Ghia – Turns out the word August means venerable, majestic, or greatly honored. Do you know anyone worthy of this title? During my seasonal journey through Life, I have opted to make the month of August a time to remember these people, to honor them, and most importantly, to apply the lessons of their lives to my own.

Hooray, GIA here.

:I'm this week's host of the Creative
Spiritual Journey podcast where Judy and I
3
:talk about those things that bring us joy.
4
:For me, I find joy by connecting
with nature, connecting with Jesus
5
:Christ and our heavenly parents.
6
:Seasonal living, and all the bits of magic
and wonder I come across while navigating
7
:this remarkable journey we call life.
8
:Wow.
9
:We have made it to the end of August.
10
:It's only a week until September.
11
:As I was contemplating where
August has gone, I found myself
12
:wondering about the name August.
13
:Beyond liking or disliking
the sound of a name.
14
:I have never given names much attention
in the past, but through my study
15
:of the gospel, I have started to
recognize the importance of names.
16
:Have you noticed, it seems to me that
God pays a lot of attention to names.
17
:Michael's name was changed to Adam
when he was placed in the Garden of
18
:Eden, and then the first thing Adam
did when he got there was name all
19
:the animals names aren't just random.
20
:Eve was given her name because
she is the mother of all living.
21
:Her name has a specific meaning.
22
:Jacob's name was changed to Israel.
23
:Joseph Smith's name was prophesied
thousands of years before he was born.
24
:Babies are given a name and a
blessing with a special ceremony,
25
:we use certain names in the temple.
26
:I have come to believe that
names are very important.
27
:So August, do you have any
idea where the name comes from?
28
:Turns out the month was named
after the first Roman Emperor
29
:Caesar Augustus, August Augustus.
30
:You can hear the similarity, but this
wasn't the Emperor's original name.
31
:His birth name was Gaas.
32
:Octavius, But it was changed to
Caesar when he took the throne after
33
:Julius Caesar and Augustus was added
as a title after he became emperor.
34
:The title Augustus means venerable,
majestic, or greatly honored.
35
:Now, personally, I don't really care
much about the man, Caesar Augustus.
36
:He doesn't have any significance to me.
37
:But Augustus as a title, as the
name of a month I Encounter every
38
:year, that captivates me, venerable,
majestic, greatly honored August
39
:in my attempt to live closer to
the earth to live seasonally.
40
:I thought it might be worthwhile
to dive deeper into this word,
41
:August and see what it means to me.
42
:Okay.
43
:As I pondered, a thought kept coming
to my mind, but I constantly pushed it
44
:away as not being rooted in my current
life, my life here in the desert,
45
:southwest of North America, but the
thought persisted, so I gave in, Which
46
:means that today I want to tell you about
my encounter with a venerable, majestic,
47
:and highly honored elephant named Nana.
48
:Yep.
49
:This encounter happened while I was
in South Africa visiting Judy this
50
:last May, but the story began sometime
around November of:
51
:before Judy left on her mission.
52
:Judy had been studying up on South
Africa when she came across a book
53
:called The Elephant Whisperer.
54
:One thing about Judy is she loves to give
gifts, so before I knew it, I had a copy
55
:of the Elephant Whisperer, and once I
started reading, I couldn't put it down.
56
:The story gripped me.
57
:Let me give you a brief summary.
58
:In 1999, Nana was part of a herd
that was known as problem elephants.
59
:The herd was notorious for breaking
through the electric fence of
60
:their preserve and wreaking
havoc on the local villagers.
61
:Without many options, the
Preserve authorities slated
62
:the whole herd for execution.
63
:This sounds horrible.
64
:I know, but there is no
shortage of elephants in Africa.
65
:In fact, they are overrunning the few
places where they are still able to live.
66
:with the price of transporting an animal
the size of an elephant, the authorities
67
:didn't feel they had any choice.
68
:Fortunately, the owner of a new
preserve called Tula Tula herd of
69
:the elephant's plight and managed to
secure the funding to have the whole
70
:herd transported to his preserve.
71
:Unfortunately, due to the unruly conduct
of our problem, elephants and the
72
:impatience of the authorities, the herd's,
matriarch, and several of her sisters
73
:were shot before relocation could happen.
74
:This meant that Nana, as the oldest
living daughter, was thrust into her
75
:new role as leader without any warning,
and after witnessing the violent death
76
:of her mother and family members.
77
:Add to that being forced into the
bed of a semi-truck being drugged
78
:and then driven across the country
only to arrive in a completely
79
:new habitat and locked in a Bomba.
