Alright folks, welcome to another episode and now that I'm engaged, how do I get married? Solo edition, kind of it's just August and I today. And if you and if you don't recognize August got new hair.
August Yocher (:Yeah, just us.
I did get new hair. Yeah, everyone's been saying that. I hope it gets a little bit lighter because it's a little too dark for me, but Thank you. And today's episode is a little different. We're doing something we haven't done before. and you know, I don't even know if there is an educational aspect to this episode. I feel like it's just more fun. So if you're in for a fun time, just keep tuning in. But
I have picked out a few Reddit stories, crazy wedding Reddit stories to read to Kevin. And I just wanna get his reaction and see if he maybe has any advice or just see his thoughts or if he's had similar experiences in the past. So we're gonna go ahead and do that.
Kevin Dennis (:I can't wait.
August Yocher (:Okay. And I'm sure I could find some some better ones later, but these are a few that I had. So I have three, so hopefully we can get through all of them today. So starting off, this one- they're all a little older too. This one was from three years ago. It comes from R slash wedding shaming. And this one is from
the perspective of a wedding vendor. They do not specify what type of wedding vendor they are, but I'll go ahead and read off to Kevin. Okay. I have a little time this morning, so this refers to the bridesmaid throwing up on the cake. We will call the drunk bridesmaid Reagan. This is for my exorcist fans. To start, she was a mess.
Kevin Dennis (:What?
August Yocher (:Very enthusiastic and seemed like the fun bridesmaid. Unfortunately, she was pregaming a bit too hard. The bartenders had already started to water down her drinks on the first one and eventually cut her off not long into the reception. She wasn't happy about this and threw a fit screaming, I'm so-and-so's maid of honor. You cannot and will not cut me off. The bride came over and asked if we would serve her later on if she drank water and sobered up a bit, and we said we didn't know.
Fast forward a bit and Reagan was way out of control. We hadn't served her anything in a while, but she seemed more drunk than she was previously. We started watching her and saw that the bride and bridesmaid were giving her alcohol. I explained what was going on to the venue attendant and security. She was falling everywhere, lying on the ground with her dress up and grinding on random people. She may have known them, but their faces said, Have we met?
Kevin Dennis (:No!
Ha ha ha.
August Yocher (:The bride came over and asked for her to be cut off. I explained to the bride that I saw her and her bridesmaid giving her drinks even after we cut her off. So as long as they stopped feeding them to her, then she won't have access to more. During dinner time, Reagan tried to eat, but I'm guessing it wasn't a lot because the father of the bride was walking behind her, telling her to eat more and sober up. Reagan then proceeded to stomp around like a child. I saw her fan herself and grab her head and snatch up a bottle of water and
And went to take it to her. As I approached her, she slightly turned away from me, took a step, and just started projectile vomiting. The area? Yes, the cake table. Groom cake, bride four-tiered wedding cake, plates, napkins, forks, everything. I was shocked and grabbed the back of her dress to try to pull her away, but it was too late. Vomit was everywhere.
I went and got the venue assistant and dad. There was no coordinator. And dad went and got the bride. The bride was furious, and so were dad, mom, and the other bridesmaids. I was going to cut the cake for them, but I draw the line at vomit cake. The bride asked me to go rinse off the plates and forks and get different napkins. She told me to take the cake to the kitchen and cut it there, serving only the back side. Yeah.
Kevin Dennis (:gross.
August Yocher (:The vomit was barely on the right side of the groom's cake and told me to cut the left side. I told her absolutely not. At this point I wasn't touching the cake and definitely not serving the guests the cake. It's a health risk and at this point and I will not be involved. She got mad, yelled at me, and her bridesmaids took over and cleaned the area and took the cakes to the back. Reagan was called an Uber and taken to the hotel. They served the cakes, cut the vomit side off, and served the cakes to all the guests.
Apparently the bride's cake was really expensive and each tier was a different flavor and not serving it wasn't an option. I couldn't believe it. None of the guests knew, but I did. I gagged every time I saw someone grab a piece from the table. They talked about how good it was and offered me some, and I know they saw the look of disgust on my face, never the wiser. This happened a few years back, and I still won't accept cake at weddings when offered.
