Speaker:

Hello and welcome to Overtime Hockey Talk.

Speaker:

My name is Mark Paul.

Speaker:

My co host is Justin Baker.

Speaker:

Justin, the biggest trade of the year just went down.

Speaker:

Maybe the biggest trade of the last,

Speaker:

maybe?

Speaker:

very well could be very well.

Speaker:

It could be, Miko Rantanen sent.

Speaker:

To the Carolina hurricanes in a three way deal with the Chicago Blackhawks,

Speaker:

which I feel like the Blackhawks were just a little sliver of this trade.

Speaker:

In the end, Colorado gets Martin Nietzsche's Jack Drury, a 2025 second

Speaker:

round pick a 2026 fourth round pick from Carolina and, Nils Juntorp, who

Speaker:

was a part of the trade for Taylor Hall.

Speaker:

And make a rant and go to Carolina and really the Blackhawks just end

Speaker:

up with a third round pick in 2025.

Speaker:

That's all they got.

Speaker:

I thought that was strange because they held half of Miko Ranton's contract,

Speaker:

Bit of money to just get a third

Speaker:

8 million bucks.

Speaker:

So it's like 4 million that they're holding.

Speaker:

It wasn't too long ago that I remember the Maple Leafs trading

Speaker:

Patrick Marlowe to the hurricanes in exchange for a first round pick.

Speaker:

Just to have them buy him out.

Speaker:

And I think that was a 5 million deal.

Speaker:

So it seems like 4 million bucks for only a third round pick.

Speaker:

I think you probably could have leaned on them for a little more there,

Speaker:

don't forget that third rounder is also not only just for money, but it's for

Speaker:

Taylor Hall too, a former Hart Trophy guy.

Speaker:

Which,

Speaker:

got?

Speaker:

so $6 million.

Speaker:

That's off your books too.

Speaker:

It's almost like they didn't lose a whole lot there.

Speaker:

They've got $2 million extra to play with.

Speaker:

Maybe their plan is to do this again, kind of frees 'em up to do it again.

Speaker:

But you'd think that they could get more than the third round pick

Speaker:

for Taylor Hall and $4 million that they're just paying out

Speaker:

right.

Speaker:

and that third round pick, I think the chances of a third round pick

Speaker:

becoming a regular NHL, like 15%, that's a lot to pay for a 15% chance.

Speaker:

A little bit.

Speaker:

and we're talking low, that's going to be a low third round pick too.

Speaker:

There's going to be two good teams.

Speaker:

but, yes, your thoughts, let's just, from the Carolina standpoint,

Speaker:

because they are the team that gets the best player, how do you feel

Speaker:

about this trade for the hurricanes?

Speaker:

Yeah, if I'm the Hurricanes, fan base, I'm loving this deal, you rewind the

Speaker:

clocks a little bit, Martinitius, Natius, whatever, he's going by these days.

Speaker:

he clearly didn't want to be there.

Speaker:

the rumors, We don't know, how true they were, but I'm always of the mindset of

Speaker:

where there's smoke, there's fire, right?

Speaker:

So, you know, wanted out, requested a trade, I think it was last off season.

Speaker:

this feels like it's been coming for a little bit.

Speaker:

Cause he's, in the first year of a two year deal.

Speaker:

He signed in the off season, but it was kind of contentious.

Speaker:

Contentious is a good word for it.

Speaker:

And there's purpose behind a two year deal, right?

Speaker:

Because a guy like that, you could think, Oh, I'll just sign

Speaker:

a one year deal, try to request a trade again and see what happens.

Speaker:

But, clearly Carolina was of the mindset, Hey, we're not trading you.

Speaker:

You're still a valuable piece.

Speaker:

We believe in you, but he didn't want to be there.

Speaker:

Who knows why?

Speaker:

maybe he wanted more money.

Speaker:

Maybe he felt that he was worth a little bit more and they just

Speaker:

weren't willing to pay that.

Speaker:

we've known for a long time, Carolina has been, a team that

Speaker:

has been a little bit tighter when it comes to the purse strings.

Speaker:

this two year contract, walks him into free agency.

Speaker:

that was the whole point of signing that two year deal.

Speaker:

So he could become a UFA at 27, 28 years old, and go sign

Speaker:

wherever he wants for seven years.

Speaker:

Carolina knew they were going to lose him.

Speaker:

Let's go out and get the best player available.

Speaker:

how often do you see a hundred point guy?

Speaker:

Go anywhere.

Speaker:

the only way is if Mitch Marner gets dealt, that would be the only comp

Speaker:

that is a possibility to get dealt.

Speaker:

But I think that one's very unlikely.

Speaker:

Toronto would rather just hold on to him.

Speaker:

And see how it goes.

Speaker:

Colorado didn't want to go through that.

Speaker:

They didn't want to lose him for nothing.

Speaker:

I have to applaud it.

Speaker:

they got something out of him, but we'll see how this whole thing plays out

Speaker:

because this is going to be one of those trades where you've got to wait 2 or

Speaker:

3 years to really see how it pans out.

Speaker:

does Miko Rantanen even re sign in Carolina?

Speaker:

I would doubt it

Speaker:

I'm 50 50 right now as we speak

Speaker:

Colorado did offer 11.

Speaker:

75 million over eight years to random.

Speaker:

And if you think that the Carolina hurricanes, the team that they wouldn't

Speaker:

pay Gensel after him coming in and fitting really well, they don't go and

Speaker:

sign Gensel to a cheaper deal than that.

Speaker:

I would put Rantan in the next tier up from Gensel.

