Have you ever noticed how quickly you ask everyone else what they think before asking yourself?
If you grew up in a dysfunctional home, that isn't because you're indecisive—it's because you learned to survive by paying attention to everyone else's needs before your own.
In this week's Tammy's Takes, I expand on one of the biggest takeaways from my conversation with therapist and author Shari Foos: learning to reconnect with your own voice.
As children, many of us became experts at reading the room. We learned to recognize moods, anticipate conflict, and make ourselves smaller to stay safe. Over time, we became incredibly skilled at understanding everyone else—but disconnected from ourselves.
Healing isn't about learning to make perfect decisions.
It's about trusting yourself enough to make a decision, adjusting when you need to, and believing you'll be okay either way.
In this episode, I talk about why self-trust is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, how your nervous system influences your decision-making, and one simple practice you can begin using today to start rebuilding confidence in your own inner voice.
If you haven't already, I encourage you to listen to my full conversation with Shari Foos on this week's episode of Adult Child of Dysfunction. Her insights on storytelling, authenticity, and healing beautifully complement today's conversation.
Healing doesn't happen all at once—it happens one small, intentional step at a time.

Hello everybody, and welcome back
to another episode of Tammy's Takes,
2
:where we take powerful conversations
with our guests and we turn them into
3
:practical strategies that you can
use right here, right now, today.
4
:So this week I had the privilege of
talking with therapist and author
5
:Shari Foos, and she said one thing
that really stayed with me, and
6
:I wanna talk about that today.
7
:She talked about learning
to listen to yourself again.
8
:And the more I thought about it after our
conversation, the more I realized this
9
:is one of the biggest struggles I see,
not just in my coaching clients, but in
10
:almost every adult child of dysfunction.
11
:People will come to me and
they'll ask me questions like,
12
:"What do you think I should do?
13
:Should I leave the relationship?
14
:Should I stay?
15
:Should I take the job?
16
:Should I set the boundary?
17
:Should I move?
18
:Should I forgive them?"
19
:The list goes on and on.
20
:And while I'm always happy to help people
think through those decisions, what I
21
:really want to do is to help them empower
them to make the decisions themself,
22
:I don't want them to need me forever.
23
:I want them to learn to trust
themselves again, because that's
24
:what dysfunction steals from us.
25
:If you grew up in a healthy home,
you probably learned that your
26
:thoughts mattered, your feelings
mattered, your opinions mattered.
27
:You were encouraged to explore who
you were and really realize who
28
:you were and embrace that self.
29
:But when you grew up in chaos, abuse,
addiction, emotional neglect, your
30
:shift, your focus shifts completely.
31
:Instead of asking
yourself, "What do I need?"
32
:you start asking, "What does
everybody else need from me?"
33
:So instead of wondering how you feel,
you're wondering how everyone else feels.
34
:You gain so many skills.
35
:And while they helped you
when you were little, they
36
:might not be serving you now.-
37
:One of the biggest things, is you became
incredibly skilled at reading a room.
38
:You can hear a sigh from across the
house and know that someone is upset.
39
:You recognize the sound of
footsteps coming down the hallway.
40
:With me, the biggest thing,
was the key in the doorknob.
41
:You know the look on someone's
face even before they say a word.
42
:You learn to anticipate
everybody's emotions because
43
:that's what helped you survive.
44
:And while, , that may have helped
you when you were a child, and it may
45
:have even protected you as a child,
it becomes exhausting as an adult.
46
:The problem is, we become so good
at listening to everyone else that
47
:we stop listening to ourselves.
48
:We literally stop trusting ourselves.
49
:I think that's why so many adult
children struggle with decision-making.
50
:We second-guess ourselves.
51
:We overthink everything.
52
:We ask five different people
for advice, hoping someone will
53
:tell us the "right answer."
54
:, We're looking everywhere but from
our own instincts and our own gut.
55
:But here's the truth, guys.
56
:Healing isn't about learning
to make perfect decisions.
57
:Healing is about trusting yourself
enough to make a decision at all,
58
:adjust if you need to, and know
that you'll be okay either way.
59
:One of my favorite moments from our
conversation with Shari was when
60
:she shared the Miles Davis quote:
"It's not the wrong note you play,
61
:it's the note you play after."
62
:God, isn't that so true?
63
:So many of us spend years obsessing
over the wrong things, the wrong
64
:relationships, the wrong career, the
wrong marriage, the wrong decision,
65
:the wrong things we said 20 years ago.
66
:But healing doesn't happen
because you finally erase that
67
:wrong note It doesn't erase it.
68
:It happens when you decide what
note you're gonna play next.
69
:So this is where your power
is, and this is where the
70
:nervous system comes into play.
71
:And you know I always bring
the nervous system into it.
72
:So if you've lived in survival mode for
many years, your nervous system is no
73
:longer asking you, "What do I want?"
74
:It's asking, "What is the safest choice?"
75
:And sometimes, now that we're an
adult, those aren't the same thing.
76
:Many times they are, but honestly,
most of the time they're not.
77
:Your body is still trying to
protect you based on experiences
78
:that happened decades ago.
79
:It doesn't always realize that
you're no longer that scared
80
:little child trying to survive.
81
:That's why rebuilding self-trust is
such an important part of healing.
82
:Not because you never make
another mistake, because you will.
83
:We all will.
84
:We are not perfect.
85
:Nobody's perfect.
86
:It's such a myth, and it
drives me absolutely crazy
87
:that we strive for perfection.
88
:But honestly, what you need to do
is believe that even if you make
89
:the wrong choice, you have the
strength to handle what comes next.
90
:That changes absolutely everything.
91
:So today I wanna leave you
with a simple challenge.
92
:Before you ask someone else
for - advice this week, I want you
93
:to pause, take a deep breath, and
ask yourself these three simple
94
:questions: "What do I really think?"
95
:"What do I really feel?"
96
:and, "What would make me
feel just 1% safer or more at
97
:peace right in this moment?"
98
:So you don't have to
have the perfect answer.
99
:You just have to start
listening to yourself.
100
:Because - every time you honor your
own voice, you're teaching your nervous
101
:system something it may have never learned
growing up, that you can trust yourself.
102
:And little by little,
that's how healing happens.
103
:Not all at once, not overnight, but
one choice, one pause, one little tiny
104
:note, as Miles Davis would've said.
105
:So thanks so much for spending
these minutes with me today.
106
:And if this message resonated with
you, I encourage you to go back
107
:and listen to the full episode with
Shari Foos on this week's episode
108
:of Adult Child of Dysfunction.
109
:It is filled with practical wisdom
about storytelling, healing,
110
:and reconnecting with the person
you were always meant to be.
111
:And if you're looking for support
on your own healing journey,
112
:I'd love to connect with you.
113
:Check out the links below for my
complimentary Clarity and Calm
114
:call, and many other resources.
115
:Reach out in whatever capacity
feels most aligned to you.
116
:Until next time, remember this, my
friends: you don't have to play every note
117
:perfectly, you just have to keep playing.
118
:So thanks so much again for joining me.
119
:I love you guys, and I
will see you back soon.
