"Fake it till you make it" has always bothered me — not because the sentiment behind it is wrong, but because the framing removes power from the person saying it. It positions your current knowledge as a performance you're hoping no one notices, rather than a genuine stage of expertise that has real value for the people who are one step behind where you are now.

This episode started as a memory — something my guest Denise Duffield-Thomas said in our season four conversation that I kept coming back to while thinking about content creation, expert positioning, and the particular exhaustion that comes from feeling like you always need to know more before you publish. I'm playing a short clip from that interview, and then unpacking what it means for how you think about your podcast catalog, your current level of knowledge, and the question of what actually makes a podcast episode worth publishing.

Something I come back to often in my work with podcasters is the gap between what they know and what they believe they're allowed to say. The knowledge is there — compounding with every episode published, every client conversation, every industry shift they've tracked and responded to. What holds them back isn't expertise, but the story they're telling themselves about whether that expertise is enough yet.
