Nathan:

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Paul. Romans 5:8. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is Day 20 of 30 Days to a Better Marriage. Love’s motivation. I’m going to do something a little devious. I’d like you to answer a single question: why do you love your spouse? What’s devious about that question, you ask? Well, it’s a trap. If you began to list all the reasons you love your spouse, you have just admitted that you misunderstand love. You see, if our reason for loving our spouse begins with, “I love you because . . .” Then in truth, our love for our spouse is simply a socially acceptable form of selfishness. We love them because they somehow fulfill a need we have or add value to us. God’s love, the love that must ground every lasting marriage, does not give a list of reasons. It’s a love that’s committed, faithful, simply because it chooses to be, no matter. This kind of love can give and care and cherish, with no return, because it’s born in the ever-giving heart of Divine love.
