podcast

:

Mike: Monarchs

3

:

Monarch Nation, the Monarchists

are back to recap, coastal Carolina

4

:

and Old Dominion and preview

that game against that school

5

:

on the other side of the state.

6

:

We are the monarchist.

7

:

I'm here.

8

:

I'm Mike.

9

:

I'm here with Gary and Aaron.

10

:

How y'all doing fellas?

11

:

Aaron: Woo.

12

:

I'm doing great, man.

13

:

I mean, obviously we are upset

last night, you know, following.

14

:

The end of the football game, but today

we've just had him, you know, a really

15

:

nice few hours with two championships.

16

:

Who would those championships be?

17

:

Gary?

18

:

Gary: I'm going to throw a pause

on thinking about the football game

19

:

yesterday and say, congratulations to

ODU Field Hockey winning the Big East

20

:

Championship will not be denied by the

NCAA Tournament Committee this year.

21

:

Liberty fans and their

bloodbath bullshit can suck it.

22

:

And then also, just a few moments ago,

ODU Women's Soccer wins their third

23

:

straight conference title, beating JMU.

24

:

Putting the paws on football, I'm

pretty freaking pumped for both of

25

:

those programs and everything they've

gone through this year to get some

26

:

conference titles and go dancing.

27

:

Even

28

:

Mike: better, that's two straight.

29

:

Over JMU.

30

:

Two straight conference

titles over James Madison.

31

:

Feels pretty sweet.

32

:

Gary: Something their football

team is not allowed to do.

33

:

Aaron: You know what's even sweeter

about both these is both teams went

34

:

down a goal early and they fought back.

35

:

Field hockey scored three.

36

:

Unanswered goals to win three to one

and then women's soccer scored two

37

:

goals, which is hard to do You know a

lot of times you don't when you have

38

:

teams that are this good You don't

have a lot of goals scored so to be

39

:

able to kind of you know, soak it in

regroup And then pull together what

40

:

the team's been working on all season.

41

:

But Angie and Andrew have

done with those teams.

42

:

I know that these wins are sweet.

43

:

You know, the field hockey won

over that up north in Lynchburg.

44

:

And then, um, there's no

love lost there at all.

45

:

And of course, JMU.

46

:

I mean, we don't hate that

school, but we love to beat them.

47

:

Gary: Two defensive minded teams getting

victory when it matters the most.

48

:

That is.

49

:

That is awesome.

50

:

I'm incredibly happy for

both of those programs today.

51

:

Mike: I feel like for Andrew,

this is going to be kind of a

52

:

get over the hump situation.

53

:

He's had that team playing very well

for the majority of his tenure here.

54

:

And they finally break through

to the NCAA tournament.

55

:

I think a lot more to follow

with this team in the coming

56

:

Aaron: years.

57

:

It is.

58

:

Yeah, I mean, they beat UConn,

who was a huge thorn in their side

59

:

for a long time, and the team they

beat today is ranked number six.

60

:

I mean, they had to win to get

in the tournament and they beat

61

:

a very, very good team to do so.

62

:

So, congratulations to Both teams, I

believe that the women's field hockey

63

:

team will learn tonight at 10 p.

64

:

m.

65

:

When and where they'll be playing in

the first round of the NCAA tournament.

66

:

And, and this is awesome.

67

:

Hopefully it's close and we

can get there to support them.

68

:

Mike: Absolutely.

69

:

Congratulations to both ODU

Women's Soccer and ODU Field

70

:

Hockey on their championships.

71

:

We're stoked to see it.

72

:

But we are here to talk

All Dominion football.

73

:

All Dominion loses 28 24 in a

heartbreaker, giving up a touchdown with

74

:

about 23 seconds to go to lose the game.

75

:

There's a lot to talk about in this game.

76

:

Where do you guys want to start?

77

:

Gary: I think we've just got

to talk about not being able to

78

:

finish games and hold on to a lead.

79

:

I mean, this is the third time

we've dealt with this season.

80

:

Fun, not so fun fact, ODU's three

biggest leads of the season have

81

:

all been in games we've lost.

82

:

With Marshall, Wake and now Coastal

Carolina, 17, 16 and 15 point leads that

83

:

we have not been able to hold on to.

84

:

Um, I don't think I'm stretching

to say that, like, this team does

85

:

not know how to play with a lead.

86

:

They don't know how to put games away.

87

:

And it's, it's really hurting us again

here in a game that we absolutely needed

88

:

to win at home for what we wanted to do

89

:

Aaron: moving forward.

90

:

Yeah, not only have we not learned

to do that, I know we've asked this

91

:

in post game pressers and talking

with Ricky, I know Mike has asked

92

:

it before, and talking about time of

possession, and how it's ultimately,

93

:

I know the responses that we've gotten

is ultimately it's not as important as

94

:

some people make it out to be, but 넣고

serviceichen, or maybe We consistently

95

:

end up on the short end of the stick

and oftentimes very significantly on

96

:

the short end of the stick for time and

possession and that wears on the defense.

97

:

I mean some of these leads that we

gave up were earlier in the season.

98

:

This one obviously last night and I

don't know the number exactly but I

99

:

think That we were on defense for what?

100

:

About 35 minutes of the game.

101

:

We had the ball for maybe 22 23.

102

:

I can't remember.

103

:

But between injuries and just teams being

defense being tired, that's got to be

104

:

a significant Aspect of some of these.

105

:

I don't know if collapse is the

right word, but not being able to

106

:

hold on if the offense can't have

sustained drives and the defense

107

:

is getting on the field more often.

108

:

It's just it's kind of the cracks

just end up opening up wide.

109

:

So,

110

:

Mike: in the 1st half coastal

had no issue moving the ball.

111

:

The difference was our defense

was able to step up in the red

112

:

zone and gets impactful stops.

113

:

I think that time possession did

take plates toll because the fourth

114

:

quarter, those red zone possessions,

they had no issue scoring on us.

115

:

And that's the difference between

being fresh and being tired.

116

:

And it definitely caught

up to him yesterday.

117

:

Yeah, it

118

:

Gary: was also the way that

Coastal was moving the ball too.

119

:

I mean, they were able to run on

us at will 278 yards on the ground.

120

:

It's 299 if you take out sack

yardage and a lot of that was

121

:

from the quarterback position.

122

:

We, we.

123

:

kind of showed that we're susceptible

to the quarterback running the ball,

124

:

similar in the way that cam Fancher at

Marshall was able to move around a lot

125

:

in the pocket, make some runs, make some

big plays, just not enough pressure.

126

:

And we never had a solve for

Ethan Vasco running the football.

127

:

He's a great athlete.

128

:

I mean, If you know the history of

Ethan Vasco in Old Dominion, there's

129

:

a reason why we recruited him here.

130

:

Lost him in the 11th to, to an offer

from Kansas to have a P5 opportunity.

131

:

Uh, you know, transfers to Coastal

Carolina to, to get some NIL money.

132

:

I think a lot of people were

surprised that he actually

133

:

started the game yesterday.

134

:

I think, I thought, you know, Jared

Guest had played well against Marshall.

135

:

They're clearly Coastal knew what they

were doing to put him out there because

136

:

we rarely had much of an answer to stop

him, especially in the running game.

137

:

Aaron: Yeah, I mean, he ran all

over us, 183 yards, averaged 8.

138

:

1 yards per carry.

139

:

I mean, it was clearly not good.

140

:

I mean, he, I guess he didn't

single handedly win that game

141

:

for them, but pretty damn close.

142

:

Not necessarily through the air either.

143

:

We have got to figure out how to

stop him, because if we want any

144

:

chance to make a bowl game...

145

:

We've got a couple more games we have

to win, and we've got other quarterbacks

146

:

that are on our future schedule that

can run the ball as well as Vasco.

147

:

Mike: Including this week, Gaten

Salter is a very talented runner.

148

:

I will note, Gary mentioned the

15 point lead that lasted all of

149

:

20 seconds, and that's because

Ethan Vasco broke one for 75 yards.

150

:

Yeah, yesterday sucked.

151

:

I don't know any nice way to say it.

152

:

Yeah, we've

153

:

Gary: been a team that I feel

like can absorb the first punch.

154

:

Even going to JMU, we lost that game, but

they would punch us in the mouth and we'd

155

:

be able to answer with a counter punch.

156

:

We did that with AP, we did it with

Louisiana, we've done it a lot.

157

:

We have not yet or yet to recover

from when we punch a team in

158

:

the mouth and they punch back.

159

:

We just kind of to melt a little bit.

160

:

So it's we can take a punch, but

we can't take the counter punch.

161

:

And that that's what I feel like

happened yesterday when Ethan

162

:

Vasco busted that one for 75 yards.

163

:

I just, that bad feeling creeped in and

that bad feeling was served correctly.

164

:

I mean, we still, we came down, we

got the field goal to go ahead, but I

165

:

don't think anyone was very comfortable

sitting on the sideline with a three

166

:

point lead and that much time left.

167

:

And Aaron, you

168

:

Mike: were talking about time possession.

