Transcripts

Simone Cunningham:

I'm Simone Cunningham, and this is the

2

:

Monarchist Basketball Show.

3

:

Mike Langston: The following

presentation is brought to you by

4

:

The Pride of ODU, the official NIL

collective of All Dominion Athletics.

5

:

Be a Monarchist.

6

:

Join The Pride.

7

:

Hey Kelsey, thank you for joining us.

8

:

Uh, great to sit down and chat.

9

:

Kelsey Thompson: No problem.

10

:

Mike Langston: How, how is this

season going for you so far?

11

:

Kelsey Thompson: It's going good.

12

:

I'm still finding the rhythm within this

system and with the team, but It's a

13

:

challenge that I look up to and And I

know this system is a pro like system.

14

:

So I know when I can be able

to feel comfortable in it.

15

:

They don't Mock at my game as a pro,

but other than that, it's been good.

16

:

I have built relationships with

my Teammates and the coaching

17

:

staff and people here at ODU.

18

:

Aaron Zielinski: You started your

career at a conference, South Alabama.

19

:

Contributing from day one, you

started 30 games as a freshman.

20

:

That's not common at all.

21

:

How did your experiences at South Alabama

prepare you for success at Old Dominion?

22

:

Kelsey Thompson: The word that you say,

experience, it took me a while to realize,

23

:

it took me to this year to realize that.

24

:

I played 30 games as a freshman

and I thought it was normal

25

:

then because I was doing it.

26

:

But to think about it, most freshmen

don't get the opportunity that I got.

27

:

So here at ODU, when I came in, I was

just already ready set to go because

28

:

I have two years of experience.

29

:

But if you look at it, it's like more

experience than people get in four years.

30

:

So it just made me already comfortable

and I already know what goals I can set

31

:

coming in and just meeting them standards.

32

:

Mike Langston: All right, so you won

freshman player of the year in the Sun

33

:

Belt and then you entered the portal

What other opportunities did you have?

34

:

Along with Old Dominion

when you were in the portal

35

:

Kelsey Thompson: Well after the

freshman of the year when I went

36

:

through a coaching change I had a lot

of opportunities going through that

37

:

coaching change like a lot coming out

there freshman of the year award Which

38

:

is a big award that suits you like, okay.

39

:

I had a lot of eyes on me.

40

:

I had Oregon Um, all the local, um,

south southern schools and then get

41

:

into the finally get into the port of

my sophomore year, I had pretty much

42

:

every top contender in the Sun Belt,

um, Tennessee schools, Florida schools,

43

:

just a lot down there in the south, but

I just wanted to get out of the area,

44

:

um, a chance to grow in a different

environment and different competition.

45

:

I think this is my first time

coming up here playing all these

46

:

different schools like Howard school.

47

:

It's just like it's a different

level of competition up here and

48

:

different playing styles as I'm

used to down there in the South.

49

:

I mean, we play local schools in, you

know, Louisiana and maybe Tennessee and

50

:

we all have the same like playing style.

51

:

So when I got up here, it's different.

52

:

The cutting game action,

the The big HBCUs, then you

53

:

have the big, the Richmonds.

54

:

It's like the play

style up here and stuff.

55

:

That's what sets it apart from all

the different opportunities that

56

:

I had when I got into the portal.

57

:

Aaron Zielinski: Alright, so this

team's got a lot of new faces.

58

:

You being one of them.

59

:

Apart from Hoops, what should

Old Dominion fans know about you?

60

:

Kelsey Thompson: Um.

61

:

I'm very laid back.

62

:

I'm to myself, but I like,

I like doing new things.

63

:

It's just I do new things

as it approaches me.

64

:

So I just don't think people know

that when you see me on the court, you

65

:

probably think like, Oh, she's very

outgoing, like outside of basketball.

66

:

But I think like outside, outside, I'm

very like to myself and very passive.

67

:

But on the court, like I'm just very

competitive, energy going, driven.

68

:

Mike Langston: All right.

69

:

So every team has a different identity.

70

:

, what would you describe this year's

women's basketball team's identity as

71

:

Kelsey Thompson: competitive over my three

years of college basketball, this is the

72

:

most competitive team I have ever been on.