Speaker:

but it's not like he's 50 percent better than Gensel.

Speaker:

we're talking 10%, 12 percent better.

Speaker:

he maybe carries a line a little more than Gensel does, but if they weren't

Speaker:

willing to pay Gensel, are they going to be willing to pay Rantan?

Speaker:

are you willing to build your whole team around him?

Speaker:

Because you're going to have to pay him 13 million.

Speaker:

Yeah, the rumor is he wanted, money, which he wasn't go a center.

Speaker:

he's not th guy caliber.

Speaker:

I don't think of that elite status.

Speaker:

Sam I would put him a tier ab

Speaker:

Well, we're going to find out now that he's gone from, McKinnon's wing.

Speaker:

We're gonna see how much you know, for me, from what I've heard, just reading

Speaker:

the Twitter verse, whatever you want to call it, the rumor is that he's

Speaker:

looking for kind of that same percentage of cap it that David Poster not got.

Speaker:

So he's not looking to break the bank.

Speaker:

And if you look at it next year, the calculations that they're

Speaker:

thinking, the cap's going to go to, it's going to be about 13.

Speaker:

1 million dollars is what he's looking for.

Speaker:

That's what he's going to get,

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And that's not extreme and it's not out of the realm of possibilities

Speaker:

for a guy who can put up, 40, 50 goals and a hundred points.

Speaker:

that's not crazy.

Speaker:

he wasn't getting more than McKinnon.

Speaker:

no, not in Colorado.

Speaker:

they weren't willing to do that.

Speaker:

he did come out and say, there was a talk with a Finnish newspaper where he said,

Speaker:

he wasn't looking for dry sidle money, but he wasn't going to break the bank

Speaker:

on Colorado, still, I think he wanted that 13 million bucks and, he wanted to

Speaker:

become the highest paid winger, which.

Speaker:

Is appropriate.

Speaker:

time and place, right?

Speaker:

Your contracts up.

Speaker:

you're the best winger to become a UFA since Panarin.

Speaker:

for Carolina.

Speaker:

they got to like go deep.

Speaker:

They got to go to the finals at least here.

Speaker:

Or, or I mean, this is kind of has felt the last few years.

Speaker:

It's been, well, let's go out, let's make a big splash.

Speaker:

Let's bring in somebody.

Speaker:

Let's bring in again.

Speaker:

So let's see what happens in the platform.

Speaker:

It seems like every year.

Speaker:

It's the same story went around and don't score enough

Speaker:

goals and that's why you lose.

Speaker:

So they've been trying to go out and get goal scores and it still hasn't worked.

Speaker:

And it's like, you got to pay somebody, it might as well be ranting.

Speaker:

And I, you know, I'm sure if you're in Carolina, you're hoping

Speaker:

that he likes it there enough.

Speaker:

It's a little warmer than Colorado, I guess, in the winter.

Speaker:

it's probably pretty similar climate, other than it being.

Speaker:

Lower and elevation,

Speaker:

Now you gotta deal with hurricanes so there goes, yeah,

Speaker:

that was a fluky one.

Speaker:

It's not that often that there's a actual hurricane and Carol, even

Speaker:

though they are the hurricanes,

Speaker:

they got themselves the best player available when you looked at possible

Speaker:

people hitting the trade market.

Speaker:

I love this edition.

Speaker:

I think it's gonna work out better than Genzel, but I do think you're right.

Speaker:

they do struggle to score goals even though they are fifth in

Speaker:

the NHL and goals four per game.

Speaker:

But to me, I, I don't think this team is done.

Speaker:

they still have their first round draft pick.

Speaker:

I think they're gonna go out and target a center because really,

Speaker:

Jordan, Stahl, Koch, and Emmy.

Speaker:

These are not guys that I want to go in the playoffs with

Speaker:

and try to win the cup with.

Speaker:

They're guys better suited for the third and fourth line.

Speaker:

I love Jordan Stahl's leadership, but no offense to him.

Speaker:

He's not going to fill in on the second line.

Speaker:

Koke and Niemi to me is just not going to do it for them.

Speaker:

when you have to pair them up against other teams, you're probably going

Speaker:

to end up facing like Toronto,

Speaker:

If you've got to go face John Tavares and Austin Matthews, I'm not throwing

Speaker:

Sebastian Aho and, Koke and Niemi against that you're going to lose every time,

Speaker:

yeah.

Speaker:

the issue to me is you go and give up Nietzsche's for Rantan.

Speaker:

yes, this is a good move because Nietzsche's didn't want to be there.

Speaker:

now you can get a guy who maybe you can convince to say there,

Speaker:

if that's in the plans, and.

Speaker:

You, you also go grab Taylor hall.

Speaker:

this is not a team that's looking ahead very far.

Speaker:

Like we're looking at like, let's win the Stanley cup now let's go and make it

Speaker:

happen when that, when everything's on the line with these deals, it isn't very

Speaker:

often that they work out in your favor.

Speaker:

Cause only one team wins the Stanley cup.

Speaker:

Like we only look back at one team and go, that trade was worth

Speaker:

it, giving up a lot of futures.

Speaker:

And like Nietzsche's to me, isn't now Rantan and certainly is in a different

Speaker:

area of elite when it comes to like between Nietzsche's and random, but it's

Speaker:

not like Nietzsche's as a bad player.

Speaker:

I mean, he's basically a point per game guy for Carolina and you're replacing

Speaker:

them with someone who is, you know, Slightly more than a point per game guy.

Speaker:

You lost a lot in this deal.

Speaker:

I don't know that the hurricanes are so much better at the end of the day.

