Shanna Martin:

Thanks for listening to the Tech Tools for Teachers

2

:

podcast, where each week we talk about

a free piece or two of technology

3

:

that you can use in your classroom.

4

:

I'm your host, Shanna Martin.

5

:

I'm a middle school teacher and technology

instructional coach for my district.

6

:

Fuzz Martin: And I am her

producer and husband Fuzz Martin.

7

:

And I bring the beakers to

your speakers this week.

8

:

I was like, tools,

teachers, podcasts, science.

9

:

Shanna Martin: Wow.

10

:

That was special.

11

:

Fuzz Martin: Thank you.

12

:

Most of the time they are pretty special.

13

:

Shanna Martin: They are.

14

:

Oh my goodness.

15

:

So, so many things.

16

:

We're at episode 182.

17

:

The school year is like, we're there.

18

:

Yeah.

19

:

Like, we're not there.

20

:

Fuzz Martin: But we're getting there.

21

:

But we're

22

:

Shanna Martin: getting there.

23

:

Fuzz Martin: Pretty close.

24

:

Shanna Martin: Yeah.

25

:

Are

26

:

Fuzz Martin: we there yet?

27

:

I think that's more likely

the question right now.

28

:

Are we there yet?

29

:

Are

30

:

Shanna Martin: we there yet?

31

:

Are we there yet?

32

:

Are we there yet?

33

:

So many field trips happening.

34

:

There's just so many things.

35

:

So, so I, I'm saying so

like a thousand times,

36

:

Fuzz Martin: it's weird.

37

:

Shanna Martin: So there's one of our

science teachers at my school recommended

38

:

the site and use it all the time.

39

:

And I noticed it in her classroom.

40

:

And I was like, What

is that on your board?

41

:

That looks really cool.

42

:

And she's like, it's this really

cool free resource to use.

43

:

I'm like, Ooh, free resource.

44

:

Tell me more.

45

:

And so it's cool.

46

:

So the whole thing is based on the Concord

consortium is like collected all of

47

:

these cool STEM and science resources.

48

:

As a teacher, everything

is offered for free.

49

:

It's free.

50

:

It is so cool.

51

:

So you sign and you register as a

teacher and you say, I'm a teacher.

52

:

And then you just have to put in

there, where you're from, like, it'll

53

:

ask you, like what school you're from

and district and things like that.

54

:

You have to like be a part of a district

or have a connection to a school.

55

:

And then once you do, you're Everything

is available to you and you can create a,

56

:

you can create the classrooms where you'll

load your students in and then you choose

57

:

the curriculum that you want to teach.

58

:

And there's so many cool

collections and resources.

59

:

So the teacher that I work with

uses it for her genetics unit

60

:

and they have all these different

videos and interactives with kids.

61

:

And what's great is kids can work

through the different pieces.

62

:

And it tracks what they've

done and how they've answered

63

:

the questions and grades it.

64

:

So they earn like gems, and then like

this kid, if they earn like four gems,

65

:

it means that they got so many right.

66

:

So they can work independently, and

you can teach it, like it's a whole

67

:

curriculum, so you can teach it as a

teacher, and then there's all these

68

:

different supplements that go with it.

69

:

And they're all digital and the kids

just pulled up on their Chromebooks.

70

:

So you can do like the video in class

together and have the discussion and

71

:

go through the directions, like we're

going through our stuff on their own.

72

:

Fuzz Martin: It's gamified,

which just makes it, it's just,

73

:

Shanna Martin: it's so cool.

74

:

So, and it, there's just so many

topics from boreal forest fires

75

:

to, like earth science resources to

evolution, to genetics, to hurricanes,

76

:

to, you know, To precipitation

to, I can't even the tech rocks.

77

:

They talk about like the rocks

and waters and, wildfire impacts.

78

:

So you can choose like a collection.

79

:

So I just picked wildfire risk and impact.

80

:

It'll tell you like, you can

choose the five, eight, or it goes

81

:

from like five, eight, nine, 12,

choose the unit lasts about a week.

82

:

Then you can run the teacher edition,

which will show you like all the different

83

:

pieces that the teacher is available.

84

:

So as a teacher, I can pull up the

lesson, like feeling hot, hot, hot.

85

:

There's an introduction that goes with it.

86

:

There's like slides and

information that goes with it.

87

:

There's an activity that goes with

it and video that you show the

88

:

kids gives teacher tips in there.

89

:

It'll say like, watch the video, it'll

give you the questions, and then gives

90

:

you an exemplar, so you can see like,

this is what we're looking for when

91

:

the kids are answering questions.