169

:

So it was 34 to 26 and all of the

lopsidedness happened in the first half.

170

:

Which is those long drives that

kind of led to nothing other

171

:

than a couple field goals.

172

:

And that's when our defenses kind of,

they really bowed up in the first half

173

:

to come through and keep the game close.

174

:

The second half though, we played

even with them on time of possession.

175

:

And that's because third quarter we kind

of dominated and they dominated the fourth

176

:

Aaron: quarter.

177

:

Get it.

178

:

But that time of possession, I would

equate that to if you're a boxing

179

:

fan or an MMA fan of body blows.

180

:

I mean, there are continuous

body blows that add up.

181

:

At some point, you can't take anymore.

182

:

They just wear you down.

183

:

And at this point in the season, I

mean, you guys know better than me.

184

:

You have it up.

185

:

I do not at the moment.

186

:

But we haven't had a single

game where we won possession.

187

:

Time of possession.

188

:

And if we were to add all of them

up, I mean, and say how many minutes

189

:

on both sides, what the net is, it's

gotta be the length of a football game.

190

:

Mike: And with the way our offense

works, and the way our defense works

191

:

combined, I don't think we're ever

going to see us win time possession.

192

:

That bend on break

193

:

Aaron: style.

194

:

Yeah, I didn't say win time in possession,

but it's gotta be a little bit closer.

195

:

That, we've gotta have, instead

of a 15 point lead, we have

196

:

to have a 30 point lead.

197

:

I mean, technically

198

:

Mike: this is one of our best

time possession games all season.

199

:

With 26 minutes, well, it

says a lot for this season,

200

:

Gary: the last couple of games, we've

been trending better to more even time

201

:

of possession, but more importantly, like

balance in plays, cutting coast only had

202

:

10 more plays than we did, but there's

a big difference between dependent, like

203

:

defending more past plays versus more run

plays where you're running around a lot.

204

:

I mean, a lot of those run plays that

Vasco had or Beasley had for coastal.

205

:

I mean, we were.

206

:

They're basically like two plays with

the amount of time that we're running

207

:

and how much contact you had to make.

208

:

And you started seeing that wear down

of arm tackles that they were breaking.

209

:

And then more importantly, you

saw injuries start to pile up.

210

:

And that was my fear early in this season.

211

:

We're looking at time of possession,

like in the short term, you have two

212

:

or three games where you get dominated.

213

:

And that way you can get past it,

but we're in the home stretch.

214

:

Now dudes have been banged up for a while.

215

:

I mean, we saw.

216

:

You know, E.

217

:

J.

218

:

Green.

219

:

We know he's out for the year.

220

:

Sean Asbury was banged up

before the game, ended up in

221

:

the tent, didn't come back out.

222

:

I mean, we've Maury Morrison did not play.

223

:

We're missing some dudes on the

defense just from wear and tear.

224

:

If nothing else,

225

:

Aaron: we saw Keyshawn wicks go out

on crutches at the end of the game.

226

:

And when coastal really started

having success at getting to our

227

:

quarterback, we saw the offensive

line kind of getting nicked up.

228

:

I mean, Santana had to pick

himself up on the ground.

229

:

I mean, these guys were fighting, you

know, pulling themselves off the ground.

230

:

Clearly they were hobbled.

231

:

If we had more depth, we were able

to, you know, kind of get there.

232

:

But clearly they gave everything that

they had and they were fighting, fighting,

233

:

but those body blows just added up.

234

:

And, you know, it became much

easier for Coastal's, you know, D

235

:

line that To make an impact there

and really make it hard for Grant.

236

:

I will say

237

:

Mike: the sacks came late,

came on throws that we were

238

:

obviously going for deeper balls.

239

:

We kind of went away with what was

working on those shorter throws.

240

:

I'm not sure why we did because it was

working all game long and we started

241

:

taking more deep shots and the longer

you drop back, you're gonna give them

242

:

more opportunity to get that sack.

243

:

But both those late sacks

Our O Line got wrecked.

244

:

I think almost every guy on the

line got beat on those plays.

245

:

Yeah, they

246

:

Gary: were a couple in the fourth

quarter when Coastal really brought

247

:

a lot of pressure where there were

three, four, five guys getting on

248

:

Grant before he could even finish

his drop back, nevermind his reads.

249

:

And, you know, we had some

shakeup on the offensive line.

250

:

Um, I, I don't know why

Xavier Black missed the game.

251

:

Possibly he could have gotten

injured in warmups, but I don't

252

:

know the exact reason why.

253

:

Um, so Leroy Thomas moves over

to center and Elijah Hoskins.

254

:

Comes in a left guard for ODU.

255

:

And I think they did well with the

run concepts and run schemes to,

256

:

to get the ball down the field.

257

:

Um, but when Coastal knew it was a

passing down or thought it was a passing

258

:

down, they rolled up some pressure.

259

:

Offensive line scares me.

260

:

And I think why it scares me is that

we went out and we got a lot of guys

261

:

in the transfer portal this off season,

some big dudes that we thought had a

262

:

lot of potential that we were excited

about that really chased in the portal.

263

:

And then you have one offensive

line starter go down and the person

264

:

that comes in to replace them is

the walk on offensive lineman.

265

:

It's not the dozen guys that are on the

sideline that are big and highly touted

266

:

that we thought would be able to play.

267

:

It's the walk on and that just screams

to me that we have a major problem

268

:

with Talent evaluation and depth on the

offensive line if we're bringing those

269

:

guys in and we can't even get them in when

we absolutely need to Like I'm hoping Hutt

270

:

with a full normal offseason is able to

correct some of those issues But I mean

271

:

a lot of big names on that sideline were

watching that play while there was a walk

272

:

on in there at left guard Yeah, I feel

273

:

Aaron: confident that they'll get that

soft Gary the three of us were talking

274

:

about that yesterday at the game You

know, they'll be coach Decker's and coach

275

:

Hutts real First opportunity to kind of

have their guys that they're recruiting.

276

:

They're looking at, and even in

the portal, cause what, you know,

277

:

where they got here to make an

impact where guys see the offense

278

:

that we're running, see that the.

279

:

This offense, with the addition

of some key pieces, especially

280

:

on the offensive line, they can

make a huge impact from day one.

281

:

There's opportunities from

day one to really blow up.

282

:

And, I mean, if you're able to kind

of stock that cupboard a little bit.

283

:

Then this season could

look a whole lot different.

284

:

Unfortunately, those guys are just coming

in this year and they're kind of working

285

:

with the groceries that were on the shelf.

286

:

So I think that the

potential is certainly there.

287

:

Mike: Yeah.

288

:

I think what Gary was kind of going

towards is maybe there was some

289

:

guys that we gave scholarships to

out of desperation versus that's

290

:

who we really need in the building.

291

:

I don't know.

292

:

We're not at practices, so it's kind

of hard to know what the difference

293

:

is between one player and the next.

294

:

But that's got to be a concern.

295

:

I thought Obi Sani maybe

played his best game yesterday.

296

:

I was really impressed

by some of his runs.

297

:

Uh, Wicks was obviously great until...

298

:

He was down.

299

:

That's a tough loss to take with

how great he's been all season.

300

:

Would have been really nice to

have him in the fourth quarter.

301

:

But, the question I think most

ODU fans are asking is, where was

302

:

Gary: Callaway?

303

:

Yeah, I mean, we saw him on the sideline.

304

:

He was dressed out.

305

:

Omori Morrison was also

dressed out on the sideline.

306

:

You know, I don't know if it's an

injury and they wanted to bluff,

307

:

or I think if you watched JMU.

308

:

There may have been some misreads

and things like that of opportunities

309

:

where Callaway may have taken the

right block and gone for a lot longer.

310

:

I would hope that we're not holding

someone out just because they're

311

:

in the doghouse for a couple

misreads or something like that.

312

:

Um, but it would have been nice

to just have that one two punch,

313

:

especially when Wicks went out.

314

:

But yeah, credit to Obisany.

315

:

I thought he played really well, had

good vision, was very patient to let some

316

:

things develop and go down the field.

317

:

Another injury that hit us that I

think has been the most underrated

318

:

Person in our run unit is Jalen Butler.

319

:

He caught that kind of jump shot pass

from Grant Wilson, got us a first

320

:

down, grabbing his shoulder, went

right into the tent off the field.

321

:

He has been such a key piece

of our run game this year.

322

:

He has played so well and

done some amazing things.

323

:

Had that incredible two point

conversion catch a couple of games ago.

324

:

He went out, you could feel it.

325

:

You could feel that there was

a difference there with what we

326

:

were able to do from the run game.

327

:

But yeah, I mean.

328

:

Injuries pile up and we've got to

be able to adjust and do things,

329

:

but we can't leave weapons on

the sideline at key moments.

330

:

Aaron: You know, we had another

couple injuries, at least.

331

:

Appear to be that we

haven't talked about yet.

332

:

We had a different punter yesterday.