73

:

And I think one thing that's make

a team competitive is our talent

74

:

level like is at an all time high.

75

:

We have 14 people that can

score in 14 different ways.

76

:

As you can see, I think

we're 12, 11, 12 games in.

77

:

It's been a start.

78

:

Different starting lineup every game.

79

:

It just goes to show, like,

the talent level is high.

80

:

When a high talent level,

the competitiveness is crazy.

81

:

There's no day that you can come into

practice thinking that you can feel

82

:

comfortable when the next man next to

you have a higher standard than yours.

83

:

So it's very competitive

in this atmosphere.

84

:

Aaron Zielinski: So you've got

experience playing at South Alabama.

85

:

A lot of experience in

those first two years.

86

:

What's the biggest difference you've

noticed playing for this coaching

87

:

staff and you had previously?

88

:

Kelsey Thompson: I mean,

it's in a good way.

89

:

It's like I'm doing

less, but I'm doing more.

90

:

So in within them two years

at South, I was doing a lot.

91

:

Every rep was coming to me.

92

:

I think shooting 20 to 25

shots a game, moving on ball,

93

:

off ball, just moving around.

94

:

I was doing a lot within rep.

95

:

Within playing within

position within minutes.

96

:

I play a extremely high level of minutes.

97

:

Just I was doing a lot and here I think

I can finally be comfortable in a role.

98

:

I think I, I have been strictly

off ball and I can get on ball if I

99

:

want to, but it, it has allowed me

to be comfortable within my game.

100

:

I think at South, I was in a position of

where we lost the point guard my freshman

101

:

year to injury, and then my second year.

102

:

It was a struggle trying to find

somebody to play point guard.

103

:

Because so I have bounced

around in positions in here.

104

:

I just feel like, uh, I found my

free area of playing off wing and

105

:

now I can move to point guard move

to the four without having it being

106

:

forced within their game plan.

107

:

And I think that has helped

me a lot to now finally in my

108

:

natural stand of scoring a ball.

109

:

Um, picking up on my defense, being a

leader off ball, not necessarily always

110

:

having the ball in my hand, in my hand.

111

:

So it's just like, nine of them

catch and shoot opportunities there

112

:

for me, um, just reading closeouts.

113

:

That, that's been the best thing here

for me is I can finally play my role

114

:

instead of, you know, on when you

attempt to play on a team like how

115

:

I was, everything was coming to me.

116

:

And to some people that's good, but

that, that can wear your body down.

117

:

I was going to a conference.

118

:

Two years ago from today,

like, I already drained from

119

:

playing high level management.

120

:

I think here I can afford to

catch a break because of the

121

:

amount of talent that I'm around.

122

:

Mike Langston: Alright, so before we

started today, we were talking to Coach D.

123

:

We asked her, was there one thing you

wanted to hear from the players today?

124

:

And she said, I want to hear

their best impression of me.

125

:

So, what's your best

impression of Coach D?

126

:

I

127

:

Aaron Zielinski: promise you

this is not a trick question.

128

:

She really did say it.

129

:

Kelsey Thompson: What she be doing?

130

:

Every time she see me, she do this.

131

:

Hey, Kelsey.

132

:

I say, Hey, Coach D.

133

:

Hey, Kelsey.

134

:

Just to get me smiling.

135

:

That's the best one I got.

136

:

Aaron Zielinski: All right.

137

:

Tell us something about one of your

teammates that most fans wouldn't know.

138

:

Kelsey Thompson: Uh, Jadyn is so silly.

139

:

Jadyn dances, joke and play around

all day, like showing all her teeth.

140

:

Like, Jadyn is the most, like, outgoing,

silliest person I have ever met.

141

:

Like, it's so un serious.

142

:

Mike Langston: Alright, um, so the next

few are going to be just fun questions.

143

:

Don't think too much about it.

144

:

Uh, we'll keep it running.

145

:

Favorite pre game meal?

146

:

Kelsey Thompson: salmon

and mashed potatoes.

147

:

Aaron Zielinski: All right.

148

:

What's that favorite pre-game

song you've gotta listen to?

149

:

Kelsey Thompson: Dang.