80
:A Bomba is the holding area meant
to help the elephants adapt to
81
:their new environment, but was
most likely seen as a prison.
82
:Any idea what Nana decided to
do her first night in the Bomba?
83
:she got one of her sister elephants
to help her knock over a giant
84
:tree that she could tell would
hit the wires of the Bomba.
85
:When the wires broke, allowing her to
escape the confines of this inner prison,
86
:she charged the preserves outer fence,
withstanding the fierce electrical jolts.
87
:This required and proceeded to
lead the whole herd on a jail break.
88
:Yep.
89
:Within a day, Nana escaped.
90
:in case you are wondering how
Nana orchestrated this escape.
91
:Let me explain.
92
:When the herd is together, all of the
elephants will be doing their own things,
93
:eating where and whatever they want.
94
:Some of the elephants may wander off and
the kids may get impatient and begin
95
:roughhousing, but the herd doesn't go
anywhere until the matriarch says so.
96
:And when she does, everyone, will start
heading in the direction she goes.
97
:to humans.
98
:There is no sound.
99
:We hear nothing.
100
:So how do the elephants,
without seeing the matriarch
101
:know what she wants them to do?
102
:Any ideas?
103
:It's through deep low
rumblings from the stomach.
104
:Have you ever heard that?
105
:Crazy, huh?
106
:it's kind of a new discovery, but
scientists have learned that elephants
107
:communicate through stomach rumbles.
108
:And here is something else that's crazy.
109
:Elephants, despite their size, have
an uncanny ability to disappear.
110
:I've seen it one minute an elephant is
right in front of you, and the next,
111
:they have pushed their way into an
impenetrable, thorny bush and disappeared.
112
:So can you imagine the panic the preserve
owner was experiencing when Nana escaped?
113
:First of all, if he doesn't get
the elephants back, they will be
114
:shot or possibly kill a person.
115
:And second of all, if he doesn't get
them back, no one will ever trust
116
:his ability to care for wild animals
again, and his preserve will fail.
117
:This was a desperate situation after
several unsuccessful attempts to round
118
:up the elephants, the only choice was
to resort to a helicopter and gunshots.
119
:Faced with this trauma, Nana reluctantly
allowed her herd to be returned to the
120
:confines of the newly fortified Bomba.
121
:But Nana was not happy for weeks.
122
:She was seen in the middle of the night
threatening to charge the electric fence
123
:Each time the preserve owner who in his
desperation opted to sleep outside the
124
:Bomba, would talk to her in a calming
voice saying anything he could think of.
125
:You don't want to break out.
126
:Stay where it's safe.
127
:I know you're scared.
128
:I know you don't have any reason to trust
humans, but please stay in the Bomba.
129
:Whatever he said worked because
Nana never broke out again.
130
:Instead, she changed tactics.
131
:Maybe it was the preserve owner's
calming voice or some kind of animal
132
:intuition, but Nana seems to have to
decided to get her heard out of the
133
:Bomba by placating the preserve owner.
134
:she did this by snaking her trunk through
the wires of the electric fence and
135
:caressing the chest of the preserve owner
leaving behind a trail of elephant snot.
136
:Her tactics worked.
137
:The owner decided Nana could
be trusted and that it was time
138
:to let her out of the Bomba.
139
:The book goes on to relate story.
140
:After story of the amazing nana
and her herd of elephants, Nana
141
:found safety for the elephants.
142
:During a fire, she stood for hours
in the blazing African sun with no
143
:water to shade a newborn elephant.
144
:And during this whole time, Nana,
this wild animal kept up a friendly
145
:relationship with the preserve owner.
146
:In fact, upon his unexpected passing
from a heart attack, Nana brought
147
:the whole herd to his funeral.
148
:Isn't that amazing?
149
:To us, it seems she would've had no way
of knowing he had died, but obviously
150
:she knew and she came and it gets better.
151
:Exactly.
152
:One year later, she returned.
153
:It appears she came back to
honor her long lost friend.
154
:uh, tell me that doesn't melt your heart.
155
:Sadly, Nana is no longer the matriarch.
156
:When she began going blind, her
daughter Frankie, took over.
157
:When Frankie died of a liver
disease, Frankie's oldest
158
:daughter became matriarch.
159
:But as you can imagine, as the
oldest member of the herd, Nana
160
:is treated with great respect.
161
:Now before I got to South Africa,
Judy got to visit Tula Tula for her
162
:birthday, and while she was out
on a game drive, Nana appeared and
163
:walked right up to the Safari vehicle.