333

:

So Ethan Dwayne was dressed also,

but he appeared to have a small limp

334

:

and we did not see him kicking, even

though he was out on the field, uh,

335

:

he was kind of practicing timing.

336

:

So I'm thinking that he was nicked up.

337

:

He has been hit.

338

:

Really hard a couple times recently

during games and then we saw Ethan Sanchez

339

:

taking kickoffs And I think that's the

first time that we've seen him do it this

340

:

year or at least for an entire game I

341

:

Gary: think he he kicked maybe the first

game and then Rigby came in after that

342

:

but Sanchez came in He put a drove a

couple through the back of the end zone

343

:

I thought kick coverage other than I

think one where they advance the ball

344

:

past the 25 kick coverage is better Punk

coverage was better and man Shout out

345

:

to Brant coming in and punting under

heat, under pressure, and absolutely

346

:

booming some shots down the field.

347

:

Uh, so it's nice to, it's

good to have one punter.

348

:

It's even better to have two

that can come and sub in.

349

:

But you know, we lost the game yesterday,

which is a game we should not have lost.

350

:

Um, we absolutely should have won that

game, had so many chances to win it.

351

:

Uh, but I think the impacts of this

game extend beyond just losing it.

352

:

With the guys that we lost to injury, I'm

hopeful that they're able to come back.

353

:

We get some more bodies in for Liberty,

but, um, it's tough to lose some of the

354

:

guys that we lost, uh, yesterday and

continue on with basically need to win

355

:

two out of our final three to make a bowl.

356

:

Yeah.

357

:

Mike: Grant Wilson.

358

:

I thought he played

another pretty good game.

359

:

16 and 28, 172 yards, three touchdowns.

360

:

He ran the ball probably his best since

Virginia tech 13 carries for 66 yards.

361

:

He didn't take 24 on sacks, but

that is not 100 percent on him.

362

:

I thought he played great again.

363

:

So, a couple throws he

probably wants back.

364

:

And I know there's a couple receivers

that want a couple throws back.

365

:

Another shot at catches.

366

:

Namely, Dom Dutton on that long

touchdown pass he should have had.

367

:

Off of his shoulder

368

:

Gary: pads, we'll say, being on the near

the sideline like we were when Dutton

369

:

dropped that pass, you know, he was upset.

370

:

He threw his helmet.

371

:

He was mad.

372

:

But I really like to see Coach Ronnie

go right over to him and talk to him.

373

:

And then in addition to that, all of the

wide receivers that were on the bench

374

:

came right over to Dutton, pumping him up,

showing that they had his back, and then.

375

:

Later on in the game, Dutton's

able to catch a touchdown pass and

376

:

kind of get that redemption there.

377

:

So I was glad to see

those guys go pick him up.

378

:

I was glad to see coach

Ronnie go talk to him.

379

:

Um, I just, that was really big from

like seeing the culture and action a

380

:

little bit of picking guys up after that.

381

:

Cause he's been a weapon

for us all season.

382

:

I mean, Second drive of the game.

383

:

He goes streak and pass at the corners.

384

:

Only option is to go and

tackle him, get to PI.

385

:

Otherwise it would have been sick.

386

:

So, uh, glad to see him get

his, get his head back, right.

387

:

With some help from coaching

and teammates and go back out

388

:

there and catch a touchdown pass.

389

:

Not too long.

390

:

And I want to

391

:

Mike: give credit to Terry Jones for

picking up the helmet and going up

392

:

and trying to console Dom when he

was so upset about that miscatch.

393

:

And while we're on the topic

of guys who played well.

394

:

Jason Henderson does it again.

395

:

He actually breaks his own record.

396

:

22 tackles on the night.

397

:

What can we say about Jason

that we haven't said before?

398

:

He's everywhere.

399

:

He is our defense.

400

:

He's our leader.

401

:

He's just spectacular.

402

:

22 tackles.

403

:

One and a half sacks.

404

:

Three tackles for a lost.

405

:

And so many crucial plays in that

game where he made just the perfect

406

:

tackle and the perfect play.

407

:

Yeah, I

408

:

Gary: also want to shout

out Wayne Matthews.

409

:

I thought he had a fantastic

game as a linebacker position.

410

:

He ended up with 14 total tackles.

411

:

Terry Jones ended up with

13 and he forced the fumble.

412

:

But, Marcus Knight.

413

:

We got to talk about

Marcus Knight a little bit.

414

:

Doesn't play a whole lot.

415

:

He probably has the best, like, high

impact plays to snap rate in the entire

416

:

country because he had that return at JMU.

417

:

And then he gets a circus interception

on Coastal's first drive at the

418

:

game that I think really changed

the momentum early on for us.

419

:

You know, A lot of guys on the

defense were doing well, you know,

420

:

Sean Asbury goes out with an injury,

you know, Mario Thompson ended up

421

:

getting some time in at linebacker.

422

:

We had a lot of guys just kind of.

423

:

Kind of step up there.

424

:

Mario easterly moved into that

safety spot too for a little bit.

425

:

He's what 24 now yeah, there's definitely

some highlights from the defense, but

426

:

No one could just put the right hit

on vasco except for jason henderson

427

:

He had an amazing sack of vasco and I

thought vasco was going to get away.

428

:

Um, but man, we just I think it's

fundamentally, we have some issues

429

:

on defense with our approach to

stopping mobile quarterbacks.

430

:

Mike: There was a lot of arm

tackling going on early on in

431

:

place and a lot of over pursuing

where we're just taking bad angles.

432

:

I know it's important to go

fast, but sometimes being in

433

:

control is more important.

434

:

And I think that's something that

needs to be talked about inside

435

:

of our defensive locker room.

436

:

Gary: They were able to eat us up

a little bit when we were using the

437

:

three man front, which you've kind

of gone to primarily this year.

438

:

If you've got a three man front and you're

in man, you can do a lot of things to get

439

:

the quarterback, a lot of running room.

440

:

And it seemed like close.

441

:

So it was preying on that a little

bit where there just was nobody in

442

:

the second level that would stop,

you know, an eight to 10 yard rush.

443

:

It's tough on those front three, like

I think we have good defensive linemen,

444

:

but they're all getting double teamed.

445

:

You're basically rushing three against

five offensive linemen and either a

446

:

tight end or running back who's blocking.

447

:

And if you're not going to be a first,

second, third round draft pick in the NFL

448

:

as a defensive lineman, you're not going

to very frequently beat a double team.

449

:

I just continue to kind of wonder

at what point do we throw a

450

:

fourth defensive lineman up there.

451

:

It made a lot of sense

early when we had E.

452

:

J.

453

:

Green, Jason Henderson and Wayne Matthews.

454

:

Like that is a damn good three linebacker

set that you want to get on the field.

455

:

And E.

456

:

J.

457

:

Green was so good in that bandit

position with the way he played.

458

:

Like he's the perfect bandit for us.

459

:

I mean it stinks that he got hurt.

460

:

But I think you've got to change

some things up there because we

461

:

can't get pressure with three.

462

:

We are not able to stop the run with a

three man front and Liberty is looking

463

:

at that film and just licking their

chops because they love to run the ball.

464

:

They love to run with the quarterback

and I just worry about our ability to

465

:

continue to throw Jason Henderson up

there for 20 plus tackles and expect him

466

:

to stay whole throughout this season.

467

:

Well, I think

468

:

Aaron: something's got to change.

469

:

I mean, the three quarterbacks that

we have left on the, you know, on

470

:

the schedule all can run the ball.

471

:

They're all very capable.

472

:

We, you know, Mike mentioned Salter.

473

:

We know about Granger.

474

:

I'm looking up Bryn here

from Georgia Southern.

475

:

Looks like, you know, he could

be really dangerous at times.

476

:

So do we just keep doing

the same thing here?

477

:

Do we have to keep doing the same thing?

478

:

I don't know.

479

:

You know, at this point in the

season, you know, with those losses,

480

:

do our coaches have the flexibility

to try to do something else?

481

:

You guys would know better than

me, but I mean, it seems like we're

482

:

going to find ourselves in the

same position the next three games.

483

:

I

484

:

Mike: think it's a lack

of defensive tackle depth.

485

:

I'm not sure if we have the personnel

to run four men on the line like

486

:

we'd like to, because, I mean, we're

subbing in two defensive tackles,

487

:

essentially just swapping them

back and forth throughout the game.

488

:

If we had four defensive tackles that

could play, maybe we would see four men on

489

:

the line, but that's a recruiting issue.

490

:

Gary: Transfer portal issue two.

491

:

We lost a couple guys off the defensive

line late in the portal process.

492

:

One, I don't know if he's

seen any snaps at Colorado.

493

:

We have some other ones that I

don't think are playing either.

494

:

But I do think that there's a

pretty good chance we get a Maury

495

:

Morrison back for the Liberty game.

496

:

And that will be a huge

boost on the defensive line

497

:

to get a guy like that back.

498

:

I think he was pretty close to

being able to play on Saturday.

499

:

He was suited up.

500

:

But he did not see the field as

far as I know and I remember.

