Shownotes

Christ is the head of the church, and Scripture calls the church His body—not a scattered set of solo believers doing their own thing. That picture sits at the center of the question, “Does it matter if I go to church?” Josh and John talk about how the early Christians gathered because life in Christ was never meant to be lived alone. The apostles warn against forsaking the assembly, not to box people in, but because drifting from the body slowly dries out the heart. Paul’s picture in Ephesians shows every joint supplying strength to the others, each believer a living stone set into something bigger than himself. When someone steps away from the body, they’re stepping away from the very means Christ uses to teach, steady, and mature His people.

Josh Freeman and John Daniel unpack this in a down-to-earth way. They talk through why Jesus built a church instead of offering a private spirituality path, how shared worship, communion, preaching, fellowship, and simple week-to-week life together shape a believer far more than most realize. The episode keeps circling back to a simple point: the church isn’t an optional add-on, it’s the place where Christ actually shepherds His people. They wrap up by inviting listeners to see the church not as a Sunday obligation but as a living organism joined to Christ Himself—messy at times, but essential and life-giving.

Transcripts

Speaker A:

Foreign.

Speaker B:

Welcome back to the IWTK podcast.

Speaker B:

My name is Josh Freeman.

Speaker B:

This is my co host, John Daniel.

Speaker B:

How are you this morning, John?

Speaker A:

Great, brother.

Speaker A:

How are you?

Speaker B:

I'm doing good.

Speaker B:

I think the weather man missed the dag on forecast last night.

Speaker A:

It went a little north of us, and I'm thankful, so.

Speaker A:

And I think I heard some friends in Waverly.

Speaker A:

It got pretty rough.

Speaker A:

And up north, north of us, toward Nashville I think got pretty.

Speaker A:

But.

Speaker A:

But it skipped us.

Speaker A:

So.

Speaker A:

Yeah, I know I was.

Speaker B:

I'm thankful for that.

Speaker B:

Well, today.

Speaker B:

My question today is church.

Speaker A:

Just.

Speaker B:

I know that's simple and.

Speaker B:

But like, do you have to go to church if you're calling yourself a Christian or, or whatever.

Speaker B:

And I do call myself Christian, but, like, do I have to go to church every Sunday?

Speaker B:

What does God say about the church?

Speaker B:

What does.

Speaker B:

I mean, what does he command us to do about going to church?

Speaker B:

Anyway, that's.

Speaker B:

That's what I want to know today.

Speaker B:

And let's see if we can get to the bottom of it now.

Speaker B:

And surely there's other people out there that thinks the same way.

Speaker B:

Just because I'm a good person or this, that, and the other, I'm good to go with God.

Speaker B:

So, you know, my thing is, what does he say about church?

Speaker A:

Well, that's a great question, Josh.

Speaker A:

And Lord willing, we'll dive into this together and we'll go to the scriptures and we'll find out what does God say about the church.

Speaker A:

And you know, I'm going to just from the onset, and this might be some groundbreaking news for.

Speaker A:

For you or for other people, but I believe the Bible to teach that you cannot be a Christian and not be a member of the Lord's church.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

And so I hope to prove you.

Speaker A:

Prove that to you according to his scripture.

Speaker A:

Not because I think so, because I say so.

Speaker A:

Let's see what the Bible says.

Speaker B:

Well, first of all, hey, wait, before we start, I don't know if we've done this before or not, but we've got.

Speaker B:

You see me and John standing up here.

Speaker B:

But there's two guys behind the scenes that I really want to thank.

Speaker B:

Etienne, he's our producer.

Speaker B:

I can't spell his dag on name, but I can say it.

Speaker B:

And I want you to know I really appreciate the work that you're doing for us.

Speaker B:

I know it's a lot of time that you're investing and then the studio y' all see here, it's a friend of John and Etienne's church, Aaron, he's.

Speaker A:

The one that has it.

Speaker B:

And thank you so much, Aaron, for letting us use the podcast, I mean the podcast studio and anti.

Speaker B:

And your hard work is appreciated.

Speaker B:

Thank you, sir.

Speaker A:

Absolutely, absolutely.

Speaker A:

And to the, to the audience, if you're with us, this is episode four.

Speaker B:

Four.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And if you will, if you've listened to 1, 2 and 3 and you're still with us, hey, we appreciate it.

Speaker B:

Absolutely.

Speaker A:

And I promise you we're going to better as, as these things roll along, we'll get a little bit more comfortable with, with doing this in front of the camera.

Speaker A:

It's kind of awkward.

Speaker B:

It really is awkward.

Speaker B:

I, I, I'm good at talking.

Speaker B:

I've always been good at talking my whole life.

Speaker B:

But you put a dagnam camera in front of me and I don't know what in the world's happening.

Speaker B:

It, it's totally different, I can promise you that.