Speaker:

The only thing I could say is, Hey, Brandon's want to stay on the cup.

Speaker:

And that is, that's nothing to bat your eyes at.

Speaker:

Brandon's won a cup.

Speaker:

They also lost Drury who I know he's not, you know, he's not putting up

Speaker:

huge points, but that is a depth piece.

Speaker:

So now you're going to be looking for another depth piece

Speaker:

to come in and replace that.

Speaker:

Sort of, I guess that's Taylor Hall, which over under how

Speaker:

many games is Taylor Hall play?

Speaker:

By the end of the year, like what are the chances of him getting hurt

Speaker:

and missing the rest of the year?

Speaker:

I'd give it a solid 25 games.

Speaker:

I don't know that I love the trade.

Speaker:

if I'm playing NHL and I'm only playing this for one season, I don't care.

Speaker:

I just want the best players.

Speaker:

Well then heck yeah.

Speaker:

But if Carolina doesn't win the cup, it's a pretty easy check Mark

Speaker:

in Colorado's camp because they get knee just for another year.

Speaker:

They also got draft picks.

Speaker:

if they win the cup, then okay, I'll come back here and eat my words because

Speaker:

it obviously was a great trade, but if they don't win the cup, then all of this

Speaker:

was kind of for not, or they go and they re sign Rand, which I will be shocked.

Speaker:

I'll be floored if the Carolina hurricanes actually pay him money.

Speaker:

I'm not resigning him, right now I'd give it 50 50.

Speaker:

It's just a coin flip at this point.

Speaker:

there is that connection with Sebastian.

Speaker:

I think that's what they're banking on, you want to play with one

Speaker:

of the best Finns in the world.

Speaker:

hopefully, those two can have some chemistry.

Speaker:

That's why they, brought him in.

Speaker:

History has shown that Carolina doesn't like to pay for guys

Speaker:

like this, especially wingers.

Speaker:

And, and to me, again, I think they're still gonna, there's another

Speaker:

move to be made, whether or not they bring in a guy like maybe Kirby

Speaker:

Doc to play second line center.

Speaker:

They have to do something because I'm not betting my future on

Speaker:

Cook and Niemi to win them a cup.

Speaker:

So, you know, and let's not forget too, right?

Speaker:

I mean, yes, you know, their, their, their record speaks for themselves.

Speaker:

They're playing very good hockey and you can never count Rod Bredemore's

Speaker:

teams out, but I don't trust, Freddie Anderson to stay healthy.

Speaker:

And, Peter Kochankoff, I don't know what you're going to get

Speaker:

out of him in the playoffs.

Speaker:

this defense is substantially weaker than it was last year in the playoffs.

Speaker:

And look how that panned out.

Speaker:

they've got Orlov, Slavin, Burns, Walker, and Gossespierre.

Speaker:

They have a good five

Speaker:

It's good enough to win.

Speaker:

Absolutely.

Speaker:

It's good.

Speaker:

I don't think that's their weakness by any means.

Speaker:

with Rantanen,

Speaker:

I hope that it's worth it.

Speaker:

I hope they re sign him because I look at that fit.

Speaker:

eventually you're going to have to sign somebody they're a numbers team.

Speaker:

So they look at the, they've looked at other players who've

Speaker:

come around and they go, this guy's not worth paying top dollar for.

Speaker:

Maybe they look at him and say, Miko Rantanen is one of

Speaker:

the best wingers in the NHL.

Speaker:

We are willing to pony up for him because.

Speaker:

He is worth that money.

Speaker:

He's actually worth more than that money.

Speaker:

And I think that's what they try to do a smart team looks at a player and

Speaker:

they go, well, you are overvalued.

Speaker:

We don't want you.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

you don't want to have a team full of overvalued overpaid players.

Speaker:

You have to have a team of undervalued and underpaid players.

Speaker:

That's

Speaker:

That's theoretically how you win with lots of depth is you

Speaker:

have a team that's underpaid.

Speaker:

how Chicago did it.

Speaker:

That is how Chicago did it.

Speaker:

It's true.

Speaker:

The incredible drafts from Stan Bowman.

Speaker:

there's nothing in their past that indicates that they even have the ability

Speaker:

to go out and sign a guy like Brandon,

Speaker:

And how funny would of this hoopla, right?

Speaker:

Th send niches who's on for Rand and still ends up re in the offseason just goe I

Speaker:

I don't think that's going to happen.

Speaker:

don't think so

Speaker:

I would put that at the, 1%, but here's what I think happens in Carolina,

Speaker:

especially a guy who, so Gensel, he comes from Pittsburgh, Branton, and

Speaker:

he's coming from Colorado to much like very established franchises, they're.

Speaker:

They're bigger in their community.

Speaker:

Like the Carolina hurricanes are about their, their last plate.

Speaker:

Like they're behind NASCAR.

Speaker:

They're behind any college football, pro football.

Speaker:

They, they are at the back of the line when it comes to local sports.

Speaker:

it's not a knock on them.

Speaker:

it's more of a culture thing, but it just is the location that they're at.

Speaker:

I think some of these guys go there and they go, Oh, this is great.

Speaker:

I don't get recognized.

Speaker:

I think other guys go there and they go, like this feels like.

Speaker:

I'm a second class citizen in the sports world.

Speaker:

And they end up going somewhere else, like Tampa Bay, you go to Tampa Bay,

Speaker:

you're in the light with the lightning.

Speaker:

Yes, there's the bucks, but hockey's very popular there.

Speaker:

when you go to that rink, You don't feel like a second class

Speaker:

that team's got a lot of money.