501

:

If we're able to get him back, that's

a big push because he is that guy

502

:

that can beat double teams or at

least eat some more blockers and

503

:

you can bring those late blitzes.

504

:

But I mean, it's just tough.

505

:

Um, and when we're able to kind of

give it the offense three to five

506

:

yards every single play, just based

on where we are schematically,

507

:

Mike: sorry, I'm looking at

Jason's year, year long stats.

508

:

He's had 141 tackles now.

509

:

Gary: Yeah, he could

definitely break that record.

510

:

I do want to shout out, use defensive

staff for a really heads up important

511

:

play at the end of the first half.

512

:

Coastal's driving.

513

:

We're up seven to three and coastal

calls a timeout out of the timeout.

514

:

They go and sub one, another wide

receiver in with 10 seconds on

515

:

the play clock, and I don't know

if it was Ironski or who, what.

516

:

Position coach on the sideline.

517

:

It was, but somebody shoved a player

out there and said, go sub in.

518

:

And because coastal sub so late, we

were able to sub, we were allowed to

519

:

sub cause to delay a game and coastal

was only able to get a field goal before

520

:

halftime, that was a super heads up play.

521

:

By our coaching staff, uh, to keep

us in the lead going into halftime.

522

:

I just want to shout that out of,

that's really smart to see that

523

:

receiver run on and go make that sub.

524

:

That was

525

:

Aaron: awesome.

526

:

We were talking about at the time.

527

:

I mean, you guys saw it really quickly.

528

:

And I mean, we were like

little school girls.

529

:

We were so giddy cause we knew

they weren't going to get it off.

530

:

Mike: Yeah.

531

:

That, that was huge for that.

532

:

Made it a lot easier on our

defense on that third down.

533

:

I'm just thinking about all game long

They really had no problem running on

534

:

us and it's really that defensive line

issue I'm, not sure what the answer

535

:

really is there other than you mentioned

the portal I mentioned recruiting I

536

:

kind of see it as the same thing you

have to recruit your players that

537

:

you have on your team And you got to

recruit talent in and it's a very tough

538

:

balancing act This thought for a second.

539

:

We have very special guests Angie

Hand of Old Dominion Women's

540

:

Soccer, she just coached Old

Dominion to their third straight

541

:

conference tournament championship.

542

:

Welcome to the show, Angie.

543

:

Track 1: Hello.

544

:

Hello.

545

:

Hello, Mr.

546

:

Angie.

547

:

Mike: Hey, Angie.

548

:

Thank you for joining us.

549

:

Congratulations.

550

:

Track 1: No problem.

551

:

You've got me for about 90 seconds.

552

:

Mike: All right, Gary.

553

:

Go.

554

:

Well,

555

:

Gary: Coach.

556

:

Go.

557

:

Yeah, Coach.

558

:

Coach, congrats on the win.

559

:

Tell us a little bit about what

that was like there in overtime and

560

:

getting that clutch goal at the end.

561

:

Track 1: Yeah.

562

:

Oh, it was immense.

563

:

I mean, we, they scored first and we, we

had to, we You play three games in five

564

:

days, which is quite frankly ridiculous

for the game of soccer at this level.

565

:

But we have to dig that out.

566

:

And when you go down a goal,

the last thing, it's really

567

:

the last thing you want.

568

:

'cause you want, you wanna go ahead.

569

:

But we go down a goal, we have to

move things around a little bit.

570

:

We have to dig deep in the

squad and edgy comes up with

571

:

big time goal to tie the game.

572

:

I thought we looked stronger

going into overtime.

573

:

I thought we were trying to

steal it the last five minutes.

574

:

Then we go into overtime and, you

know, I've said all year, the depth

575

:

of our squad is what can make us

special if we can get it right.

576

:

And we have one of our freshmen

who's playing in the left

577

:

back, outside back position.

578

:

Hits all the way down the line,

cuts inside and hits a world beater.

579

:

You just, things that dreams are made

580

:

Gary: of, you know?

581

:

Yeah, we were all watching it

here before we were getting ready

582

:

to record and we were losing our

minds when that goal went in.

583

:

So happy to see freshmen do that and

just the toughness of this team to

584

:

bounce back after going down 1 0.

585

:

Three straight conference titles in a

row, Conference USA, two in the Sun Belt.

586

:

Is it fair for us to say the dynasty

is here for ODU women's soccer?

587

:

Track 1: Well, don't start.

588

:

Just because we play in Hudson

Blue, don't think it's going to

589

:

quickly flip to Carolina Blue.

590

:

I'm not getting above

myself, that is for sure.

591

:

We're nowhere near them yet,

but we're just delighted.

592

:

I mean, everyone's banded this

word three peat a bit for a year.

593

:

For me and for our team, we've just

put it behind us, you know, and just

594

:

focus and getting better every day.

595

:

And, uh, I'm just immensely

proud of this group.

596

:

They're just phenomenal young women.

597

:

Gary: Yeah.

598

:

Well, Monarch nation is

definitely proud of you.

599

:

Yeah.

600

:

Yeah.

601

:

Enjoy the night.

602

:

We can't wait to buy more gear and

more rings for your team this year.

603

:

So, uh, congratulations.

604

:

And thanks so much for hopping

on for a few minutes for us.

605

:

Go enjoy it.

606

:

Oh, great.

607

:

Track 1: Thank you guys so

much for thinking of us and

608

:

thanks for your support.

609

:

Aaron: Go Monarchs!

610

:

Gary: Go Monarchs!

611

:

Go

612

:

Mike: Monarchs!

613

:

What a treat that was.

614

:

Angie Hine joins us live

after her championship.

615

:

That was fantastic.

616

:

That was so

617

:

Gary: awesome.

618

:

That was cool.

619

:

On the fly.

620

:

Aaron: So cool.

621

:

Mike: Let's go Monarchs.

622

:

But that's...

623

:

Yeah.

624

:

Alright.

625

:

So, where were we?

626

:

Gary: What I think we should talk

about the one of our last drives of

627

:

the game when we got the field goal to

go ahead 24 21 coastal comes down the

628

:

field, scores a touchdown, gets the

two point conversion to tie the game.

629

:

Our offense gets the ball and it seems

like we've got a good drive going.

630

:

We're moving the ball down the field

with some passes a great run from OB.

631

:

Sonny, we get.

632

:

Definitely into to field goal range,

a little over two minutes left.

633

:

And I know there's a lot of questions

on clock management there and

634

:

play calling and things like that.

635

:

Uh, although it's you guys, you know,

where, what do you think went down in that

636

:

final few minutes before we kicked that

Ethan Sanchez field goal to take the lead?

637

:

Aaron: Well.

638

:

This is probably the one thing that we've

either gotten DMs, talked to people after

639

:

the game, or we've seen on social medias.

640

:

The fans have been super critical

about that first to last drive,

641

:

the last real drive, in You know,

wanting us to run the ball, force

642

:

Coastal to burn their timeouts.

643

:

But we've talked about this together.

644

:

I mean, it's, this is a debatable topic.

645

:

Do you run the ball and you kind of

force them to burn those timeouts,

646

:

but they're still going to have,

I mean, assuming you just run the

647

:

ball, you know, up the middle,

they're going to get the ball back.

648

:

I know that Ricky and coach

deck are looking at getting

649

:

the first down and just.

650

:

Winning this game, whether it's scoring

a touchdown or leaving no time left on

651

:

the clock, you kind of, you got to get

a first down there either way, whether

652

:

you run for it, you throw for it.

653

:

We had the opportunity to do that.

654

:

We had a play that we didn't make,

unfortunately, and it didn't work out.

655

:

We have to put points on the board

there, and so you have a coaching

656

:

decision to make, and at a certain

point to go, What do we value more?

657

:

Do we value more of the opportunity

to run some extra time, or do we value

658

:

the opportunity to, you know, Put some

points up and the way that it ended up

659

:

falling is we got to third and long.

660

:

That's when we end up running the

ball because we wanted to make sure

661

:

that we didn't lose any more yardage.

662

:

We didn't take a sack that takes us

out of field goal range and then we

663

:

give the ball back to Coastal with

unfortunately enough time to win the game.

664

:

Mike: So that first down, first

and ten from the 26, we try

665

:

to throw a short pass page.

666

:

I think that would be considered a drop.

667

:

If he catches that, this is

not a discussion right now.

668

:

We're second and five, we probably run it.

669

:

And then we run it again if

we don't get the first down.

670

:

If we get the first down, we're

really in business, right?

671

:

But it all really comes down to

that first play where he drops it.

672

:

It changes the whole dynamics

of what this discussion really

673

:

Gary: is.

674

:

The only way that we were going to be

able to run the clock out or all the

675

:

way down is if we got a first down.

676

:

So.

677

:

I know there's a lot of question

about Why did we pass the ball in

678

:

the first two downs of that drive?

679

:

Those pop screens have been good for us.

680

:

They're basically have operated

as runs for most of the season.

681

:

If that ball is caught and we're looking

at probably seven, eight, nine yards,

682

:

then yeah, we're going to run it.