Speaker B:

And then I guess you kind of feel vulnerable too, that the conversations that we're having, sometimes it's, I don't know, it might be embarrassing for somebody to know that you don't know this, but.

Speaker A:

How many people out there don't know.

Speaker B:

Or, and they're also afraid.

Speaker B:

Like, if you go to church, man, you know, you get lost in the sermon or whatever and, but you're too prideful to ask, you know, you nudge your buddy beside you, hey, what in the world?

Speaker B:

And then you get lost and then there, it's just hard to stay focused on it.

Speaker B:

And I hope this right here helps.

Speaker B:

It's just like the simple question of church.

Speaker B:

What does church mean to God?

Speaker B:

What should it mean to you and your family?

Speaker B:

And anyway, let's get down to it.

Speaker B:

Appreciate it.

Speaker B:

I'm sorry for the little rabbit hole chasing down right there, but Anthony and I really do appreciate your work.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And thank you, Aaron, for letting us use your studio.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Appreciate those guys very much.

Speaker A:

Yes, Josh.

Speaker A:

Well, first off, you know, let's, when he proposed this question to me, I thought I needed to sit down and put some thoughts together, so, so I did.

Speaker A:

And I've got a page and a half, two pages of notes here that I want to walk you through.

Speaker A:

And I'm not going to answer this question to you.

Speaker A:

I want to take you through some scriptures and I want you to, according to the scriptures that we read, I want you to answer right and answer this on, you know, your own question.

Speaker A:

But first off, you know, I did a quick Google search and says, I told Google, hey, define a church.

Speaker A:

What is church?

Speaker A:

Well, here's what Google says.

Speaker A:

Church is all Right.

Speaker A:

It says it's a building used for public Christian worship.

Speaker A:

It says it's a particular Christian organization with its own clergy, buildings and doctrine.

Speaker A:

It says that it's a hierarchy of clergy of a Christian organization, especially the Roman Catholic Church.

Speaker A:

And it says it's also the four definitions.

Speaker A:

The fourth and final one is institutionalized religion as a political or social force.

Speaker A:

So when you go to Google and say, what is the church?

Speaker A:

Those are what.

Speaker A:

That's what the Google comes out.

Speaker A:

So now I throw you.

Speaker A:

Do you believe that those.

Speaker A:

That that's the answer, that that's the definition of what the church is?

Speaker B:

No.

Speaker A:

A building or a, you know, particular Christian organization or an institutionalized religion for institutionalized.

Speaker B:

Sounds like it's.

Speaker B:

I don't know.

Speaker B:

Sounds like there's medication involved and give them the other.

Speaker A:

Could be.

Speaker B:

I don't know.

Speaker B:

That's not the way I would describe a church.

Speaker A:

No, it would.

Speaker A:

Well, first off.

Speaker A:

So I'm gonna say, you know, I guess in today's language and today's culture, that definition might go for some people.

Speaker A:

But I don't believe that is even a 42nd cousin to what the Bible describes the church.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

So let's go to the Bible and see what the Bible says.

Speaker A:

Turn with me, Josh, to Matthew the 16th chapter.

Speaker A:

Matthew, chapter 16.

Speaker A:

I believe you're already pretty close to there.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

So Matthew 16.

Speaker A:

And let's begin reading together in verse 13 through 19.

Speaker A:

So Matthew 16, verse 13.

Speaker A:

Read all the way down through 19.

Speaker B:

When Jesus came into the region.

Speaker B:

Oh, there.

Speaker A:

That's the Red Philippines.

Speaker A:

Just the location.

Speaker B:

Nope.

Speaker B:

Caesarea Philippi.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker B:

He asked his disciples, saying, who do man say that I the son of man.

Speaker A:

Him.

Speaker B:

So they said.

Speaker B:

Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

Speaker B:

He said to them, but who do you say that I am?

Speaker B:

Simon Peter.

Speaker A:

Wait a minute.

Speaker B:

Simon Peter answered and said, you're the Christ, the son of the living God.

Speaker B:

Jesus answered and said to him, blessed are you, Simon Bar, Jonah Barjona.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker B:

Blessed you use Simon Barjona, for the flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

Speaker B:

And I also say to you that you are Peter.

Speaker B:

And on this rock I will build my church.

Speaker B:

And the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

Speaker B:

And I will give you the keys of the kingdom to heaven.

Speaker B:

And.

Speaker B:

And whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven.

Speaker B:

And whatever you lose on earth will be lose in heaven.

Speaker A:

Loosed.

Speaker B:

Loosed, yes.

Speaker B:

What is loosed?

Speaker A:

Well, when you got something Tied up, you'll make loose.

Speaker A:

And so it's loose.

Speaker A:

It's the best.

Speaker A:

I mean, it's.

