David Spoon:It turns out this was actually from the Lord.

David Spoon:Next, as they're traveling, Abraham told Sarah, you're an extremely beautiful woman and they're gonna see you and they're gonna say, hey, let's kill this guy and take the gal.
David Spoon:But instead, here's my plan.
David Spoon:I want you to tell them you're my sister, to be straightforward about it.
David Spoon:Genesis 20 shows that they are in fact brother and sister, but only half brother and sister.
David Spoon:That said, Abraham's approach was still very deceptive.
David Spoon:But in verse 17 it says, the Lord sent a terrible plague on Pharaoh, his household, because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
David Spoon:God has a standard that will not change when his children are involved, even when they mess up.
David Spoon:Okay, that means you and me.
David Spoon:When his children are involved and even when they mess up, God will protect them and judge those who come after them.
David Spoon:Pharaoh had no right to approach or even try to claim Sarah, by the way, because Sarah was also a child of the most high God.

David Spoon:So what I do is I basically, I'm reading from six different books in my devotional time when I'm reading, because that's just how it works out for me.
David Spoon:And so on this day, today I was in First Peter, chapter one.
David Spoon:And there's that passage in the classic King James that says, gird up the loins of your mind.
David Spoon:And that means, be in your brain, in your mind, in your being, in your thought processing.
David Spoon:Be ready, be alert, be prepared.
David Spoon:And that starts with the attic upstairs.
David Spoon:Between your left and right ear, between your left and right nostril, between your left and right pupil.
David Spoon:That we have a mind that's ready to honor our King, to be used for anything, but that we are conscious enough of the Lord to be directed by the Lord and not so caught up in our own stuff that it swallows us whole.

David Spoon:That's what it is.

David Spoon:I do want to back it up to where the Lord appeared to Abraham and told him he's going to give him all this land and all this offspring.
David Spoon:And in verse eight, basically.
David Spoon:Basically, it's verse eight, it says this and Abram not yet Abraham, so forgive me when I crosses over.
David Spoon:Abram built an altar there to commemorate the Lord's visit.

David Spoon:After that, Abraham traveled southward and set up camp in the hill country between Bethel and the west of AI to the east.

David Spoon:It's like five things I can teach out of this, and maybe I'll come back to this.
David Spoon:The first thing I want you to catch is this.

David Spoon:The last time we were in prayer and were obedient before the Lord and his presence swept over you, did you commemorate?
David Spoon:Did you say, thank you?
David Spoon:Did you acknowledge it?
David Spoon:Did you build an altar to him?
David Spoon:That's what it's talking about.
David Spoon:Isn't that cool?
David Spoon:Hey, when the Lord visits, commemorate it, because he visits you and it changes you, Dave.

David Spoon:So the next time you're in this situation and you're like, I don't seem to be able to get my connection to the Lord, you can look back and go, oh, look, I do have a connection to the Lord.

David Spoon:It's thank you for everything and anything you've ever done for me, God, commemorate it.
David Spoon:Just like Abraham did by building an altar because the Lord visited him.

David Spoon:If God visits you and comforts you in the night, that is a visit.
David Spoon:Commemorate it.
David Spoon:That's the least that we can do.

David Spoon:But I want you to hear this one thing.
David Spoon:So after we just talked about Abraham and remember we said he built an altar to commemorate the Lord's visit, which I think is very important, by the way, just in case you understand, it's very important.
David Spoon:But then look at.
David Spoon:So he built an altar to the Lord.
David Spoon:That's verse seven.
David Spoon:Now look at the end of verse eight, it says this.
David Spoon:Abraham traveled southward and set up a camp in the hill country between Bethel and the west of AI on the east.
David Spoon:There he built an altar and worshiped the Lord.
David Spoon:Let me explain something to you.
David Spoon:I mean, I'm explaining it to you.
David Spoon:You gonna explain?
David Spoon:Are you gonna mansplain it?
David Spoon:Are you gonna womansplain it?
David Spoon:No, I'm gonna Bible explain it to you.

David Spoon:Abraham set up another altar and worshiped the Lord there.
David Spoon:He wasn't worshiping the altar.
David Spoon:He was using the altar to worship the Lord.
David Spoon:And what he did was he was giving acknowledgement.
David Spoon:And he was making sure that in his own mind, his own heart, his own being, he was giving God the appreciation for God's faithfulness.
David Spoon:Now what's amazing about this that people will miss is actually, I think by the time it's said and dead, Abraham set up at least three, maybe four, but at least three altars.
David Spoon:Here's the thing.
David Spoon:He does it so he can say thank you.
David Spoon:I mean, I know people don't.
David Spoon:Well, that's not what it.
David Spoon:No, no, you don't understand.
David Spoon:He built that altar unto the Lord.
David Spoon:He worshiped the Lord at that altar.
David Spoon:At the other one, he commemorates the Lord's visit.
David Spoon:He's giving acknowledgement to God.
David Spoon:That's what this example of faith, this man who was from Genesis 12 and all through the New Testament, you don't have to spend a long time figuring that out, built altars to the Lord to say, thank you, I worship you, I love you, I appreciate you.

