“‘As the Lord your God lives,’ she replied ‘I have no baked bread, but only a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a jug; I am just gathering a stick or two to go and prepare this for myself and my son to eat, and then we shall die.’” The trials of life for us sometimes so much they feel too much. Better if the Lord took us now: I can’t go on. Its a true feeling and its important for us to acknowledge how we feel.

But its not the end of the line for the Lord. However we feel - he is still with us, he still has a plan for us, and he is still preparing the next steps. This colossal hit we have taken - its a space for the Lord to act. We can’t do anything, we recognise we can’t do anything: suddenly it is easier for us to say, “Lord, you act.” And he does always. Not necessarily in exactly the way we imagined - but in a far broader and grander way. Let’s use these moments to abandon ourselves to the Lord - to rest in him, and let him do his wonderful work. For as we heard today: “The woman went and did as Elijah told her and they ate the food, she, himself and her son. The jar of meal was not spent nor the jug of oil emptied, just as the Lord had foretold through Elijah.”