Speaker A:

Oh, this.

Speaker A:

Talking about time.

Speaker A:

Binding and loosen.

Speaker B:

Oh, okay.

Speaker B:

Let's see.

Speaker B:

You said 319.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker A:

There we go.

Speaker A:

All right, so that's the end, though.

Speaker A:

All right, so real quick, Josh, Bar Jorgeon is just son of Jonah, so Simon, son of Joan talking just to answer that question.

Speaker B:

So.

Speaker A:

All right, from what we read here.

Speaker A:

So let's look back at the.

Speaker B:

He said.

Speaker A:

All right, verse 18.

Speaker A:

So I got a couple of questions I want to ask you.

Speaker A:

From what you just read, whose church is it?

Speaker B:

It's Jesus's church.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker A:

Because what does this.

Speaker B:

I mean, it straight up says, I will build.

Speaker A:

What?

Speaker B:

I will build my church.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker B:

And the gate of Hades shall not.

Speaker A:

Whose church is it?

Speaker B:

Jesus is church.

Speaker A:

Jesus is church.

Speaker A:

Who built?

Speaker B:

Jesus did.

Speaker A:

Jesus did.

Speaker A:

That's according to who?

Speaker B:

Jesus.

Speaker A:

All right, Josh, so we've established that Jesus built it.

Speaker A:

He built his church.

Speaker A:

The church belongs to him.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

So now I want to ask you the question, according to this passage, what did he build it upon?

Speaker B:

Well, it says a rock.

Speaker A:

Says he built it upon the rock.

Speaker B:

So that's a big rock.

Speaker A:

So this idea of being built upon the rock he's referring to, what he's actually referring to here is.

Speaker A:

Is the confession that Peter made.

Speaker A:

You know, earlier on, while we went all the way back to verse 13, Jesus has asked his disciples, who do men say in mind?

Speaker B:

Right?

Speaker A:

And you know, they said, oh, some say Elijah, some say Jeremiah, some say some of the prophets.

Speaker A:

And then he says a more specific question.

Speaker A:

But who do you.

Speaker A:

But not what other people said, who do you say that I am?

Speaker A:

And Peter steps in and he says, what?

Speaker B:

He says, you are the Christ, the son of the living God.

Speaker A:

That's according to verse 16 of Matthew 16.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker A:

Peter says, you are the Christ, the son of the living God.

Speaker A:

And then Jesus's reply says, blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah, for the flesh and blood has not revealed this to you.

Speaker A:

You didn't get this from man.

Speaker A:

My Father in heaven has revealed this to you.

Speaker A:

And he says, and I tell you this, Peter, you are Peter.

Speaker A:

And Peter also means rock.

Speaker A:

But really you.

Speaker B:

Yeah, I didn't know that.

Speaker A:

Peter also means rock.

Speaker A:

And he says, and upon this rock.

Speaker A:

And he's referring to that confession that Peter just made when he said that you were Christ, the son of the living God.

Speaker A:

He said upon that, I'm going to build my church.

Speaker A:

He says, I'm the builder.

Speaker A:

It is My church.

Speaker A:

And I'm building it on the fact that I am the Son of God.

Speaker A:

All right, so now we've established who the church belonged to, who built it, and what it was built upon.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

So now I want to.

Speaker A:

In this very passage, this word church here in Matthew 16 and verse 18, that is the first time the word church appears in the New Testament.

Speaker B:

You know, that's where sometimes this right here is just.

Speaker B:

It's hard because in my mind, whenever he talks about upon this rock, I'm envisioning, you know, like they found a good, sturdy part of the ground.

Speaker A:

You know what I mean?

Speaker B:

And then you're telling me that it's.

Speaker A:

Well, you're in the.

Speaker A:

You're envisioning that they're going to build a structure.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

It's something like, hey, here's your barn.

Speaker B:

You know, that's what you do.

Speaker A:

So.

Speaker A:

So just hold on.

Speaker A:

Because it's not, again, the.

Speaker A:

The worldly definition, that's the number one definition from Google.

Speaker A:

It says it's a building.

Speaker A:

But I'm telling you today, we're going to go through scriptures.

Speaker A:

It ain't got nothing to do with brick and mortar.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

Brick and mortar is where the church assembles, you know, and.

Speaker A:

But anyway, so the building, actually.

Speaker B:

The church.

Speaker A:

Thank you.

Speaker A:

Yes, exactly.

Speaker A:

So this is the first place the church appears in all the New Testament.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

So when you go into the grave, you go back to the original language, you pull out this word.

Speaker A:

What is church?

Speaker A:

And the actual Greek word for church here is ecclesia.

Speaker A:

And now, I'm not a Greek, no scholar or whatever, but I think I'm pronouncing that right, but it's ecclesiastically, and eclissia means an assembly of people, and it means the call out.