Speaker:

Poured into it.

Speaker:

So I wonder if that's what happens in Carolina too, is that like, yeah, they

Speaker:

won't pony up for money, but also it's not the same vibe as you could get.

Speaker:

if you go and sign in Tampa or Colorado, or you were to go and sign any number

Speaker:

of teams where there's just a little bit more of an established fan base

Speaker:

and which, which could also be the reason why they don't want to overpay

Speaker:

for players as money is a little tight.

Speaker:

I don't think you own the Carolina hurricanes to go and make tons of money.

Speaker:

I think you have tons of money and you're like, I want to own a franchise.

Speaker:

let's talk about this deal from Chicago's standpoint, losing Taylor

Speaker:

hall, which is really all that happened I think Connor Bedard was a little

Speaker:

upset that he loses daddy hall.

Speaker:

How do you, when you look at hall and what he brought to Chicago, are you?

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

With this move, or would you have preferred, like, if you're a Chicago

Speaker:

fan to just go, if this is all we were going to get for Taylor

Speaker:

hall, why don't we just keep them?

Speaker:

I'm kind of in I think, you know, I'm al too, where like you're go through

Speaker:

a rebuild and no How much you, you place value in, younger players, draft

Speaker:

picks, prospects over, veteran talent.

Speaker:

You still need some of that veteran talent right?

Speaker:

You still need guys who have been there, guys who have that experience

Speaker:

and IQ to teach those younger guys.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And I know Nick Foligno signed for another year and they brought in Tyler Bertuzzi.

Speaker:

if you're mentoring a guy like Conor Bedard, I think Taylor Hall

Speaker:

is a great piece to have there.

Speaker:

I know he was vocal in saying that he wanted to stay there.

Speaker:

He wanted to see the rebuild through.

Speaker:

And I think honestly, if you're Chicago, that's the type of guys.

Speaker:

You want there, right?

Speaker:

I mean, you want guys that want to be there, especially when it

Speaker:

is going to be difficult for a couple more seasons, in Chicago.

Speaker:

And maybe this is the case where he goes back.

Speaker:

maybe it is,

Speaker:

go back.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Maybe they went to him and said, you know what?

Speaker:

Hey, we're still interested in resigning you, but I think we need

Speaker:

to get something out of you so we can continue this rebuild and expedite it.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Attempt to win

Speaker:

yeah, and maybe that was it.

Speaker:

Maybe it was a favor to him.

Speaker:

for saying that.

Speaker:

But, you know, for me, I thought they would've got more out of a guy like

Speaker:

Taylor Hall because you look at what he's done in the past, he's still a

Speaker:

great hockey mind and I think, staying healthy, he can still be a middle six guy

Speaker:

earn pick just for Hall.

Speaker:

Right,

Speaker:

I'd be willing to dish a third round pick for Taylor Hall.

Speaker:

And so then you're telling me that you also have to hold 4

Speaker:

million from someone else should have been two third round pick.

Speaker:

It just, it didn't make much sense to me.

Speaker:

The only thing I can think of is someone owed somebody a favor and maybe it'll

Speaker:

come back to them in a different way.

Speaker:

maybe this is future considerations without future considerations.

Speaker:

Yeah, that does

Speaker:

don't see those too often anymore, the future considerations trades.

Speaker:

very

Speaker:

It used to happen a lot more, it would always be like, Oh, we're

Speaker:

trading them for a third and a fifth round pick and future considerations.

Speaker:

And you're like, one of those, who's blowing who?

Speaker:

somebody was, traded for future considerations and then given

Speaker:

back and they said that that was the future consideration.

Speaker:

I think it happened in the 70s or the 80s.

Speaker:

Kaz can say, I don't think that's been recent.

Speaker:

No, no, it was the 70s or 80s.

Speaker:

I can't remember the name, but it was, yeah, it was like Hey, we'll trade you

Speaker:

with this guy for future considerations.

Speaker:

And they went, tell you what, the future considerations are us giving

Speaker:

us the, you get this guy back.

Speaker:

He must've been beloved.

Speaker:

all right, biggest trade of the year, biggest trade in a while.

Speaker:

And, Miko Rantanen goes to the hurricanes.

Speaker:

we'll see what happens.

Speaker:

I mean, Miko Rantanen, has played a game.

Speaker:

he didn't have a point in his first game, but Martin niches in two games

Speaker:

has to assist so far with the abs.

Speaker:

So, things working out for him and we'll, we'll see, you

Speaker:

know, we'll revisit this trade.

Speaker:

I'm sure once we get a little closer to trade deadline and we kind of get some,

Speaker:

get some games under their belt, we'll, we'll take a look back at this trade too.

Speaker:

there was a signing about an hour ago.

Speaker:

We're recording this on Monday at about 5 30 PM.

Speaker:

And the Washington capitals have gone all in on Logan Thompson.

Speaker:

He gets a six year, 5.

Speaker:

85 million cap hit extension.

Speaker:

Logan Thompson will be the goaltender for the Washington

Speaker:

Capitals for the foreseeable future.

Speaker:

What do you think of that deal?

Speaker:

5.

Speaker:

85 for Logan Thompson?

Speaker:

I love it.

Speaker:

I love it for both sides, right?

Speaker:

So, from a Washington capitals perspective, right?

Speaker:

You're getting a guy who is, who's proven already this year that

Speaker:

he can be a top NHL goaltender.

