St Catherine of Siena, who we feast today, is a saint for our time. “The world is so terrible”, we say today, “all the rulers, the wars, the sickness - even the Church is rotten.” This was the world of St Catherine of Siena. Already this in itself is immensely consoling and sobering. The world of disaster did not arrive a month or three months or three years ago! It has always been so since the fall, and will always be till Christ comes. The point is to live the life of the Trinity within this world - that is the point of the Catholic Church, of being Christian! That I live today what was lost by forebears and still is lost by the world around us.
Let us pray:
“O God, who set Saint Catherine of Siena on fire with divine love
in her contemplation of the Lord’s Passion
and her service of your Church,
grant, through her intercession,
that your people,
participating in the mystery of Christ,
may ever exult in the revelation of his glory.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.”