Speaker A:

So ecclesia, the church, is the assembly of the call out.

Speaker B:

The called out.

Speaker B:

That means like the people that are called to the word of God.

Speaker B:

Is that what you tell me?

Speaker A:

The people who have, you know, and we can get this into in the future podcast or whatever, but people who have chosen to follow the master, who have chosen to obey Christ and his will, and they are a call out people.

Speaker A:

They're a peculiar people.

Speaker A:

I'm using Bible language because all this thing is talked about.

Speaker A:

He says, you know, and we are his children, we are his people, and we are called out from this world.

Speaker A:

We're in this world, but we're not of this world.

Speaker A:

We're of the kingdom come.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

And are the kingdom of God.

Speaker A:

So ecclesia is the assembly of the people.

Speaker A:

And the assembly of the call out.

Speaker A:

So it's not a brick and mortar.

Speaker A:

It's an assembly of people.

Speaker A:

All right, so now let's look at Ephesians, chapter one, verse 22 and 23.

Speaker A:

Ephesians, chapter one, Verse 22 and 23.

Speaker B:

Let's see, Matthew 16.

Speaker B:

That's what that was.

Speaker A:

13 through 19.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker B:

And they give me something to read later.

Speaker A:

And then we're going Where?

Speaker A:

Ephesians, chapter one, 22, Ephesians.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Now this is a letter to the church in Ephesus that Paul wrote.

Speaker A:

And you know, these are called Epistles, which are letters.

Speaker A:

And Paul is writing a letter to the church at Ephesus.

Speaker A:

And the people of Ephesus were called Ephesians, just like people here in Tennessee were called Tennesseeans.

Speaker A:

So this is a letter to the Ephesians which is at the church.

Speaker B:

Which verse?

Speaker A:

Chapter one.

Speaker A:

Let's look at verse 22 and 23.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker B:

And he put all things under his feet and gave him to be head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Speaker A:

Okay, I know what that means.

Speaker A:

Well, I don't want to go too deep in this.

Speaker A:

I was like, what's, what's simplistic in there?

Speaker A:

What does it.

Speaker A:

That passage say that the church is.

Speaker B:

Well, I don't know.

Speaker B:

Okay, like, let's see.

Speaker B:

He put all things under his feet and gave him to be head over all things to the church, which is.

Speaker A:

His body, the fullness.

Speaker B:

I don't know.

Speaker B:

I have no idea.

Speaker A:

Yeah, it's right there going put to me.

Speaker A:

It's not.

Speaker A:

No, it's not.

Speaker A:

I mean, I know you're smart enough to figure this out.

Speaker A:

They put him over right there.

Speaker A:

Put him over the head.

Speaker A:

Over the head of the church.

Speaker A:

And then it says one is the church.

Speaker A:

It tells you the very next one.

Speaker A:

Put things right over the church.

Speaker A:

What.

Speaker B:

Is the witches inviting?

Speaker A:

Well, what is the church?

Speaker B:

Oh, okay.

Speaker B:

My concept.

Speaker B:

I'm getting there.

Speaker B:

I'm there.

Speaker B:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker B:

He's talking about Jesus's body.

Speaker B:

And coming to Jesus is the church.

Speaker A:

Like, he is the church is the church.

Speaker B:

Yes, Church which is his body.

Speaker B:

Okay, so this is describing the fullness.

Speaker A:

Of him who fills all in all.

Speaker A:

So he is the one that feels all in all.

Speaker A:

He's the one who fulfilled.

Speaker A:

Remember we were talking about the old covenant, Right.

Speaker A:

And doing away with all covenant coming in.

Speaker A:

Jesus fulfilled the old covenant.

Speaker A:

He fulfilled all in all.

Speaker A:

He is.

Speaker A:

And he is a church.

Speaker A:

Now let's.

Speaker A:

Let's continue Rolling.

Speaker A:

Let's look at Acts, chapter 20, verse 28.

Speaker A:

So we've looked at Matthew.

Speaker A:

We've looked at Ephesians.

Speaker A:

Matthew says that Jesus was the builder.

Speaker A:

He built his church, and the church belongs to him.

Speaker A:

He built it upon himself as the foundation.

Speaker A:

And he says there in Ephesians that he, the church is his body.

Speaker A:

Now Acts, chapter 20 and verse 28.

Speaker A:

What does it say?

Speaker B:

Let's see, Acts, chapter 20.

Speaker B:

Sorry, folks, I shouldn't done had this thing left over.

Speaker B:

All right, chapter 20, which verse 28.

Speaker B:

28.

Speaker B:

Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to the shepherd, the church of God, which he purchased with his own blood.

Speaker A:

All right, so this is a letter or this is talking to the.

Speaker A:

To the elders of a particular church.