92

:

And as a teacher, you can use

all of it, or you can use pieces

93

:

of it, and you can apply what's

appropriate for your students.

94

:

This thing goes to like the his

wildfire history in the United States.

95

:

Again, there's questions that prompt it.

96

:

There's then, the images that

go with it, with the slides.

97

:

Like there's just so many different pieces

that you can, again, pick and choose

98

:

what you want to show in your classroom.

99

:

Then there's an activity that

you can share with your students.

100

:

And then you get a summary of the week.

101

:

So like, these are all

the different pieces.

102

:

These are all the different questions.

103

:

This is what kids have worked through.

104

:

This is what's happening.

105

:

There's just.

106

:

So much that it offers,

you can choose that.

107

:

And there's like a classroom dashboard.

108

:

So you can keep track of like, who's

doing what and what's happening.

109

:

And there's just so many different ways

that you can build these pieces into the

110

:

classroom based on these cool, like very

relevant science topics, which is awesome.

111

:

They also have.

112

:

Different guides to help you out.

113

:

So it's like additional information

and then they have modules so you

114

:

can, like, there's a pre test and

there's a post test and you can assign

115

:

or you can see the teacher edition.

116

:

You can print it.

117

:

There's just, oh, like unit after

unit created for you as a teacher with

118

:

all kinds of really cool resources.

119

:

And options for students to have access

to, and as a teacher to build it from.

120

:

Yeah, it's really cool.

121

:

Fuzz Martin: Good, cool.

122

:

Shanna Martin: You're like, okay.

123

:

Fuzz Martin: I can't see most of it.

124

:

Shanna Martin: I know.

125

:

Because you have to be a teacher to be

as cool as all the other teachers are.

126

:

So for an example, like if I am

in the middle of, Earth and space.

127

:

You can also search by activity.

128

:

So you can do like an air pollution model.

129

:

You can do seismic hazards, risk.

130

:

You can do assessing volcanic hazards.

131

:

You can do, how do we

feed a growing population?

132

:

And then again, it'll give you

the assignments to go with it.

133

:

So like you can choose by collection,

you can choose by topic you can choose

134

:

by all of these different things.

135

:

And it's just a really

cool resource for teachers

136

:

Fuzz Martin: and it's free

137

:

Shanna Martin: and it's free

like everything is free about it.

138

:

Fuzz Martin: That's great.

139

:

Shanna Martin: Yeah,

140

:

Fuzz Martin: How do they

make this all so free?

141

:

Shanna Martin: It's a great

question They love teachers.

142

:

Obviously.

143

:

Yeah, I should point out the website.

144

:

It is a learn le ar n.

145

:

con cord C o n c o r d that or G So learn.

146

:

concord.

147

:

org.

148

:

Fuzz Martin: So, Concord is

a non profit organization.

149

:

They're based in Concord, Massachusetts.

150

:

Hence, Concord.

151

:

Shanna Martin: I wonder

if they have grapes.

152

:

Fuzz Martin: I wonder if they have grapes.

153

:

If you tuned in to the last episode,

you'd know that grapes are a fruit.

154

:

But their, their work is to help bring

technology, into reality for education

155

:

in science, math, and engineering.

156

:

And so I'm guessing that all these,

this is just, is a part of their

157

:

mission is providing this kind of

content to help support STEM education.

158

:

Shanna Martin: Right.

159

:

And it's awesome.

160

:

Like, it's just not one or two resources.

161

:

It is a ginormous collection and super

helpful for teachers across the board,

162

:

with all kinds of supports, put it in

resources and questions and again, just

163

:

an amazing amount of information for

teachers to use and share as they need to.

164

:

So it's very cool.

165

:

And I'm so glad that she pointed

out to me because, cause it's all

166

:

aligned with NGSS, which is always

the biggest piece too, which is the

167

:

science standards and the practices.

168

:

And it's all aligned.

169

:

So you know exactly what standards

would go with what lesson

170

:

and how to find all that too.

171

:

So I'm so glad.

172

:

That it was shared with me

because it's a very cool resource

173

:

and very helpful for many.

174

:

So you should check it out,

whether you're a science teacher,

175

:

math teacher, STEM teacher.

176

:

I think that there's a ton of

resources for so many people out there.

177

:

Fuzz Martin: Very good.

178

:

Learn.

179

:

concord.

180

:

181

:

Shanna Martin: Yes.

182

:

So cool.

183

:

Yeah, I love a good resource.

184

:

Fuzz Martin: There we go.