Kevin Dennis (:Yeah. Well, I've had vomit, lots of vomit at weddings, and I've had a bad Yeah, and I had a bad I've had a couple bad cakes at events, but I've never had anyone throw up on a cake at a at an event and that it and the the fact that the people thought it was still a good idea to serve it is like gross because whatever wherever it lands doesn't mean there's
August Yocher (:I've definitely dealt with vomit, yes.
Yeah.
Kevin Dennis (:other parts that don't- get cut- you know what I'm saying? yeah.
August Yocher (:For sure. Especially if it was projectile. It's just
so disgusting. Like, and the fact that the guests I mean, you could have told the guests and like given them that option, but at that point cut your losses. And I also feel it was absolutely the bride's fault. Like
Kevin Dennis (:I was gonna say it it all goes back to the bride and the bridesmaid because they were the ones feeding her this poor girl that I mean not poor girl, she was being stupid, but this girl the drink. So I mean the person that wrote the article did the right thing by cutting her off. You know what I'm saying?
August Yocher (:Yeah. Well it sounded like
the other vendors were trying to do that as well, but because they were you know, other people were getting drinks for her, it just made it so much worse.
Kevin Dennis (:Yeah.
And I see the other drink thing all the time at weddings where like under you know, especially probably with underage kids, but you know, just like, I'll go I'll order two drinks and give one to my kid, you know, kind of thing, or that person got cut off. I'll get you a drink. Don't worry about you know, like you know, 'cause that that's a hard, hard thing to monitor when you have two hundred and fifty guests and only like two, three bartenders. You know, it it really is a difficult thing to monitor.
August Yocher (:Mm.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Kevin Dennis (:So and especially a lot of weddings that we do out here don't have security that could watch stuff as well. So Ugh Lots of lots Yeah.
August Yocher (:Yeah.
Yeah.
My only crazy, like, cake related stories is we there was one time the groomsmen and bridesmaids were doing the grand entrance introductions into the reception space, and one of the groomsmen was a little drunksy and he knocked into the cake as he was, you know, dancing his way into the reception space.
And thankfully it didn't fall over, but it wobbled a lot and there were a lot of like as from from the guests. And then, you know, a few times like because of the heat, the cake set out too early, or even not even that, but the top tier will start to slide down. But yeah, never never vomit. That's just
Kevin Dennis (:Yeah.
I've had melting cakes. I've had cakes that have fallen apart. I've had kids at weddings go put their fingers in the cake. Yeah. You know, 'cause it's right there. I don't blame If I was five years old, I'd probably shove my finger in a cake too. you know, but
August Yocher (:Yes, that's happened too yes.
Yeah. Wait, didn't
you do that? Or I feel like you talked about that once.
Kevin Dennis (:Yeah, maybe I am.
August Yocher (:Yeah.
Kevin Dennis (:but we and we also doing a wedding and we cut the cake and and the cake smelled foul. Like I'm talking wrong, like bad. Like I don't know what it was, and then it was like it was like crumbling apart. It wasn't even like you know, like I don't know if it we were trying we our guess what it was made a long time ago and was frozen and whatever when it came out of
August Yocher (:Like what? like bad eggs or something?
Kevin Dennis (:Thaw, it just it it was almost like sand, like dirt, you know, like it wasn't
August Yocher (:cakes like that where I've tried to cut it and it's huge when you start but then I'm like how did I only get 30 pieces out of this because the cake, the consistency it won't stay together to create a slice.
Kevin Dennis (:Yeah, and then
Yeah.
Yeah. And then the wedding planner like pivoted and had the bartenders make like chocolate martinis for everyone for dessert. So that was like that worked. But yeah, never, you know, I've had people throw up I've had p someone throw up a on a on a bride one time. Yeah, yeah, that was bad. 'Cause then she ended up having to do her first dance in like a different dress.
August Yocher (:it's cute. Yeah.
no.
Kevin Dennis (:Yeah, but yeah, that's horrible. Horrible story.
August Yocher (:How does that even happen? my gosh.