Speaker:

and you don't have to pay a lot of money for him, if you want to go get

Speaker:

top tier talent, like Conor Hollibaugh, you know, UC Sorrows, it's going

Speaker:

to cost you eight, 9 million bucks, but you get a guy who has proven, he

Speaker:

apparently can't lose in regulations.

Speaker:

Right now, sitting with a nice record of 22, two and three.

Speaker:

outside of, anybody named Conor Hottlebuck, he's got

Speaker:

the best stats in the league.

Speaker:

And I think he leads the league in goal saved above expected.

Speaker:

all the right numbers coming in for a guy like this.

Speaker:

Aside from Hellebuck, yes.

Speaker:

Hellebuck at 26.

Speaker:

7 goals saved above percentage.

Speaker:

Logan Thompson is at 18, but Logan Thompson has played 12 fewer games.

Speaker:

okay.

Speaker:

So if you extrapolate those games out, he's about in the same.

Speaker:

Spot, maybe even a little better than Hellebuck.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And thompson, right?

Speaker:

You get because, let's face i was kind of, you know maybe, you know, before A

Speaker:

was going to be the guy f I had a lot of hope in hi And then Aiden Hill comes in

Speaker:

kind of, you know, he goes through that.

Speaker:

He had a little bit of an injury bug was kind of the starter

Speaker:

for half a season, got hurt.

Speaker:

Aiden Hill comes in, they win the cup, right.

Speaker:

And then he gets the extension.

Speaker:

And then Logan Thompson basically had to settle for a one year deal in

Speaker:

Vegas or two year deal, I'm sorry.

Speaker:

and then goes to, Washington for the same league minimum money, signs

Speaker:

a one year deal, which, was crazy to me because when I looked at his

Speaker:

numbers, they look pretty good.

Speaker:

especially for a guy who has proven he can play 30 plus games, I figured, he'd

Speaker:

probably get a couple million bucks, but no, Maybe he wanted a little more term

Speaker:

than teams were willing to give him.

Speaker:

And Washington took a chance.

Speaker:

He gambled on himself and it paid off.

Speaker:

So kudos to him.

Speaker:

And you know, they continue to roll with him.

Speaker:

So I think you probably have them.

Speaker:

Is he in your Vesna trophy top three right now?

Speaker:

he'd be close.

Speaker:

He'd be close just because he spent most of the season just going, you know,

Speaker:

alternating games with Charlie lingering.

Speaker:

So, It makes it a little bit more difficult.

Speaker:

I don't want to get into a Ben Bishop situation where, you know, you have

Speaker:

a guy who won, won the Vesna only playing like 30 games in a full season.

Speaker:

not quite there yet, but, for me, he's pretty damn close because

Speaker:

when you look at, the caliber of guys he's, you know, he's being

Speaker:

compared to again, Conor Holabuck.

Speaker:

I mean, you could even throw him in there with, you know, Vesna.

Speaker:

Vasilevsky and Darcy Kemper he's up there, right?

Speaker:

And so, I think you could easily put him top five.

Speaker:

I don't think there's any question about that.

Speaker:

top three, I'm not ready yet.

Speaker:

I want to see him play a few more games and see how the rest of the season goes.

Speaker:

he's making strides to be in that conversation for sure.

Speaker:

it never hurts when your team Is the top team in the NHL points percentage wise.

Speaker:

They are right now.

Speaker:

Top team in the NHL.

Speaker:

They're tied with Winnipeg, but Winnipeg has, to play two more

Speaker:

games they've been playing great.

Speaker:

who would have thought they're definitely the surprise team of this year.

Speaker:

Well, I guess the only other big signing was Borgen.

Speaker:

I know there's another signing and I had it up and then I

Speaker:

think I moved away from it.

Speaker:

Will Borgen.

Speaker:

Signs a five year deal.

Speaker:

there was also another trade.

Speaker:

Scott Perunovich went to the New York Islanders from St.

Speaker:

Louis for a fifth round pick.

Speaker:

I always thought Perunovich would be a little bit better of a defenseman

Speaker:

than he has turned out to be.

Speaker:

he's got.

Speaker:

17 is, you had 17 assists last year.

Speaker:

He's got six points this year.

Speaker:

Just, things haven't fully panned out for him.

Speaker:

I wonder if going to the Islanders where they play a much less sexy game, like

Speaker:

they play the most boring defensive style hockey, bodes well for him and

Speaker:

if he can play a little bit better,

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And it's odd timing because they just signed Tony DeAngelo to a one

Speaker:

year deal coming over from Russia, Tony DeAngelo is not a guy, I would

Speaker:

think, for the Islanders would be, you know, a, a defensive defenseman

Speaker:

kind of, you know, player I think that they're normally used to having.

Speaker:

But, I think this speaks volumes to.

Speaker:

the injury bug that's plaguing Noah Dobson and Mike Reilly right now,

Speaker:

two guys on their team that were bringing the offensive numbers.

Speaker:

So, I think both these guys coming over signal that maybe these guys are

Speaker:

going to be out longer than we thought

Speaker:

I think we all thought Tony DeAngelo would never play a game in the NHL ever again.

Speaker:

And here he is, man.

Speaker:

The guy is like a cockroach.

Speaker:

he won't go away.

Speaker:

He just keeps on, like he's in the KHL just goes, guys, I got to take off.

Speaker:

I'm somebody who needs me now.

Speaker:

See you later.

Speaker:

with the Will Borgen extension, I got to digging a little bit he was traded

Speaker:

on December 18th for Capo Caco and the deal has worked out really well for both

Speaker:

teams, if the Rangers, you know, Rangers are willing to give them an extension

Speaker:

and despite other things, not going.

Speaker:

The greatest for the Rangers right now.