Speaker A:

And he's telling these elders that.

Speaker A:

That you're going to be overseers of that church.

Speaker A:

You're going to be the leaders of that church.

Speaker A:

But what I'm talking about or what I want to draw out of this passage is that last portion, and it's talking about the church that Jesus built.

Speaker A:

It says, which he what.

Speaker B:

Purchased with his own blood.

Speaker A:

With his own blood.

Speaker A:

All right, so now his church, that he built and built it upon himself as the foundation.

Speaker A:

He says, this is my body, and not only is it my body, not only is all these things.

Speaker A:

Now he's saying, hey, I spilled my blood for this church.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

This church belongs to me.

Speaker A:

I spilled my blood for this church.

Speaker A:

I mean, you agree with that?

Speaker A:

Absolutely.

Speaker A:

Because that's what it says, right?

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

All right, this is.

Speaker A:

I'm telling you, I'm going to take you down a simple road, man.

Speaker A:

Now, Ephesians, back to Ephesians.

Speaker A:

Let's look at Ephesians 5 and 23.

Speaker A:

Oh, Lord, I'm going to do my best to keep this simple that anybody and everybody can understand.

Speaker A:

That's what's wrong a lot of times with religion today.

Speaker A:

People try to convolute and complicate things.

Speaker B:

Well, they try to have way more knowledgeable than they actually.

Speaker A:

I mean, it doesn't take a scholar, doesn't take a genius to figure this stuff out.

Speaker A:

Just takes a little bit of guidance, a little bit every now and then.

Speaker B:

A little bit of work on your own.

Speaker A:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

It takes a muscle and a shovel to get down to it.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Visions 5 and 23.

Speaker B:

All right, for the husband.

Speaker B:

Let's see, the husband is the head of the wife, as also Christ is the head of the church, and he is the savior of the body.

Speaker A:

Oh, all right.

Speaker A:

I think ultimately we're here today, or we're doing this podcast because you're going to try to get to the eventual question, how do I be saved?

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker A:

So, but earlier on in this episode, you asked, is the church important?

Speaker A:

And so now I've laid down this foundation.

Speaker A:

We talk about who it is, who built it, what was it built upon?

Speaker A:

The fact that it is his body, the fact that they person with his blood.

Speaker A:

And now what do we see here In Ephesians chapter 5 and verse 23, the last, he says, Christ is the.

Speaker B:

Head of the church.

Speaker A:

All right, and then what?

Speaker B:

And is the savior of the body.

Speaker A:

All right, well, what was the body?

Speaker B:

The body is the church.

Speaker A:

So what does this start telling you?

Speaker A:

I mean, am I right?

Speaker A:

I mean, that's what we said.

Speaker A:

I mean, that's what Ephesians said, right?

Speaker A:

It says that Ephesians 2:1, 22 and 23, it says the church was Christ body.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

And now in Ephesians 5 and 23, Christ says, I am the head of the church and I am the savior of the body.

Speaker A:

So the church is Christ's body.

Speaker A:

Jesus is the head of that church, and Jesus is going to save his body.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

Let's keep going.

Speaker A:

Ephesians 5 saying.

Speaker A:

No, no, I'm sorry.

Speaker A:

Go with Acts, chapter two and verse 47.

Speaker A:

Acts two and 47.

Speaker A:

Just back a few pages, bro.

Speaker A:

Got you.

Speaker B:

Acts two, 47.

Speaker A:

Yeah, almost there.

Speaker B:

I said I was almost there.

Speaker B:

Man, these deck of pikes are thin.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

All right, 47.

Speaker B:

Praising God and having favor with all the people.

Speaker B:

And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

Speaker B:

Wait a minute, I got sidetracked on that one.

Speaker B:

Praising God and having favor with all the people, and the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

Speaker A:

That's it.

Speaker A:

Okay, that's it.

Speaker A:

That's it.

Speaker A:

All right.

Speaker A:

So this is actually on the day of Pentecost, when the church was first established.

Speaker A:

We'll talk about that later.

Speaker A:

But what I want to draw out of this passage is.

Speaker A:

Yeah, I didn't understand.

Speaker B:

I don't know that much.

Speaker A:

Well, husband, who added who to the church praise and having favor?

Speaker B:

The Lord did.

Speaker A:

The Lord.

Speaker B:

The people.

Speaker A:

What kind of people?

Speaker A:

I don't know.

Speaker A:

Those people who were what?

Speaker B:

Saved?

Speaker A:

They were being saved.

Speaker B:

Okay, yeah.

Speaker B:

Those people.

Speaker B:

Yes, yes.

Speaker B:

Okay, I got you.

Speaker B:

The Lord added to the church does it for those who are being saved.

Speaker B:

Okay, yes, go.

Speaker A:

The Lord add you to what his church upon salvation.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

On being Saved.