683

:

But Regardless, like Coastal had all

three timeouts, they could have run those.

684

:

They didn't end up needing those

timeouts on their next drive.

685

:

Like they called one almost to like,

okay, we're easy field goal range.

686

:

We're going to call a timeout and

drop a play to go get a touchdown.

687

:

They, that part didn't

really matter that much.

688

:

We needed to get a first down.

689

:

And I like the idea of our

coaching staff being aggressive and

690

:

trying to go get that first down.

691

:

We just, we didn't execute it.

692

:

Um, you know, second down the

line completely collapsed.

693

:

And Obi Sani made a humongous heads up

play to come back towards Grant Wilson

694

:

and be in the area for him to throw

the ball away because Grant had gotten

695

:

pushed so far back by the rush that if he

doesn't throw it away and if he takes the

696

:

sack there, we're out of field range and

now we're going for it on fourth down.

697

:

With the game tied, uh, so I, we have

to get the first down that's plain

698

:

and simple and not getting the first

down is why Coastal had the time.

699

:

It wasn't because we

called two pass plays.

700

:

Mike: Yeah.

701

:

I know in the past there's been games

where they've been criticized for being

702

:

too conservative and then now we take

chances and now you slam them for that.

703

:

If you're going to slam them for

being too conservative, you got to

704

:

give them a little bit of credit here

for taking a chance to end the game.

705

:

And

706

:

Gary: it was a smart pass play

to like, it wasn't trying to

707

:

throw the ball deep downfield.

708

:

It wasn't like a low percentage long bomb.

709

:

It was the pop screen that we

really didn't run until that drive.

710

:

It's what got us so many yards of JMU.

711

:

It was a low risk throw.

712

:

It just didn't get caught.

713

:

And I mean, shit happens on that,

but yeah, if we have that catch.

714

:

We're very setting up what a second in

two second in one, just based on where

715

:

they were, we run for the first down.

716

:

We kick it at the final second.

717

:

But either way, you have to have a first

down there to run the clock out and not

718

:

leave coastal more than like a minute.

719

:

Otherwise, even if they call

their timeouts, we run up the

720

:

middle, we kick the field goal.

721

:

They still have the same amount of

time to go down the field and score

722

:

the touchdown, which they end up doing.

723

:

And then we got the ball back and

actually had a chance of 26 seconds.

724

:

Mike: Alright, well, I'm

kind of over this game.

725

:

I'd like to talk about Toys for Tots

and then move on to the next week.

726

:

I want to first start off by thanking

the Marine Corps, Old Dominion, ODAF,

727

:

and all of our fans for taking part

in this and making it a special day

728

:

and a very successful collection.

729

:

We don't have the numbers yet, but just

based on how we filled one and a half

730

:

AAVs with toys, We filled two sheriff's

vehicles and a pickup truck with toys, and

731

:

I know those ammo cans were full of cash.

732

:

So I think we did a fantastic job.

733

:

I want to thank everyone involved.

734

:

On behalf of the Monarchists, it was,

it's really special to see the outpouring

735

:

of support for Toys for Tots each year.

736

:

And it's one of my favorite games

we have all season because of that.

737

:

Aaron: Yeah.

738

:

In addition to all the folks that you

just mentioned that really help make

739

:

this possible, we also want to extend

our thanks to Mark Davis and Scott

740

:

Jackson for letting us come on their

platforms and spread the word to folks

741

:

that might not ordinarily, you know,

be on social or see us, uh, being able

742

:

to be on the TV and be on sports radio,

the flagship appear in Hampton Roads as.

743

:

Big thank yous to both those guys.

744

:

Gary: Yeah, shout out to Footers

for catering our tailgate, uh,

745

:

feeding some Marines and a bunch of

Monarchs over there in the blue lot.

746

:

Uh, brought home a little bit that

will be my dinner this evening.

747

:

So thank you, Footers, for the food.

748

:

Uh, and everybody else who was

involved coordinating a pretty

749

:

massive effort there on Saturday.

750

:

And

751

:

Mike: the flyover, uh, it was fantastic.

752

:

It's always great to see

a flyover over Ballard.

753

:

But 2F18s, it was just not much

cooler than you can get than 2F18s.

754

:

That was

755

:

Aaron: awesome.

756

:

Yeah, shout out to vfa106 a base here

at nas ocean and virginia beach All

757

:

Mike: right, that kind of rips

the band aid off of yesterday.

758

:

We leave on a good note now It's

on to that team on from lynchburg.

759

:

What do you got gary?

760

:

Gary: Well, honestly, it's hard

to get a read on Liberty because

761

:

their schedule this season has

been softer than baby shit.

762

:

But you do have to give them credit

at some point because they've won

763

:

every single game and only a couple

of them have really been close,

764

:

you know, looking at the stats for

them, uh, they run the ball a lot.

765

:

68 percent of their plays are runs.

766

:

That's fourth most in college football.

767

:

And they're averaging 5.

768

:

8 yards a rush, which is the fifth

best, uh, in college football, they

769

:

lead the country with 283 yards

on average per game on the ground.

770

:

Uh, when they do pass,

they're pretty efficient.

771

:

Um, they're getting about

10 yards per pass, which is

772

:

fourth in, in college football.

773

:

Uh, they're really able to

kind of enforce their will.

774

:

I think a lot of the reason that

they run the ball so much as

775

:

they've been in a lot of games

where they have been up quite a bit.

776

:

You know, They're a fairly complete

team, you know, It's just tough to

777

:

kind of get a read on them because,

you know, they're not playing really

778

:

high level competition, so it's hard

to get a read on how good they are.

779

:

They really haven't faced much in

terms of adversity this year, but

780

:

we know that they have talent.

781

:

We know their quarterback,

Caden Salt, is really good.

782

:

He's super mobile.

783

:

In my opinion, he's definitely

better than Vasco and Vasco

784

:

absolutely gashed us on Saturday.

785

:

So, it's going to be a tough road

challenge, missing some key guys, but

786

:

it's a game that we have to win if we

want even a chance at bowl eligibility.

787

:

All right, Vegas

788

:

Mike: set the line at 13 and

a half in Liberty's favor.

789

:

The total is 57 and a half.

790

:

Aaron, what is your initial

thoughts on this team from

791

:

Aaron: Lynchburg?

792

:

I mean, that line seems fair based upon

what kind of where we are at right now and

793

:

kind of how we ended the game yesterday

and what those injuries look like.

794

:

I mean, we've got another

mobile quarterback.

795

:

If he has the success that Vasco had this

past week, it could be a long day for us.

796

:

I mean, it's another, it'd be another

day where Jason has 25 tackles.

797

:

And honestly, for us to be

successful, we can't have a

798

:

game where Jason has 25 tackles.

799

:

I mean, I love Jason, but if he's

making that many tackles, you know,

800

:

it probably means that things aren't

going exactly the way that we want.

801

:

Cadareus Calloway is, was hurt, but.

802

:

Clearly, we need someone else

to step up in the running game.

803

:

You know, we have to be able

to run the ball next week.

804

:

And, you know, Keyshawn was out

on crutches, so we don't know

805

:

if he's going to be available.

806

:

Now, Obi, look, he looked really

nice at the opportunities he had.

807

:

He showed more explosion and bursts than

we've had an opportunity to see before.

808

:

But he can't do it all on his own.

809

:

So whether Kadarius is the second

guy, or whoever it is, we have to

810

:

have at least one other guy step up.

811

:

So, it's going to be a

challenging game on the road.

812

:

We know their fans can be a bit

hyped, so, you know, it's going to

813

:

be a place that is going to make

some noise, and they're going to try

814

:

to create a home field advantage.

815

:

So, we can certainly win, but...

816

:

It's going to be a big challenge and think

817

:

Gary: defensively.

818

:

We have to get after Cade on Salter.

819

:

I mean, he's, they haven't

thrown the ball a ton.

820

:

He only has 192 passing attempts

on the year, but he has 23

821

:

touchdowns and three interceptions.

822

:

He's only taken eight sacks.

823

:

He's good.

824

:

And if you give him time,

he's going to tear you apart.

825

:

So we've got to bring pressure.

826

:

We have to get to him, hit him, make him

uncomfortable early and put them behind

827

:

the sticks with timing on each drive.

828

:

And it would be really nice to

make them one dimensional, force

829

:

them to throw the football.

830

:

And good God, if we get a lead, put the

foot on the throat and finish the damn

831

:

Mike: job.

832

:

So I'm looking at their stats.

833

:

Kind of concerned about obviously Salter,

but also they're running back Cooley.

834

:

Uh, he's got over six yards of carry.

835

:

Salter is over six yards of carry.

836

:

We're going to need to stop the run here.

837

:

Otherwise, it could be very

similar to the Coastal game.

838

:

As you said, Gary, gotta force

them to pass, which is not exactly

839

:

what you normally want to say

here, but we want to force them.

840

:

Yeah,

841

:

Aaron: you're right, Mike.

842

:

I mean, in addition to Cooley

and Salter, if you just go down

843

:

the list, Lucas is averaging 5.