Speaker:

you get a defenseman who's reliable cost controlled.

Speaker:

Now, he's going to play in your, that second pairing, most likely

Speaker:

for the next couple of years.

Speaker:

a good deal for the Rangers, but I was like, you know, I'm, I've watched

Speaker:

a couple of Seattle cracking games.

Speaker:

It looks like Capo Caco is finally getting that opportunity to be

Speaker:

the player that he wanted to be.

Speaker:

And, so far so good with the Seattle crack.

Speaker:

And I think he's, he's almost a point per game player through, the

Speaker:

games that he's played in Seattle.

Speaker:

Now, Seattle's no good.

Speaker:

they're like, I think seven, seven and one since he went there, which is better

Speaker:

than what they were before he got there.

Speaker:

it's not as if he's making this crazy difference in terms of the wins losses,

Speaker:

but he is putting up points and he's got that nice fit there with Maddie Binears

Speaker:

and Jaden Schwartz playing next to them.

Speaker:

And I think it was needed for Kako.

Speaker:

It was needed for Binears like Binears needed somebody who.

Speaker:

Could move the puck from that wing position even though we all thought

Speaker:

that Capo Caco would be more of a goal scorer, it's kind of turned out

Speaker:

to be a little more of a playmaker.

Speaker:

He still has a decent shot.

Speaker:

but he's getting those apples.

Speaker:

that trade has worked out really well for the Seattle Kraken.

Speaker:

you trade a guy like Borgen who is fine, but I don't think Borgen was

Speaker:

the difference between the Kraken being good or bad, I do think

Speaker:

that Capo Caco changed that first line for them and that's important.

Speaker:

They still have a lot of work to do, but He is a much better fit in Seattle.

Speaker:

Things are a little quieter out there and you're not gonna have that same

Speaker:

kind of pressure where it was like, we drafted you second overall, bro.

Speaker:

Why are you only putting up, 35 points?

Speaker:

Whereas Seattle, he gets that fresh start, there's much less pressure

Speaker:

on him and the organization can just treat him like anyone else and

Speaker:

give him the opportunity to play.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And I think outside of, Jared McCann and his goal scoring, which,

Speaker:

hopefully he continues to, find ways to score goals in the coming years.

Speaker:

But, when you look at the future of the Seattle Kraken team, I don't

Speaker:

really see any wingers coming down the pipeline where you get excited and say,

Speaker:

this guy could be a top line winger.

Speaker:

He could be a potential point per game guy.

Speaker:

they got a bunch of middle six guys, Tolvin Jaden Schwartz, Bjorkstrad,

Speaker:

all these guys that, again, I don't think, they go to any other

Speaker:

team and really move the needle.

Speaker:

But Kapokatko has that ability to come in and push the needle and still can develop

Speaker:

into a guy who could potentially, again, we could be talking about an all star,

Speaker:

you know, in the future for a while.

Speaker:

for the cracking.

Speaker:

Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker:

And, you know, it's, I feel like the crack and have kind of, they, they've

Speaker:

slid through the cracks a little bit this year they went out, they

Speaker:

signed someone like Brandon Montour.

Speaker:

Montour has really had a, I wonder if he regrets not finding

Speaker:

himself in Florida anymore.

Speaker:

two years ago when he had 73 points, I think that was probably a little lucky.

Speaker:

he had the best season of his life, but it was such a deviation from what,

Speaker:

like he had 35, 37, 33, 14, like.

Speaker:

It's not as if he was a huge points guy.

Speaker:

He was, he was a 30 point guy, maybe a little more, get 73.

Speaker:

And he just has not been able to get back there.

Speaker:

he'll probably end up with about 35 points again this year, but he's on the team

Speaker:

that is definitely not quite as strong defensively and doesn't have the same

Speaker:

players to pass the puck to upfront.

Speaker:

I think it's hurt him.

Speaker:

I'm sure that the money that he's making isn't hurting him at all,

Speaker:

but, I wonder if he goes, maybe I should have stuck around in

Speaker:

Florida for a little bit less money.

Speaker:

It would have been more fun.

Speaker:

no state tax down there, right?

Speaker:

Definitely tax in Washington.

Speaker:

definitely tax in Washington.

Speaker:

Definitely tags there,

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

You wonder, I mean, hindsight, right?

Speaker:

50 50.

Speaker:

We could say that every single season, there's always one guy's

Speaker:

like, maybe I should have stayed there for a little less money.

Speaker:

But, we'll probably get into this as we get closer to deadline time.

Speaker:

I'm sure Florida is going to be looking for another defenseman because, you

Speaker:

know, You lose basically your entire second pairing and, I'm sure they wish

Speaker:

that Brandon Montour would come back and play on that second pair with them.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

I wanted to get your thoughts on what's going on with the Red Wings

Speaker:

because they've been very interesting.

Speaker:

We did talk about them on the last show We talked about some of our,

Speaker:

10 burning questions, the turnaround they've had, since the coaching change.

Speaker:

they're six, three, and one in their last 10.

Speaker:

They've won their last two.

Speaker:

I got a text from someone asking about Patrick Kane.

Speaker:

Patrick Kane has really turned his game around since the coaching change.

Speaker:

I wanted to ask you if you think there's any chance that Patrick Kane gets dealt.

Speaker:

I'm going to go 60 40 and say yes.

Speaker:

only reason I say that is because, right now I think the Red Wings

Speaker:

biggest area of need is their five on five play and goal scoring.

Speaker:

Patrick Kane is not doing that.