Yeah, well, we have another another horrible story. Are you ready? Okay. So this was two years ago. But technically 16 years ago, because that's when the the writer addresses it. So this has been a very long time, but still a crazy story. So
Kevin Dennis (:Well no All right, here we go. I'm ready.
August Yocher (:I am a musician and I sing occasionally in wedding bands. About fourteen years ago we were hired to perform at a very nice couple's wedding in Essex, in a barn on a farm in rural Essex. When we arrived, it was quite obvious the venue was a working dairy farm and quite pungent and fragrant. We set up in the posh wedding barn, not the working cowshed, and only minutes before we were due to perform the couple's first dance.
Kevin Dennis (:Mm-hmm.
August Yocher (:Did the awful owner, who had the worst breath outside of the smell of cow and feces, that there was a noise limiter and we couldn't be too loud because, and I quote, me and the wife will be watching X Factor. As this was 14 years ago, this was during the phase of loads of young millennials couples having chasing cars by Snow Patrol as their first dance.
Not only is this an agonizing song to watch people try and dance to when there's no rhythm in it until the chorus crescendo at the end, but it's really just a guitar playing two notes. We get about 12 bars into the intro in the first verse of the song when all of a sudden the power is cut. I want to emphasize that this is during the bride and groom's first dance. You know, the people paying for this entire wedding.
Everyone starts scrambling around. We're trying to figure out what the hell is going on. And then the smelly breath farmer storms into the barn and starts screaming at us for the band being too loud. It turns out there isn't a noise limiter. He can just cut the power to the barn from his house. I try and calmly talk to the farmer. I explain to him these people have paid a lot of money to hire this band and a DJ.
Both of which he has allowed to be part of his hiring agreement. He refuses to see reason. He screams his stinky breath in my face about how we are too loud, and the power will not be going back on until we turn it down. I cannot emphasize enough that we were not loud. We were playing two notes on a guitar. With that, the bride's younger brother comes storming over. The same younger brother who had just been released from prison for aggravated assault.
Kevin Dennis (:shit.
August Yocher (:And he marches straight up to the farmer, screams in his face, and then continues to headbutt him and kick him and punch him. The entire wedding descends into a huge fight with tables being flipped, bottles being smashed, glasses, plates, etc. The police are called. We pack up because it's obvious that there is no gig now. We did provide the couple with a statement for their insurance so they can hopefully claim back and sue this venue for breach of contract and providing somewhere completely unsuitable.
The bride's brother was carted off in the back of a van.
Kevin Dennis (:Well he went back to jail. Alright, we're so we unpack this by one, the farmer should not be having weddings at his venue if he's not gonna I mean you gotta even like to have weddings. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Two excuse me. Two, the farmer should probably be brushing his teeth on a regular basis if that was really the case. You know, and three
August Yocher (:Probably. Yeah.
Doesn't even like to have weddings there, clearly.
Kevin Dennis (:This is where it comes into the venue like rules and regulations come in. if you're gonna have a venue, you really need to have all those rules so then that therefore everyone on your property can understand what the rules are and not just be cutting power to the building. You know, the other thing too is the farmer the band and the DJ could have went after the farmer for any equipment that got messed up because that
We'll mess up equipment, just shutting it off that way. Yeah, it's not I mean it it can if for some reason while it shut off it set a surge through there or something happened. Yeah. So yeah, that that's that's something to unpack. It just
August Yocher (:Really?
Mm. Damn.
Well, the contract
itself too, like I wonder what was specified about this like noise dimmer thing. Like I don't
Kevin Dennis (:Well that or did the farmer just make it up on the spot, you know? Yeah.
August Yocher (:Well he sh for sure made it up because but
I'm saying like if that was listed anywhere in the contract But to like not even care about the couple's wedding, like the first dance song is yeah, just crazy crazy. I feel very bad for the bride and groom in that story.
Kevin Dennis (:No.
Yeah, I but I I I do and I don't because the couple probably didn't do their due diligence in making sure everything was accommodating and you know, they just you know, that was you think about it, sixteen years ago barn weddings were all a craze, you know. So they just probably wanted their wedding in a barn and didn't care.
August Yocher (:Yeah.