150

:

Um, right now I think it's Heart

of a Woman by Summer Walker.

151

:

Mike Langston: Alright, favorite

basketball player and why?

152

:

Kelsey Thompson: LeBron James.

153

:

'cause he's a leader on and off the court.

154

:

Aaron Zielinski: Favorite

thing to do in your free time?

155

:

Kelsey Thompson: Build Legos.

156

:

Mike Langston: Alright.

157

:

Do you have a favorite musician?

158

:

Or, or band?

159

:

Kelsey Thompson: I like Rylo

Rodriguez 'cause he from Mobile.

160

:

Aaron Zielinski: All right.

161

:

If you weren't playing basketball

for your current team, which

162

:

ODU team would you play on?

163

:

Kelsey Thompson: I

gotta stay on my gender.

164

:

No.

165

:

Or can I?

166

:

Aaron Zielinski: You can

play whatever team you want.

167

:

Kelsey Thompson: I wanna be the

quarterback for the football team.

168

:

.

Aaron Zielinski: Colton better watch out.

169

:

Mike Langston: That's cool.

170

:

Uh, you play a lot.

171

:

You play a lot of.

172

:

Backyard football growing up?

173

:

Kelsey Thompson: Yeah,

I was outside a lot.

174

:

Everything.

175

:

Mike Langston: Alright, so.

176

:

In basketball, there's a lot

of ways to get to the bucket.

177

:

What is your favorite move

to pull off in the game?

178

:

Kelsey Thompson: Probably

the spin move into my jumper.

179

:

Aaron Zielinski: Alright,

life after hoops.

180

:

What are you majoring in, and

where do you see yourself after

181

:

you stop playing basketball?

182

:

Kelsey Thompson: I'm majoring in sports

management, and After basketball,

183

:

so that means after I'm done playing

professionally, after that, um, I

184

:

want to be a grad assistant, and

then I want to go into coaching,

185

:

you know, on a college level.

186

:

Mike Langston: Very cool.

187

:

Um, so, what is your top personal

goal this season, and what is your

188

:

goal for the team this year, and

what will it take to get there?

189

:

Kelsey Thompson: Uh,

I'll start with the team.

190

:

Definitely a championship.

191

:

I think that's the main thing.

192

:

That's it.

193

:

A championship.

194

:

Whether it come ugly or good.

195

:

An ugly win or a great win.

196

:

A championship just at the end goal.

197

:

Cause the championship will erase it.

198

:

How everything happened.

199

:

That's it.

200

:

Um, personally,

201

:

Um, of course I want to finish

what I left off of, um, being

202

:

picked preseason Sun Belt.

203

:

So I just want to, um, I mean,

it's not a crazy goal to me.

204

:

If it come, it come.

205

:

I'ma do my job on the team, but that's

something I do want to A conference

206

:

just to say I did it and represent

ODU because I feel like we got a few

207

:

players that can be on that preseason

and towards the end, and player of the

208

:

year, defensive player of the year.

209

:

I feel like we got all them

categories right here on this team.

210

:

So I want to be the one to stamp

my name on it for this university.

211

:

Aaron Zielinski: Alright, we're fortunate

to do these sorts of fun interviews.

212

:

Um, we, we collaborate.

213

:

We're part of The Pride of

ODU, supported by the fans.

214

:

What's your message for Monarch

Nation and how they're supportive?

215

:

Kelsey Thompson: Um, Monarch Nation,

I really appreciate y'all and just the

216

:

environment y'all create at the games.

217

:

It's really like, to me personally,

coming from where I'm coming from and

218

:

seeing the game of women's basketball

evolve, it really set a special place in

219

:

my heart every time I play in Chartway.

220

:

Just coming out there, seeing y'all

be engaged on and off the court.

221

:

I can literally be in the

store and somebody see I have

222

:

on ODU and approaching me.

223

:

Y'all seen this.

224

:

It makes me feel like I'm valued here at

my university and within the community.

225

:

So I just thank y'all for always

doing it and continue doing it.

226

:

Aaron Zielinski: Thanks

for coming on, Kelsey.

227

:

Go Monarchs.

228

:

Kelsey Thompson: No problem.

229

:

Go Monarchs.