Speaker:

his production,

Speaker:

Isn't there when it comes to five on five play, you've seen the

Speaker:

minutes, dip a little bit and, he's been more of a power play guy,

Speaker:

I mean, to be fair, he's done a lot of damage in the power play.

Speaker:

Yes, absolutely.

Speaker:

and teams would kill for that.

Speaker:

that's what I mean.

Speaker:

come playoff time, special teams become just a little bit more difficult,

Speaker:

And they can always be the difference between, winning a game and losing a

Speaker:

game, You just get that one extra goal in the power play going 25 versus 20%.

Speaker:

that's a big difference in teams will pay for, for that

Speaker:

leadership that experience he has.

Speaker:

and you know what, I, I mean, don't get me wrong.

Speaker:

I love seeing the Red Wings, They're thriving.

Speaker:

They're playing a lot better hockey.

Speaker:

They're playing a little bit grittier.

Speaker:

a little bit more responsible.

Speaker:

And again, that power play is phenomenal right now.

Speaker:

one of the hottest in the league, the problem is every other team

Speaker:

in front of them, the New York Rangers are 6 1 3 in their last 10.

Speaker:

Everybody, Ottawa, Columbus, everybody else is at that seven and three, six,

Speaker:

three and one situation where it's going to be very difficult for the

Speaker:

wings to jump, four or five different teams to get into the wild card.

Speaker:

as we get closer and closer to the deadline.

Speaker:

it might be a situation again.

Speaker:

I know he has a full, no move clause, but it might be one of those things where they

Speaker:

go to him and say, Hey, do you want to hang around or do you want to get traded?

Speaker:

do you want to go have a shot at another cup?

Speaker:

True.

Speaker:

it is first and foremost, his decision, right?

Speaker:

Like there's no getting around that.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And I think he likes being in Detroit.

Speaker:

He loves playing, with the brink ad but, ultimately I think at the

Speaker:

end of the day, Detroit's got to do what's best for the franchise.

Speaker:

I think they're probably going to go have that conversation with them.

Speaker:

So if he says, yes, I do think, you know, if Detroit's still

Speaker:

sitting outside of a playoff.

Speaker:

They'll let him leave.

Speaker:

They'll maybe let some of these younger guys from the minors come up

Speaker:

and put in a few more minutes like they've been doing with Marco Casper.

Speaker:

they've kind of elevated him to a top line role now and it's working very well.

Speaker:

so I think they'll probably explore more of that bringing up a guy like Nate

Speaker:

Danielson, giving him some middle six minutes and see how he thrives in the NHL.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

The other thing to consider is, Patrick Kane is going to get another

Speaker:

250 K at 60 games, which he's at 42 right now, he's going to get 500 K

Speaker:

if they make the playoffs, which is.

Speaker:

At this point I would put it at like 30%.

Speaker:

The wings make the playoffs.

Speaker:

there's still is certainly a chance, like there are only

Speaker:

four points out of the playoffs.

Speaker:

They could do it.

Speaker:

they would have to keep Kane.

Speaker:

I, you know, unless they go and they trade Kane and they get someone.

Speaker:

Back even better, which I don't, I don't know where that's going to come from.

Speaker:

he also gets another 250, 000.

Speaker:

If he gets 60 points and they make the playoffs, the 60 points is

Speaker:

probably, I mean, he's at 30 right now.

Speaker:

It's probably right on the cusp.

Speaker:

if he keeps playing the way he's playing right now, it's, it's certainly possible.

Speaker:

but you know, the downside of that, that does mean that that's an extra

Speaker:

million dollars on the cap next year.

Speaker:

Maybe you want to deal in before those things happen, if they happen,

Speaker:

That would be an extra million bucks.

Speaker:

I guess they have the cap space this year, so they would just throw it on there

Speaker:

And I don't think they're really worried about that.

Speaker:

but yeah.

Speaker:

and I'm not really sure, right?

Speaker:

if you trade him and he hits those marks, does the team that traded

Speaker:

for him get stuck with that bill?

Speaker:

Or does that go back to the Red Wings?

Speaker:

think the team that would acquire them would get stuck with it.

Speaker:

it would depend if the wings took like half the contract, maybe that

Speaker:

would be something in the negotiation.

Speaker:

That's a great question.

Speaker:

I'll have to do some digging on that.

Speaker:

the other side of it is, there's a lot of young players coming up This Red Wings

Speaker:

team, it's been a long rebuild and the end result, the players that you have

Speaker:

there's no Connor McDavid, there's no Austin Matthews, there's no Jack Eichel,

Speaker:

like, there's none of those players.

Speaker:

Now, Lucas Raymond, looks really good, but is Lucas Raymond going

Speaker:

to turn out to be Miko Rantanen?

Speaker:

Maybe.

Speaker:

I don't like a Gensel, maybe like somewhere, you know, that next tier

Speaker:

that we've been talking about, he was a great pick where they picked him at.

Speaker:

They just haven't gotten that generation.

Speaker:

I know only a few teams get a generational talent, but you'll look at the teams

Speaker:

that have won the Stanley cup and they all tend to have those types

Speaker:

of players that's my disappointment.

Speaker:

Right now with the Red Wings is like you've been bad for ever and yet you

Speaker:

have not been able to, you don't have nearly as much to show for it as some

Speaker:

other teams that were really bad.

Speaker:

Granted, the Buffalo Sabres were really freaking bad for a long time.

Speaker:

And what do they have to show for it?

Speaker:

The Ottawa Senators have been bad for a long time and they are just

Speaker:

now Sort of in a playoff spot.