David Spoon:So I could probably still do my haftarah, but it's been a long time anyway.
David Spoon:All right, so you got your trivia question.

David Spoon:And now I'm not going to be hesitant to share because I got verification.
David Spoon:So in my new living translation.
David Spoon:So I use multiple translations for you guys to try to figure it out.
David Spoon:Okay, I'll just give you a kind of a quick list.
David Spoon:I use niv, nlt, esv, the BSB, which is Berean Standard Bible, King James, New King James, New American Standard.
David Spoon:I use the NASB from 77, legacy bio, the amplified Bible, Christian Standard, and Holman.
David Spoon:I also every once in a while use the American Standard, but English Revised, God's Word translation.
David Spoon:Good news.
David Spoon:I also use Majority Standard Bible, Net Bible, Newhart, English Bible, Webster's Bible Translation.
David Spoon:I love them all.
David Spoon:I just love them.
David Spoon:One of the most accurate but less fun to read is the Net Bible.
David Spoon:I was turned down this by one of my teachers in my master's class who's like, they did a really good job.
David Spoon:Da da da da da da.
David Spoon:So in my NLT it says this and I'm bringing it up for a very particular reason, so just bear with me.
David Spoon:It says in verse 9 in the NLT then Abraham traveled south by stages towards the Negev.
David Spoon:And so I wasn't going to say anything about that because that's nlt and I thought sometimes they're a little softer in the translation.
David Spoon:And if you look at the other ones, it says Abraham journeyed on continuing towards the Negev or New King James going on still towards the Negev, towards the South.
David Spoon:But the NET Bible and I was very surprised by this just a couple minutes ago that says Abraham continually journeyed by stages down to the Negev.
David Spoon:And the Net Bible is very, very meticulous.
David Spoon:And so with having the mouth of two or three witnesses let every word be established, I feel much more comfortable to share this with you.
David Spoon:In verse 9 of Genesis 12, the NLT and the net Bible say that he journeyed in stages.
David Spoon:And I think it's really important for, for you and I to understand that that is exactly how your walk is.
David Spoon:You don't just become a Christian and all of a sudden there's nothing left and you've achieved everything.
David Spoon:And I think it's fair for every one of us to be honest and say it does seem like it goes in stages.
David Spoon:And in those stages there are different emphases.
David Spoon:Sometimes there are things in our life that we would do really good that are polished, maybe, so we do them better, and some things that we're doing poorly that God has us work on, so we'll do better in general.
David Spoon:But it is by stages.
David Spoon:It is step by step.
David Spoon:We have confirmation for that in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that it is step by step and glory by glory.
David Spoon:And see, the reason I wasn't sure is because how they say it in this is the phrasing going on still means that it was step by step or journeying or stages.
David Spoon:And here's what I wanted to say, and I wasn't sure I was going to share it, but I'm glad the Lord's allowing me to your Christian walk is by stages.
David Spoon:We talked about this last week.
David Spoon:There's a road that's mapped out for you, a trail that's mapped out for you, and you go point to point.
David Spoon:And when they have a race, they have various points or stages, like, you know, like the bicycle race, where you reach a certain point, reach a certain point, reach a certain point.
David Spoon:That's how the Lord is building us to be Christ like.
David Spoon:And you don't need to be disappointed if you're not perfect in execution, because that's part of the growth during the stages.
David Spoon:But each and every stage adds to your character of being like Jesus us, even the ones that we do poorly in, because we know we're doing poorly and we want to do better.
David Spoon:And so while the Lord is teaching us, he's still taking us through this process stage by stage, step by step, learning by learning, so we don't need to be impatient.
David Spoon:God is not failing in his perfect timing and making us Christlike.
David Spoon:We are positionally Christ like now, and he's making us practically working out what he has declared us to be.
David Spoon:And we do it step by step and in stages.
David Spoon:My admonition and I fall into this foolishness is I try to speed it up.
David Spoon:And if you're wondering, Abraham obviously didn't remember this lesson, because when it came time for the Promised Child, he and Sarah both said, let's beat it up.
David Spoon:And then they got Ishmael out of it and it was a disaster.
David Spoon:We need to be patient as we're going stage to stage, and trust that the Lord Philippians 1:6, that he who has begun a good work in us will complete it.
David Spoon:He'll finish it.
David Spoon:He'll take us all the way, and he'll keep working on us.
David Spoon:He's not behind in moving you along.
David Spoon:He knows exactly where you need to be in your Christian journey.
David Spoon:After all, he's the author and the finisher, the completer of our salvation.
David Spoon:Trust him, his steps and his stages, they're perfect.
David Spoon:Okay.
David Spoon:All right.