Didn't do the research. Yeah.
Kevin Dennis (:Mm-hmm.
So there's there's lots of you can find lots of finger pointing in that one.
August Yocher (:Well, I feel this story in the last one too, it also points back that it seems like there was no coordinator or some kind of person to to take care of those things. Yeah. And like
Kevin Dennis (:Professional. Yeah, 'cause they especially with
the last one, the band the band guy kind of was the one trying to be the voice of reason and trying to, you know, make it all happen for the couple. Like it seems like the band guy was doing the right thing.
August Yocher (:Yeah, and that's not even their job. Like that's crazy that he had to even step into that role too, but yeah. So yeah. I guess there is a lesson in a few of these hiring the right people and doing a lot of research, so
Kevin Dennis (:No.
Correct.
Yeah.
Well, and
communication, it's gonna come down to those things all the time. You know?
August Yocher (:Yeah.
Yeah. I really liked this one. This one was it's kind of more like a revenge story a little bit, like petty revenge. No, but it's like it's kind of a a good ending. I like it. Okay, so this was three years ago. So me, male thirty three, and my husband, also male thirty three, we met seven years ago and started dating after three years of knowing each other.
Kevin Dennis (:Alright. What do we got for the third? I can't wait.
August Yocher (:We got married last year. We decided to have dinner with each side of our family separately and tell them the big news about our engagement. Dinner with my family went smoothly. On the other hand, dinner with his family was a stressful event after we shared our news with them. At first, his parents and sister were thrilled and really happy for us, then wanted to know the details about what we were planning for the ceremony.
We shared that it still hasn't been discussed because we had just got engaged. Mother-in-law declared that she would be wearing white to the event and not even calling it a wedding. I asked if she was serious and why on earth would she come to a wedding in a white dress. She then replied that it is not a real wedding since we are both men and there's no bride to wear a white dress.
I was absolutely raging about that statement and lost my cool for a bit. I called her rude and disrespectful for saying it's not a real wedding because me and her son are getting married. I ended up saying that if she will come wearing white, she will not be welcomed at all. My husband tried to calm me down and we left. A day later I called her to apologize for my behavior and said that she is welcome to our wedding and asked her to not wear white because we are getting married even if we are both men.
She did not apologize for her part in the situation, but said, fine, she will not come to the wedding wearing a white dress. Fast forward two months, his sister called me saying that the mother had bought a white dress. I was angry and brought it up to my soon-to-be husband. He didn't want to make this a big deal. He will support any decision that I would make, but would very much appreciate for me to compromise and still let her come because she is very important to him.
I said that I need to think about it, and her behavior is very disappointing and disrespectful. I had talked to one of my close friends, female 32, and she suggested that all of the guests come in white, so the mother in law won't stand out. I decided to be even more spiteful and ask only the women to come in white dresses. And if it's their wedding dress, I would appreciate it even more.
We sent the invitation to the wedding, addressing the white dresses, and talked to relatives and people who might talk to the mother-in-law and asked them not to bring it up in front of her. And she got a different wedding invitation. Day of the wedding comes, she came in the white dress, and I welcomed her with open arms and said, I think I've seen other guests wearing white. She looked puzzled and entered the venue and started looking around. She was shocked and became even whiter than her dress.
Kevin Dennis (:NO!
August Yocher (:Almost every woman in our wedding wore white. She was mad and pouting the whole evening. I was happy, not only wedding the love of my life, but also not letting crazy people get their way.
Kevin Dennis (:Alright, so we need
to react. a lot to unpack there. So first off, it's you know when was this? Two years ago? Three years ago. So that I the first off, like same sex weddings have been around forever now. So the fact that she said it's not a real wedding is very shortminded of the mother. And especially if she knew who her son was, that I you think yeah, it's like you would wanna be excited for your son that they found their life partner.
August Yocher (:Mm-hmm.
Three years ago, yeah.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
Exactly.
Kevin Dennis (:There,
August Yocher (:They had been dating for three years already too and had known each other for seven years.