Speaker A:

All right, so now again, because we're trying to get back to this question.

Speaker A:

How important is the church?

Speaker A:

And can you be a Christian and not be in the church?

Speaker A:

So we say that it's Jesus, the church.

Speaker A:

He built it.

Speaker A:

He built it upon himself as a foundation.

Speaker A:

He says that he is his body.

Speaker A:

He says, I am the Savior of the body.

Speaker A:

I purchased this church with my blood.

Speaker A:

And now we see that you were added to that church upon being saved.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

Tracking.

Speaker A:

We're good?

Speaker B:

Yeah, I'm dragging.

Speaker A:

All right, now let's roll back to Ephesians, chapter 5, 25 through 26.

Speaker B:

Five 26, as you say.

Speaker A:

Yes.

Speaker B:

Okay, let's see.

Speaker A:

20.

Speaker B:

You said 25 and 26 or just.

Speaker A:

26 to where he is?

Speaker A:

25 and 26.

Speaker B:

Our husbands love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for her that he might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of.

Speaker B:

The washing of water by the Word.

Speaker A:

All right, so what I want us.

Speaker A:

Now I'm going to start shifting a little bit, and I'm going to see how important the church is to Christ.

Speaker A:

So this passage is referred to, you know, this is talking about marriage, talking about Christ in the church.

Speaker A:

So he gives this analogy in this relationship between a husband and wife needs to be.

Speaker A:

Their relationship needs to be like my relationship is with the church.

Speaker A:

And Christ says, so basically, he's referring.

Speaker A:

He's the husband and the church is his wife.

Speaker A:

So he says, love your wife just as like I have loved the church.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker A:

And he says, I am the Savior.

Speaker A:

And we talked about that.

Speaker A:

It says, I'm the church when I gave myself for the church now.

Speaker A:

So Christ loved the church as a wife, as a husband loves a wife and gave himself for.

Speaker A:

Now let's look all the way back to Revelations, the last book of the New Testament.

Speaker A:

Let's look at verse or chapter 19.

Speaker B:

Revelations.

Speaker B:

That's a scary one, ain't it?

Speaker B:

Well, some people think it's scary.

Speaker A:

It's a little difficult, but you can understand it, too.

Speaker B:

All right, Revelations 19.

Speaker B:

Which verse?

Speaker A:

Six through nine.

Speaker B:

Six through nine.

Speaker B:

And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thundering saying.

Speaker A:

We'll sell you, huh?

Speaker B:

Hallelujah, Hallelujah for the Lord God omnipotent reigns.

Speaker B:

Let us be glad and rejoice and give him glory.

Speaker B:

For the marriage of the Lamb has come and his wife has made himself herself.

Speaker B:

Ready.

Speaker A:

All right, so again, back.

Speaker A:

Back to where we were at in Ephesians, Christ says he give.

Speaker A:

He builds that relationship between a husband and a wife.

Speaker A:

And he's the.

Speaker A:

He's the husband, he's the groom, and the church is his bride.

Speaker A:

We see here in Revelations as we're getting toward.

Speaker A:

Toward the end of judgment or whatever, the bride is now prepared for the groom.

Speaker A:

Okay, so where I'm going with all this is how important is the church to Jesus?

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

Well, how important is your wife to you?

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

She's pretty dang on for probably the.

Speaker A:

Most important person in this world to you.

Speaker B:

Yeah, her and my kids.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker A:

So.

Speaker A:

So how important is the church?

Speaker A:

Christ?

Speaker A:

When Christ says, the church is my bride, not only is the church my bride, it's my bride.

Speaker A:

To the point that I die for the bride, to the point that I shed not blood for it, it's the bride through the fact that she is my body, it's the bride.

Speaker A:

It's.

Speaker A:

It's important to me.

Speaker A:

To the fact that I.

Speaker A:

It's my church.

Speaker A:

I built it.

Speaker A:

And I built it upon myself as the foundation.

Speaker A:

So how important is the church?

Speaker A:

I would say, yeah, if you want to be saved, what is about Who.

Speaker A:

Who is Christ want to say?

Speaker B:

The people that seek him in his church.

Speaker A:

What.

Speaker A:

What we.

Speaker A:

He's going to save the body, right?

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

What?

Speaker A:

According to the scriptures, he's saving the body.

Speaker A:

What is the body?

Speaker A:

The body is his, jerk.

Speaker A:

So how important is church?

Speaker A:

Can you be saved?

Speaker A:

Can you be a Christian without the church?

Speaker A:

I wouldn't chance it.

Speaker A:

Yeah, because I just read from the scriptures right there, black and white with you that says Jesus is going to save the body, and the church is his body.

Speaker A:

I want to be saved, so I better be in his body if I want to be saved.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

Is that a safe assessment?