Speaker:

maybe they'll make the playoffs, although things are looking good for them.

Speaker:

I just want the red wings to do something.

Speaker:

I'm looking at what Carolina did to bring in ranting?

Speaker:

And I'm going, when is Detroit going to start to go, we need to go out and

Speaker:

actually go after a big fish to show that we're back maybe it is slightly

Speaker:

to the detriment of the future, but let's get somebody in here who is, A new

Speaker:

best player or pretty darn close to it.

Speaker:

Like I'm, I'll be honest.

Speaker:

I'm a little sick of Dylan Larkin being the best player on this team.

Speaker:

I don't think that was ever the intention.

Speaker:

He shouldn't be the best player on a team.

Speaker:

It's no knock on Larkin, but I just don't think he should be the best

Speaker:

player on a team that's going to win.

Speaker:

I agree with you.

Speaker:

I know there's been talks about, scouts with the Sabres and Dylan

Speaker:

Cousins and all that malarkey.

Speaker:

But I don't think he is, better than Dylan Lark, And he's not going to be at

Speaker:

any point in his career, in my opinion.

Speaker:

I'm with you.

Speaker:

I think the Red Wings could use a splash.

Speaker:

If they want to say to the fans, Hey, We think we're in this.

Speaker:

with the new coach, Todd McClellan and the team we have right now,

Speaker:

Marco Casper is looking good.

Speaker:

Lucas Raymond looks phenomenal.

Speaker:

Let's go out and get a guy that I think can really.

Speaker:

Move the needle.

Speaker:

They don't have to necessarily find that generational talent.

Speaker:

But maybe they get a guy like, for example, Vegas went out and got Jack

Speaker:

Eichel, That was the piece they needed to push them over the top to win the cup.

Speaker:

Now, do I think going out and getting one piece is going to be enough?

Speaker:

No, they need other people from within the organization to help, get there.

Speaker:

But for me, go see what Vancouver is doing with Elias and say, We've

Speaker:

got Nate Danielson, JT Confer, a couple first rounders here.

Speaker:

Like what do you want?

Speaker:

let's make a deal.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

Bring in a guy like

Speaker:

Pedersen in Detroit, like Swede town here,

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

even though there's not, I mean, Moritz, no Moritz.

Speaker:

I must say, Lucas Raymond is Swedish, right?

Speaker:

But there's so many Swedish connections to this team.

Speaker:

get Zetterberg to call him, get Lidstrom to call him, get like

Speaker:

anybody you need to call this guy and say, you want to play in Detroit.

Speaker:

It is a great place.

Speaker:

from what I understand from what a lot of Swedes say the nice

Speaker:

parts of Metro Detroit, can be similar to the lifestyle in Sweden.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And like the same climate, you know,

Speaker:

Go live there, man.

Speaker:

They're phenomenal places.

Speaker:

super nice spots, can even come to the Jewish Cultural Center

Speaker:

and play some roller hockey.

Speaker:

We should get back there sometime.

Speaker:

I was thinking about that the other day,

Speaker:

I looked at my goalie pads in the garage yesterday and was

Speaker:

feeling a little down about that.

Speaker:

I haven't worn them in a bit.

Speaker:

played some pond hockey at a house about five minutes from my house.

Speaker:

it was just like four guys.

Speaker:

It was a lot of fun

Speaker:

Put the net down.

Speaker:

Let's go,

Speaker:

I was like, Oh man, I know somebody who plays goalie.

Speaker:

I know a guy he might be a standup goalie now.

Speaker:

I'm not sure,

Speaker:

Now knees are working just fine.

Speaker:

Well, that's our show.

Speaker:

let us know what you thought about the trade.

Speaker:

Find us at OT hockey talk on all the socials.

Speaker:

we did forget to mention the four nations, which we'll talk more in depth about,

Speaker:

next week since it'll be much closer to it, but Trent, Patrangelo's out

Speaker:

Should

Speaker:

four nations, Markstrom's out of the four nations.

Speaker:

I'm wondering if Matthews is going to play in the four nations.

Speaker:

I think they'll probably try to force them.

Speaker:

You're playing.

Speaker:

And you heard too, that they're not going to penalize the NHL.

Speaker:

Isn't going to penalize people for not going like they do with the all star game.

Speaker:

if somebody is hurt it's one thing if you're legitimately hurt, like

Speaker:

Patrangelo, I think he legitimately hurt.

Speaker:

He said he was hurt and he wanted to deal with an ailment, but went and played

Speaker:

that following night, So how hurt is he?

Speaker:

I don't know.

Speaker:

We'll see, but

Speaker:

I remember when dad soup missed the all star game and he was like,

Speaker:

I just don't want to play in it.

Speaker:

I'm hurt.

Speaker:

And I have that Jersey too.

Speaker:

It hurts to hurt.

Speaker:

I bought the Jersey thinking he was going to play and was excited for that.

Speaker:

It was the 100th anniversary for the Canadians.

Speaker:

So it was pretty nice

Speaker:

That's right.

Speaker:

they suspended him for a game.

Speaker:

He and Nick Lindstrom.

Speaker:

I don't care.

Speaker:

what was that?

Speaker:

0 9?

Speaker:

10?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

that.

Speaker:

they were so good then too.

Speaker:

They're like, we don't care.

Speaker:

We'll be fine.

Speaker:

yes, we'll talk more about four nations and what some of those, injuries means to

Speaker:

those teams and who might replace them.

Speaker:

I think they have till February 11th to replace those guys.

Speaker:

We'll talk more about that.

Speaker:

until then, we will talk to you soon and enjoy the hockey.