844

:

4.

845

:

Bedgoods averaging 7.

846

:

5 joiners.

847

:

5.

848

:

7.

849

:

You go down the list.

850

:

I mean, the team as a

whole is averaging 5.

851

:

8 yards per carry.

852

:

They clearly have been able to run the

ball, but you got to pick your poison

853

:

here, and I agree with you guys, if you

got to pick one, I'm picking selling out

854

:

to stop the run and make salt or throw

the ball either way, it's going to be

855

:

a tough test if we managed to win this

game, it's going to be a, an impressive

856

:

victory based upon kind of how we limped.

857

:

You know, into the end of the game

yesterday, hopefully, I know we've got a

858

:

great training staff, and I'm sure that

they've been working overtime already

859

:

to get the team ready to field a good

strong team with the ability to compete

860

:

Mike: next week.

861

:

So, in the post game yesterday, Grant said

he will be fine, but we saw him kind of

862

:

bang his knee late in the game, and we

all know as old men, an injury, it's not

863

:

always the day that it hurts the most.

864

:

Once that swelling starts, it can

get a lot worse pretty quickly.

865

:

Fingers crossed that Grant is 100 percent

and there's nothing to worry about.

866

:

But I think that's something we need

to consider and have in the back

867

:

of our heads as we go through this

week and wait for this game to be

868

:

Gary: played.

869

:

We need to find some more answers on

the offensive line too, because the play

870

:

where Grant first came up kind of gimpy

was, I mean, just a jailbreak up front.

871

:

And I know we talked about it

last year with Hayden Wolfe when.

872

:

You're getting pressured as a quarterback.

873

:

You want it to come from the

outside, so you still kind of

874

:

maintain a pocket and can step up.

875

:

But when the pressure is coming from

your, the center and the guard positions,

876

:

there's nothing you can really do there.

877

:

You almost have to become a

running back and make someone miss

878

:

before you can even get back to

your reads or looking downfield.

879

:

You know, Grant's taken an

absolute beating this year.

880

:

at the quarterback position.

881

:

I think he is still played

well, all things considered

882

:

and how often he's been hit.

883

:

But just like we talk about the defense

being on the field too much and being

884

:

involved in too much contact, making

too many tackles that also applies

885

:

to your quarterback quite a bit too.

886

:

So we're going to need to get real

creative in our past blocking schemes.

887

:

Like we've gotten creative in our run

blocking schemes to give Grant some

888

:

more time to make some plays downfield.

889

:

Um, Liberty has a boatload of talent.

890

:

You can, I'm sorry, that team in

Lynchburg has a boatload of talent.

891

:

You can beat me out there on that one.

892

:

Because they can get guys into

school there that you can't get

893

:

into school at other places that

have certain things in place.

894

:

And they've got a lot of talent on both

sides of the football and it's gonna

895

:

take a Herculean effort for us to go in

to Lynchburg with that crowd and win.

896

:

Alright,

897

:

Mike: Aaron.

898

:

So, defensively we know, we're gonna

try to force them to throw the ball.

899

:

Make them one dimensional.

900

:

Offensively, I think this is

gonna end up being a shootout.

901

:

But where do you think is the

most important part for us?

902

:

Aaron: That's a tough question,

because I don't know what

903

:

we're gonna have, offensively.

904

:

We're not sure, like you said, Grant

and the post game presser told us he's

905

:

gonna be fine, but if he's not, you

know, my guess is Jack is gonna be the

906

:

guy, but If you've got an offensive

line who is clearly hobbled, at least

907

:

we were at the end of that game.

908

:

Do you go with Jack who won it?

909

:

I think we should

910

:

Gary: assume

911

:

Mike: the greatest plan

since he said he would be.

912

:

Aaron: Okay.

913

:

Well, I mean, I mean, you

asked me the question so.

914

:

Mike: No, we said defensively our whole

goal was to maybe make them offensively.

915

:

How are you attacking liver?

916

:

Aaron: Well, that's where

I was going with it, man.

917

:

I mean, obviously I don't know

who's gonna start it may have

918

:

grant start What do we do?

919

:

Do we have to assume that the offensive

line is healed because they clearly

920

:

weren't at the end of the game If

they're not are we looking at what

921

:

we saw at the end of the game?

922

:

Gary: or

923

:

Aaron: You know, I have no clue.

924

:

We're gonna have to be quick.

925

:

We're gonna have to go back to that

quick game that we abandoned kind

926

:

of in the middle of the game because

clearly we're not gonna have enough

927

:

time to take A lot of deep shots.

928

:

We'll have to pick our

opportunities when those come up.

929

:

I just, I'm very concerned about

the health of our offensive line.

930

:

And then even if Grant plays,

he might be a little nicked up.

931

:

I mean, we don't know

if that was the cramp.

932

:

We don't know if it was the knee.

933

:

Is he going to be less

mobile than he has been?

934

:

So it's going to be even harder to evade?

935

:

I don't know.

936

:

It's hard.

937

:

It's hard to say.

938

:

I mean, your guess is as good as mine.

939

:

I don't know,

940

:

Mike: man.

941

:

Looking at their defensive numbers,

they're a very stout defensive team.

942

:

I think the opportunities are going to

come through the air for our offense.

943

:

They're 92nd in the country in sacks,

very similar numbers to Coastal.

944

:

They're 74th in passing yards,

30th in rushing yards on

945

:

defense, 65th for yards per play.

946

:

They're really good on third

down, or they're 59th, but

947

:

they're pretty good on third down.

948

:

And they turn over offenses a lot.

949

:

They're second in the country in

defensive turnovers Is that a product

950

:

of who they're playing or is that a

product of how good their defense is?

951

:

I guess we're going to find out on

saturday But it looks like throwing

952

:

on them is the way to beat them.

953

:

Aaron: We find ourselves in a

precarious You know situation if we

954

:

depending upon our health, I mean and

I haven't seen them play so Have they

955

:

been susceptible to the deep ball?

956

:

Or is it more of the quick game?

957

:

If it's a deep ball, I know you said

that they have not had much success

958

:

getting pressure on the quarterback,

but neither had Coastal until late

959

:

Gary: yesterday.

960

:

Yeah, well they played on weekdays.

961

:

Pretty much the whole month of October.

962

:

And I got to catch a

couple of their games.

963

:

I think they struggled a little

bit from a tackling perspective.

964

:

Like, I don't think they gave

up a lot of really big plays.

965

:

They just didn't tackle

exceptionally well in the secondary.

966

:

And that maybe is where we can attack.

967

:

If we can get them to the

perimeter and get those pop

968

:

screens is this quick screens.

969

:

I will say.

970

:

We actually ran crossers off of

that on a fourth down on Saturday,

971

:

and I was really excited to see it.

972

:

The wrong receiver was targeted, um,

because the way the crossers were,

973

:

Kelby Williams was coming from the

home side to the visitor side, and

974

:

both defenders got picked and followed

the other one that we threw to.

975

:

But if we hit Kelby Williams

on that, that was six.

976

:

I think that's a way to attack it, but...

977

:

I mean, we just have to establish

some kind of identity on offense

978

:

because we look like two different

offenses going out there on Saturday.

979

:

It was all right.

980

:

We're gonna go and run all of this

possession or we're gonna throw

981

:

all of this possession and the

ones where we were successful.

982

:

It's where we mix and match and we

just took what the defense gave us.

983

:

We started losing that mentality

a little bit against coastal when

984

:

we got the lead and it killed us.

985

:

Like, I don't care if we're

down by 20 or up by 20.

986

:

If the defense is going to give you a

five yard out, take the five yard out.

987

:

If they, if they're going to crash

on the running back quarterback

988

:

keeper, go get five, six, seven yards.

989

:

We just got away from that

mentality when we got the lead and

990

:

we've done that all season long.

991

:

It just basic.

992

:

Liberty is going to give you something

because the way we stretch them out.

993

:

We have to just take what they

give us and go down the field,

994

:

eat, clock, and score touchdowns.

995

:

Fairly simple, but to going up against

a team I think is actually pretty good.

996

:

Yeah, we got

997

:

Mike: our hands full, on the road,

one o'clock game, in Lynchburg.

998

:

13 and a half.

999

:

I mean, that's a big number.

:

00:51:00,053 --> 00:51:00,343

Yeah,

:

00:51:00,463 --> 00:51:02,733

Gary: I think this is a

huge gut check for our team.

:

00:51:02,813 --> 00:51:05,513

Like, are they buying into

the culture that the coaching

:

00:51:05,513 --> 00:51:06,483

staff is putting forward?

:

00:51:06,683 --> 00:51:08,123

I feel like they have all year.

:

00:51:08,343 --> 00:51:11,133

Because we've had so many close games,

they've continued to bounce back.

:

00:51:12,073 --> 00:51:13,053

This is a big test.

:

00:51:13,053 --> 00:51:18,573

If we go into, into that city out

west, out south, and we get our

:

00:51:18,573 --> 00:51:22,833

doors blown off, I worry about

what the next two games look like.