David Spoon:So he ordered the carriage to stop, and they went down to the water and Philip baptized him.
David Spoon:When they came up out of the water, the spirit of the Lord caught Philip away.
David Spoon:The eunuch never saw him again, but went on his way, rejoicing.
David Spoon:I want to just.
David Spoon:And then I got one more point.
David Spoon:That's why I split it up this way.
David Spoon:Here's the thing.
David Spoon:And I know it's ridiculous to say, but I'm going to say it to you, and it's important for you to recognize there's a lot of trials going on right now in the world, in your life, in your family, in different people's lives.
David Spoon:I understand.
David Spoon:It happens for me, too, okay?
David Spoon:I got a daughter who's going through the mill.
David Spoon:I got a son who's recovering from COVID You know, you've got all these things going on, and people that we love having a hard time going through the up and the down.
David Spoon:And you know that there's a lot of that stuff going on.
David Spoon:I understand.
David Spoon:But there is another part of me that also understands this text.
David Spoon:The eunuch never saw him again, but went on his way, rejoicing.
David Spoon:Why was he rejoicing?
David Spoon:Because he saved.
David Spoon:That's why.
David Spoon:And all the stuff that we go through, it's a drag.
David Spoon:It's like.
David Spoon:But there is coming this moment where the fullness of the redemption of the salvation that's been granted to us by grace received by faith from the Father, through the Son and by the Holy Spirit.
David Spoon:We're going to get the fullness of that.
David Spoon:We'll be dancing on streets of gold.
David Spoon:There won't be any more pain, there won't be any more sorrow.
David Spoon:There won't be any more memory of all of the ridiculousness.
David Spoon:And it will be awesome.
David Spoon:And if that's not a reason to rejoice, then we have lost our minds.
David Spoon:We're going through a difficult spot and not every spot is difficult, let's at least be honest.
David Spoon:But if you're going through it for 60, 70, 80, 90 or 100 years, it has its moments.
David Spoon:But there is a salvation that is eternal, that doesn't have a limit to the number.
David Spoon:And this is, and I still say that what, what Rick Warren wrote in the Purpose Driven Life, that first page is the best page of the entire book.
David Spoon:You know, your life is like a 1 16th or 1 32nd of an inch on a hundred mile long piece of tape.
David Spoon:That's what this life is.
David Spoon:And it's important for us to understand that we have a cause for rejoicing.
David Spoon:And for all of the pain and the sorrow, there's nobody that ought to rejoice more than us.

David Spoon:Here's what I want you to catch, right?
David Spoon:In Abraham's engagement with God, he honored God each time the Lord was like, you know, speaking to him, guiding him, directing him.
David Spoon:And what I want to say to all of us is, and this is not to build idols, so don't get weird or anything.
David Spoon:It's just there should be this recognition that when the Lord speaks to you, even when you're reading His Word and the word leaps off the page and you know exactly what I'm talking about.
David Spoon:It's like you're reading it and all of a sudden the text becomes alive, really almost catching us off guard.
David Spoon:And we're like, wow, I never saw that.
David Spoon:That's fascinating.
David Spoon:And you just know there's this exchange between you and the Lord that he's teaching you and growing you and developing us and all these things.
David Spoon:We ought to have some kind of recognition for that.
David Spoon:We ought to have something inside of us that says, you know what, Lord, I'm going to jot this down.
David Spoon:I'm just going to take a piece of paper and start jotting down these little things.
David Spoon:These are things from memory.
David Spoon:That's actually, I have.
David Spoon: ,: David Spoon:And it's just like every time the Lord does something now I'm writing it down because then when I'm struggling, I go back and it reminds me how faithful he was.
David Spoon:And with the period that I'm going through, the stage that I'm going through is tough.
David Spoon:It encourages me that God has always pulled me through.
David Spoon:So I'm only asking you guys to do this, not to be weird about it, but to help all of us kind of grasp we really need to be actively appreciative in the moments that the Lord opens up our eyes, opens up our heart, opens up our mind and speaks to us or that he's just present with us.
David Spoon:It's just something we should do.
David Spoon:I really do believe that.
David Spoon:All right, so in your trivia question, who was the guy who saw filled with the Holy Spirit, saw right into heaven?
David Spoon:Now you'd have to like that because he was filled with the Spirit, so he could see right into heaven like that and said, lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