164
:Judy was so excited, and while Nana
was walking past the driver happened to
165
:mention that Nana had just turned 60.
166
:Guess what?
167
:Judy and Nana are the same age.
168
:How fun is that?
169
:Now you can imagine that when I
got to spend a few days at Tula
170
:Tula, I had the secret hope of also
getting to see this majestic animal.
171
:But day after day, we didn't see her
on the very last drive, our guide
172
:pointed out an elephant named Nady.
173
:Nady is one of Nana's daughters.
174
:She is a huge elephant, and at the
time she was nursing a young bull and
175
:I decided I would have to be happy with
just seeing one of Nana's daughters.
176
:Now it's interesting to note that Nady was
wearing a tracking device around her neck.
177
:Tula Tula has several species.
178
:They monitor with tracking devices,
including the highly poached rhinoceros,
179
:the elephants, and the cheetahs.
180
:But only the Preserve Manager is ever
allowed to access this information.
181
:None of the Safari drivers can
track the animals, and not even
182
:the preserve Rangers who patrol the
park are privy to this information.
183
:That is because the preserve doesn't
want any of its employees faced
184
:with threats or bribes from poachers.
185
:So when I saw Nady with a tracker
around her neck, I had to wonder
186
:why she isn't the matriarch.
187
:Knowing where she is wouldn't necessarily
tell anyone where the herd is.
188
:I had also learned that putting a
tracking device on an elephant is
189
:dangerous because there is no way of
knowing which way an animal will fall.
190
:given the size of an elephant, falling
the wrong way can be quite dangerous.
191
:So why track Nady?
192
:When I asked our guide, I learned
that Nady keeps watch over her mother.
193
:Nady is always close to Nana.
194
:Isn't that amazing?
195
:I mean, I have heard that elephants
have strong family bonds, but
196
:I had no idea they would watch
over each other so closely.
197
:this means that in order to save Nana
the hassle and danger of being drugged
198
:for a tracker, the preserve had tagged
Nandy a much younger, healthier elephant.
199
:Instead.
200
:Now, why is the preserve so
concerned about Nana's whereabouts?
201
:Is it simply her venerable status?
202
:I can't say for sure, but
there is one thing I do know
203
:over an elephant's lifetime,
204
:They get three sets of giant molars
that they use to masticate their food.
205
:Once the last set of teeth has been
worn out, an elephant can no longer
206
:eat and dies based on her age.
207
:Nana is perilously close to having her
last set of teeth wear out As I sat
208
:in the Safari vehicle pondering this
and watching Nady nurse her baby, lo
209
:and behold, Nana appeared out of the
bush and walked straight towards us.
210
:I was so excited I didn't
even pull out my camera.
211
:All I wanted to do was absorb the moment.
212
:Can I just say that South
African elephants are huge.
213
:Even the pores of their skin are huge.
214
:And yes, I was close enough to see
them and being in the presence of
215
:this animal and knowing some of
her story, oh, it was powerful.
216
:So powerful that if I had my way Nana's
name would be changed to Nana Augustus.
217
:To Nana the majestic,
venerable, and greatly honored.
218
:Which leads us back to where
we find ourselves today.
219
:At the end of August, we
are in this spiral of life.
220
:It's going around and around
from month to month in a
221
:constant, predictable repetition,
222
:And we know that as we get
older, we spiral through the
223
:months faster and faster.
224
:Why did God design our seasons this way?
225
:Do you think it has a purpose?
226
:Is there something we are to
learn as we repeat this pattern?
227
:I think there is, and if that's the case,
what shall we do with this month of August
228
:when we come across it year after year?
229
:I don't know about you, but I am going
to erase Caesar Augustus from my calendar
230
:and replace him with Nana Augustus.
231
:the month of August, at least
in my mind, will now be named in
232
:honor of Nana Is there anyone in
your life worthy of this title?
233
:Have you taken the time
to ponder their story?
234
:As part of my ongoing spiral through
the seasons of life, I have decided I
235
:will make the month of August a time to
contemplate the lives of such Augustus
236
:beings, whether human or animal.
237
:And do my best to remember them,
honor them, and most importantly,
238
:apply the lessons of their lives
to my own in an effort to walk even
239
:timidly in their giant footprints.
240
:Judy and I know your time is precious
and that you have many choices.

250

the more truly ourselves we become.
251
:I don't know about you, but
I want to let God help me
252
:become a little more like Nana.
253
:Namaste.
