I'd go on. I was like, well, what was your diagnosis? Well, I just. Back pain. Well that's, that's not very specific.
That's not, that's not enough for me, in my opinion. And we want a customized care plan that patients truly understand. And it's not just things they do in the office, but what can they also do?
Because we all know our behavior in our habits really affect our spinal health tremendously. There's genetic factors and other things too, and injuries and falls and traumas.
But we also need to know and understand how we should be moving better and how we should actually be standing and sitting and going through life.
Brett Johnson:Yeah, that makes sense. And I get the sense of over the last. I don't.
I'm going to come call it a decade for my realization of chiropractic work as it just, it seems to have evolved. It's, you know, so much.
Your practice is emphasizing corrective chiropractic care versus that, that traditional talk a little bit more about what, what do you mean by corrective chiropractic care?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Yeah. So let's say for example, you go to a chiropractor.
A lot of times you go in because you have neck pain or back pain, you get adjusted and they say, you know what, come back when you're hurting again. And for a lot of people that works.
However, what we've found and what the literature has showed, a lot of times these problems people are, are having is not just because of a joint being fixated for just a short amount of time, but there's like these big, large postural distortions or these, these abnormal curves.
And so if we can really focus more on not just where you're hurting now, but the whole structure and look at it biomechanically like what is more of an ideal alignment for your spine and teach you exercises. So there's neuromuscular re education, there's traction.
We use spinal remodeling, custom exercises equipment to really go on above beyond just a single adjustment. So it's not more just like, okay, fixing the symptom, but also making sure the symptom doesn't keep coming back.
So it puts a larger emphasis on restoring alignment long term and posture correction strategies versus just like, okay, you're hurting today, let's adjust you here and then come back if you hurt again the.
Brett Johnson:Way you're talking about this.
It almost I envision this architect putting together this very tall building and if something is out of line at the very base, it affects the very top. You know, they all.
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Exactly.
Brett Johnson:Inner work.
Dr. Kevin Sarich:And that's another thing too. Like we're not afraid to like. Okay. And, and the body does work from a base up. So I love that you use that example.
You know, it's no different than if you had a foundation issue in your house. What's good? What's that going to lead to? The windows cracking, the doors not working correctly.
And you can replace the windows and the doors all you want, but until you get to that foundation to fix the foundational issue, you're never going to have that long term protection and their symptoms will just keep coming back.
Brett Johnson:Yeah.
Katie Ellis:So you had touched on this a moment ago, but could you explain more about your spinal decompression using the DOC table, how that works and who would be an ideal candidate for that treatment?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Yeah, so anybody that has any type of nerve pain that goes down their arms, down their legs, that we call it radiculopathy, sciatica, degenerative disc disease, spinal, even stenosis, chronic back pain, neck pain, weaving, even had patients that have had failed back surgery syndrome. So they went, went in for a surgery and it was unsuccessful. Unfortunately that can happen quite a bit.
And as a result of that, what, what we find is the DOC table is able to very gradually pulsate the spine back and forth.
It creates this vacuum effect and it actually will help pull like the bulgy material back inward which also helps with nutrients and oxygen to damage tissue.
So it's reducing pressure inside the disc, it gently stretching out the spine, it's creating space and gapping which allows the nerves not to be pinched on.
So it's just, it's, it's so wonderful because over the years it's one of the most rewarding things when people come in and they've had this, you know, the doctor says, oh, it's just arthritis, it's just degeneration, you know. And everybody to some degree is gonna have some form of arthritis. Wear and tear, right? That's part of living. But that's not good enough.
This person isn't able to stand very long, this person isn't able to exercise anym, run do the things they love and they just think, oh that's just how it is getting older. You know, this person's 50 years old. It's just like that's, I just hate that because really there's just so Many different options out there.
And one thing I love about the dock table is there's a lot of different types of decompression tables out there. The doc is the one of the only ones I know that can actually flex, extend, and it can actually. You could target.
That's programmed where you can target specific region.
So if you have an L5 disc, we can target just the L5 disc, so we don't pull the entire spine, but it's just the L5 disc if you have a lateral bulge or medial bulge. So this is getting a little more technical, but people that have these conditions, they understand this. They have their MRI reports.
There are ways position the patient that not only relieves the pressure, but also is more favorable for healing of the disc.
Brett Johnson:You know, kind of going back, we may not have given the scoliosis its due. You approach it in a way using the Scroff method. Could you talk about that a little bit?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Yeah. Yeah. So, again, I just see so many patients from Upper Laurentian, Grandview Heights that are coming into the office.
We're taking and doing assessment, spinal X rays. We're finding scoliosis. We can use the Schroff method, which is a method of.
Basically, there's two concepts that the Schroff method uses to correct posture and correct scoliosis, or position the spine in a better, healthier alignment, and that is elongation. So elongation would be anything that pulls the spine apart.
So there's a lot of hanging exercises, a lot of lengthening exercises, and then there's expansion work. And expansion is done primarily through breath work.
So there are actually ways, believe it or not, to breathe into certain portions of your spine to actually open it up. So one emphasis we always talk about is with scoliosis, there's always a concave side and a convex side.