Speaker A:

That's.

Speaker B:

That's.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker A:

All right, now let's continue to Hebrews, chapter 10.

Speaker A:

Hebrews.

Speaker A:

We were there a little while ago, just back a few.

Speaker A:

Few pages.

Speaker A:

Chapter 10 and chapter 10, verse 25.

Speaker A:

Now, because you asked, you asked also at the beginning of this podcast, you said, do I have to go every Sunday in 25?

Speaker A:

What does it say?

Speaker B:

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another.

Speaker B:

And so much the more you see the.

Speaker B:

The day approaching.

Speaker A:

All right, well, let's break that down.

Speaker B:

Yeah, we all need to.

Speaker A:

The Christian standard Bible renders that passage.

Speaker A:

You know, a lot of times, Josh, when I'm studying with somebody and I'm studying different passages, we go to different versions, just so we can get a better understanding.

Speaker A:

Some versions render things or translate things a little easier to understand.

Speaker A:

So according to the Christian standard version, here's what that says.

Speaker A:

Not neglecting the gathering together, as some are in the habit of doing.

Speaker A:

So.

Speaker A:

This is a commandment.

Speaker A:

All right?

Speaker A:

Now the, the Scriptures teach.

Speaker A:

And we can talk about this.

Speaker A:

There's a lot we're going to talk about.

Speaker A:

Lord Will, there's a lot we can do, absolutely.

Speaker A:

But the, the Scriptures teach implicitly, explicitly and necessary inference.

Speaker A:

And those, those are how the command, how the word of God gives commands to his.

Speaker A:

To his children with a.

Speaker A:

It's implied with the passengers where it's plainly commanded, do this, don't do that.

Speaker A:

And then when you can necessarily infer from something.

Speaker A:

But right here is a commandment that says, do not forsake the assembling of yourselves together, as some of you have got a habit of doing, you know.

Speaker A:

So he's saying, you know, when you come together, don't neglect it.

Speaker A:

Acts, chapter 20 and verse 7, Josh, I'll give us there.

Speaker A:

Acts 20, verse 7 says, now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, while ready to depart the next day, spoke with them and continued his message until midnight.

Speaker A:

So now the first man of the week.

Speaker A:

When did these.

Speaker A:

When did the disciples gather together?

Speaker B:

Supposed to be on the first day of the week.

Speaker A:

First day of the week.

Speaker A:

When's the first day of the week?

Speaker B:

Sunday.

Speaker A:

All right?

Speaker A:

And the Bible says, gather yourself together on the first day of the week.

Speaker A:

Then it says here in Hebrews:

Speaker A:

Forsaking the assembly of yourselves together, right?

Speaker A:

And some of you've got a habit of doing so Paul is correcting, you know, the author of Hebrews here is correcting an issue that some of them had a bad habit of going sitting home to watch the ball game instead of going to church or going through the woods to find a deer stand instead of going to church.

Speaker A:

Whatever the situation was back in those days, the author says, look, quit that.

Speaker A:

You ain't.

Speaker A:

You can't be neglecting the assembly of yourselves together, okay?

Speaker A:

So the first day of the week we established.

Speaker A:

Now, let's go back to that one, because I want to ask this question.

Speaker A:

He says, now, on the first day of the week when the disciples came together, which first day of the week it'd be?

Speaker B:

Sunday.

Speaker A:

There's only one first man of the week, right?

Speaker B:

Yes, yes.

Speaker A:

Now is, I didn't know where he was going with that for well, is it the first day of the week for the first week of the month?

Speaker A:

Is it, is it the first day of the week for two weeks out of the month?

Speaker A:

Is it the first day of the week for three weeks out of the month?

Speaker A:

You know, you got 52 Sundays in the year.

Speaker A:

Is it, is it gathered together on the first day of the week for 45 of those 52.

Speaker A:

What does the, what's the passage say?

Speaker B:

It just straight up says the first day.

Speaker A:

So what would that imply?

Speaker B:

I guess every Sunday that what?

Speaker A:

I mean, what?

Speaker B:

Yeah, yes.

Speaker A:

I mean I, I don't see any reason to believe that it was the.

Speaker A:

I could pick and choose which Sunday it was because the Bible says now only first day of the week.

Speaker A:

You know, it doesn't really give me a whole lot of choice.

Speaker A:

And I can say, you know, that's, I could go first thing of the week on this week, but I ain't gonna do the first day of the week next week.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

How do you make that determination?

Speaker B:

Well, when it comes to this, you don't make a determination.

Speaker A:

You're supposed to go every Sunday, let's read the Bible for what it says, let's do what it says and let's not try to conform this Word of God to what we want to do.

Speaker A:

Let's, let's conform what we want to do to what this Word of God says that we should do.

Speaker A:

That's how I'm going to live, right?