Kevin Dennis (:Yeah, so the mom knew all about this already. So the mom is a pain in the ass. We've we've established that. the friend with the white dress thing that was actually j- genius because then it just it diffused the problem and then but also I don't know why the mom thought that she had to be the one wearing the white dress. Like I that's the part I'm trying to wrap my head around is like why did she think she had to be the one wearing the the white dress at the wedding?
August Yocher (:Yeah.
genius.
Yeah, there just didn't need to be that in the equation at all. Like it doesn't make any well, and if you, you know, go on Reddit and you've listened to other Reddit stories, like I've heard a lot of stories very similar to this. but that's the first time I heard about everyone wearing a white dress. Like I think that's super genius. But there's this like weird thing sometimes with the mother in laws with the groom like feeling the need to wear a white well, and you have a story about that too, right?
Kevin Dennis (:No, no.
Yeah.
Yeah,
well I had a mom that wore all black and then with a black veil, you know, a hat like a hat with like a veil on it. Yeah, no. It was it looked like the mom looked like she was going to a funeral. And meanwhile, it's like the couple could not they seem like they they were so in love. You know, like you know what I'm saying? It it wasn't like they were, you know, being assholes or you know, I don't know. It just it's very interesting. So Yeah.
August Yocher (:It's just so dramatic for what?
weird.
Yeah.
It is it
is just interesting too, like when parents are not supportive in that way, when clearly they're a good person who loves them. Like I understand not supporting like a relationship like that's abusive and whatnot, but like when they're clearly happy and clearly normal, but you just have an issue, it's like it's not really about you anymore. Like it's about them and I just it's people are interesting. So
Kevin Dennis (:Yeah.
that and then I love that the friend came up with the idea and I love that everyone went along with it, you know, 'cause and I think by everyone going along with it it just showed that they supported these two guys very well. You know. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, they really do. And you know, family is not you know, is family is not your whose blood, it's it's who who's around you.
August Yocher (:Mm. Yeah. Yeah, they have some good people in their life. Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm. I also like their little ruse of, you know, secretly telling everybody else and sending a different invitation to the mother in law. So.
Kevin Dennis (:Yeah.
Yeah.
And made me laugh too, going through
that whole effort of doing that too.
August Yocher (:And I don't I don't know if I I don't know if he told his husband about it. Like I'm wondering I don't know if they mentioned that. Yeah. Cause I wonder if he was just I'm sure he told him, 'cause like he would also like, Hey, why is literally everybody here wearing white? So yeah. Cause I do agree, like what you said, it like diffuses the situation, like without making it a big deal, but also not letting that person get their way. So
Kevin Dennis (:Yeah, he did that that part of the story didn't come through. So
Yeah. I agree.
Get yeah,
well get their attention that they're it it basically they're starving for attention. And so yeah, it is what it is.
August Yocher (:Mm-hmm. But
I mean, but like what kind of attention are you gonna get? Like it's not good attention. You're just embarrassing yourself. So but yeah.
Kevin Dennis (:all right, well, we're gonna say this. Share any kind of crazy story you have about a wedding or any questions you have and send it to [email protected]. We'll be sure to address it here on now that I'm engaged, how do I get married? We'll be happy to do that. We also wanna remind our listeners to subscribe, hit that subscribe button, and then that's it. We did it, August. That's some crazy stories.
August Yocher (:Yeah. We need to do an episode
with our own crazy stories. Like we need to brainstorm, write them down.
Kevin Dennis (:Yeah.
There's so many things that have happened over the years that I would I sh I should
August Yocher (:unless like something prompts it and then I'm like, oh my gosh, like that yeah, that was crazy.
Kevin Dennis (:That's exactly where I am. I'm like, my god, this like the Yeah.
And like the cake story, that was the cake story f when you guys started talking about the cake. I'm like, that cake and it smelled so bad. It just I don't even know. Don't even want to know. It just it was it smelled worse than vomit. It was just foul it foul. And it yeah. And the smell just lingered, you know, it was so bad.
August Yocher (:What flavor was it? It it's yeah y
they might as well have vomited on the cake.
Mm-hmm.
Kevin Dennis (:All right. We'll see ya everybody next time on another episode of Now That I'm Engaged, How do I get married? Bye