:

00:51:23,103 --> 00:51:25,453

Like, because we go in

there and we can beat them.

:

00:51:26,093 --> 00:51:27,063

We have a chance.

:

00:51:27,468 --> 00:51:29,868

With Georgia Southern on the

road, Georgia State coming to

:

00:51:29,868 --> 00:51:31,538

Norfolk after a game at LSU.

:

00:51:32,528 --> 00:51:37,368

But can they rally, can they get

their shit together and go win a

:

00:51:37,368 --> 00:51:40,718

non conference row game to give

us a shot at bowl eligibility?

:

00:51:41,468 --> 00:51:43,158

How, how tough are you?

:

00:51:43,208 --> 00:51:43,788

Show us.

:

00:51:44,458 --> 00:51:46,638

Mike: So we don't know what

that locker room is like.

:

00:51:46,908 --> 00:51:51,298

We do know that Grant Wilson and Jason

Henderson said all the right things.

:

00:51:52,103 --> 00:51:56,323

In the postgame interview yesterday, that

one on mentality, it's really important

:

00:51:56,323 --> 00:52:01,333

to them, but how does that carry on to the

last guy on the, in the locker room, we've

:

00:52:01,333 --> 00:52:07,133

seen it in years past where the culture

wasn't right and how badly that can go.

:

00:52:08,418 --> 00:52:09,578

So, you're right.

:

00:52:09,668 --> 00:52:12,888

We're gonna see what this team

is really made of this weekend.

:

00:52:13,098 --> 00:52:18,358

Aaron: Yeah, I mean, we've got a few

games left to try to be bowl eligible.

:

00:52:18,468 --> 00:52:21,598

In my mind, I know, I'm gonna

ask you guys what y'all think.

:

00:52:22,018 --> 00:52:24,248

And I know if we ask the coaching

staff what they would tell us.

:

00:52:24,248 --> 00:52:26,178

But, you have, what do we have?

:

00:52:26,328 --> 00:52:27,588

Three games left.

:

00:52:28,208 --> 00:52:29,428

And we have to win two.

:

00:52:31,098 --> 00:52:36,968

Depending upon the health of the team,

do, I mean, do you make every effort

:

00:52:37,128 --> 00:52:40,738

and roll guys out who say they're

good but clearly are nicked up?

:

00:52:40,748 --> 00:52:40,768

Yeah.

:

00:52:41,303 --> 00:52:50,093

In this game or if there's questions

there and you do you decide to be more

:

00:52:50,093 --> 00:52:55,733

conservative, let guys get healthy and

roll the dice on the last two games

:

00:52:55,733 --> 00:53:00,543

Gary: of the season, you lost the luxury

to potentially rest banged up guys

:

00:53:00,543 --> 00:53:02,543

against liberty by losing to coastal.

:

00:53:03,388 --> 00:53:07,328

If you win that game, I think it's

actually smart to arrest some of

:

00:53:07,328 --> 00:53:10,598

your banged up guys and prep for

Georgia Southern and Georgia State.

:

00:53:11,318 --> 00:53:13,288

But we're, we're backs

against the wall now.

:

00:53:13,858 --> 00:53:18,868

I mean, if you think you're going to go

to Georgia Southern and win that game

:

00:53:18,868 --> 00:53:22,988

and then come home and beat Georgia

State to go six and six, that's it.

:

00:53:23,358 --> 00:53:24,038

Big gambling.

:

00:53:24,038 --> 00:53:26,808

It's a bad eyes though in that

one game parlay with 10 legs

:

00:53:27,028 --> 00:53:28,268

got about the same odds there.

:

00:53:28,698 --> 00:53:30,158

So you lost that ability to rest.

:

00:53:30,158 --> 00:53:33,448

I think when you lost the game in the

coast of Carolina, you have to throw

:

00:53:33,498 --> 00:53:38,368

everything you can at that game and

then hope you steal 1 of the next 2.

:

00:53:38,548 --> 00:53:38,848

I will say

:

00:53:39,128 --> 00:53:43,108

Mike: Ricky early on when he got here,

he put out a question to the team.

:

00:53:43,728 --> 00:53:45,598

Are you injured or are you hurt?

:

00:53:47,178 --> 00:53:48,438

There's obviously a big difference.

:

00:53:48,548 --> 00:53:50,678

Everyone is hurt at this

point in the season.

:

00:53:50,758 --> 00:53:51,598

They're beat up.

:

00:53:52,108 --> 00:53:53,698

It's a long grueling season.

:

00:53:54,433 --> 00:53:58,943

Football takes its toll on everybody,

but are you injured or are you hurt?

:

00:54:00,273 --> 00:54:03,753

Guys need to face reality

and see if they're hurt or

:

00:54:03,753 --> 00:54:04,653

if they're actually injured.

:

00:54:05,013 --> 00:54:07,443

Hey, we are welcomed

again by another guest.

:

00:54:07,908 --> 00:54:08,878

It's Andrew

:

00:54:08,938 --> 00:54:10,198

Aaron: Griffs from the Field Hockey.

:

00:54:10,418 --> 00:54:11,118

Hey, how are you?

:

00:54:11,163 --> 00:54:12,003

It's like on the bus.

:

00:54:12,723 --> 00:54:13,713

Track 2: Good, Andrew, how are you?

:

00:54:13,713 --> 00:54:15,843

I'm doing pretty fantastic.

:

00:54:17,093 --> 00:54:17,393

Mike: Yeah.

:

00:54:17,398 --> 00:54:19,403

Congratulations on your championship.

:

00:54:21,453 --> 00:54:25,003

How does it feel to finally get

over the hump and break through?

:

00:54:26,143 --> 00:54:26,463

Yeah,

:

00:54:26,903 --> 00:54:30,423

Track 2: it feels unbelievable

and our team, the team this year

:

00:54:30,793 --> 00:54:33,033

has been the right team to do it.

:

00:54:33,043 --> 00:54:34,103

It's been a great team.

:

00:54:34,403 --> 00:54:36,243

I knew it from the start of preseason.

:

00:54:36,673 --> 00:54:39,903

I think I told Aaron when we were

walking around the neighborhood,

:

00:54:39,903 --> 00:54:43,303

there's something special with this

team and sure enough, it worked out that

:

00:54:43,303 --> 00:54:43,393

Gary: way.

:

00:54:43,443 --> 00:54:45,703

Against a really, really tough opposition.

:

00:54:46,343 --> 00:54:50,093

Like, how awesome is it to bounce

back from that to win 12 straight,

:

00:54:50,133 --> 00:54:51,313

and now you're going dancing?

:

00:54:52,173 --> 00:54:52,783

Mike: Well, we,

:

00:54:52,783 --> 00:54:57,053

Track 2: uh, the teams we were playing

at that time, I think they were all

:

00:54:57,143 --> 00:55:02,563

either ranked then or are now in

the top six or seven in the country.

:

00:55:02,563 --> 00:55:06,663

And so we're playing some really

tough opponents early, and that

:

00:55:06,663 --> 00:55:10,763

was for a reason so that we could,

we could prepare ourselves for.

:

00:55:11,508 --> 00:55:16,008

Later on the season when things get tough

and so we played we were real close.

:

00:55:16,058 --> 00:55:18,438

I mean we were Very even with duke.

:

00:55:18,478 --> 00:55:19,098

I lost one.

:

00:55:19,098 --> 00:55:19,728

Nothing.

:

00:55:19,768 --> 00:55:23,738

We went overtime with michigan

Zero, it was zero zero.

:

00:55:23,738 --> 00:55:24,788

We lost one.

:

00:55:24,788 --> 00:55:30,068

Oh Uh, North Carolina, we had a

good chance to take that game.

:

00:55:30,068 --> 00:55:34,808

It was, it was a 2 1 game and

Liberty was 1 0 right till the end.

:

00:55:34,908 --> 00:55:36,988

And obviously they've had a great season

:

00:55:37,088 --> 00:55:37,768

Gary: going on.

:

00:55:38,658 --> 00:55:43,408

Going to the game today, you go down

1 0, you rally back and win the game.

:

00:55:43,688 --> 00:55:47,488

You know, what was kind of the mood on

the sideline after you went down 1 0 and

:

00:55:47,488 --> 00:55:51,058

what kind of propelled this team to go

and just hammer down the rest of the game?

:

00:55:51,478 --> 00:55:51,948

Yeah,

:

00:55:52,518 --> 00:55:57,088

Track 2: we, we just been consistent

and we've been down in several games

:

00:55:57,138 --> 00:56:01,938

through the season and we've reacted

really well and it's part of the

:

00:56:02,518 --> 00:56:07,198

strength of our team is the character

of our team is that everyone, they

:

00:56:07,198 --> 00:56:10,938

stick together and we've got no one

pulling in a different direction.

:

00:56:10,948 --> 00:56:17,578

We've got everyone staying together and

so it was, it wasn't really a big worry, a

:

00:56:17,578 --> 00:56:20,618

goal on a third rebound that they scored.