The concave side is the closing down or collapsing side. We want to expand our breath into that concave side to create space. And it's. It's so funny because it's nothing flashy or fancy, but it works.
It is something you have to do daily, so. But it improves their curves, reduces their pain, strengthens their spine. And it's just so effective, especially for teens.
If you could start earlier than later, you could not only stop progression. We get sometimes anywhere from 5 to 15. I've had 22 degrees of correction.
And then if you implement that with some bracing, whether that's a hard brace or soft brace. Yeah, it's just. It's. It's definitely the way to go.
Katie Ellis:So Technic and posture issues are absolutely on the rise. What does your posture correction program look like?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Yeah, so we have to understand why the posture is the way it is. So we have to identify the root cause.
So a lot of times we have to use digital X rays to see what the skeleton actually looks like, how the bones are stacking, and then we have to correct those dysfunctional patterns. So adjustments, traction, neuromuscular reeducation, and then reinforcing good postural habits.
So customizing ways the patient can move throughout the day, ideas to help strengthen, or other exercises just to get more motion back in their spine.
We teach it like daily habits, desk setup, sleeping posture, phone positioning, anything that we believe will make a massive difference long term for the patient.
Brett Johnson:You know, and we're putting your resume out on this, on this podcast for sure, because, I mean, you deal with issues like bulges, herniations, and spinal stenosis. How do you determine the right care for that for those issues?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Same thing. It always comes down to a detailed neurological assessment, health history, advanced imaging, the x rays, the MRIs, if we have them.
And then we start asking questions, well, which tissues are involved? What movement or positions make it better, make it worse?
And then we also do decompression or rehab or CBP treatment, like different chiropractic adjustments that are appropriate. And then we're always going to choose whatever's least invasive and most effective to get them out of pain and restore their function.
Brett Johnson:Yeah, I know. I'm sure everyone listening has had that frustration that you. You're in pain, you go into the.
The office and you just want something done where you have to. But that first initial one is to. To do all the testing, to know where you are right away. And that's frustrating, but it's one of those.
But you got to know where you are to. To end where you want to be.
Dr. Kevin Sarich:If you do not have the correct diagnosis.
Brett Johnson:Yeah, you're.
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Yeah. You can't treat it.
Brett Johnson:Right, right, Exactly. It's just got to be patient one, one, one meeting, you know, then we'll start doing some stuff. Exactly.
Dr. Kevin Sarich:You know, I'll tell a story.
It's kind of a scary story, but we had a woman, she was in her late 40s, and she was having lower back pain, and it was pretty low, close to her pelvis region. And so she kept going to her doctor. Her doctor's like, well, we don't. We're not entirely sure why you're having this pain.
And they basically somehow landed on thinking it might be pain. Referring from her, her ovaries or her uterus. And they end up doing a hysterectomy on this woman, thinking this would help her back pain.
And it didn't, you know, it didn't touch it at all. And that's a sad story because now, you know, again, she was done with bearing children.
But still, your, your glands and your organs, they do things, they control hormones. There's, they're still important.
You just, you don't want to just electively remove things unless we know for certain that's exactly where it's coming from.
Katie Ellis:Absolutely. You also specialize in auto accident and whiplash care.
Is there anything that sets your, you approach, your approach apart from these types of patients?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Yeah, again, so our office has three providers, myself, my wife, and another associate. And her background is actually in auto accidents. Whiplash. And so what that means is she's actually certified through the workers comp.
So she's a certified workers compared provider, which means anytime you have an injury, which is very common, when you fall down, you could have whiplash or if you get a car accident. And so what that means is we are very good at getting the proper diagnosis and the proper documentation to support the claims.
And we know how to treat it because again, car accidents, workers comp cases, these are situations where people have some major injuries again, and we have to be careful. So what that means is you can't, you can't go in there and just adjust it.
You know, there might be some low rehab exercises that need to be done first to get the swelling down. There might be some laser or some red light therapy we might use.
So we are just very good at listening, explaining, and guiding them through the process because it's very scary, especially after a car accident. There's ptsd, there's broken ribs, broken collarbones. You know, did the airbags go off? Concussions.
We work closely with a neurologist that specializes in concussions. So we just have the team and resources for those patients. Yeah.
Brett Johnson:With the pediatric and family chiropractic that you mentioned earlier, what does, what does safe age appropriate care look like for children?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Yeah, that's a great question. And that's a great question that my wife would love to answer, but she's not here right now.
So I will answer it for you because I've seen her working with these children for over 10 years now. So newborns and even toddlers could receive chiropractic care. But we're talking about light finger tip pressure.
Like, there's no twisty, there's no cracking there's none of that.
And what this does over time is because her body is still so pliable, multiple, it actually helps their overall alignment, so it can help with positioning and joint health, so development milestones. She also does a lot of work with cranials, so she'll actually help with head shape. So there's a lot of. It's called sacral cranial sacral therapy.
So it's more just like a gentle technique where you're just very massaging the skull, the head.