Speaker A:

That's how I want to make sure I get to heaven.

Speaker A:

That's how I want to make sure my family gets to heaven is I want to do what the Bible says for me to do.

Speaker A:

So now we've gone through quite a bit, surely I've given you enough evidence to show that the church is not a building.

Speaker A:

Like according to Google says the church is actually the assembly of the call out.

Speaker A:

The church is Christ built.

Speaker A:

It was his church.

Speaker A:

He built it upon the foundation that he is the son of God.

Speaker A:

People purchased it by his blood, the Christ or the church is the bride of Christ.

Speaker A:

Now all this is coming from what we've read, right?

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

Tell me if you disagree with him.

Speaker B:

I'm going with you.

Speaker A:

I'm going with you.

Speaker A:

So the Christ is, is the.

Speaker A:

Or the church is the bride of Christ.

Speaker A:

The church is his body.

Speaker A:

Christ is the savior of the body.

Speaker A:

So I bounce the question back to you.

Speaker A:

We're going to play ping pong here and I'LL volley it back to you.

Speaker A:

Is the church important and can a man be saved outside of the church?

Speaker B:

No, the church is important and no.

Speaker A:

I don't think you can.

Speaker A:

By what I'm reading.

Speaker B:

And also the every Sunday thing, like, we'll just say, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together.

Speaker B:

So don't take for granted not going.

Speaker B:

Is that right?

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Now, I mean, there's, there's so much more to be said, you know, about, you know, a lot of people say, well, what about, okay, if I gotta go Sunday morning?

Speaker A:

Well, what about Sunday night?

Speaker A:

What about Wednesday night?

Speaker A:

And what about any revival gospel meetings?

Speaker A:

You know, do I gotta go all in?

Speaker A:

Well, the Bible also said, and I think, you know, would you consider going to church a good thing?

Speaker B:

I think it's absolutely.

Speaker A:

It's a good thing.

Speaker B:

So a lot of people look at it as an inconvenience, though.

Speaker A:

But, but it's a good practice, right?

Speaker A:

It's a good thing for you.

Speaker A:

It's a good thing for your family.

Speaker A:

It's, it's.

Speaker A:

Some people would even say it's a good work.

Speaker A:

It's a work that we do as a child of God, as a Christian, we go and we assemble with the saints and we worship God together.

Speaker A:

It's a good thing.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

The Bible also says, let me just make sure and give you the reference, because I don't know the reference.

Speaker A:

So.

Speaker B:

The old Google machine, sometimes it's very convenient, isn't it?

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Well, what are you looking for?

Speaker A:

For those who know James 14, 4 and 17, James, chapter 4 and 17 says, for those who know to do good and does not do it to him, and is a scene.

Speaker A:

So now to answer this question, Should I go on Wednesday night?

Speaker A:

Should I go put that on me.

Speaker B:

Didn't you?

Speaker A:

If you don't, the Bible says, blame me.

Speaker A:

Check it out.

Speaker A:

Look it up.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

James, chapter 4, verse 17, says, for those, for my children, for the same for the Christians, for those who know to do good and do not do it by him, it is a sin.

Speaker A:

So do you need to go on Sunday night?

Speaker A:

Wednesday night is, we know it's commanding to go upon the first day of the week.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker A:

So if you know the good and you don't do it, you sin.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

So, but, Josh, I hope that I've answered these questions for you.

Speaker A:

I hope for the audience.

Speaker A:

I hope it's interesting questions.

Speaker A:

Well.

Speaker B:

And it also gives them plenty of reference points in their podcast where, I mean, we're not going to sit here and everything's not going to be answered 100%.

Speaker B:

Like what?

Speaker B:

You got to do a little bit of work yourself and read it, but, like, kind of give you the high, the wave tops, I guess they'd say.

Speaker A:

And I'm just, I'm just here as a roadmap.

Speaker A:

I'm trying to point you in the direction.

Speaker A:

I'm not trying to convince you of what I believe.

Speaker A:

I'm trying to convince you of what the Bible says.

Speaker A:

So I'm just pointing you to the script, right?

Speaker A:

You make up your mind on what it says.

Speaker A:

That's what I hope to do in this audience as well.

Speaker A:

If you're out there and you got any questions, you know, I got a Facebook page, Facebook messengers and IWTK podcast.

Speaker A:

I would love to hear from you.

Speaker A:

We appreciate you being with us today.

Speaker A:

We invite you back next week.

Speaker A:

We're going to release every.

Speaker A:

Every Monday is the plan, Lord willing.

Speaker A:

So, Josh, thank you for your question, insight to the audience.

Speaker A:

We appreciate you.

Speaker A:

We love you.

Speaker A:

We wish you Godspeed and until next time, God bless.

Speaker B:

Thank you.

Speaker A:

It.