:

00:56:20,993 --> 00:56:25,913

And so it wasn't anything we did wrong,

it was just a couple of unlucky bounces.

:

00:56:27,063 --> 00:56:30,533

So we stuck together and I mean,

pretty immediate, and we'd been

:

00:56:30,533 --> 00:56:32,413

controlling the game up to that point.

:

00:56:32,413 --> 00:56:37,133

So we stuck together and pretty

consistent with our play, and

:

00:56:37,263 --> 00:56:38,773

we started to get outcomes.

:

00:56:38,803 --> 00:56:42,483

And we started to get opportunities

and corners, took advantage of them.

:

00:56:42,483 --> 00:56:48,873

And then I think the fact that we

were controlling how the game was

:

00:56:48,893 --> 00:56:56,003

played, not only gave us confidence,

but it also It gave them some concern

:

00:56:56,063 --> 00:56:58,003

and some doubt on their sidelines.

:

00:56:58,013 --> 00:57:03,073

So you could tell that the momentum

shifted and there was a feeling

:

00:57:03,073 --> 00:57:06,813

of, okay, this game's not going

to be a comfortable game for them.

:

00:57:06,883 --> 00:57:09,813

And we were feeling really

good about how we were playing.

:

00:57:09,813 --> 00:57:11,423

And we stuck to the game plan dead

:

00:57:11,423 --> 00:57:11,613

Gary: on.

:

00:57:11,633 --> 00:57:15,963

Well, we were happy to see them get

uncomfortable considering the opponent.

:

00:57:16,263 --> 00:57:18,813

But it definitely felt like

when you tied the game.

:

00:57:19,678 --> 00:57:22,608

That they got nervous, they were

playing a little bit tight, and

:

00:57:22,608 --> 00:57:24,248

you all just barreled down on it.

:

00:57:24,688 --> 00:57:24,968

You know.

:

00:57:25,713 --> 00:57:30,953

I gotta ask about Marlon's goal, which

was, I mean, a laser shot of a goal, just

:

00:57:31,793 --> 00:57:36,513

the fitting into what she may have been

snubbed for, but offensively, you know,

:

00:57:36,523 --> 00:57:40,163

how did that rhythm feel going in later

in the game to go get that second goal and

:

00:57:40,163 --> 00:57:41,613

then that third goal to really pull ahead?

:

00:57:41,643 --> 00:57:43,233

We were definitely happy to see it.

:

00:57:43,253 --> 00:57:45,813

Mike, Aaron, I don't know if you have

any other questions, but I'm just.

:

00:57:46,033 --> 00:57:49,133

Incredibly excited for your program,

what you've been through this year

:

00:57:49,133 --> 00:57:52,243

and to come back and to beat the

opponent you did to win the Big East.

:

00:57:52,473 --> 00:57:54,423

The tournament can't snub

you this year, coach.

:

00:57:55,053 --> 00:57:55,343

Awesome.

:

00:57:55,493 --> 00:57:56,233

Share with the team.

:

00:57:56,233 --> 00:57:57,453

We're incredibly proud of them.

:

00:57:57,503 --> 00:57:59,013

We are so happy for their win.

:

00:57:59,153 --> 00:58:03,073

Enjoy it, relish in it, and you'll

have a lot of monarchs behind

:

00:58:03,073 --> 00:58:05,753

you wherever you end up in the

tournament, whoever you're playing.

:

00:58:06,073 --> 00:58:06,943

Good luck to them.

:

00:58:06,953 --> 00:58:07,873

They're going to need it.

:

00:58:07,973 --> 00:58:08,813

Awesome job, coach.

:

00:58:08,813 --> 00:58:09,573

Thank you so much.

:

00:58:10,013 --> 00:58:10,813

Go Monarchs!

:

00:58:13,893 --> 00:58:15,423

That's awesome man,

both of them called in.

:

00:58:16,003 --> 00:58:16,213

That

:

00:58:16,213 --> 00:58:17,673

Mike: brings us to predictions.

:

00:58:18,283 --> 00:58:20,413

Aaron, as always, you get to lead off.

:

00:58:20,413 --> 00:58:20,993

Alright,

:

00:58:21,323 --> 00:58:24,563

Aaron: so this past week I broke

from tradition, I said we were

:

00:58:24,563 --> 00:58:28,313

going to win by a touchdown or more,

and ah boy did I screw the pooch.

:

00:58:28,973 --> 00:58:31,933

So, this week I go back to Old Faithful.

:

00:58:32,873 --> 00:58:37,613

It's going to be a really tough game, on

the road, a few hours from here, against

:

00:58:37,613 --> 00:58:39,543

the team that I won't say the name of.

:

00:58:40,903 --> 00:58:44,868

The defense is going to figure

it out, you know, it's Be able to

:

00:58:45,208 --> 00:58:47,238

bend, don't break, do just enough.

:

00:58:48,268 --> 00:58:53,028

The offense, we're not really sure

who's going to be there, but we're able

:

00:58:53,028 --> 00:58:57,988

to score points regardless with the

one guy who's been super consistent

:

00:58:57,998 --> 00:59:00,378

lately is really coming into his own.

:

00:59:00,898 --> 00:59:03,218

Ethan Sanchez wins the game.

:

00:59:03,698 --> 00:59:04,738

50 yard field goal.

:

00:59:05,143 --> 00:59:05,913

I love it, Aaron.

:

00:59:06,503 --> 00:59:08,293

Mike: All right, Gary, what do you got?

:

00:59:08,553 --> 00:59:08,923

Well,

:

00:59:10,323 --> 00:59:13,283

Gary: I mean, our backs are kind of

against the wall here, and this is the

:

00:59:13,283 --> 00:59:15,013

first time we've been in this situation.

:

00:59:16,583 --> 00:59:21,263

I am going to bank on Liberty's

schedule being incredibly soft,

:

00:59:21,523 --> 00:59:24,953

and us being the best team that

they have faced so far this season.

:

00:59:26,053 --> 00:59:30,233

I think That the culture of this team,

what Coach Ronnie has put into place,

:

00:59:30,243 --> 00:59:33,993

what Coach Decker, Coach Seiler has

put into place, I think it resonates.

:

00:59:34,263 --> 00:59:38,143

I think this team is really pissed off

that they've lost the last two games.

:

00:59:38,973 --> 00:59:45,353

I think we go in to South Central

Virginia, we go on that terrible

:

00:59:45,353 --> 00:59:49,473

field with their terrible fans,

and we sneak this one out.

:

00:59:49,958 --> 00:59:50,688

By four.

:

00:59:51,228 --> 00:59:53,028

I got us to win this weekend.

:

00:59:53,358 --> 00:59:54,888

I think we can pull it off.

:

00:59:55,078 --> 00:59:56,628

ODU plus 13 and a half.

:

00:59:56,628 --> 00:59:57,608

Take it all day.

:

00:59:57,848 --> 01:00:00,068

This is going to be a one

possession game that we win.

:

01:00:00,918 --> 01:00:05,978

Mike: That is surprising that

you went there, but I like it.

:

01:00:06,373 --> 01:00:11,603

I like it a lot, because I

see this game as being another

:

01:00:11,623 --> 01:00:13,843

Caderius Calloway blockbuster.

:

01:00:14,303 --> 01:00:16,703

We didn't see him this week,

so he's going to be fresh.

:

01:00:17,163 --> 01:00:18,483

He's going to be ready to roll.

:

01:00:18,783 --> 01:00:21,693

And I don't think they've seen a running

back like Caderius Calloway, I'll say.

:

01:00:21,693 --> 01:00:22,933

Not uncommon to say.

:

01:00:24,143 --> 01:00:26,153

Because there's not many

out in the country like him.

:

01:00:26,413 --> 01:00:28,733

So, he's going to be our MVP on Saturday.

:

01:00:29,323 --> 01:00:32,023

And we talked about gut check time.

:

01:00:32,103 --> 01:00:34,653

I mean, this really is gut

check time for this team.

:

01:00:35,668 --> 01:00:42,718

And seeing how angry and upset Jason

Henderson was after that game, I know he's

:

01:00:42,718 --> 01:00:44,988

not going to let his teammates give up.

:

01:00:45,118 --> 01:00:49,668

So my faith is in Jason Henderson

and Grant Wilson and this offense.

:

01:00:51,008 --> 01:00:51,848

Old Dominion wins.

:

01:00:52,778 --> 01:00:54,368

I'm not doing scores anymore.

:

01:00:54,588 --> 01:00:55,768

Just Old Dominion wins.

:

01:00:56,523 --> 01:00:57,163

Let's go.

:

01:00:57,493 --> 01:00:58,473

Gary: I can't quit you

:

01:01:02,103 --> 01:01:03,083

Aaron: I love it, man.

:

01:01:03,133 --> 01:01:05,803

I love it All

:

01:01:05,803 --> 01:01:09,273

Gary: right, take a page out of field

hockey's book and go kick their ass.

:

01:01:09,873 --> 01:01:10,573

Aaron: Yes, sir.

:

01:01:11,303 --> 01:01:15,253
