Speaker:

I know you want more success because

Speaker:

you're listening to this podcast, but

Speaker:

what are the best people do? What are the

Speaker:

elite do well in sport? There's three key

Speaker:

things. Today. I explained to you what

Speaker:

they are and how you can bring more of

Speaker:

those three things to your life today.

Speaker:

I'm Ian Hawkins and this is Sporty's

Speaker:

life. The purpose of sport, as I

Speaker:

see it, is to see your vision become a

Speaker:

reality, find your voice, create

Speaker:

strong connections and learn to trust

Speaker:

your body.

Speaker:

Whenever I've heard elite sports

Speaker:

people ask the question of what's the

Speaker:

most important thing? If you're giving

Speaker:

advice to someone about success, it's

Speaker:

always these three things that come

Speaker:

come up that are that they

Speaker:

say are important. Now, nearly all of

Speaker:

them say hard work. That's a given,

Speaker:

right? If you want to be good at

Speaker:

anything, you have to put in the work.

Speaker:

You have to do the hours. I think

Speaker:

everyone knows that. The two other things

Speaker:

I wanted to talk about today. One is you

Speaker:

have to enjoy yourself.

Speaker:

You have to do things that you love. You

Speaker:

get success when you're doing stuff that

Speaker:

you love. Now, I speak to so many

Speaker:

people at my age and actually

Speaker:

probably across the board and they,

Speaker:

I asked them particularly for their job.

Speaker:

Oh, you must really love what you do or

Speaker:

something along those lines. I say

Speaker:

something like that. Let me go. That's

Speaker:

OK, Kind of.

Speaker:

Yeah, it's pretty good. But we're not

Speaker:

even pretty good. Some of them might even

Speaker:

say, well, if I change

Speaker:

directions, then, you know, maybe that

Speaker:

would be too hard. Maybe I wouldn't be

Speaker:

able to earn the same amount of money.

Speaker:

All these different excuses. Why not?

Speaker:

Now I know what that's like because I can

Speaker:

remember. Few years after my dad

Speaker:

died, just questioning lots of things in

Speaker:

my life and I was just thinking, I worked

Speaker:

at Fox Sports. It was such a great place

Speaker:

to work until it wasn't because I wasn't

Speaker:

able to extend myself, not because it

Speaker:

wasn't a good place to work, but because

Speaker:

I wasn't enjoying what I was doing. And I

Speaker:

looked wanting something that gave me

Speaker:

more fulfilment that thatgave me more

Speaker:

enjoyment. And I can

Speaker:

remember the conversation I had with

Speaker:

myself, just I remember walking. So

Speaker:

vividly walking through the office and

Speaker:

just thinking, I keep telling people I

Speaker:

love my job, but, but do I really? And I

Speaker:

keep telling people I'm happy, but am I

Speaker:

really happy? Like, am I, am I fulfilled

Speaker:

enough? And the answer to both those

Speaker:

questions was no. I wanted more.

Speaker:

I wanted to enjoy what I did so much

Speaker:

more. I wanted to love it. I wanted to,

Speaker:

you know, these people they talked about

Speaker:

who get up, jump out of bed in the

Speaker:

morning because they love what they do.

Speaker:

And doesn't feel like a day of work.

Speaker:

Now, I'm happy to say that's where I am

Speaker:

now, but that took time and it took

Speaker:

courage and commitment for me to go well,

Speaker:

I'm going to change direction and it's

Speaker:

not about ripping the band aid and I'm

Speaker:

just going headlong into something that's

Speaker:

just going to cause you stress and

Speaker:

overwhelm. But it's working towards

Speaker:

something, taking the gradual steps

Speaker:

because I'm a big believer that when you

Speaker:

find what it is you love and pursue it,

Speaker:

you'll find a way to make it work. You'll

Speaker:

find a way to make it work financially.

Speaker:

You'll find a way to. As a career, you'll

Speaker:

find a way to make it work, whatever it

Speaker:

is. So if you're at that point in

Speaker:

your career and you're thinking maybe I,

Speaker:

maybe I could be doing something else,

Speaker:

but then you go, oh, but how am I going

Speaker:

to, how am I going to get around the

Speaker:

money side of things again? It takes

Speaker:

courage and it takes commitment. For me,

Speaker:

it was about 3-4 years of it was like

Speaker:

working two jobs. So I would get home

Speaker:

from work, I'd spend time with the

Speaker:

family, and then I would dive headlong

Speaker:

into creating something new.

Speaker:

And it did take time, but totally

Speaker:

worth it. And the other thing

Speaker:

that they say that's hard work,

Speaker:

loving what you do. And the third thing

Speaker:

is making sure you are being yourself.

Speaker:

Now I would ask all of you to have a

Speaker:

blunt and honest self assessment of of

Speaker:

how you show up in different

Speaker:

circumstances and how often you

Speaker:

be a lesser version of yourself or a

Speaker:

different version of yourself to suit

Speaker:

circumstances. How often are you not

Speaker:

being yourself? How often are you?

Speaker:

Making sacrifices, tolerating things

Speaker:

that you shouldn't for fear of upsetting

Speaker:

other people. People

Speaker:

pleasing? Just yeah. Try

Speaker:

trying to make everyone else happy and

Speaker:

comfortable. It doesn't

Speaker:

really do them a service and it certainly

Speaker:

doesn't do you a service. It doesn't

Speaker:

everyone a disservice. The more you can

Speaker:

be authentically yourself and the more

Speaker:

you're going to get out of everything you

Speaker:

do and you're going to be far more

Speaker:

successful. So you look back at like

Speaker:

doing what you love. If you don't love it

Speaker:

when it gets hard, you'll find an excuse.

Speaker:

You'll find something not a reason not to

Speaker:

do it. When you are having to make

Speaker:

sacrifices and you're not fully being

Speaker:

yourself, then you develop things like

Speaker:

resentment, frustration.

Speaker:

You might get a good result by trying to

Speaker:

be someone you're not, but then it always

Speaker:

comes with a payout. Pay off when you

Speaker:

then step away from whatever it was you

Speaker:

were doing and realise that that just

Speaker:

didn't feel right.

Speaker:

So like with anything where you want

Speaker:

to make changes, it's not about trying to

Speaker:

dive headlong into something, it's not

Speaker:

about trying to go zero

Speaker:

to 103 seconds, It's what incremental changes can I make?

Speaker:

probably

Speaker:

And don't choose all three. Just focus on one of these three areas to

Speaker:

improve your success. If you're already working hard, and as I've talked

Speaker:

to to you many times, you'reworking

Speaker:

o to

Speaker:

hard at different moments. Than the other

Speaker:

two areas, what can you do differently?

Speaker:

What can you bring more of what you love

Speaker:

into your day to day and where can you be

Speaker:

starting to step up and be more of who

Speaker:

you actually are?

Speaker:

Not what you think that the world wants

Speaker:

to see from you or what other people

Speaker:

expect of you, but who you are

Speaker:

takes courage, takes commitment, but it

Speaker:

will be the best thing you will do.

Speaker:

You've taken the time to listen to this

Speaker:

whole episode. Now it's time to take

Speaker:

action. Commit to one thing you've

Speaker:

learned today and make it happen. And to