And then she also is certified in something called Webster, which is something that's more for pregnant women, where if the baby is at a breach position and you're worried about, you know, potentially the C section, she has these techniques that help more with pelvic alignment, which is op, which can help with optimal position of the. Of the. The uterus, which will help potentially have the baby flip. And she's had success stories with that, which has been really rewarding for her.
But a lot of times with the kids going back to kids, we do see a lot more kids because they're not coming in necessarily with pain, but they're coming in with other issues. Their. Their neck is stuck to the left or right torticollis. She sees that a lot.
Earaches is another one, and even colic, because we got to remember the nerves inside your back go to your internal organs, specifically the colon and your digestive tract. And this is involuntary stuff we're talking about. It's not something we consciously tell our colonic and tract or heart to beat.
It's all being regulated through the nervous system. So with children, it's just a light pressure massage points. These things restore alignment and help the nervous system and the child work better.
Brett Johnson:If. If we. If. If my wife and I known that 24, 25 years ago.
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Oh, exactly. First born.
Brett Johnson:Oh, my gosh. Yeah.
Dr. Kevin Sarich:And when the moms come in and the babies come in and they're like, they haven't been sleepy, the kids. I mean, don't get me wrong, she's really good at diagnosing, too. Like, hey, this might be a dairy allergy, or this might be this.
She does work with a lot of pediatricians, so she gets. And we get referrals from those pediatricians as well. But it's.
Brett Johnson:At least there was another option on the table versus.
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Exactly. And what's so cool about kids and infants is they respond so much faster than adults. So, you know, one or two visits. Yeah, this baby.
Oh, I got my baby back, you know, and that's Just, it's just.
Katie Ellis:I've seen it done on video, not in person, but it's almost, with infants, it's almost like their body just naturally knows what to do, to unwind, you know, to use a phrase. And it's just absolutely fascinating to, to get to watch and grateful that they only need a few.
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Oh, absolutely, yeah.
Katie Ellis:So you've integrated that functional rehab and exercise based care. How important is movement and strengthening in long term spine health?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:It's everything. It's absolutely everything. I mean, I'm sure you can relate to this. A lot of people, they stretch, they stretch every day. And stretch is good.
I'm not against stretchy. We do different types of stretches as well.
But that doesn't move the needle for people, mobility and strength does because it prevents injuries, it stabilizes your spine, it actually enhances balance and supports you more long term.
So for us, we, we just think it's, it's vitally important because I know the bones are need to be aligned correctly, but I also know what surrounds and protects those bones. Soft tissue, muscles, ligaments, tendons.
So if you're not addressing muscles, ligaments, tendons as well, I just feel like you're not getting the full picture. And the difference could be between more like short term, temporary relief to really last the results.
Brett Johnson:So let's end with some really quick questions like, you know, the top, the top takeaways, let's put it that way. So what's one daily habit everyone should do to protect their spine?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Yeah. Exercise snacks. Every hour, do an exercise snack. So go stand up, rotate your shoulders, back, chin tuck, Take deep, three deep breaths.
Move your body, take your body, all your joints through their full range of motions as often as you can. Because we live in a society that is too sedentary, we sit too much.
Brett Johnson:Yeah. Okay. What is the biggest myth you'd like to debunk about chiropractic care?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:I would say that once you start a chiropractor, you have to continuously go to chiropractors. A chiropractor, by definition a doctor. Since we're a doctor, of course, of chiropractic, doctor means teacher.
A chiropractor should be teaching you, empowering you how to take care of your spine and your nervous system for life. Now, do we get people still coming for maintenance care? Absolutely. But is it necessity? Is it, is it a necessity? Not necessarily.
Long as you're doing the right things, really working on your alignment, your posture, your movement, you're going to be in really good shape.
Brett Johnson:Good. And lastly, what's the most surprising thing. Patients learn about their spine during their first visit.
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Definitely. How far off their posture or their alignment. Is that really me? Holy. Yeah, yeah, that's. That's you.
Brett Johnson:Oh, gosh. Yeah.
Dr. Kevin Sarich:And so just.
And then also sometimes because we get some really hard cases, we do work with other chiropractors too, because our just our, our specialties like scolio. We get a lot of scoliosis referrals.
You know, when a patient walks into your office and you see a 70 degree curvature, they look like a question mark. And you know, and maybe the provider might like, you know, I don't know if I want to just touch this patient. I don't want to want to hurt them.
And as a result of that, they come in and they're just, you know, they've been shot down a lot and I'm just always excited to let them know there's hope. And there's usually always just something we could do to help them feel better.
Katie Ellis:And correct issues, you know, I'm grateful that you're taking new patients, it sounds like. So how can, how can we get a hold of you?
Dr. Kevin Sarich:Yeah, absolutely. So you can visit our website. It's Abundant You, that's Y O U Chiro. C H I R O dot com and at that website you can see all our different services.
We offer service areas that we provide and we'll take care of you. Again, we do offer complimentary consultations. We'll verify benefits if you have any insurance. If you don't have any insurance, that's okay too.
Again, we will figure out the best plan of action and see what we can do to help listeners.
